This episode of Girl Germs is a bittersweet one. Not only are we bidding adieu to the year 2011 (which was a pretty good one music-wise, no?)—Anna and Dana are signing off for a while. The Girl Germs podcast will be going on hiatus this winter but, before it does, we wanted to put together this mix for you of some of our favorite songs by lady artists from the year. Enjoy it while you ring in 2012, and make sure to check the blog in the coming months as we’ll still be posting content there. Being that it’s almost Christmas, Anna and Dana have decided to get into the spirit in a sort of unique way—by celebrating female artists who use spirituality in their music. While it’s fair to say that religion (Christianity specifically) historically has been a patriarchal endeavor, we’re looking at women who’ve made groundbreaking music with religion at their sides and in their subject matter. Several of these artists have used religious and spiritual music to assert their artistic integrity and to break boundaries; they’ve been musical vanguards and truly inspiring ladies who set the stage for female artists to come. Girl Germs Episode 20 – Girl Jerks

On today’s episode of Girl Germs we’re talking about some famous music rivalries. The impetus for this show was a Mojo magazine interview with Joni Mitchell a few years ago. In it, Mitchell discussed some of the rivalries between female musicians in the 1960s and ‘70s, describing how rather than supporting each other, artists like Joan Baez and Janis Joplin feuded and competed with each other. The Guardian published its take on the phenomenon, pointing out that musician feuds, like many things in the industry, are often divided along gender lines.

Whatever your take on these feuds (is it sexist for female artists to feud with each other, or is it sexist to assume that all female musicians should get along and support each other simply because they are all women?), we hope you enjoy this episode, in which we run down some famous rivalries in the ‘90s alt-rock, modern indie-rock and ‘80s hip-hop scenes.

Girl Germs Episode 18 – Ladies’ Weekend

This week Anna and Dana are previewing the many lady-centric events happening in the Twin Cities this weekend. Yeti Records is hosting their second Girl a Whirl Saturday, Nov. 5 with performances from local musicians. Also on Saturday Lori Lobenstine, the author of Girls Got Kicks, will join Desdamona, Maria Isa and Tish Jones at Fifth Element for a book-release party (read our interview with Lobenstine here). Fancy Pants Gangsters will be on hand all weekend at Minneapolis Indie Xpo, a celebration of independent comic artists and zine makers (come and say hi!), and both the North Star and Minnesota Roller Girls have bouts coming up. Later in the show, Kat from Grease Rag Ride & Wrench, a local organization that advocates for women, trans and femme cyclists, joins us to talk about Grease Rag’s winter skill share (during which you can get tips on winter cycling, meet other lady bikers and learn bike-maintenance tips) on Sunday, Nov. 6.

Have you heard? Girl Germs is sponsoring Twin Cities Zinefest, a celebration of all things handmade and DIY, this Saturday, Sept. 24. Along with dozens of artists, graphic novelists and writers, we’ll be on hand at the Powderhorn Park building in Minneapolis spreading the Girl Germs gospel and handing out swag (like some gorgeous buttons we made!). On this week’s episode, Anna and Dana chat with Lacey Prpic-Hedtke, a librarian, artist and zinester who is the organizer of this year’s Zinefest. Inspired by all the press coverage of the impending 20th anniversary of Nirvana’s Nevermind album, Dana and Anna have been doing some reminiscing. So this week we decided to dedicate an entire show to one of our favorite musical decades: the ‘90s.

Women like Kat Bjelland, Kim Deal and Mary Timony broke new ground at a pivotal time in music history, and many of them—however underappreciated—remain just as relevant today. Twenty years later, male artists like Kurt Cobain and Eddie Vedder (who we agree are highly influential and talented in their own rights) continue to get much of the credit for the musical paradigm-shifting that marked the ‘90s. This podcast is our tribute to the ladies who helped spark that cultural revolution—from the riot grrrl movement of the Pacific Northwest (Heavens to Betsy, Bikini Kill) to the trip-hop of Bristol (Portishead) to NYC jazz fusion-hip hop (Cibo Matto) to trailblazing guitar heroes (Babes in Toyland, Throwing Muses).
