SUMMER AIR: After a cool weekend, a surge of warm and muggy air is in the cards for the week ahead. Expect 70s and 80s with sunshine and humid, summery air for the next several days. Each day also features the shot at some thunderstorms with all the added heating. Each night will be muggy and foggy too.

Today, we start cloudy, foggy, muggy, and drizzly. By afternoon, the sun will make a return appearance. Temperatures will react nicely, warming to the upper 70s to near 80° in spots. Isolated showers and storms are possible. And it’s sticky out there too! Overnight we’re back to the middle 60s with fog developing.

80S WEEK: Well at least on the thermometer. A ridge of unseasonably warm air will firmly lock in for Tuesday and Wednesday. Expect temps to make a run at the middle and upper 80s both days. Isolated rain chances are in the forecast for Tuesday with a good deal of sun mixing with clouds. Wednesday, a frontal system is approaching so expect a few more clouds and some showers and storms. Thursday, we’re watching the front moving through which holds us to the upper 70s and adds showers and storms to the forecast at a higher quantity. Keep in mind, when we have this much moisture and warmth, any of the storms could be a little bumpy with hail and damaging winds, so we’ll need to watch them.

BACK TO REALITY: We’re clearing on Friday with only a tiny shower chance early. Temps fall as some cooler air dips in from the north. Expect highs in the low 70s. For Memorial Day weekend, Saturday and Sunday look gorgeous with plenty of sun and drier, more comfortable air. Highs will be near 70° both days.

Happy Monday. Make it an exceptional week!

Lancaster General Hospital held an EMS appreciation picnic today to honor medical personnel. The event was held at the Public Safety training center in Manheim.

More than 200 emergency medical service providers and their families came together to promote safety and honor those who provide day to day lifesaving services.

“The focus is on EMS and family with a specific focus this year on healthy heroes. We think it’s important to take a moment and recognize what the EMS providers do for Lancaster County and the outstanding patient care they provide each and everyday,” said Lancaster General Hospital EMS Communications Director, Ron Baier.

Each year, more than 100,000 patients are treated at Lancaster General Health’s Emergency and Trauma centers.

Keystone Pet Enhanced Therapy Services held it’s annual Patriot Pet Expo on Sunday at Grater Memorial Park in Ephrata, Lancaster County.
The focus of the event was a walk to raise money for K_PETS to keep their service running free of charge to people in the community.
The day included everything from food, vendors, and raffles, to animals.
Karen Girth, Founder & Executive Director of K-PETS says, “Ten years ago, I never dreamed it would be this big. We have 350 volunteers serving Lancaster and the surrounding counties, over 200 facilities and different agencies all free of charge. So, this is how we keep our organization going by having fundraisers like this.”
The goal of the two mile walk along Cocalico Creek was to raise more than $10,000.

The National transportation Safety Board wants states to toughen up alcohol limits for drivers. It’s suggesting lowering the legal blood alcohol content level from .08 to .05. The idea of this change is getting mixed reaction.

“When you consume alcohol there is an effect on the body even when you consume it in smaller amounts,” said York County District Attorney Tom Kearney. “Anytime you can stop somebody who is impaired you have the potential to and probably because people don’t get in accidents and kill each other do to some degree save lives. To what extent this will happen is anybody’s guess at this time.”

The NTSB cannot make or enforce laws, but can it can recommend that states make the change. It’s a change that would likely impact those in the business of selling alcohol.

“Everybody in the hospitality industry is definitely going to feel a little bit of the effects of this. It’s definitely going to get us geared a little bit more towards adapting,” said Tim DeFrank, the front house manager at Cobblestone’s. “We’re going to look a little less at quantity and a little more at quality, you know the whole craft beer era is really starting to chime in.”

Some people say this change would be targeting the wrong people.

“It’s probably going to tie up law enforcement in a way that it shouldn’t be. They’re going to be worried about these people who they shouldn’t, who have had a couple of drinks at dinner. Instead of worrying about the things that really do matter,” said Ryan Durkin of York.

A weak stationary boundary combined with a southeasterly flow continues to keep clouds over the region. Some minor clearing takes place during the evening, but clouds to remain dominant through the overnight period. With air temperatures dipping close to dew point temperatures once more, some foggy and drizzly areas form again. Lows fall back into the upper 50s to lower 60s across the Lower Susquehanna Valley.

SUMMER WARMTH

This shows one model’s forecasted high temperatures for Monday.

Monday the pattern begins to warm dramatically. There is the possibility for some showers, mainly during the morning, but an afternoon thunderstorm cannot be ruled out. Afternoon drying and clearing allows temperatures to reach the upper 70s as a strong upper level ridge sets up. Tuesday looks to be the warmest day of the week, with highs reaching the middle to upper 80s. There is the chance for a few isolated thunderstorms with a front that sets up to our north. Wednesday we see a better chance for thunderstorms as this front creeps closer, but high temperatures should still remain unseasonably warm, in the middle 80s. If thunderstorm activity is less numerous than expected during the afternoon, some locations could make a go at the 90 degree mark.

COOLING BACK DOWN

A front swings through the area Thursday, keeping scattered showers and thunderstorms in the forecast. Highs fall back into the 70s. Friday dries out, with temperatures near the 70 degree mark. Saturday looks to be much cooler, with more by way of sunshine. Highs reach the middle to upper 60s. Sunday, the sunshine continues across the state. Temperatures are expected to be near seasonable averages, in the lower 70s.

Have a great week!

-Andrea Michaels

By Karen Brooks and Steve Gorman

A single winning ticket for a record U.S. Powerball lottery jackpot worth $590.5 million was sold in Florida, organizers said late on Saturday, but there was no immediate word about who won or where in the state the ticket was bought.

The winning numbers from Saturday night’s drawing were: 10, 13, 14, 22 and 52, with a Powerball number of 11, and the odds of winning were put at one in 175 million.

The winning ticket was sold at a Publix supermarket in Zephyrhills, a suburb of Tampa, according to CNN.

The grand prize, accumulated after two months of drawings, surpassed the previous record Powerball payoff of $587.5 million, set in November 2012, but fell short of the $600 million sum lottery officials had been advertising.

Organizers had said the final jackpot total could end up slightly higher or lower than expected depending on final sales reported by all 43 participating states, plus the District of Columbia and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

The largest jackpot in U.S. history stands at $656 million, won in the Mega Millions lottery of March 2012. That prize was split between winners in Maryland, Kansas and Illinois.

The Multi-State Lottery Association, based in Iowa, announced Saturday’s Powerball results in a brief message on its website, saying, “There was one winner sold by the Florida Lottery for the last drawing’s $590,500,000 grand prize.”

There was no further information immediately disclosed about the winning ticket, such as where in Florida it was sold or whether more than one individual purchased it.

Had Saturday’s drawing failed to yield a winner, the jackpot for the next drawing, set for Wednesday, would have risen to $925 million. After Saturday’s results were announced, the jackpot was reset back to $40 million.

“IF I WIN”

The extremely long odds of winning did not deter people from buying up tickets at staggering rates. California was selling $1 million in tickets every hour on Saturday, said Donna Cordova, a spokeswoman for the California Lottery, which has only been selling Powerball tickets since April 8.

Texas Lottery officials reported $1.2 million in hourly sales between 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. local time, with ticket sales for the Saturday draw topping $18.4 million.

The ticket sale rate on Saturday was nearly double Friday’s rate, Kelly Cripe, a spokeswoman for the Texas Lottery, said, and a jump of some 686 percent over last Saturday.

Many Americans were playing the “if I win” game ahead of Saturday’s drawing.

“If I win, I’m going to spend a lot of it on liquor, women and gambling,” said Austin lawyer Donald Dickson. “I’ll likely squander the rest of it.”

In New York City, talent acquisition agent Michelle Amici was more philanthropic. “Not sure that I’d buy anything,” she said. “Rather, I’d attempt to quench my wanderlust by traveling the world. I’d also donate a large portion to education reform.”

Lottery players such as Austin marketing professional Becky Arreaga were not discouraged by the long odds.

“As long as the odds are 1 in anything, I’m in,” said Arreaga, a partner at Mercury Mambo marketing firm. “I truly believe I could be the one.”

The $2 tickets allow players to pick five numbers from 1 to 59, and a Powerball number from 1 to 35.

“It’s only a couple bucks for a small daydream,” said Russell Williams, 35, a salesman in Austin, Texas.

One person is dead and two others injured after a wrong-way crash along Route 30 in Lancaster County early Sunday morning. Passing motorists called 911 moments before the crash happened to report a wrong-way driver headed east in the westbound lanes of Route 30 near Hill Street in Mountville Borough. Seconds later, the 27-year-old Wrightsville woman driving a tan 2006 Hyundai Elantra slammed head-on into a westbound 2002 Ford Taurus carrying two people, police said.

All three people were taken to Lancaster General Hospital. The male passenger of the Taurus later died.

Police have not released the identities of the victims.

Both drivers remain hospitalized.

Police are looking into whether or not alcohol played a role in the crash.

Anyone who may have witnessed the accident should contact police at 717-285-5191.

Route 30 was reopened around 7:30 a.m.
