With free agency set to begin at 4 p.m. ET, the Saints and wide receiver Marques Colston have agreed to a five-year extension.

The deal is worth roughly $40 million with $19 million guaranteed, per Fox Sports' Jay Glazer.

Colston, who was the team's seventh-round pick in 2006, has had five 1,000-yard seasons in his six years with the Saints. The exception to the rule was 2008 when he missed five games.

Since he entered the league, Colston ranks eighth in receiving yards (6,240) and is one of nine players with 6,000-plus yards during that six-year span.
Statistics: Posted by edsfootball — Tue Mar 13, 2012 1:50 pm

Saints quarterback Drew Brees extended his streak of 300-yard games to eight with a 466-yard performance in tonight's playoff win over the Lions.

Brees completed 33 of 43 pass attempts and threw three touchdowns and no interceptions.

It was the second-most in a playoff game and only the 16th 400-yard game in NFL postseason history. Only Cleveland's Bernie Kosar threw for more in a playoff game: 489 yards in an overtime win against the Jets on January 3rd, 1987.

During his eight-game streak of 300-yard games, Brees, who broke the single-season passing record a week early, has thrown for a total of 2,938 yards (367.25 per game), 28 touchdowns and three interceptions.

Next week, the Saints will travel to the west coast to take on the 49ers, who have the league's second-ranked scoring defense (14.3 points per game) and fourth-ranked overall defense (308.2 yards per game). Their pass defense ranked 16th in the NFL (230.9 yards allowed per game).

In my full playoff predictions, I have the Saints beating the 49ers next week and going on to win their second Super Bowl title in three seasons.
Statistics: Posted by edsfootball — Sun Jan 08, 2012 12:07 am

Saints quarterback Drew Brees needed 305 yards last night to break the single-season record set by Hall-of-Famer Dan Marino in 1984. He got 307.

It was the 12th time (in 15 games) that Brees threw for 300-plus yards this season.

Brees, who has thrown for 4,000-plus yards in all six seasons in New Orleans, now has two of the three 5,000-yard seasons in the NFL. He threw for 5,069 yards in 2008.

The players close to 5,000 going into Week 17: Tom Brady (4,897), Aaron Rodgers (4,643), Eli Manning (4,587) and Matthew Stafford (4,518).

With one more game to go and the possibility to earn a first-round bye, Brees and the Saints will be playing to win (as opposed to resting their starters). So, who knows? Maybe Brees will finish with 5,500 yards this season?

On the season, Brees has completed 70.7 percent of his passes for 5,087 yards, 41 touchdowns and 13 interceptions.

And it's likely that he'll be runner-up in the MVP voting behind Rodgers. What a year it has been!
Statistics: Posted by edsfootball — Tue Dec 27, 2011 7:02 am

Saints running back Mark Ingram is dealing with turf toe and has been officially ruled out for Sunday's game against the Titans, per Jim Wyatt of The Tennessean.

Considering the Saints have four capable backs, when all are healthy, it makes sense to sit out Ingram and activate Christoper Ivory, who led the team in rushing last year, for this week's game.

With Ingram out, I will bump up Darren Sproles and Pierre Thomas a bit when I update my running back rankings.

In his past two games, Ingram had a total of 29 carries for 134 yards and he scored a touchdown in both games. Ivory should see the short-yardage and goal-line work.

The Titans have allowed the 13th-most fantasy points to opposing running backs this season. Although they only allowed one rushing touchdown to running backs in their first five games, they have allowed five rushing touchdowns to running backs in their past seven games.
Statistics: Posted by edsfootball — Fri Dec 09, 2011 7:33 pm
