After the season, Falcons defensive end Ray Edwards had knee surgery.

“Ray Edwards, I thought did a very good job for us [against] the run,” [coach Mike] Smith said (of Edwards at the Combine), per Orlando Ledbetter of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. “There was a stretch in the season that he had an issue with his knee. He had a procedure done with his knee.”

Edwards is expected to be "back at full health."

Kansas City Chiefs Forum • Chiefs to use franchise tag on Dwayne Bowe?

According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, the Kansas City Chiefs will use their franchise tag on receiver Dwayne Bowe provided the two sides do not agree to a long-term deal.

If Bowe is designated with the franchise tag, he would earn roughly $9.5 million in 2012. The deadline to designate a player with the franchise tag is March 5th.

Bowe, the team's first-round pick in 2007, has had back-to-back 1,000-yard seasons and the three of them in his five-year career. With the exception of 2009, when he played in only 11 games, Bowe has had at least 70 receptions and 995 yards every season.

Last year, Bowe finished with 81 receptions for 1,159 yards and five touchdowns.

In our early 2012 fantasy football rankings, Bowe is the 23rd-ranked wide receiver.

Atlanta Falcons Forum • Michael Turner to be on "pitch count" in 2012?

It had been widely speculated that the Falcons could part ways with running back Michael "The Burner" Turner this offseason even though he is signed through the 2013 season.

Turner, who turned 30 earlier this month, is due to make $5 million this season and $5.5 million next season.

Speaking at the NFL Scouting Combine this morning, Falcons coach Mike Smith indicated that Turner will be back in a Falcons uniform albeit with a smaller role in 2012.

"... I think the thing that we have to do, as Michael gets older, is that we have to start putting him on a pitch-count in terms of his number of carries," Smith said, via D. Orlando Ledbetter of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. "Michael has, over the last four years, has been a guy that’s had over three hundred carries. I think it’s very important and we have guys in place [to help out.] ... In terms of Michael, we want to keep him as our feature back but we definitely need to make sure that we get some of the other guys some carries as well."

In our preliminary 2012 fantasy football rankings, we ranked Turner as the No. 14 running back.

Since signing with the Falcons as a free agent four years ago, Turner has rushed for 1,300-plus yards on 300-plus carries in three seasons and had double-digit touchdowns in all four seasons.

Last season, Turner finished third in the NFL in rushing (1,340 yards), second in carries (301), scored 11 touchdowns and set career highs with 17 receptions for 168 yards.

NFL Draft Forum • RG3 measures in at 6-2 3/8 at Combine

For anyone worried about his height, Baylor QB Robert Griffin III measured in at 6-2 3/8, per Alex Marvez of Fox Sports.

Griffin is highly intelligent, athletic and accurate as a pocket passer. If it were any other year, he'd likely be the No. 1 overall pick.

I currently have RGIII at No. 4 to the Browns in my mock draft, but I'm strongly leaning toward putting him at the No. 2 spot (via trade, of course) in my next update.

Atlanta Hawks Forum • Joe Johnson (knee) out (at least) through All-Star game

The Atlanta Hawks will be without Joe Johnson, their leading scorer, for tonight's game and Thursday's game and he will sit out the All-Star Game this weekend.

The good news, however, is that the MRI on Johnson's knee shows that there is no structural damage and that Johnson has tendinitis. He will be reevaluated before their first game after the break, which is against the Warriors on February 29th.

“It is just tendinitis,” Hawks coach Larry Drew said, per Chris Vivlamore of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. “From that standpoint, it’s just going to be on feel, how he feels with treatment and therapy. … For us, it’s important that he gets well to where it settles down from a pain standpoint.”

“Particularly with tendinitis,” Drew said. “It’s just one of those things where you have to allow the knee to rest to where it is not getting the constant pounding.”

With Johnson out of the lineup tonight, Willie Green will start in his place. Green has played at least 20 minutes in three of his past five games Green has scored at 17 points or more in all three games.

Johnson is averaging 17.6 points, 3.8 assists and 3.5 rebounds per game and leads the team in three-pointers made (1.8 per game).

NFL Draft Forum • Don Banks has CB S. Gilmore ahead of J. Jenkins in his mock

In his latest mock draft at Sports Illustrated, Don Banks has LSU's Morris Claiborne and Alabama's Dre Kirkpatrick as the top two cornerbacks -- to Washington at No. 6 and to Jacksonville at No. 7, respectively.

It is widely expected that Claiborne and Kirkpatrick, in that order, will be the first two CBs drafted this April.

For the next two cornerbacks, Banks has South Carolina's Stephon Gilmore going to the Cowboys at No. 14 and then North Alabama's Janoris Jenkins going to the Bengals at No. 21.

Here's what he wrote about Gilmore: "This may look a bit high for Gilmore at the moment, but he's a slightly off-the-radar junior who some believe is going to fly up teams' draft boards once they see him work out at the Combine. He's got good size, plenty of speed, tackles well and plays strong press coverage. He also doesn't have the character issues that plague North Alabama cornerback Janoris Jenkins, the ex-Gator who's got a bevy of red flags attached to his resume."

Here's what he wrote about Jenkins: "As we've noted above, Jenkins has first-round talent, but his character issues will take him out of play for some teams. The Bengals don't usually shy away from players with off-field baggage, or they wouldn't have ever given Pacman Jones and Terrell Owens a shot to wear the tiger stripes. Cincinnati needs help at cornerback, and that might carry the day for the ex-Gator turned North Alabama standout."

Yesterday, Dylan Hernandez of the LA Times tweeted, "Mattingly on closer's role: 'I'm going into camp thinking Javy (Guerra) is the guy.'"

Guerra converted 21 of 23 save opportunities with a 2.38 ERA and 1.18 WHIP.

Meanwhile, Kenley Jansen, 6-5 and 257 pounds, converted five of six save opportunities with a 2.85 ERA, 1.04 WHIP and 96 strikeouts in 53.2 innings. That's a ridiculous 16.10 K/9, which leads all pitchers that threw at least 50 innings last year.

Seattle Mariners Forum • Ichiro Suzuki to bat 3rd this year

The Seattle Mariners will move right fielder Ichiro Suzuki to the No. 3 spot in their lineup this year.

Suzuki, who has batted leadoff in all but a few games of his career, hit a career-low .272 and less than .300 for the first time in his MLB career.

Despite the career lows in batting average and on-base percentage (.310), Suzuki stole 40 bases for the second straight season and third time in the past four years.

Boston Celtics Forum • Rajon Rondo suspended two games

The Celtics will be without point guard Rajon Rondo for their next two games. Rondo was ejected after throwing the ball at a referee in yesterday's game against the Pistons.

Rondo, who ranks second in the NBA in assists (9.6 per game), will miss tonight's game at Dallas and Wednesday's game at Oklahoma City.

Seattle Seahawks Forum • Seahawks, Lynch working on a long-term deal?

From today until March 5th, NFL teams can designate players with the franchise tag (we will track 'em all here).

NFL Network's Jason La Canfora takes a team-by-team look at who may be designated with the franchise tag and here's what he wrote about the Seahawks and RB Marshawn Lynch:

"Seahawks: The Seahawks are deep in talks with running back Marshawn Lynch on a long-term deal, which could well be completed before the March 5 deadline. If that somehow falls apart, the Seahawks are prepared to tag Lynch, according to a source with knowledge of the situation."

As Gregg Rosenthal of Pro Football Talk writes, "We think using the tag on Lynch makes a lot more sense than a long-term deal. He’s been an inconsistent player throughout his career that only played his best in the second half of last season. Why not make him back up the performance or go year-to-year with a player that already has plenty of wear and tear on his legs?"

I agree. Thoughts?
