With 10 days to go until the 2012 NFL Draft, Kevin Hanson has updated his three-round mock draft.

Here are his picks for the Panthers:

1 (9). Fletcher Cox, DT, Mississippi State: Not only were the Panthers bad versus the run (130.8 rushing yards and 18 rushing touchdowns allowed last year), but they also ranked in the bottom quarter of the league in sacks (31). Cox has good size (6-4 and 298 pounds), strength (30 reps at 225) and athleticism (4.79 forty) and will immediately help improve the Panthers defensive line.

2 (40). Jayron Hosley, CB, Virginia Tech: Two of the biggest areas of need for the Panthers: (1) improve their interior defensive line and (2) adding another cornerback. With their first two picks (Fletcher Cox and Jayron Hosley here), the Panthers do just that. Hosley, who has elite speed, led the nation in interceptions, but he does not have great size (5-10, 178).

The Carolina Panthers and receiver Steve Smith have agreed to a three-year contract extension today that includes roughly $18 million in guaranteed money, according to NFL Network's Jason La Canfora.

Smith, the team's third-round pick in 2001, turns 33 next month and is now under contract through 2015 and the club has an option for 2016.

After a disappointing season in 2010 (46 receptions for 554 yards and two touchdowns), it seemed possible that Smith and the Panthers would part ways.

Instead Smith had 79 receptions for 1,394 yards, which ranked fifth in the NFL, and seven touchdowns in Cam Newton's rookie season. If you look at Smith's splits, however, he had a much better first half (46-918-4) than second half (33-476-3) of the season.

Smith holds the franchise record for receptions (699), receiving yards (10,278) and receiving touchdowns (59).
In our early preseason fantasy rankings, Smith is our 20th-ranked wide receiver.

Carolina Panthers Forum • Cam Newton sets QB rushing TD record (13)

Entering today's game against the Bucs, Panthers rookie quarterback Cam Newton was two rushing touchdowns shy of Steve Grogan's quarterback record of 12 rushing touchdowns.

Not any more.

Newton, the top overall pick in the 2011 NFL Draft, rushed for three more touchdowns today and now has 13 rushing touchdowns in 12 games this season. Six of those rushing touchdowns have come in his past three games.

On the season, Newton has 3,297 passing yards, 13 passing touchdowns and 14 interceptions in addition to 518 rushing yards and 13 rushing touchdowns.

The Panthers face the Falcons next week, but Newton is obviously a must-start every week unless you have Green Bay's Aaron Rodgers as well.
