Liz Claman Celebrates 1,000 Episodes

Chris Quinn of the San Antonio Express-News writes about how Fox Business Network anchor Liz Claman has now down 1,000 episodes of “Countdown to the Closing Bell.”

Quinn writes, “‘Countdown’ covers the financial world for both savvy money men as well as the blue collar workers and small business owners that pin their futures to investments in their 401(k)’s and other retirement ventures.

“‘What we always wanted to do in this show is not act like a day trading show but to cater to everybody,’ she said. Claman also noted that she and those behind the show are always mindful of their audience and make sure they don’t throw out catchy ‘buzz words’ without explaining them.

“Now you can take a wild guess as to the other financial shows that might fall into the ‘buzz word’ category, but I have a hunch it is from the competition and comes with a balding head.

“Her style, Claman said, is more subdued — she doesn’t need to ‘yell and scream and wave my arms around’ to get her points across or deliver the news.”

Fox Business Network is 'Cost Neutral' says Ailes

Fox Business Network, which launched in October 2007, is now “cost neutral,” said Roger Ailes, the president of the Fox News Channel and chairman of the Fox Television stations group.

Ailes, 71, added that the network, which competes against CNBC, spends about $150 million for its programming compared to the $800 million spent for programming at Fox News.

“Business news is a small niche,” said Ailes, who ran CNBC for 2 1/2 years. “It’s not surprising that Fox Business is where it is.”

Ailes spoke Thursday evening at the UNC-Chapel Hill School of Journalism and Mass Communication. He noted that he was due to receive a $3 million bonus if he could make Fox Business Network break even by June 2012. That occurred in June 2011, “so I could afford to come to see you today,” he quipped.

Fox Business Network is currently in 58 million to 60 million homes, said Ailes, compared to 90 million homes for CNBC.

The business news channel “is doing pretty well,” said Ailes.

Fox Business Show Beats CNBC Show in Same Time Slot

Chris Ariens of TVNewser.com reports that a Fox Business Network show has drawn more viewers than a CNBC show in the same time slot for the first time in the network’s four-and-a-half year existence.

Ariens writes, “For the first time in its 4 1/2 year life, a program on the Fox Business Network has topped a show on CNBC for an entire week in both Total Viewers and younger viewers. Last week, in head-to-head competition at 7pmET, ‘Lou DobbsTonight’ beat ‘The Kudlow Report’ (Mon-Thurs, and a Friday airing of a CNBC documentary) by 18,000 Total Viewers.

• Dobbs — 154,000 Total Viewers / 44,000 A25-54 viewers
• Kudlow — 136,000 Total Viewers / 35,000 A25-54 viewers

“A few weeks ago Dobbs topped Kudlow in younger viewers for the week. Dobbs’ show joined the Fox Business scheduled a little over a year ago. Dobbs hosted a 7pm show for many years on CNN before joining FBN in 2010. The win comes despite the fact that CNBC is available in 99 million homes vs. FBN’s 58 million.”

Fox Business Plans to Shuffle Daytime Lineup

Fox Business Network is planning to shift its daytime lineup, reports Jeff Reeves of InvestorPlace.com.

Reeves writes, “While Dagen McDowell and Connell McShane will remain anchoring at 11 a.m., the volatile Dennis Kneale will soon join Cheryl Casone to host the noon hour. Melissa Francis – FBN’s newest add – and Lori Rothman will continue co-hosting the 1 p.m. hour, with Tracy Byrnes and Ashley Webster taking over as the new hosts of the 2 p.m. slot.

“Varney & Co has seen strong numbers of late, averaging nearly 160,000 viewers at one point in the last few weeks. FOX Business is hoping to build on that level of momentum with these new anchor assignments.

“Word is – FBN’s changes will possibly happen sometime in April.”

Melissa Francis to make Fox Business Debut on Monday

Mediaite is reporting late Friday that Melissa Francis, who left CNBC late last year, is scheduled to make her Fox Business Network debut on Monday.

Mediaite reports, “Mediaite readers might remember her for this crackling exchange with Morning Joe host Joe Scarborough, in which she chided him for his dismissive attitude toward the disruptive potential of the Occupy Wall Street protesters.

“Francis earned the nickname ‘Empress of Energy’ for her coverage, on CNBC, of oil and commodities. When she joined CNBC in 2003, she was the first reporter to broadcast live from the floor of New York Mercantile Exchange, providing live hourly reports for the network and distinguishing herself as the foremost expert on commodities.

“Before joining CNBC, Francis was a correspondent for CNET’s broadcast unit, where she covered finance, technology and consumer products. Prior to CNET, Francis served as a reporter for News 12 New Jersey and an anchor for various New England television stations in Hartford, Manchester, and Providence. She also served as producer for WCSH-TV in Portland, Maine, and researcher for the MacNeil/Lehrer NewsHour. Francis holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in economics from Harvard University.”

Fox Business Contributor Drops F-bomb on the Air

Charles Payne, a contributor to Fox Business Network‘s “Varney & Co.” show, said a cuss word on the air Thursday, according to the Huffington Post.

The Post writes, “He voiced his support for the proposed program, and recalled his own experience working as a teenager. He made the slip saying, ‘I’ll never forget one guy I worked for, Mr. Hoover! He taught me how to count change, he taught me how to make sausage, he taught me how to f–king wake up in the morning and do what I was supposed to do!’

“Payne covered his mouth in shock as soon as he realized what he had said. Later, co-host Stuart Varney said, ‘Varney & Company apologizing for Charles getting carried away.’

“Payne added, ‘I apologize for that, that was a slip!’”

FBN's Largest Key Audience during Biz Day Occurs in the Morning

Fox Business Network gets its largest number of viewers in the key 25 to 54 age bracket for the business day before noon, according to Nielsen data provided to Talking Biz News from an independent third party.

Its largest number of viewers in that key demographic occurs between 10 a.m. and 11 a.m., according to date for October. In October 2011, Fox Business had 17,000 viewers during that hour, up from 14,000 viewers in that same hour during October 2010.

Its second-biggest audience in that key demographic occurs in the 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. and the 11 a.m. to noon slots, when it had 10,000 viewers in October. The viewers were unchanged from October 2010 in the 9 a.m. hour, but down 2,000 viewers for October in the 11 a.m. hour.

Fox Business anchor Stuart Varney‘s show begins at 9:20 and runs until 11 a.m. It is followed by “Fox Business,” which begins at 11 a.m. and runs until 3 p.m.

The data also shows that Fox Business business day programming is not getting much of an audience from the “Imus in the Morning” show that runs on the network from 6 a.m. to 9:20 a.m. That show had just 4,000 viewers in the 25-54 demographic in October, down from 6,000 viewers in that demographic in October 2010.

Fox Business averaged 8,000 to 9,000 viewers in the 25-54 demographic for each hour in October after noon until 4 p.m., when the average dropped to 5,000 viewers. Viewership was up slightly from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. compared to October 2010.

The network’s afternoon shows include “Closing Bell” with Liz Claman, which runs from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m., and then “After the Bell,” which features Claman and David Asman.

Four Tears Later, Fox Business Treading Water

D.M. Levine of AdWeek writes Thursday about the ratings of Fox Business Network, which celebrated its four-year anniversary last month.

Levine writes, “It was an abysmal month for Fox News’ young sibling channel. Fox Business Network saw an average daily viewership of around 65,000 for October, according to Nielsen, which also happened to be the month of the network’s four-year anniversary. In its target 25-54 demo, though, Fox Business only drew an average of 10,000 viewers per day. This, compared to the network’s chief competitor, CNBC, which saw around 201,000 viewers on average and 59,000 in the 25-54 age group. A source familiar with the network says that four years in, they expected Fox Business to be performing ‘a lot better than 10,000 in the target demo.’

“Adding to the network’s woes is the fact that Don Imus’ program, Imus in the Morning, which Fox Business debuted in 2009 as the network’s daily morning kickoff program, is performing miserably—with an average of just 5,000 daily viewers in the target demographic for the month and 90,000 total viewers. By comparison, Squawk Box, which airs on FBN’s chief competitor CNBC at the same time as Imus’ show, received 179,000 total viewers on average for the month and outdelivered Imus in the target demographic by more than 1,100 percent, with 65,000 viewers.

“There is one relatively bright spot for Fox Business—its early prime-time 4 p.m.-8 p.m. slate, which includes shows like Cavuto and Lou Dobbs Tonight. The network pulled around 85,000 average daily viewers for the month, including 12,000 viewers in its target demographic, during those hours. But even that figure is still well behind the 212,000 total viewers CNBC received for that same time slot.”

WSJ Deal with Fox Business is Not a Done Deal

The Wall Street Journal has not decided if it will form a partnership with Fox Business — since both are owned by News Corp. — similar to the newspaper’s current arrangement with CNBC when that deal ends next year, the Journal’s top editor told Joe Strupp of Media Matters for America.

Strupp writes, “When asked if the Journal would forge a similar deal with Fox Business once the CNBC arrangement ends, Thomson said:

“‘Not necessarily. Because, in part, you look at what’s happening with WSJ Live and the amount of video we are doing ourselves. The possible permutations are far more than that presumption allows.’

“Asked if there could be an outcome where the Journal is not aligned with Fox Business as it has been with CNBC, Thomson again left the door open.

“‘Quite honestly, we just have to examine what the options are at the time. Before then, we have contractual obligations to CNBC which we will honor.’

“He later added: ‘In the end, there are all sorts of ways of looking at it. If you look at Fox Business news and what they’ve done and how they’re building it up, it’s an increasingly successful operation. So you have that on one hand.

“‘On the other hand, clearly, you can see from what we’re doing on WSJ.com, WSJ Live, the app, we’re doing, depending on the day, three to four hours of video ourselves now. That’s another option.’”

Fox Biz Head Encourages Network to Cover more Business News

Kevin Magee, who runs Fox Business Network, has sent a memo to the network’s staffers telling them to cover more business and economics topics and fewer political topics, reports Peter Lauria of Reuters.

Lauria writes, “Unhappy with Fox Business’ focus on politics, Magee fired off a memo to employees reminding them that the network was not created to be a light version of its sister Fox News Channel.

“‘I’ve been asked to remind you all again that they are separate channels and the more we make FBN look like FNC the more of a disservice we do to ourselves,’ Magee said in the memo dated October 5, carrying the subject line ‘Fox News and Fox Business.’

“‘I understand the temptation to imitate our sibling network in hopes of imitating its success, but we cannot,’ Magee went on to say in the memo. ‘If we give the audience a choice between FNC and the almost-FNC, they will choose FNC every time. Earnings, taxes, jobs etc give us PLENTY to chew on.’

“Fox Business, which was launched in October 2007 with $100 million in initial capital, sought to take Wall Street to Main Street by covering business stories for ordinary people — seeing a market as CNBC and Bloomberg Television cater primarily to financial professionals.”

Assessing the Future WSJ and Fox Business Relationship

Terry Baker, a former executive producer at Fox Business Network, was interviewed by Joe Strupp of Media Matters for America about issues relating to the business news network, including its relationship with The Wall Street Journal, which is also owned by News Corp.

Strupp writes, “He said a long-time agreement between the Journal and CNBC made it difficult for Fox Business to capitalize on the Journal brand, a situation he predicts will change at the end of 2012 when the CNBC deal ends.

“‘I don’t think this is any secret of what’s going to happen a year from now when suddenly it is possible to pair up the Wall Street Journal and the Fox Business Network. I think strategically you have to ask that question.

“‘And then, frankly I don’t know what the right answer is. Do you throw it all into The Wall Street Journal thing? Do you change the name? Do you get rid of it all together and go completely online? Who knows? But I think that’s an issue. I think, and whether or not it stays, let’s say they can figure out a way that the numbers work and it’s worth continuing the investment because Rupert wants to have a business network. Okay, so do you have the Wall Street Journal people run that and get rid of all the people who are there now? There are a lot of questions. But truthfully, it’s only ever going to be a niche channel anyway because that’s just what business channels are.’

“He also said some Journal staff may be reluctant to be linked to Fox Business.

“‘I don’t think there’s any question that there probably are or have been people at the Journal who didn’t want to be bought by Rupert Murdoch or don’t want to be on Fox Business or Fox News, that wouldn’t surprise me at all,’ Baker said. ‘Whether they’re right or wrong, I don’t know. But just knowing the business as we both do, you can understand why that attitude might exist in some circles. I don’t know whether that gets better. I mean if they marry the two then there’s certainly greater potential for that conflict to be out in the open.’

Fox Business Network's Gasparino Says Morgan Stanley Threatened Him

The Huffington Post has reported that Fox Business Network reporter Charles Gasparino believes he received a death threat from a Morgan Stanley representative in late September.

The post states, “Earlier in the day, he published an exclusive story about how James Gorman, the CEO of Morgan Stanley, called some analysts on Thursday to tell them that despite rumors, the bank is not overexposed to troubled European banks and, in the words of Gasparino, ‘imploding.’

“A public relations representative from Morgan Stanley, apparently unhappy with the article, called Gasparnio and left him a ‘nasty’ voicemail. Thinking she’d hung up, she said I’m going to kill him one of these days,’ according to Gasparino.

“He explained more during the 3:00 p.m. EDT hour of FBN, where colleague Liz Claman had a tough time keeping a straight face (clearly, she thought Gasparino was being just a tad dramatic).

“‘Morgan Stanley is not going to silence me with death threats,’ he said as Claman chuckled. ‘I was threatened today. It was a death threat issued by one of their PR people. And they will not silence me.’”

Ailes Receives News Corp Stock Due to Fox Business Performance

Roger Ailes, the chairman and chief executive officer of Fox, a News Corp. subsidiary, has received stock in the parent company due to the financial performance of Fox Business Network.

News Corp.’s proxy, which was released Friday, states, “In addition, pursuant to the terms of his employment agreement, Mr. Ailes is also entitled to receive an award of 250,000 shares of our Class A Common Stock when EBITDA of the Fox Business Channel is equal to or greater than $0 (the ‘Bonus Stock’). Accordingly, based on the achievement of this milestone for fiscal 2011, Mr. Ailes was awarded 250,000 shares of Class A Common Stock in fiscal 2012.”

In other words, Fox Business Network, which launched in October 2007, broke even during the past fiscal year.

The stock was trading at $16.25 on Friday afternoon, making the shares worth a bit more than $4 million to Ailes.

In addition, Ailes also received a $5 million salary and a $1.5 million bonus during the 2011 fiscal year. His total compensation for the year was $15.5 million, up from the $13.9 million he received the year before.

According to the proxy, Ailes would receive 350,000 shares when the EBITDA of the Fox Business Network is equal to or greater than $100 million.

Madoff Cancels Interview with Gasparino of Fox Business

Charles Gasparino of Fox Business Network reports that convicted Ponzi scheme Bernie Madoff has canceled an interview with him after Gasparino reported that Harvard Business School said it was not working with Madoff to teach ethics at the school, something that Madoff has told Gasparino.

Gasparino writes, “Madoff also doesn’t like being called an egomaniac. In my FBN story, I quoted Keith Ablow, a psychiatrist and Fox News contributor, who made the point that Madoff may be reaching out to various members of the press to brag about his alleged involvement with the Harvard Business School among other things because of a pathological need to feel important, particularly now that he’s been exposed as a fraud who must spend the rest of his life in jail.

“‘As for your comments about my use of the media to somehow feed my ego,” Madoff writes, ‘Of the more than one hundred requests I have received world wide, I have only granted three interviews two for books and one for the London Financial Times, who like you wrongly reported that I was working on an Ethics course.’

“Just to clarify Madoff’s assertions once again, my reporting involved his claim that he’s working on an entrepreneurial course: I merely cited other reporting on the ethics course, which contained no visible corrections other than Harvard’s continued denials.

“Finally, Madoff appears annoyed about some of the comments I made particularly in an interview with Bianna Golodryga of ABC’s Good Morning America that he’s estranged from his wife Ruth, son Andrew and that he shows little remorse over the death of his other son, Mark, who committed suicide last year.”

The Slow, Steady Growth of Fox Business

Sarah Barry James of SNL Financial in Charlottesville, Va., looks at Fox Business Network and its growth in a story where its subsidiary SNL Kagan projects the network will have $169.4 million in operating revenue in 2012 and be in more than 72 million homes.

James writes, “‘The thing that strikes me about CNBC is just how old it is with the high median age of the viewer,’ Adgate said. ‘Again, that stems from the limitations of Nielsen to measure viewing outside of the home. You have a lot of retired people who are home watching their investments or doing day trading.’

“Younger viewers, meanwhile, might be watching CNBC or FOX Business at work, but those eyeballs are not counted.

“Compiling data from Nielsen, Adgate tracked the viewership of FOX Business and CNBC between May 2010 and April 2011. He found that during prime time, FOX Business has a 0.04 household rating, with 47,000 households viewing. During the broadcast day, the network’s household rating was still 0.04, with 48,000 households viewing. Looking at just the workweek between 10 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., the network’s household rating was 0.05, with 55,000 households viewing. The median age for viewers during those three day parts was 61.8 years, 62.4 years and 61.2 years, respectively.

“By comparison, NBCUniversal Media LLC‘s CNBC had a household rating of 0.15 during prime time with 178,000 households viewing, a broadcast day household rating of 0.15 with 169,000 households viewing, and a workday rating of 0.21 with 247,000 households viewing. The median age for viewers during those three day parts, respectively, was 54.8 years, 60.5 years and 64.9 years.”

Time Warner Cable Pulls Fox Business Commercial Critical of CNBC

Richard Huff of the New York Daily News reports that a Fox Business Network commercial critical of rival CNBC was pulled from the air by Time Warner Cable, where the Fox network had purchased time.

Huff writes, “The ‘gone fishin” spots were placed locally to run in the national network, a common practice for advertisers looking to get cross network promotion without having to go through the main channels.

“CNBC would never willingly sell ad time to FBN, but Time Warner did, where the spots reached metropolitan area subscribers.

“Word is, FBN bought the time to run throughout the week. However, by Monday afternoon, the ‘gone fishin” promos taking a jab at CNBC were gone.

“Given TWC initially ran the ads and then stopped them, does, however, raise a question of whether the cable giant was influenced by outside forces to make a change or came to the decision on its own.

“‘We were not asked to remove the spot,’ a TWC spokesperson said. ‘We made the decision based on inappropriate content.’

“Asked to elaborate on ‘inappropriate content,’ the spokesperson declined to comment further.”

News Corp Executives - Fox Business is Beating CNBC

News Corp., the parent of Fox Business Network and The Wall Street Journal, reported its quarterly earnings on Wednesday, and during the question-and-answer period with management, president Chase Carey and CEO Rupert Murdoch made remarks about how Fox Business was doing against rival CNBC.

The question came from Citigroup analyst Jason Bazinet, who said, “Just had just a question on one of your cable channels, Fox Business. It seems like there’s quite a bit of excitement about the asset. A number of years ago I think you got carriage in New York, which was a key gating factor. You seem to have hired quite a bit of talent from CNBC. But it doesn’t seem to show up on the ratings and you don’t even mention that one of the under monetized assets at least in your prepared remarks. So can you just give us an update on where you are.”

Murdoch: Yes, the ratings are in fact improving. And certain times of the day we’re head-to-head with CNBC. We’re beating them. We do need more distribution that’s true. As for regards to performance, it is now a catch for beating them.

Carey: And in fact it’s got great growth. It’s a better channel today than it was 12 months ago. They’ve done a good job. Fox News didn’t grow overnight. Fox Business doesn’t grow overnight. I think trailers made real headway and really actually I could have put it on the list but I was getting selective. It was more an example why it’s not all-inclusive. To say the ones I didn’t mention by excluding them wasn’t saying that we’re not excited by them and we really are.

Fox Business has made great strides as Rupert said. We got a couple of holes in distribution that we got to fill. One, which we got a handle on. And we think this channel really is an exciting growth area for us as well and I think really adds some exciting dimension to Fox News business.

A CNBC spokesman replied, “CNBC is far and away the leader in viewership, revenue and operating profit in the U.S. and around the world and no one else even comes close.

FBN to Air Sunday Night Special 'Willis Report' as Asian Markets React

Markets in Asia will be the first to react to the downgrade by Standard and Poor's of the US credit rating to AA+ status from AAA.

Fox Business Network will be airing a special edition of the 'Willis Report' at 9pm ET to guage the reaction from the first hours of Asian trading, and looking for any benchmark in how the rest of the world's markets are likely to treat the unprecedented, but not unexpected news.

Liz Claman on Covering the Ugly Sell-off

Mark Joyella of Mediaite talked Thursday with Fox Business Network anchor Liz Claman about what it was like covering the drop in the stock market.

Joyella writes, “Fox Business anchor Liz Claman was working the phones – talking to Warren Buffett – when she looked up and saw the Dow heading down. ‘At that point we were down a couple of hundred points,’ Claman told Mediaite. ‘I rushed down to the New York Stock Exchange to find that all the traders were pretty concerned, but calm – saying it didn’t feel like panic selling. “It made for a very long, very busy day for Claman, who reported live from the floor of the NYSE–not just for Fox Business, but also Fox News Channel–for hours of uninterrupted coverage. And she did it all, Claman told us, in some stylish but hardly foot-friendly shoes. ‘I was in these ridiculous Gucci gladiator heels charging around the trading floor. When I’m live on the floor, I always request a cameraman who will kick it with me…I refuse to stand there and just be tethered.’

“All those hours in ‘gladiator heels’ may take a toll this weekend, when Claman’s competing – and raising money for charity – in the New York City Triathlon. ‘I kept thinking, ‘Oy vey, there goes my running time for the Triathlon!’. Seriously, on days like this, the most important task at hand is to get the viewer the story as clearly and concisely as possible from the front row seat of the NYSE. As long as I cross the finish line Sunday I’ll be happy, Gucci shoes or not!’”
