La solution retenue a été le CMS Drupal, dans sa version 6. Une partie Marché permet aux coopérateurs de réaliser leurs commandes pour les marchés mensuels organisés sur le site de la COOP. Cette fonctionnalité a été développée à partir du module Ubercart. Afin de répondre à une demande et de disposer de récapitulatifs de commandes pour chaque marché, il a en outre été nécessaire de développer un module spécifique.

Now, don’t get me wrong, this was a long time coming, as Youtube was never known for the sleekness of its UI (unlike a service such as Vimeo, for instance). In fact, the website was for along time just short of hideous. It improved recently when the video pages were revamped (but not the channel pages, which was unfortunate), but if felt like a slapped-on job.

And after this new and -more complete redesign- it still feels a bit like a slapped-on job. The light-grey background , with its noisy pattern, has a deadening effet, especially as there are not enough touches of color to counterbalance it : everything is grey, except for the « promoted » (e.g. paying) videos. The links are a strandard blue that doesn’t integrate very well with the overall feel. The playlist functionality wasn’t updated (it is pretty useful in my opinion) and neither was the video carousel.

The subscription page suffers from the same problems : gloomy grey and black, not enough colors. However, it is very usable and you can easily browse your channels, add subscriptions and go explore unknow territories.

This is a short review, but this redesign feels a bit superficial and incomplete. It is disappointing after the successful revamping of the other Google services, but Youtube is a work in progress and you can’t deny that it looks a lot more professional than at its beginning.

This hesitation stems from a simple, but inescapable fact: the HTML specification is not final yet, which means that browser support of its features is both incomplete and heterogeneous. You can check for yourself how your browser fares in this department, as for me the latest version of Chrome tests 328 out of 450. You could say that, all things considered, this is a good score. However, when I browse the details of the ratings I can’t help but notice that a lot of the features that actually are a selling point are not supported : video functionnality and forms elements, for example. All this tends to make me hold back a bit more before putting HTML5 designs out there.

However, there is one area where HTML5 already shines, and that’s mobile platforms, thanks CSS3′s media queries. It allows developper to bypass the app creation process and deliver content directly to users with a minimum of hassle. The only hurdle left to clear, so far as I see, is a satisfiying payment process for those who want to monetize access to their content. What’s more, the Drupal community already offers great resources such as HTML5 Tools and the Omega Theme. 

That is why, while I am still wary of implementing HTML5 on production websites, I know that in some case it is becoming a viable choice, for exemple if your target audience is composed of rather tech-savvy users with up-to-date browsers or devices. This audience can only grow, but when you know that almost 12 years after its introduction Internet Explorer 6 still constitutes an non-negligeable part of the overall browser usage (so much so that even Microsoft has launched an initiative to put it out of its misery), you can only wonder how long it will take before HTML5 support is wide enough to leave good old (X)HTML behind. Finalizing the specification would be a good way to start.

What may be Daft Punk’s best known album, the 2001 sophomore Discovery, is also the source of a great misunderstading. Featuring gorgeous dance/disco tracks such as the one above, and coupled with the brillant Interstella 5555: The 5tory of the 5ecret 5tar 5ystem, a movie by anime legend Leiji Matsumoto, whose soundtrack consisted solely of songs from the album, it captured the imagination of a whole generation of electronic music fans and beyond. It is, notably, the inspiration of The Daft Hands, one of the earliest -and perhaps my all-time favorite- Internet memes.

However, when Daft Punk released their next original studio album Human After All in 2005 it was met with such disbelief that fans first believed it was a fake album created in order to divert pirates from the genuine article. It’s true that if you compare Harder Better Faster Stronger with the track above the discrepancy between the two seems enormous:

(by the way, the music video was the basis for the 2006 movie Electroma, which I think was an important inspiration forDrive. Maybe we’ll come back to this subject another time). However, Human After All is more of a return to Daft Punk’s « big beat » roots, displayed in their 1997 first album,Homework. Some will remember this great track (with a video worthy of a Coppola movie!):

True, Homework had a more House/Dance feel than Human After All, with very upbeat rythm and a lush production, but basically both albums feature utterly danceable club music, drawing their roots into raw techno music with their urban/technologic inspiration, whereas Discovery was almost a pop effort and had a more dreamlike quality. In that, it is something of an anomaly in Daft Punk’s discography, but for all that it remains a classic and a must-listen for any music fan. For the road, a live version of the track during their amazing Alive 2007 concert in Paris, which showed how the Human After All material constitutes a great remix basis.

However, at first I encountered a small but nagging issue with my site: the images were taking a long time to load and sometimes didn’t appear at all. After browsing on the site a bit they all displayed correctly, but if I reloaded a page half the images disappeared. This was especially a problem with the mosaic that is displaying random examples of my work just above the footer. This was not a critical issue, nonetheless it became frustrating as it was affecting the overall layout and created a pretty wonky effect.

So, I began to research this issue, which took me long, frustrating hours. But a combination of googling and Firebugfiddling gave me the solution. I noticed that the images paths started with www.oeilgauche.com/[language prefix]/sites/all… which doesn’t exist on the server, instead of www.oeilgauche.com/sites/all… which actually points to a valid directory. As a result, the server took too long to locate the images and I even wonder whether it was actually generating images anew for each request. So, it was a question of compatibility between ImageCache and theInternationalization module (i18n for short), which is a cornerstone of any multilanguage Drupal installation.

That’s when I took advantage of the great support system that is benefit of the Drupal community. I posted an issue on Drupal.org and in no time user sandrewj came up with the solution: I had to use the dev version of the module, which corrected the path problem. It was only a matter of minutes and I upgraded the module, resolving the problem.

The upshot : as of October 2011, the 6.x-2.0-beta12 version of ImageCache is not fully compatible with i18n. You have to upgrade to the 6.x-2.x-dev version.
