Dan Rather: Most Journalists Aren't Liberal - 'This Is a Sham' By Noel Sheppard Created 05/31/2012 - 1:17am Dan Rather told Jon Stewart Wednesday evening that most journalists aren't liberal. Although one would think the disgraced former CBS Evening News anchor fired for presenting forged documents about President George W. Bush months before the 2004 elections was kidding given the venue being Comedy Central's Daily Show, Rather was actually serious (video follows with transcript and commentary): JON STEWART, HOST: This idea of liberal bias and the idea, you know, in your experience, haven't most journalists, haven't their politics been somewhat...

Voter ID amendment question challenged by ACLU

The American Civil Liberties Union has asked the Minnesota Supreme Court to keep off the Nov. 6 ballot a proposed constitutional amendment that would require voters to show a photo ID. The ACLU petition, filed Wednesday, May 30, argues that the ballot question is misleading and fails to inform voters of changes in election law that could undermine their right to vote. "The question is misleading and false," said Charles Samuelson, ACLU Minnesota's executive director. The question asks voters whether the state constitution should be amended to "require all voters to present valid photo identification to vote."

Wisconsin unions see ranks drop ahead of recall vote

Public-employee unions in Wisconsin have experienced a dramatic drop in membership -- by more than half for the second-biggest union -- since a law championed by Republican Gov. Scott Walker sharply curtailed their ability to bargain over wages and working conditions. Now with Mr. Walker facing a recall vote Tuesday, voters will decide whether his policies in the centrist state should continue -- or whether they have gone too far. The election could mark a pivot point for organized labor. Mr. Walker's ouster would derail the political career of a rising Republican star and send a warning to other elected...

Developing. Analysts expect to see 370K weekly claims. That would exactly be in line with last week's 370K. The number is one of the best high-frequency predictors of the economy and the market, so this is big. If this stays tame, it will do a lot to assure that things aren't deteriorating too badly. UPDATE: The number is 383K, a miss from an upwardly revised.

"Fox & Friends" aired a nearly-four-minute video about President Barack Obama on Wednesday, drawing the ire of critics who say it looked, felt and sounded like a political attack ad. "We decided to take a look back at the president's first term to see if it lived up to hope and change," co-host Gretchen Carlson said while introducing the video. The video, produced by Fox News associate producer Chris White, attacks Obama's record on job creation and the unemployment rate--and includes a dramatic, "Star Wars"-esque soundtrack. It aired twice on Wednesday's show.

The leader of the government regularly sits down with his senior generals and spies and advisers and reviews a list of the people they want him to authorize their agents to kill. They do this every Tuesday morning when the leader is in town. The leader once condemned any practice even close to this, but now relishes the killing because he has convinced himself that it is a sane and sterile way to keep his country safe and himself in power. The leader, who is running for re-election, even invited his campaign manager to join the group that decides whom...

The ground-breaking Senate candidate is Ted Cruz, who, last night, forced Texas Lieutenant Governor David Dewhurst into a runoff.
Obama Campaign May Be Fooling Itself

"Axelrod is endeavoring not to panic." So reads a sentence in John Heilemann's exhaustive article on Barack Obama's campaign in this week's New York magazine. Heilemann is a fine reporter and was co-author with Time's Mark Halperin of a best-selling book on the 2008 presidential campaign. While his sympathies are undoubtedly with Obama, he does a fine job of summarizing the arguments and tactics of both sides. And he's capable of directing snark at both candidates.
How ironic it will be if Catholic voters, about 27% of the electorate, put the first Mormon in the White House some 50 years after John F. Kennedy became the first Catholic president. More telling, though, about the current state of the American mind will be the fact that after more than a thousand days and events in Barack Obama's presidency, the reason for this result will be an unexpected reaffirmation of an American principle older than the country's first presidential election: the free exercise of religion.
