I have two dogs and three cats. All rescues. All with opinions.

Max is our 6-year-old shepherd/hound mix... we call him the Duck Tape Dog. Two FHOs, one TPLO, one Achilles repair. He has been through more surgeries than most people I know and he still wakes up every morning like he owns the place. Sweet to his people, loyal to a fault, stubborn as the day is long.

Daisy is our 4-year-old husky mix and the gentlest soul in the house. She loves everyone she meets and is terrified of pretty much everything else. Loud noises, unfamiliar objects, the occasional leaf blowing the wrong way.

Then there are the cats. Tommy is 12 and has been here the longest. He is the quiet patriarch... sweet, attentive, keeps an eye on the other two. Lucy is 10 pounds of demands. She is loud, she is relentless, and she plays fetch better than either of my dogs. Tommy & Lucy are bonded…. you won’t find one with out the other, they are constantly snuggling. Penny is 7 and operates entirely on her own terms. She keeps to herself, gives high-fives for treats, and will accept your affection only when she decides it's time.

If your dog has had joint surgery or just has aging joints, Dasuquin is worth every penny. Max has been on it through multiple recoveries and I genuinely believe it's helped him stay as comfortable and mobile as he is at 6. He takes them like treats, which is a miracle in itself for a dog as stubborn as he is.

When I wrote the original version of this post back in 2023, I had just unboxed my Mac Studio and was still in that honeymoon phase where everything feels fast and nothing has broken yet.

Three years later I can tell you something more valuable than a first impression. I can tell you what it's actually like to edit thousands of sessions on this machine... the good, the things I'd tweak, and what I'd tell you if you're sitting where I was in 2023 trying to figure out which Mac to buy.

The short version: I haven't looked back once.

Not a single moment of buyer's remorse. For a professional photographer who culls, edits, and delivers constantly, this setup has been everything I needed it to be and then some.

But let's get into the details.

THE MACHINE ITSELF

I went with the Mac Studio M1 Max, 32-core CPU, 64GB RAM, 2TB SSD. At the time I agonized over every configuration decision. Three years in, every single one of those decisions still holds up.

Lightroom and Photoshop are lightning fast. I keep more tabs and programs open than any reasonable person should, and this machine doesn't flinch. Not once have I hit a bottleneck that made me wish I'd spent more.

If I had more desk space I'd add a second full-size monitor... that's genuinely my only "wish I had done this differently." Not a complaint about the machine. Just a desk space problem.

The RAM decision matters more than anything else. Whatever configuration you choose, buy the extra RAM. I went with 64GB and it's been a game changer for heavy editing workflows. This is not the place to save money.

THE MONITOR

I went with a REFURBISHED Studio Display and I'd make the same call again today. The 5K resolution, the built-in camera, the calibration settings for photographers... it just works seamlessly with the Mac Studio in a way that third-party monitors don't quite match.

I still buy refurbished Apple products without hesitation. Never had a problem with a single one.

One thing I didn't mention in the original post that's worth knowing: the Studio Display has a dedicated calibration setting specifically for photographers. It adjusts the white point and color rendering for photo editing and print work. If you have a Studio Display and haven't found this setting yet, go find it now.

THE ACCESSORIES

(1) iPad Pro (Second Screen)
Still working exactly as intended. Clean desk, seamless switching between iPad mode and second screen mode. Apple makes this so easy it almost feels like cheating.

(2) Grovemade Desk Shelf
I splurged on this one. I couldn’t help it. After watching so many Mac Studio videos I kept seeing this beautiful desk shelf. I researched it and found out it was made by Grovemade. Their products are gorgeous and have very clean, minimal lines. I still love it as much as the day I got it.

(3) The Mouse
Still love this mouse. The current version is the MX Master 3S... same experience, refined. The side scroll wheel mapped to brush size in Photoshop alone is worth the switch from Apple's Magic Mouse.

(4) iPad Stand
I picked up a cool CharJenPro Magnetic iPad stand. It’s magnetic so taking the iPad on and off is super easy and it swivels easily between landscape and portrait orientation. I don’t think this is available any longer, but if you can find something similar, it’s worth it!

(5) Desk Tray
I needed something to hold my pens and other desk paraphernalia, so I wanted a desk tray. I loved the one from Grovemade, but not the cost. I found this EDC Desk Organizer Valet Tray which is similar and does the job just fine. I still use this one, although they don’t offer it on Amazon any longer, but follow THIS LINK and find something similar!

(6) To Do List
I try to manage my todos electronically, but I just don’t follow through. I’m old school - I need a written list that I can cross off. I found this cute and colorful box that adds a bit of spunk to my desk. The lists are nice and thick and the best part - you can replace the paper when you run out!

(7) Bose SoundLink Micro
I’m a BOSE fan, have been for years. My earbuds and all my speakers are BOSE. I like the sound, it’s rich and full of base. I picked this Soundlink Micro waterproof portable bluetooth speaker up last year to fill my need for a small speaker to take with me wherever I need. When not traveling with me, it sits on my desk. UPDATE: I have switched to using BOSE QC Headphones. Since my desk is in a common living space in my home, I found these to be a better option.

(8) Samsung External SSD Drive
I’ve been using Samsung SSDs for some a few years now. Solid as ever. I use it as my primary backup drive and it hasn't missed a beat. I will say though, with storage prices skyrocketing, a nice alternative may be the SanDisk SSD, which I have used as well.

(9) Echo Show 5
While they don’t make this particular model any longer, they do have newer models available. The Echo 8 is probably the closest available option. This smart display is super handy and great for quickly looking things up (sans typing), controlling my smart appliances, getting a quick update on the news and weather and acts as a verbally responsive alarm clock. I use it every morning to video call my Mom!

ODDS & ENDS

Desk Mat
Grovemade makes some really beautiful desk mats, but once again, I couldn’t justify the cost. I picked up this nice Gallaway Leather Desk Mat on Amazon for a fraction of the cost. It not only looks nice but is the perfect mouse & writing pad.

To keep all my wires neatly organized behind the scenes, I picked up these Wire/Cable Labels and Cable Ties.

Satechi Mac Hub

The Satechi Mac Hub with SSD Enclosure iwas on my "future purchase" list in the original post. I finally got it and it's one of those purchases where you wonder what took you so long. It sits perfectly under the Mac Studio, adds USB and SD card ports right where I need them, and completely cleaned up my cable situation. There's also an optional SSD enclosure built in if you want additional storage. Highly recommend.

So... Mac Mini or Mac Studio in 2026?

This is the question I get asked most often now that the M4 chips are out.

Honest answer: for most people, the Mac Mini M4 will probably do the job. It's a genuinely capable machine at a fraction of the price and the M4 chip is no joke.

But if you're a professional photographer or videographer who lives in Lightroom and Photoshop all day, editing high-resolution files constantly... the Mac Studio is still the way to go. The extra headroom matters when it's your primary work machine and downtime isn't an option.

Whatever you choose, don't cheap out on RAM. Seriously. Buy more than you think you need. You can't upgrade it later and you will feel the difference every single day.

THE CAMERA BODY

Let’s start with the backbone of any photographer's kit: the camera bodies. As a proud user of Sony's innovative A7III and A7IV mirrorless cameras, I can attest to their remarkable capabilities in delivering stunning image quality and unparalleled performance. Whether I'm shooting portraits, landscapes, or events, these Sony cameras never fail to impress with their super fast autofocus, impressive dynamic range, and ergonomic design.

Questions I’m often asked:

• Which do you prefer, the A7iii or iv? Honestly, I love them equally. I tend to use the A7iii more in studio and the A7iv outdoors. The A7IV offers a higher-resolution sensor, improved autofocus capabilities with real-time eye autofocus for animals, and enhanced video features so it’s definitely more advanced, but both serve my purposes adequately.

• What about the A7R versions? The R versions offer higher resolution and better video capabilities, neither of which I have a need for in my business. Higher resolution is nice, but in all honesty it’s a royal pain to deal with post-processing. Since I don’t have many clients needing files large enough to print a billboard, nor do I do a ton of video, I saw no need to invest in an R.

• Why not Nikon Mirrorless? When I decided to go mirrorless years ago, Sony was leaps and bounds ahead of Nikon in mirrorless technology. Had I waited another year or two to switch I probably would have stuck with Nikon. I see some amazing work coming from the Nikon Z series. Will I ever switch back? Probably not. This gear is a significant investment that I don’t forsee in my future. I will however never give up my tried and true Nikon gear…

For those who prefer the reliability of DSLRs, the Nikon D750 and D810 remain steadfast choices in my arsenal. With their robust build quality, exceptional low-light performance, and precise handling, these Nikon cameras continue to be trusted companions on my photographic adventures. Of course, I have nothing against the other brands out there (I have tons of photographer friends who shoot Canon and Fuji), but I personally can’t speak to those brands.

LENSES

Lenses are the heart and soul of photography, wielding a profound influence on image quality and visual storytelling. Each lens type—whether it's a versatile zoom lens, a razor-sharp prime lens, or a specialized macro lens—brings its own unique perspective to the table. For this blog post I’m going to focus on the lenses that I rely on for 90% of my portrait works. For many years I carried an arsenal of lenses because you never know when you’re going to need each one, right? Well, let me tell you, after a decade of shooting portraits I’ve narrowed that collection down to two workhorses. As a matter of fact, when I bought my Sony Mirrorless cameras I only invested in these two lenses.

70-200mm f/2.8
This is my portrait workhorse. It allows me to achieve amazing bokeh and yet in a second I can zoom out to capture a quick-moving child. After owning my share of top-notch fixed lenses (including the Nikkor 200mm f/2 and 85mm f/1.4), nothing beats the versatility of a quality zoom lens for me.

I personally own the GM I, however the GM II is a very nice upgrade and honestly and it’s almost an entire pound lighter, not to mention better balanced. So if you are in the market for a SONY GM 70-200 f/2.8 and you can spare the expense, go for the newer version. That said, if you are on a budget you will NOT be disappointed with the first version. It’s a solid choice.

28-75mm f/2.8

My studio is small, and for as long as I’ve had it I’ve always relied on my 28-75mm 2.8. Do I have a 50mm and a 35mm prime? Sure do….but honestly, I never used them enough to warrant purchasing them for my Sony system. I don’t miss them at all. This lens is not only great for studio work, but it always goes with me on my outdoor shoots too. It’s perfect if I want to incorporate the landscape into a portrait.

For the last 10 years I have been more than happy using a Tamron for this lens. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve heard the Nikkor & Sony GM are amazing, but my Tamrons have achieved the results I demand so I’ve seen no need to change. Bonus: The Tamron is more wallet-friendly!

LIGHTING Equipment

Lighting equipment serves as the cornerstone of photography, playing a pivotal role in shaping mood, highlighting details, and creating captivating visuals. From speedlights to studio strobes and continuous lights, the options are as varied as the creative visions they illuminate. Speedlights offer portability and versatility, making them ideal for on-the-go shooting and off-camera lighting setups. Studio strobes, on the other hand, provide powerful bursts of light for controlled and precise lighting setups in studio environments. Continuous lights offer a constant light source, making them well-suited for video production and shooting in low-light conditions.

In-Studio
When it comes to lighting in the studio, I’m a huge fan of Paul C. Buff equipment. For many years I relied on Alien Bees until I upgraded to Einstein units which provided a bit more color consistency.

As for modifiers, I use softboxes for the majority of my work. I always have an octobox on hand because I am a fan of the catchlight shape it creates. Speaking of catchlights, for headshots and close ups you won’t find me without my Westcott Eyelighter. This piece of equipment is easily among my top 5 picks!

Outdoors
As a family photographer, I’m often chasing young children, so I don’t use off camera flash often, but when I do my go-to is the Godox AD200 & Godox AD200pro I just find it a highly portable and versatile lighting solution that packs a punch with a combination of speedlight and studio strobe capabilities.

Despite its compact size, this lighting unit delivers a powerful burst of light, allowing photographers to effectively illuminate their subjects even in challenging lighting conditions. Whether shooting in bright sunlight or low-light environments, the Godox AD200 ensures consistent and reliable lighting results. The best thing about this little gem is the price-point which hovers between $200-$350 depending on the model.

As parents, we often find ourselves learning valuable life lessons from our children. Recently, during a drive to summer camp where my soon-to-be 18-year-old daughter is working as a Junior Counselor, she surprised me when I asked he what age campers she wanted to work with. While I expected her to choose older campers because she could relate to them better, her response was unexpected and insightful.

My daughter, like many rising seniors, has been grappling with the pressure of making life-altering decisions about her future. Visiting colleges, studying for standardized tests, and applying for scholarships had consumed her life for the past six months. If you haven’t experienced this yet, let me tell you as a parent, this journey can be a very stressful experience for the whole family.

When I asked her why she wanted to work with the youngest campers, I was expecting her to mention the need for an escape from the pressures of college decisions. However, her answer was far more profound than I could have imagined. She expressed her desire to work with younger kids because of their unique ability to see the world differently than adults or older kids.

She said

“Because they think differently. If I were to ask older kids which college I should attend, they would have me weigh pros and cons, or provide info about someone they know who went to a particular university…all helpful, but if you ask a little kid the same question they would say something like, “Well, which college has prettier flowers?” and you know what…that is important too! It’s that little stuff that we forget about as we get older and it are those little things that allow us to enjoy life to the fullest".”

She went on to say that little kids have a special ability to ask questions that adults or older kids wouldn’t.

“What’s your favorite dinosaur? Who do you like more, Mickey or Minnie? Why?
“That’s the perspective I really NEED right now”.

This conversation resonated with me, especially as a photographer. I particularly love photographing young children because they view the world through a lens unburdened by practical concerns or societal expectations. You know….the one that puts you through the ringer often? If you have multiple children, chances are you know exactly what I’m talking about and it’s probably the second one….why is it always the second one? Anyway…if you do have one, and you’ve been putting off getting professional portraits because you don’t know what will happen - you will want to read this!

Kids are all unique

Some kids love having their photo taken, pose for the camera, follow direction and can just breeze through a photo session. Some kids are a bit more shy - they may take a little while to warm up, but once they do, well - the opportunity for smiling portraits are boundless. And some kids just follow the beat to their own drum. This is why Fotoplicity doesn’t put time limits on full sessions. Being able to “go with the flow” is so important when it comes to child-photography. Kids usually run the show and set the pace for a session, and that’s totally OK!

Strong willed & Irritable Teens

It’s no secret - teens can be difficult. That independence thing shows up again in this season of life - and along side it doubts about their looks, issues with self confidence and overall awkwardness. Teens “tantrums” tend to show up as moodiness and unwillingness to look at the camera, smile or look up from their phone.

Here’s the thing - while you may just want to skip the family photos due to a sulky teenager, please think twice. A family portrait may be just what they need to build up that self-confidence, and if you hang that portrait on the wall it may just allow them to see how important they are to your family.

PRO TIP: Sometimes stepping away from the session is the best thing you can do for your teen. Let them work with the photographer and show their independence without you hovering and making suggestions. For most, the second trimester (sometime between 28-36 weeks) is ideal. At this point your belly will be nice and round and you probably haven’t hit the real uncomfortable stage yet. After 36 weeks, your belly will start to feel very heavy, your feet may swell and honestly, taking portraits may not be appealing. It’s also important to remember that some babies like to make an early arrival so it’s best to be plan for that.

Pregnancies are all different

While the 28-36 week timeframe works for most, not all pregnancies are the same. If you are carrying multiples, are a high-risk pregnancy or are just feeling lousy you may be better off scheduling a bit earlier. Your bump may be quite visible as early as 24 weeks!

Still not sure? Talk to your photographer, be sure to bring up any concerns and together you will be able to decide the right time for you. Remember that the most important thing is for you to feel good!

When to Book Your Photographer

Now that you have an idea of when the best time for your shoot to take place, it’s important to know that you need to book your photographer well before that time. The longer you wait, the less likely your first-choice photographer will be available - remember, you have a very limited timeframe for getting in those pictures - baby doesn’t wait!

Here are five tips that help break down the process into digestible steps. Take a deep breath and dive in - I promise it really isn’t that hard!

2 - Choose A Color Palette

When dressing multiple people you want to coordinate, not match. Those days when everyone wears the same color shirt and a pair of dark wash jeans are over. Don’t do it! Instead, find inspiration around you. If you plan on displaying a large family portrait on the wall, choose colors that compliment your furniture. Consider the season - certain colors look better at different times of the year:

Winter: Cool whites, grey and blue tones work well. Also consider a bold pop of color!
Spring: A nice mix of pastel colors with some dominant greens always work well. Another great option is navy blue.
Summer: Fun florals and bright colors compliment the saturation and warmth of the season.
Fall: Burnt oranges, mustard yellow, red, purple and verdant greens are perfect for this show-stopper of a season.

Focus on finding ONE color you love. After that you can head to one of the many color palette generators online to find coordinating colors. Two of my favorite are listed below:

2 - Choose A Style

Clothing styles have been around since the dawn of time, making it one of the oldest forms of communication. From fine silk robes to everyday denim, style can be used to tell a story about who you are and where you come from. Clothing styles also provide a way for your family to express your collective identity and even show off your culture and traditions. Imagine your new portraits hanging in your home. What feeling do you get when you visualize the pictures? Casual & fun? Formal & dressy? Chic & stylish? What style resonates with your family the most?

No matter what you select, as long as you keep the entire family within the boundaries of that style, your family portrait will look cohesive.

3 - Start With The Most Difficult Dresser

Once you have selected your style and color palette, it’s time to dig in. The biggest tip I have for you is to select an out fit for the the person who is the most difficult to dress first. You want this person to have the widest of choices. Once they find their perfect outfit you can base everyone else off of them. I can’t tell you how much easier your life will be if you follow this one tip!!!!

4 - Comfort is Key!

Choosing comfortable clothing ensures that everyone will feel relaxed during the photo session. It will leave you in a better state of mind while posing and having your picture taken which will help create natural photos with genuine expressions. This is even more important for children. Nothing will sabotage a photoshoot more than a scratchy sweater or tight shoes!

5 - Accessorize

Accessories can pull any outfit (or group of outfits) together. Consider things like a statement necklace or scarf to add a pop of color. Sunglasses or a hat can be added in for a few photos to easily create a different look or vibe. Really, have fun thinking of some small things that can make a big impact. Have fun with it!

Remember, photos should be fun & timeless, which means your outfits need to be too!

You smile and say, "Oh, that's nice honey...." quickly running through all your goto excuses trying to figure out which one you're going to use that will let you escape the dreaded camera...again.  You decide on, "...but my hair is all messy - why don't you go take one with Uncle Tom?"

"But Mommy!  You look beautiful!  P L E A S E ?  We can make silly faces!"

"I want to finish up my meal, OK?  Maybe later...."

"Pleeeeaaaaasssssse Mommy?  I want YOU in the picture with me...."

"No, not now.  Find Uncle Tom - he'll take a silly picture with you."

You watch the light slowly disappear from your child's eyes - he/she knows that you won't be taking a picture today, or any other day.  He/she sadly walks away to go find Uncle Tom.

The Mom guilt sets in, but you just can't bring yourself to have your picture taken.  You weren't planning on it...you're makeup isn't right and you still need to lose that extra 10 pounds....  A photo is just going to remind you of all those things you are currently unhappy with about your looks and your body.

Sound familiar?

I can't tell you how many Moms I know to who absolutely avoid being in photos...it's not they don't "want" to be in the pictures, but they have this irrational belief that they are not good enough to be in the photos.  And YES...this is IRRATIONAL and even worse, it's damaging.  Damaging to us and our families.

I admit that I'm guilty as well, but here is the thing....  THIS IS NOT OK.

Look at this photograph.  What do you see? This photograph is priceless because it shows a genuine moment between Mom and Daughter.  There is nothing but love in their hearts and eyes.   Every single mother should be willing to let go of their self-esteem and allow for something like this to be captured on camera.  This little girl will cherish this photograph forever.

UNCONDITIONAL LOVE

WE EXIST & WE MATTER (A LOT)

Here is a little eye-opener for you... pick up your phone and open your photo app.   Put it in gallery mode and quickly glance through your photos...based on your quick scroll, what percentage of photos are you actually in?  50%, 30%, 10%?   My guess is that most of you will probably say 10% or less.  That's really depressing isn't it?  If a stranger were to pick up your phone, they probably wouldn't know you exist, would they?  The thing is, us Moms are the engine that runs our families!  Everything pretty much revolves around us!  But yet, we don't value ourselves enough to allow our image to be taken.  Crazy.

WE HAVE A STORY

As much as we embrace motherhood and live it day in and day out, that isn't the only thing that defines us.  Each of us has a personal story (or stories) that brought us to this point in our lives.  It is that story that has made us who we are and it is that story that is oh so important for us to share with our children.

Photographs are a great way to share and celebrate your story.  They also serve as a great reminder that you do indeed have a STORY!

OUR CHILDREN NEED DOCUMENTED MEMORIES

Let's face the hard truth....we are not going to be around forever.  Whether that day comes tomorrow or 50 years from now, it's going to happen.  And when that does happen, it will be even more important that your children have photos of you to remember you by and images that they can show their children and grandchildren when they re-tell your story and teachings.  The other day I was speaking with a Mom who had just rattled off about 3 of the excuses from above.  When I explained how all those things were not important to her children and that they would need documentation of her existence I noticed her eyes start to well with tears.  She then told me that her Mom had just recently passed and how she and her siblings poured over hundreds of photographs to display at her funeral and could only find one because her Mom never wanted to be in the pictures.  She then went on to tell me how sad this made her because to her, her Mom was the WORLD and now that she was gone, she had barely any evidence of her existence.  

OUR CHILDREN LEARN FROM US

From the moment they come out of our womb, we worry about how they will be affected by society, pressure, and all of life's challenges.  We want only the best for our children and hope that we provide them with all the tools they need to be self-confident individuals who are willing and able to go out and get what they want from life.  We preach to them about how they should not let nay-sayers stop them, or how no matter what anyone says, they are beautiful and valued.  And then they see us, the most important role-model in their life, shy away from a camera because we aren't good enough.  What does this teach them?  We need to show them that despite our messy hair, our extra weight and our lack of makeup that we love who we are!  Actions speak louder than words.  Don't sabotage your life lessons with you own insecurities.  Embrace who you are and be PROUD.  Remember, to your child, you ARE a model.  They don't see those extra 20 pounds, they don't see that freckle on your forehead or that mole you are so self conscious of....what they see is their MOM.  The woman who wakes them up every morning, cooks them dinner, washes their hair, kisses their boo-boos, sings them bed-time songs and plays Candyland with them.  YOU ARE THEIR EVERYTHING.

The next time your child draws a picture of you or writes you a little letter telling you how much they love you take it to heart.  Bottle that stuff up and let it build up your confidence.  THIS is what matters.  THIS is what they will remember.  THIS is EVERYTHING.

You owe it to yourself and your children to have some unconditional love for yourself.

Photographs aren't about looking like super models....photographs are about LIFE.  We owe it to our children to put these superficial insecurities aside and get in the picture for several reasons...so the next time the opportunity arises, throw caution and excuses to the wind and jump in the picture knowing that you are providing a visual memory of yourself for your children that they can cherish forever.

Give them visual proof of how loved they truly are!
