The three-year deal the Raiders gave cornerback Stanford Routt last February turned into a five-year, $54.5 million deal when they restructured the contract and added two more years in August.

Six months later, the Oakland Raiders have announced today via their Twitter account that they have released Routt.

Despite intercepting four passes last year, Routt was inconsistent and led the NFL in penalties (17), as noted by Jerry McDonald of the Oakland Tribune.

"From where we are, we've got some contracts that are kind of out of whack, but in discussions and viewing the cap situation, we should be fine," [GM Reggie] McKenzie said (via McDonald). "We don't have to make wholesale changes.''

Although NFL free agency begins on March 13th, when the new league year begins, it will begin early for Routt, who can sign with any team.

Per Jay Glazer of Fox Sports, the Oakland Raiders have hired Dennis Allen, who was the Broncos defensive coordinator, to be their next head coach.

The Raiders finished 8-8, lost the tie-breaker to the Broncos in the AFC West and fired coach Hue Jackson this offseason.

As Glazer points out, Allen will be the first Raiders head coach with a defensive background since John Madden.

Yesterday the Texans clinched the AFC South with a win over the Bengals as T.J. Yates, their third-string quarterback and fifth-round draft pick, threw for a career-high 300 yards.

The reason Yates was under center is because the team's starter, Matt Schaub, was lost for the season to Lisfranc (and Matt Leinart was lost to a broken collarbone).

Raiders running back Darren McFadden is dealing with Lisfranc, but coach Hue Jackson says that his season is not over.

"... It's not a season-ender," Jackson said, per Vittorio Tafur of the San Francisco Chronicle. "I mean, that's what we said - it's a sprained foot, Lisfranc, whatever you want to call it. Basically the same thing. I think Darren will be back before the season's over. And when we get him back, we'll get him back."

That said, I wouldn't expect him back in Weeks 15 or 16 when you would need him for your fantasy playoffs.
