I want to be a traveler. I want to speak four languages. I want to be a good programmer. I want to be an artist. I want to create, want to be a designer, a photographer and a movie maker. I want to read, want to be wise, want to have an opinion on important questions in life. I want to be a writer, an author, want to write a book. I want to be an actor, a stage performer, a good friend and someone who knows where he’s heading to in life. I want to be healthy, want to cook. I want to be an entrepreneur.

When I was a kid, I had dreams. Dreams of becoming something special in life. Without having an idea what exactly I wanted to be special at. I was told the good thing about successfully finishing school is that you can do whatever you want to do. And they were right.

Being at a point in life where you can do whatever you want to do is great. Still, I sometimes have the feeling I have to decide on what exactly to do, to decide on what to focus on. I am pretty sure the best way to be great at something, to excel at that, is to focus and concentrate. But I do not want to do that. I want the mix.

Actually, I already am most of the things I want to be, just not to the full amount. I am writing this, so I am a writer. I am in New Zealand at the moment, I’d count that as being a traveler. I love creating stuff, be it software, a collection of photos or a video. Still, I always need the mix. I love deeply diving into code I am writing, still I need to work on the design for that software as well so I feel good about my work. I like designing interfaces or just draw in my sketchbook, though not being particularly good at either.

This text might sound like it’s heading somewhere. Actually, it is not. That’s why I titled it “dreams” instead of “plans”. Life is full of beautiful possibilities, sometimes it just feels as if all of them seem equally appealing. For now I’ll just continue living my life of mixing everything together. Because let’s face it: Mixing everything together is the one thing I already am pretty good at.

On Saturday, João, Josh, Lisa and me did a great trip to Somes Island – or Matiu, as the Maori call it. This is an island in the middle of Wellington’s harbor that can be visited by ferry. As it is a nature reserve for animals you are searched for potential pests on arrival. A ranger gives you a short introduction to the island’s history – it has served as a quarantine station for human or animal infections in the past 150-ish years and was one of the places to have heavy anti aircraft guns during WWII. Also, there’s this amazing lighthouse that’s still in use.

Now being a scientific and nature reserve instead of hosting military and medical security facilities, Somes Island is quite the place for a quiet day trip. I enjoyed the peace without the city’s noise and was lucky to spot some interesting animals – although missing out on the penguins that only return at night.

But that’s just the Saturday – on Sunday we went on this awesome… oh wait, I’ll tell you about that next time.

See it as propaganda promotional material or something similar, it still is my personal experience, so I thought you might be interested in watching it. Also, I finally included some landscape shots of this beautiful country – that I still have to discover a lot more. And after some more or less random videos in the last few weeks this is the first one with me being sober in each clip.

On a different note, I am really excited at the moment because 4 hours from now I’ll be sitting in Wellington’s cinema, waiting for the midnight screening of “The Avengers” (12:01 am to be exact). If you don’t count the premiere US screening, I am pretty sure this is the first official chance to watch that movie worldwide in the entire universe. Finally, something good about the 10 hours time difference compared to Germany. Bitches!

I have the feeling the videos are getting more and more random each time. I hope you don’t mind. I at least don’t. Oh, as you will learn in the video I am too tall to audition as a hobbit. As I learned yesterday, I am also not tall enough to audition as an Elf. Luckily, Dom had the solution for me.

Oh, and respects to anyone who, after watching, understands the cricket scoring system. Although we didn’t manage to watch that cricket game, I must admit I’d really like to make up for that on the next occasion. Thanks David for giving your best in explaining the basics. In your great British accent.

My original plan for this upcoming weekend was to go to the New Zealand juggling festival. I was really looking forward to that but as it turns out the festival site is an 8+ hours ride away from Wellington. All night bus seats were sold old so it didn’t really make sense to go there for such a short amount of time. Instead I am planning to do something cool around Wellington. João and I are trying to think of something – we’ll see. Oh yes, I finally made it to the local Juggling meeting in town, though. Great and nice people, I will definately spend some time there each weak!

And there are more good news: I have finally found a flat in the town’s center. Two weeks from now I will move in there together with João and Rachel, the people you got to know in last week’s video.

But now for todays photos: Impressions of the streets and people in Wellington. I really like it here! The multicultural and individual touch you can see everywhere. Wooden houses that can resist the vibrations of the occasional earthquake better than buildings made of stone – and besides that, they look a lot more interesting than what I am used to in Germany. The last few weeks have been a busy time. My to-do list was enourmously long so I didn’t even have the time to sit back and realize what an incredible time is coming. It still is hard to believe, even now as my bags are getting loaded into the plane at this very moment. The journey in front of me will be so exciting. And it starts right now.

Ich werde dort bei einem sympathischen kleinen Software-Startup der vierte Mann im Team sein und hauptsächlich JavaScript/jQuery für das Webfrontend schreiben – im Hintergrund läuft alles mit Python, also habe ich damit hoffentlich auch etwas mehr zu tun.

Wie kommt man an so eine Stelle? Ich nehme mir mal die Arroganz heraus zu behaupten, dass es als junger Informatiker nicht schwierig ist, überall auf der Welt Arbeit zu finden. Man schaut sich etwas um, schreibt ein paar Firmen an und wird dann schon irgendwo genommen. Und dann? Selbst wenn man es alleine schafft, Wohnung, Papierkram und das Einleben vor Ort zu meistern, sitzt man wahrscheinlich in einem Team mit Kollegen, die nicht wie man selbst gerade von der Uni gekommen sind sondern schon ein paar Jahre älter sind und vielleicht schon in einem anderen Lebensabschnitt sind, eventuell Kinder haben. Aber irgendwo muss man ja Anschluss finden, damit man auch was erleben kann und Leute kennenlernt.

Daher mache ich das Praktikum über AIESEC. AIESEC ist eine Studentenorganisation, tatsächlich die weltweit größte mit 50.000 Aktiven (allesamt selbst Studenten) in über 100 Ländern – also quasi überall. Vor einem Dreivierteljahr bin ich selbst AIESEC beigetreten, weil meine Auslandsplanung da schon etwas konkreter wurde. Seitdem habe ich mich im Lokalkomitee Hamburg beteiligt, wo 60 andere Studenten aus allen Studienbereichen und ich dafür sorgen, dass Kontakt zu Firmen aufgenommen wird, Praktikumsstellen in Hamburg gefunden werden, passende Praktikanten aus dem Ausland gefunden werden und ihnen Ankunft und Leben im Hamburg möglichst reibungslos ermöglicht werden. Obwohl ich selbst die ganze Zeit in Deutschland war, habe ich schon so viel Internationalität mit Praktikanten aus Brasilien, Mexiko, Tschechien und mehr erlebt, dass ich noch mehr Bock bekommen habe, selbst ins Ausland zu gehen. Ich sehe, was für einen guten Anschluss unsere Gäste in Hamburg bereits nach wenigen Tagen haben und wünsche mir das gleiche auch für meinen Auslandsaufenthalt. Deshalb AIESEC.

Momentan bin ich fleißig am organisieren, habe mein Zimmer in Hamburg für die Zeit schon vermietet, mir eine Kreditkarte besorgt, Versicherungen abgeschlossen, stehe wegen meines Visums in eifrigem Kontakt mit der Botschaft in Berlin und habe einen Flug reserviert, den ich am Montag final bestätigen werde, so dass es dann am 6. März auf geht ins große Abenteuer. Dabei war Neuseeland nicht mal meine einzige Option. Über die Online-Plattform von AIESEC habe ich Angebote aus den Niederlanden, Spanien, Ungarn, Griechenland, China, Indien und Jordanien bekommen. Am interessantesten hätte ich dabei noch Jordanien gefunden. Ich war schon kurz davor, das Angebot anzunehmen, zögerte aber noch etwas weil die Firma vor Ort eigentlich eine Schweizer Firma war. Da ich Neues sehen und erfahren wollte, wäre ich ungern von deutschsprachigen Kollegen umgeben gewesen. In der Nacht, die ich noch über die Entscheidung schlafen wollte, kam dann das Angebot aus Neuseeland. Auch von der Stellenbeschreibung her war der Job ein ziemliches Traumangebot, so dass ich quasi sofort zugesagt habe. Den Auswahlprozess und ein Skypegespräch mit dem Team (mit 12 Stunden Zeitverschiebung gar nicht so leicht) habe ich dann auch überstanden, so dass letzte Woche die Zusage der Firma kam. Kaum 4 Wochen später hoffe ich dann, vor Ort anfangen zu können.

Ich verbringe das nächste halbe Jahr also am anderen Ende der Welt, werde von der Schönheit des Landes, die wir ja aus den Herr der Ringe filmen kennen, hoffentlich viele Fotos machen und versuchen, viel von meinen Erlebnissen hier in den Blog zu pusten. Da ich diese Zeit auch als Gelegenheit für mich sehe, mein Englisch zu verbessern, werde ich in nächster Zeit auf das Schreiben in Englisch umsteigen.
