Without the $787 billion government stimulus package, he estimated job losses would have continued into the second half of the year and peaked at about 12 percent.

"That would take what is now a severe recession and actually turn it into a deep depression," he said. "We think the fiscal stimulus package is vital in turning around attitudes toward the economy."

He said we are at or near a stock market bottom and stock prices should soon stabilize.

That certainly wasn't the case so far this week. The Dow Jones industrial average gained 498 points on Monday but dropped 115 points, or 1.5 percent, on Tuesday.

Home sales will turn around by midyear and home prices will begin recovering by the end of this year after bottoming out at 35 percent of their value from peak to trough. Home prices won't return to their values of a few years ago during the boom, but will recover from current lows, he said.

Banks will likely begin seeing improvement in capital as the government program to remove bad assets kicks in and the Federal Reserve provides more economic support. Faucher predicted major bank and financial services company failures will abate in the second half of this year and credit will begin to move again.

Those improvements and additional government spending will provide investors some opportunities in companies that own bridges, toll roads and utilities. It also will drive growth in areas of green energy production.

The stimulus package will spend $50 billion on roads, bridges, utilities and other infrastructure, said Craig Noble, portfolio manager, for Brookfield Redding LLC, a Chicago-based investment manager of global real estate and infrastructure securities.

He sees a potential sweet spot for investors in companies that own the assets that will benefit from the needed spending. He said the stimulus package is only a small portion of government spending on transportation and utilities. Congress must reauthorize this year a multiyear transportation bill that provides hundreds of billions of dollars in spending and sets priorities for the next five years or more.

"The infrastructure class currently offers a unique and compelling investment case with trillions needed to be spend across the globe in coming years," he said.

Stimulus packages rolled out in Canada, Europe, Australia, South America and China show the global nature of the infrastructure asset class, he said.

Obama administration polices that emphasize renewable energy such as wind power will also push billions of dollars into building electricity-carrying power lines and the towers to hold them. That construction is needed to carry wind power from expanding wind turbine farms in the Midwest to population centers in the Eastern United States.

Personal Finance Writer David Pitt reported from Des Moines, Iowa.

-Rob

I'm always interested in your feedback. He FAR EXCEEDED my expectations with his story and I'm very proud to share this adventure with you. If you have any questions comments or praise for Phil please post them to this blog and I will forward them onto him.

On behalf of Freedom Power Sports, THANK YOU very much Phil for sharing your story!!

My Victory Vision Adventure

From Freedom Power Sports®, Kennesaw, Georgia
to
Orange County, California
and BEYOND............................
by Philip I. Lewis

Sunday

Here I am, cruising on Highway 20, traveling from Georgia to Alabama on the first leg of my journey. The air is crisp and clear, but there are threatening clouds above. Not to worry, I am wearing leather boots, chaps, gloves, and jacket, all treated with KIWI® mink oil paste (waterproofs and softens leather). Under my leathers, I am wearing electrically heated chaps and vest. It's a little chilly right now. My Victory Vision® computer shows the outside temperature is 50 degrees. So I dial up the rheostat on my electrics and turn on the Vision's electrically heated seat and hand grips. My Vision has an electrical outlet in the left pocket storage compartment. It has great electrical generating capacity easily able to power everything. In that same compartment is my Ipod connection. I load up more than enough music for a cross-county trip and the Vision radio interface lets me select a playlist at the push of a number. There are 12 radio preset buttons and 2-12 can be used to select the play list from the Ipod. I set the cruise control and stretch out, my back against a small duffle bag and just sit back and enjoy the scenery.

As all of us bikers know, the difference between riding and driving is like night and day. I feel as though I can almost reach out and touch the trees along the side of the highway. The Vision is the smoothest and most comfortable bike I've ridden. I've set the cruise control for 70mph (don't want to get a ticket) and am just enjoying the ride.

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_1jcO4DFab4A/SaK-XKe3GmI/AAAAAAAAAEU/KU023ANh404/s200/comfortinn.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5306012616155929186" /><img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_1jcO4DFab4A/SaK-WwzXTxI/AAAAAAAAAEM/K9L3Vj2-HzI/s200/comfortinncoveredbike.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5306012609262604050" />About now, the clouds decide to open up a bit, and the first ping of rain hits my helmet. I can still see some sunshine (it's about 4:00pm, Sunday, in early Spring) amongst the clouds. As the highway glistens with rain, my Vision tracks true and stable. I appreciate the solid feel on a wet road and, as nature will have “Her” way, I was going to see a lot more “wet” on this adventure. As the rain fades away, I am treated to a beautiful sunset with the orange clouds illuminated by the retreating sun. It's about time to find a bed for the night. No reservations. I haven't planned out this trip. It starts from home and ends......... well, you'll see. I do have my Garmin® GPS sitting just above my radio console. Although I don't know what my route will be, the Garmin will show me how to get there ;-). Not too much for “roughing it,” on my first night I am resting comfortably at a Comfort Inn® in Meridian, MS.

Monday

This is supposed to be a lazy adventure so I don't start out to the West again 'til after lunch. (I didn't hit the road, on the first day, 'til after 2:00pm.)

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_1jcO4DFab4A/SaK_SPXfB3I/AAAAAAAAAEk/NIPm1QOSnyU/s200/shellstation.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5306013631079450482" /><img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_1jcO4DFab4A/SaK_R5Ebw9I/AAAAAAAAAEc/WvJNeZQbKLA/s200/raising+canes.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5306013625093964754" />I'm cruising along I-20 again when I look up and see a sign that reads, “This-a-Way” to New Orleans. Well, it only takes me a second and “That-a-Way” I go. The weather had warmed up and so I stop on the side of the road, take off my jacket and vest and ride in my short sleeve shirt . Once again, with the cruise control set and low music tones surrounding me, I lean back against my bag and just enjoy the scenery at about 70mph. I am just enjoying the day and getting ready to cross Lake Pontchartrain, when I decide it's time for a little fuel and food. I stop in a little town called Slidel, Mississippi, and get some Shell® gas for my Vision and some Raising Cane's® chicken fingers for me.

<img style="float:right; The temperature is a little cooler by the water, so I put on my jacket. It's really a neat ride. I haven't ridden the Florida Keys yet, but crossing this lake on the way to New Orleans is quite a sight. The highway (bridge) is just above the water. There is a lot of construction because hurricane Katrina destroyed part of this highway. I'm riding across the water at 4:10pm, temperature 76 degrees, and my cruise control is set for 70mph. That allows my to steer with my left hand and take some pictures. (By the way... very smooth and stable in 6th gear at this speed). I stop in the city, but it is so crowded and hot, I just take off my jacket and head back on the interstate toward Baton Rouge. Cruising away from New Orleans, I have another view of Lake Pontchartrain from the southwest side. I'm on a kind of mysterious looking stretch of road. A divided bridge highway with an ominous sky overhead. The sky is getting darker as I continue to ride west. In my rear view mirror, I spot a Gold Wing coming up behind me. He catches up, we wave, and ride together for awhile 'til he heads off, presumably home (he could be heading off for another 1000 miles.... I'll never know.....). That's just another neat thing about us bikers. A total stranger is like an instant friend..... riding together along the highway. It's a nice feeling, isn't it. Ah, but I digress....

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_1jcO4DFab4A/SaLFAqBGlkI/AAAAAAAAAG8/MOWhhEXuq6M/s200/crossingmspi1.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5306019926065452610" /><img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_1jcO4DFab4A/SaLFAFIs72I/AAAAAAAAAG0/udF32xP7j5Q/s200/crossingmspi6.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5306019916165214050" /><img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_1jcO4DFab4A/SaLE_-5CYyI/AAAAAAAAAGs/eVZRvgSYjU8/s200/crossingmspidash.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5306019914488898338" /><img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_1jcO4DFab4A/SaLE_bQbp9I/AAAAAAAAAGk/dUsbFjtXeXQ/s200/crossingmspibehind.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5306019904923346898" />I stay on I-10 and cross the Mississippi River, near Baton Rouge, at 5:48pm. I decide to try for Houston. As everyone knows, it's darn near impossible to cross the great state of Texas in one day. I gas up and head west on I-10 toward Lafayette, Lake Charles, Beaumont, and Houston. I almost make it to Houston!

Those clouds I've been seeing on most of my ride, start getting thicker. The temperature is 82 degrees at 6:00pm and that means thunderstorms are possible. I know I can ride with some rain (I had no problems in West Georgia), but I figure if I get into thunderstorms, I'll just stop for the night. Well......... all doesn't go as planned. About 50 miles or so east of Houston, the black night sky opens up. I'm in thunder and lightning and heavy rain and strong winds and.......... well you get the picture. I'm looking at my GPS, which I can hardly see because of the rain, and it's not helping. I know Houston is about 50 miles ahead, but that's not helping me right now because...... I WANT A MOTEL!!! and so...... I'm riding in fairly heavy traffic, being careful when I change lanes (lean a little too much and my riding days might be over), looking over the windscreen (I'm sure glad the Vision has an electrically adjustable windscreen) and trying to spot an Oasis. With these riding conditions, I'm just not able to use the GPS to search for the nearest motel. So....... I'm wet and cold (even with the electric clothes, I still feel cold) and hungry and...... WHERE'S MY MOTEL!!!????

Just when I'm really starting to wonder what the heck I'm doin' out here on a night like this, I spot salvation. Actually, what I see are several motels, fast food signs, and gas stations. I see them and the exit just ahead. Lucky me! I'm riding in the right lane, so all I have to do is exit carefully. Easier said then done in these conditions. But I get a little luck, the rain dies down a little and I carefully exit. Now, one more thing a biker has to consider when the ground is slick is trying to keep their feet from slipping when they stop. I'm not very tall (5'6”), so I have to balance somewhat carefully. Fortunately, the Vision has a fairly low seat height (26.5 inches). My leg inseam is 25.5 inches. So, with a little stretch, I'm able to stop and balance with no problem. But should I lean a little too much after stopping on this slick asphalt, my foot could slip and down I go. I probably won't hurt my Vision because it's designed to lay down on it's side supports and not get damaged, but, I might get run over at the red light. At the very least, it would be embarrassing. But all is well as I come to a stop at the end of the exit ramp. Being careful not lean much on my turns, I make it to the nearest motel, except.......... they're full up. But they're very nice and call another motel, just up the street, and my bed awaits. It's been a long night and I'm glad for a warm dry room.

That night, I call my friend in California, one reason for this long trip, and he asks where I am. After telling him about my adventure so far, he asks will I make it in time for his racing. He races Porsches. I tell him, “No Problema! I'll just get up earlier and ride farther.” After I hang up, I decide I'll have to make it to El Paso by tomorrow night.

Tuesday

It's a gorgeous morning. After my free continental breakfast, I'm packed up and ready to hit the dusty trail....... would you believe the freshly rain washed interstate highway.

It's an uneventful beautiful ride as I proceed to San Antonio. I've been getting about 40mpg, give or take a little. The Vision computer seems right on as I check my mileage against how many gallons I have to add. There are some clouds and wind around San Antonio and a little rain. Nothing like Houston. I take the perimeter road around San Antonio as shown by my Garmin. I've been using the Garmin to check for nearest towns so I can plan my refueling. Looking at my gauge and my GPS, I plan to stop at Roosevelt, Texas. It's getting warm, so off comes the jacket and, once again, I'm riding in my short sleeve shirt (my arms are getting a little sunburned. I forgot about needing sunscreen. Oh well I'll just get some at the next stop.) I'm heading northwest on I-10 and the ground elevation is slowly rising, the air temperature is getting pretty warm, and my fuel level seems to be going down more rapidly than I had planned. The speed limit on this stretch of highway is 80mph. Everyone around me seems to be going about 90mph. I speed up as I'm anxious to fuel up and get a cold drink and a snack. I'm about 25 miles from Roosevelt when, to my surprise, a gas station appears and disappears very quickly off my right side. Not very well marked. I think about trying to turn around, but I don't see any turn offs. I'm on a pretty desolate stretch of interstate. I decide to stick to my original plan and continue on to Roosevelt. My gas gauge is a couple of needle widths out of the red, so I know I'm not going to have any problems. WRONG! I arrive at a sign which reads Roosevelt, this exit and........... there's nothing there. No sign for gas this way or that way or any way....... just an offramp!! I know there has to be a town somewhere near here, but where? Well, my gas gauge is on the red. I read in the manual that there is a gallon of reserve gas, but where does that gallon start? Does it start on the red or when the low fuel light comes on? I know this isn't the time to be getting off the highway and searching up and down a deserted road for a gas station. So, do I go forward to

Sonora or do I turn around? I make a quick decision to continue to Sonora. I do have one ace in the hole. I am carrying, in my left saddle case, 1 liter of gas in an approved plastic-type fuel cell. When I decided to pack it, I guessed that it would be good for about 10 emergency miles. Why I didn't carry an extra 2 gallons, I'll never know. I guess the liter bottle seemed like a nice small size to carry. Of course, I had never run the Vision out of gas before, so I don't know how easy it will be to start if I do run it out. (Just a note, I have subsequently tested the fuel system by purposely running it dry, with a spare 2gal container in my saddle case. It started up very quickly when I added my spare gas after running it dry.) So, I'm now hoping that I have maybe a gallon left. I know that at 90mph, burning gas like crazy, I'll never make it. So, here's what I do. The GPS says it's a little over 40 miles to Sonora. I need to drive so as to get at least 40mpg or more. I slow down to about 50mph and put the bike in 6th gear. The terrain seems to be slightly downhill from here, so I'm able to keep the engine speed down to about 1500rpm and the computer is showing about 50mpg most of the time. Sometimes the road makes a short climb (it was one of those dipping type roads with ups and downs) and I have to downshift to make it over the top. I cringe as my “instant-fuel-flow” goes down to 30mpg. Sometimes, I pull in the clutch and let it coast and I see my fuel go up to over 80mpg. The computer shows the air temperature at 90 degrees. I'm hot and sweaty and my arms are turning lobster red. I can feel the sunburn. (So much for the short ride to get some sunscreen.) Of course all of those cars I passed sometime ago, are zipping by at 80+mph. I keep looking at my GPS to see how far I have to go. (Oh, I forgot to mention. I quickly learned that knowing where the next town is, is not the best way to use the GPS. I should have thought of it before now, but....... anyway, now I'm using the GPS to find the nearest gas station. It's showing a Chevron® station straight ahead.) I keep checking my GPS as it's counting down. I'm just hoping that I don't run dry with over 10 miles to go. I figure my spare liter will get me there after that. Along I go, watching the miles slowly wind down. 35 to go..... 30 to go....... 25 to go........ With each mile I'm breathing a little bit easier. I finally get to 10 miles to go and now I feel like I've got a really good chance. But I really don't want to run it dry. I keep driving slowly in 6th gear and.......... there it is........ Shangri-La!! (would you believe Sonora!?) I take the offramp and, in front of me, is the Chevron station, across the intersection. There is one small problem.... there is a very large, double-wide mobile home being pulled along the street in front of the station at a speed that, appears to me, to be about 10ft an hour! I tell my bike, “Please don't run dry in front of the station.” I can just see myself pushing it up to the pump for the last 50ft. Well, they slowly move “the whale” out of my way and I ride to the pump. Believe me, that last 50 miles lasted a lifetime.

After trying to relax for a couple of minutes, it's time to see just how much gas I have left in the tank. On the Vision, you have to keep filling the tank after the auto-shutoff because the gas has to flow to the other side of the tank. It's a split tank on both sides of the fork. Well, I keep filling and filling and........... when I am done the pump reads 6.06 gallons. Now, according to the specifications manual, the Vision only holds 6 gallons, but I did fill it all the way up to the cap. I must have been running on proverbial fumes! (Here's another note. Long after I made this cross-country trip, when I did my test and ran it dry, I added the 2 gallons I was carrying and then took it immediately to gas station. It took another 4.06 gallons. What d'ya think?)

Gassed up, a cold drink, a turkey and cheese sandwich (kinda' like cardboard) later and I'm off again. I still have a long way to go and I wasted a lot of time traveling at 50mph for the last hour, so I'm back up to 90mph on my quest to make it to El Paso. The rest of today is fairly uneventful except..... I stop for gas and put my helmet on my seat and the wind is blowing pretty hard and..... Well, the helmet rolls off the seat, hits the ground and the visor clip breaks on my Nolan® helmet. This is a removable plastic clip that holds the visor on. I have a smoke visor and a clear visor. I usually use the smoke visor 'til sunset and then switch to the clear visor. Now I have no visor. I wear prescription glasses and I
thought that would work but, the wind was blowing pretty hard with a lot of sand and dirt.

After a few feet of riding I know this isn't gonna work. I'm getting a lot of junk in my eyes. But..... I have an idea for a quick fix. I should have thought of this before, but it's been a long day. I can use some black plastic electricians tape (I try to carry some emergency items) to tape the visor on. It works! I can't flip the visor up anymore, but “what the heck!” It's getting fairly late, so I tape the clear visor on. Unfortunately, the sun hasn't quite set yet, so I'm squinting for the next half hour. It feels so good when the sun finally goes down.

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_1jcO4DFab4A/SaLGWf494QI/AAAAAAAAAHE/UbFgJrRqmRU/s200/juareznight.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5306021400815722754" />On I go toward El Paso and it's getting late. It's almost 10:00pm and I really think about quitting early but I only have about 60 miles to ride. I'm not into stretching my gas anymore. I see another Chevron station just up ahead on the left. A quick refill and then I head on down the road. The bed feels really good tonight! (I take a night picture of Juarez, Mexico, looking across the border from the balcony of The Comfort Inn in El Paso, to document the end of this long day.)

Wednesday

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_1jcO4DFab4A/SaLGsliXdAI/AAAAAAAAAHM/xerdZPIZswM/s200/juarezday.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5306021780288664578" />It's a beautiful morning! I've a long way to go, so I get up at 6:00 o'clock this morning. There's not a cloud visible in the clear blue morning sky.

After breakfast, I suit up in my leathers and electrics as it's still pretty cool this morning. I know the desert will be warming up this afternoon, but I find that the leather chaps keep my legs cooler as they insulate them from the engine heat.

Just outside the city of El Paso, I at first, smell and then see, more cows than I've ever seen before! I've heard of “hamburger-on-the-hoof,” but I've never seen “so many” walking hamburgers (a lot them are just lying around!). It seems like miles are going by as I'm smelling and seeing cattle farm after cattle farm. These are farms with no grass, just a lot of dark dirt with the cattle sprawled all around. To tell the truth, it almost makes me feel like becoming a vegetarian. ;-)

As I ride on and on and on today, there is none of the excitement of my previous days. Just beautiful weather and beautiful scenery. It's basically just different types of desert, but I love it. In a car, the outside seems boring. On the bike, I feel like part of the scenery. Some Joshua trees in some parts and pure nothingness in others. I stop for gas every 3 hours or so, grabbed a quick sandwich and water, and keep going towards my destination in Mission Viejo, California.

As the sun begins to set, approaching the hills separating the Imperial Valley of California from San Diego, I stop to change visors (more electrical tape) and put on my heated vest and leather jacket. I'm glad I have the heated vest because it's getting much colder than I expected it would be for California. My computer is showing in the 40 degree range as I cross the hills.

It's a beautiful sight as I descend down the other side of the mountains. The sun is setting over the Pacific Ocean with a foreground of the many sparkling lights of San Diego. As I join up with Interstate 5, also known as the San Diego Freeway, (from I-8) on this Wednesday evening, I am welcomed by the famous, or should I say infamous, California traffic. From San Diego to Los Angeles, I think there are more cars in these square miles than would seem possible (and they “All” seem to be on this freeway, right now.)

I didn't mention I used to live in San Diego and Orange County, California and spent years riding different motorcycles around here. I haven't been back for several years and I feel a nostalgic wave wash over me as I ride north toward Mission Viejo and the end of My Journey.................. WELL ALMOST!

BEYOND

<img style="float:left; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_1jcO4DFab4A/SaLHlZzMxdI/AAAAAAAAAHU/DGgmGCAZRIk/s200/autoclubracewaysign.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5306022756390585810" />This is the most exciting fun part of this ride. Taking my Victory Vision on the racetrack at the California Motor Speedway near Ontario, California. It's actually now called The Auto Club Speedway. The name changed since I moved away from California.

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_1jcO4DFab4A/SaLIBxYGoYI/AAAAAAAAAH8/MJYciHrmuW8/s200/raceway5.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5306023243755725186" /><img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_1jcO4DFab4A/SaLIBwEorEI/AAAAAAAAAH0/QPf_rWrWGqs/s200/raceway4.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5306023243405634626" /><img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_1jcO4DFab4A/SaLIBq22V6I/AAAAAAAAAHs/2hZiXtvvI04/s200/raceway3.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5306023242005632930" /><img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_1jcO4DFab4A/SaLIA-8lBVI/AAAAAAAAAHk/B4zbGqTMVJk/s200/raceway2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5306023230218503506" /><img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_1jcO4DFab4A/SaLIAVCqdYI/AAAAAAAAAHc/LCF3sBRZp1k/s200/raceway1.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5306023218969736578" /><img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_1jcO4DFab4A/SaLIZ7XhlQI/AAAAAAAAAIU/V0HSpDWz8ds/s200/raceway8.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5306023658754512130" /><img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_1jcO4DFab4A/SaLIZZj47LI/AAAAAAAAAIM/LdyKWkx8P7Y/s200/raceway7.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5306023649679568050" /><img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_1jcO4DFab4A/SaLIYgosfPI/AAAAAAAAAIE/GTRRCyO-kwY/s200/raceway6.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5306023634398903538" />My friend is a member of the PCA, Porsche Club of America. I'm here as his guest. During lunch hour, on this Friday, everyone is invited to cruise the race course in their cars (for a small fee). To the best of my knowledge, no one has ridden a motorcycle on this track with the PCA. I know that no one has ever ridden a Victory Vision here. With a promise to not do anything “crazy” I'm given permission to ride with pack. The “lunch-lap” as it's called, is supposed to be a leisurely ride at 55mph around the track. But, this Friday is different. The real experienced racers are taking their friends in their Porches and........... the race is on. No one is allowed to pass, but we are exceeding 100mph on the “straight-a-ways” and as fast as you can go on the turns. The usual oval track has been turned into a road race track with orange cones set up on the infield roads to create and define the many tight turns.

As you might know, the Victory Vision was not really designed for this type of riding, but it's doing great! The track is hot and the tires are sticking well. I'm leaning over on the turns at such fast speeds that I'm scraping, first one side and then the other. I feel like a professional motorcycle racer. (well..... almost! ;-) Fortunately, the Vision is designed so that the foot boards hit first and this tells me when to back off. The acceleration is good, but I must admit I'm at the high end of the rpm range on my accelerations At one point, I hit the “limiter” as I accelerate out of a tight right turn in 2nd gear with a leaning scrape. I'm not exactly a young kid (I'm 58), but I have to tell you I feel like a kid again racing around THE SPEEDWAY on my Victory Vision.

What a great way to end a great ride!!

This is a true story.

Thanks again Phil for a truly amazing adventure!!

-Rob

I'm always interested in your feedback. I looked around on the internet for a few different suggestions but didn't find very much so I just left out Sunday morning with no particular place to go. All that I knew was that I eventually needed to end up back in the Atlanta area by the end of the day. So, I started heading south on Hwy 5. The temperature gauge on the bike read 31 degrees. I was very thankful for the heated grips and seat!! I downloaded a few pod casts to my iPod before I left and plugged it into the input jack on the Vision. I've become obsessed with pod casts and being able to do that on the Vision is a great treat.

So, as far as the trip. I headed south to Elijay and stopped at a great Mexican restaurant (in front of the Wal-Mart) and enjoyed their buffet. Then I headed east on 108 at went up to Burnt Mountain. 108 was a great road without a lot of potholes or tar patches and barely any traffic. From there I made my way back toward Hwy 5 and found that Whitestone rd ran parallel to Hwy 5 and took that South for a while. It was a great road as well and eventually ran me into Hwy 136 which runs you through downtown Jasper. It eventually turns into refuge rd and dumps you back onto Hwy 5 just north of Ball Ground. From there I just took Hwy 5 back to Atlanta and called it a day. The warmest it got was 44 degrees once I got out of the mountains and back toward Woodstock. I was happy with how good the Vision protects you from the wind. The electric windshield is great! You can move it all the way up and feel virtually no wind or move it down to get a great blast which I'm sure is great for summer time!! I couldn't have asked for a better day or a better bike. It was a great ride.

If you're ever up that way I highly recommend this quick detour off of hwy 5. If you're heading north you want to look for refuge road and go east for about 100 yard and then head north on S. Main st which will run you through downtown Jasper. Main st will eventually turn into Talking Rock Rd and you can hop back on hwy 5 by going west on Philadelphia road. It's just a quick little detour so that you can see some of the scenery that you wouldn't normally be able to see from Hwy 5.

-Rob

I'm always interested in your feedback.
