A junior defensive back at Western Carolina has died after participating in a voluntary offseason workout.

Western Carolina spokesman Daniel Hooker says Ja'Quayvin Smalls collapsed Wednesday and was pronounced dead about 7:30 p.m. at Harris Regional Hospital in Sylva.

The school says he collapsed while running during an evening workout session. Observers said Smalls had complained of cramps at the beginning of sprint exercises and had been removed from the lineup to stretch.

After taking its fight to change the Bowl Championships Series to Congress, the Mountain West Conference is reluctantly agreeing to a BCS television deal.

The MWC still doesn't receive an automatic berth to a BCS game, but needed to sign the agreement with ESPN so the league's nine schools would still be eligible to play in one of the top-tier bowls.

Utah Sen. Orrin Hatch is calling on the Justice Department to investigate college football's Bowl Championship Series for what he views as violations of antitrust laws.

The top Republican on the Senate subcommittee with antitrust oversight, Hatch made the comment Tuesday after conducting a hearing. He said that it is clear to him whether the BCS is in violation of antitrust laws.

Under the Bowl Championship Series, some conferences get automatic bids to participate while others don't.

South Carolina has reported 14 NCAA secondary violations from the past six months, including one for an improper text message to a recruit and another for "impermissible snacks."

Five of the violations were from the first-year program of men's basketball coach Darrin Horn.

The school's athletic department released the violations this week. It discloses secondary violations twice a year because of open records requests made by The Associated Press and other media outlets.
