5 good reasons to learn to ski in spring!

1. The weather: heat on the slopes

It's always easier to learn to ski when the weather's nice and mild! With the mercury rising in March and the sun wrapping its warmth around us in spring, it's great fun to learn to ski, without having to worry about the weather. Technical, breathable clothing (the ideal combo: thermal top and shorts + fleece + waterproof jacket and pants) is the key to freer gliding and longer time on the slopes!

2. Snow: soft thanks to spring sunshine

In spring, the mountain ranges enjoy beautiful snow heights and optimal opening of the slopes. Perfectly groomed playgrounds for all types of skiers, from the most challenging runs to beginners' areas. Warmed by the sun's rays during the day, the snow is soft enough to cushion a poorly negotiated turn or loss of balance. Go for it without fear: a soft cushion will welcome your buttocks if your stop is not yet under control!

3. The sun: to fill up on vitamins

What better way to combine learning and tanning? Skiing in spring is the only way to learn the basics of snowploughing under azure skies and tint your smiling face pink. The sun's rays guarantee a considerable supply of vitamin D, which is excellent for bone and skeletal health, as well as protecting the immune system. But don't forget this season's must-have accessories: sun cream before hitting the slopes and sunglasses (or goggles) with a sun protection factor suited to the mountain sun.

4. Calm: more fluidity on the slopes

When you start skiing, you're often afraid of yourself (because you lack control), but also of other skiers who brush past you or hurtle down the slopes. Unlike the Christmas and February vacations, when the greatest concentration of skiers is on the slopes all day, spring is a time when ski areas enjoy a more fluid flow. Fewer people on the slopes means greater safety for beginners, but also less waiting at the lifts. A season when learning to ski goes hand in hand with relaxation!

5. Printemps des Montagnes: learning at low prices

Spring is the perfect time to take lessons without breaking the bank. Resorts and the French Ski School are offering reduced rates for adults, free lessons for children and a host of great deals on learning to ski.

A feast for the eyes

Staying in the mountains means getting up close and personal to the exceptional scenery our mountains have to offer. But if you don't ski to the top of the resort to see this breathtaking panorama, don't panic! Resorts often offer pedestrian-accessible viewpoints or “pas dans le vide” (steps in the void), which guarantee you'll get an eyeful.

For example, the Belvédère des Écrins in Les 2 Alpes is accessible from the glacier funicular station. At an altitude of over 3,400 metres, you can enjoy a majestic view from a platform high above the void.

In the Pyrenees, the renowned Pic du Midi can be reached from the Grand Tourmalet station. Once at the top, the “Ponton dans le Ciel” awaits you for a panoramic view at an altitude of over 2,800 metres, with 1,000 metres of void beneath your feet.

Why not contemplate this panorama with a hot drink or a typical mountain dish? There are many panoramic restaurants in the resort, with terraces or dining rooms overlooking the peaks. A winning combo! Enjoy a 360° view at the Le Signal 2108 restaurant in Alpe d'Huez, for example, which offers an exceptional vantage point over the Alpine massifs.

Finally, check with your resort's tourist office: a torchlight descent may be organized during your stay! It's the perfect opportunity for young and old to marvel at the lights streaming down the slopes. A real feast for the eyes.

Relax in the fresh mountain air

Whether it's for a weekend or a week's vacation, the aim is also to relax. And for that, there's no shortage of gentle activities! Why not try your hand at snow yoga? Introductory courses are available, as in Vaujany, where for just €10 you can relax while practicing an unusual mountain activity.

For a more traditional activity, put on your snowshoes and take to the snow-covered trails amid the immense fir trees, whose calm and beauty are sure to relax you. There are routes of varying degrees of difficulty, so you can go from a walk that's 100% relaxation and contemplation, to a more challenging outing. Even children can join in the fun, with rental stores offering snowshoes for all sizes!

Last but not least, if you're feeling the cold, you can enjoy a 100% relaxing time in one of the spas or thermal baths. At Mont Dore, for example, in the Massif Central, you'll find saunas, hammams and other pools, with a direct view of the Auvergne mountains!

Experience adrenalin and thrills in a different way

If you're still in the mood for a little thrill, whether strong or not, you can turn to downhill activities such as tobogganing on rails or zip-lining. For miles on end, you'll be hurtling down the slope at full speed, with no risk of taking your shoes off, and all the while enjoying the scenery! At Monts Jura, tobogganing on rails propels you into a 540-degree spin, giving you a whole new perspective on the Jura Mountains...

For a more natural version, why not try a ride with sled dogs? They have an average speed of around 20km/h, but this increases even more on the descents! It's a great way to feel the adrenalin, while sitting in the warmth of your sled.

The mountains are also a whole culture, traditions and way of life in their own right. There are many ways to discover the wonders of these resorts, thanks to the people who live and work there.

If you're a lover of good food (especially cheese, in the mountains), you're bound to find a restaurant specializing in local produce, like Chez Pépé Nicolas in Val Thorens, where you can enjoy the best Savoy specialties in the warmth of the chalet.

If you're more the creative type and like to take home a souvenir, the resorts are also home to passionate artisans who will help you discover their creative or traditional products. Discover Les Poteries de Virginie in Serre-Chevalier, for example, and take home a colorful creation!

Last but not least, if you like cultural visits, mountain museums are not to be outdone, and art is also present in the mountains, in forms not found elsewhere! The Font-Romeu resort in the Pyrenees, for example, has a “Museum without walls”, where you can discover art in the open air, right in the heart of the mountains! In a different vein, the Val d'Arly resorts will soon be offering an art festival (March 3-7, 2024), featuring giant street art frescoes.

As you can see, there's no shortage of activities, and a thousand ways to make the most of your stay in the mountains if you've chosen not to ski. And don't forget to consult your destination's events programme, so you don't miss out on any festive, fun or sporting events that will make your stay in the resort even more enriching!

Les P'tits Flambeaux: the French mountains unite around a fairytale event on Thursday 20 February 2025

On Thursday 20 February 2025, as night falls, the French mountains will once again be joining forces to bring you an exceptional event! During the same evening, all the French Ski Schools (ESF) are joining forces to organise torch-lit descents in French resorts simultaneously, in partnership with the Association Nationale des Maires des Stations de Montagne and Domaines Skiables de France.

Our aim? To raise as much money as possible for charity programmes that enable children who are not fortunate enough to be able to go on holiday to discover our magnificent mountains and their benefits.

Torch-lit descents are a magical event par excellence and a must for any winter holiday in the mountains, and are a delight for young and old alike!

To join in the fun and do something good at the same time, members of the public are invited to buy torches, with all proceeds going to 3 charities: Enfance et Montagne, Génération Montagne and Petits Princes through the ‘Famille Plus, la montagne solidaire’ campaign.

The French mountain community rallies for 3 associations

Children and mountains

Le Syndicat National des Moniteurs du Ski Français (SNMSF) est à l'origine du fonds de dotation Enfance et Montagne. Ce fonds, qui soutient les classes d'éducation et de découverte en montagne, a pour objectif de soutenir et de faire revivre la tradition française des classes de neige et des classes vertes. L'objectif du fonds est d'apporter une aide financière aux établissements scolaires qui souhaitent réaliser des projets éducatifs liés à la montagne, apportant ainsi aux enfants de nombreux bénéfices tels que la découverte d'un nouvel environnement, l'apprentissage de l'autonomie et de la vie en collectivité, la pratique d'activités sportives et culturelles.

A word from Éric Brèche - President of the Syndicat National des Moniteurs du Ski Français :

‘As teachers and ski instructors, we feel it's important to be the driving force behind helping children discover the mountains. Our aim is to give a new impetus to discovery classes in our regions. In three years, thanks to the financial contributions of the SNMSF and those of private donors and partners sympathetic to the aims of Enfance & Montagne, more than €1.5 million has been distributed, enabling us to help finance 1,560 mountain discovery classes, winter and summer, involving more than 39,000 children from all over France. I'm very pleased and proud of the success of Enfance & Montagne and the support this initiative has generated.

At the same time, Enfance & Montagne is supporting Imagine tes Montagnes, a call for projects created in 2021 by a group of 10 organisations, whose mission is to support and develop young people's commitment to protecting the mountains, by offering grants to project leaders.

Génération Montagne

In April 2022, Domaines Skiables de France created the Génération Montagne dedicated fund, whose mission is to lead and finance targeted actions of general interest involving ski areas in the environmental, social and solidarity fields in the French mountain ranges.

The missions and achievements of Génération Montagne :

To open up and strengthen initiatives that enable disadvantaged groups to discover the mountains and downhill skiing.

This year, 30 pupils from Saint-Denis set off to discover the joys of the snow at the Carroz mountain resort in Haute-Savoie. Snow and sunshine were the order of the day on this unique trip, where the children were given the chance to try their hand at skiing. Up there, all the barriers between the urban and mountain worlds were broken down thanks to a shared desire and the involvement of all those involved. The Génération Montagne endowment fund provided financial support to help these two classes realise their project.

Supporting actions to promote solidarity and human values in mountain regions

In the spring of 2022, with the war in Ukraine in full swing, the small village of Roubion, situated at an altitude of 1,340 metres, offered to take in a family of Ukrainian refugees. The Génération Montagne endowment fund supported the training and professional integration of one of them, Viktor Veselov, who had been discharged in his country for health reasons, within the Roubion ski area.

To consolidate Domaines Skiables de France's commitment by speeding up the development of several of its eco-commitments through awareness-raising and actions to protect the environment

‘Zero waste in the mountains by 2030’ is the ambitious goal set by the Mountain Riders association for 2020. To achieve this, the Génération Montagne endowment fund is supporting the initiative and contributing to the awareness-raising and training phase.

Opération Famille Plus, the mountain of solidarity in partnership with Petits Princes

Set up in 1987, the Petits Princes association enables seriously ill children and teenagers to realise their mountain dreams and find extra energy in their fight against illness. The association is supported throughout the year by the Famille Plus resorts and the ANMSM through the ‘Famille Plus, la montagne solidaire’ operation.

The Association Nationale des Maires des Stations de Montagne (ANMSM - National Association of Mayors of Mountain Resorts) has set up the ‘Famille Plus, la montagne solidaire’ operation, in partnership with the Petits Princes Association, to help seriously ill children realise their mountain dreams. Since the inception of this operation, the strong commitment of the resorts and holidaymakers has made it possible to fund a number of children's and teenagers' dreams, as well as welcoming 11 little princes and princesses to the resorts themselves.

The Petits Princes Association, founded in 1987, makes the dreams of seriously ill children and teenagers come true, with 3 main objectives:

Providing extra energy to fight the disease: a child who lives his or her passions and dreams is a child who finds extra energy to face the disease.
Following children throughout their illness: the Petits Princes Association is the only association in France to make several dreams come true for the same sick child if their condition so requires, depending on the progress of their pathology and treatment. The association's volunteers are in regular contact with the children, their families and the medical staff to provide long-term support.
Supporting the whole family: Because the disease turns the whole family upside down, in most cases the parents and siblings live out their dreams alongside the child.

A national event in support of the French mountains

Les P'tits Flambeaux is an event organised by France Montagnes, under the impetus of its three founding members: the Association Nationale des Maires des Stations de Montagne (ANMSM), Domaines Skiables de France (DSF) and the Syndicat National des Moniteurs du Ski Français (SNMSF).

Rock On Snow – December 13 to 15, 2024

Rock On Snow is the must-attend event at the start of the season. It kicks off the winter season with a weekend entirely dedicated to skiing and snowboarding. Over 80 brands will be on hand to let you try out winter's new products for free. There will also be concerts, cinema screenings of athletes' films and a host of free events.

Courchevel

Ski Mountaineering World Cup - December 12-15, 2024

Stage 1 kicks off on Thursday, December 12, with the Olympic-format Individual event on the resort's peaks.
After the rest day, the Sprint event, which will be the very first qualifier for the Cortina 2026 Olympic Games, will take place on Saturday December 14.
The Vertical Race on the official Millet Ski Touring Courchevel course will take place on Sunday, December 15. This event will be open to all, to bring this first stage of the WC to a fitting close.

Le Dévoluy

Snow Volley Open - December 29 to 31, 2024

An emerging sport in France, snow volleyball could be a new discipline at the next Winter Olympics. Dévoluy is keen to be a pioneer, and is organizing this 3x3 tournament with Gap Volley Ball. Friday's tournament is for amateurs, while Saturday and Sunday are for pros.

La Rosière

Safety Shred Days - January 10 to 14, 2025

“The mountain has no brain, use yours!” France's biggest freeride gathering returns to La Rosière for the third year. Presented by Salomon pro rider Victor Daviet, the event offers the general public a chance to learn about mountain risks and rescue, all at an ultra-affordable price.
In a relaxed atmosphere, trainees will be taught how to search for avalanche victims by professionals from ANENA (Agence Nationale pour l'Etude de la Neige et des Avalanches) and big names in snowboarding (Victor De Le Rue, Thomas Delfino, Marion Haerty).

Les 2 Alpes

The Muzelle Lights - January 11, 2025

Every year, the Les 2 Alpes trail association organizes a unique white trail. The event takes place in the snow, on groomed trails, when the ski lifts are closed, and especially at night.
Anyone can take part and enjoy the trail experience! Numerous experts are on board, including Mathieu Blanchard and Yannick Noël, trail 2 Alpes ambassadors. Last year, almost 1,400 people took part... why not you?

Les 7 Laux

La Grande Odyssée VVF - January 21, 2025

The 7 Laux resort will host the 9th stage of the 21st edition of La Grande Odyssée. Come and experience this great adventure in Prapoutel. This year, an exceptional sporting line-up is expected, with over 65 international mushers and their 600 top-level dog-athletes covering almost 400 km and 12,000 m of accumulated ascent, in the superb landscapes of the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region.

Ski mountaineering enthusiasts will have the opportunity to enjoy an exceptional experience on the 2 stages and 3 new courses of this race! Over the course of these exciting days, the most talented athletes will challenge each other on the region's steep slopes, testing their skills and endurance in demanding winter conditions.

La Montée de la Mine - January 2025

The Montée de la Mine will see its format revamped, offering a weekend-long competition pitting civilians and military personnel (from the REG or neighboring RAMs) against each other in a cross-country skiing event on a trail inaugurated in winter 2024, at Les Villages coupled with biathlon-style laser shooting to work the cardio.
The Sando Challenge will also be revamped, offering challenges for all ages and breathtaking panoramas.

Le Collet - Belledonne

La Grande Odyssée des Enfants - January 21, 2025

During the 7 Laux stage of La Grande Odyssée VVF on January 21 at Le Collet, children are transformed into competitive mushers.
L'Odyssée des Enfants is a race entirely dedicated to children. For one day, children will experience the same conditions as the mushers taking part in the official stage at Les 7 Laux. Beyond the media impact of such an event, the Odyssée des Enfants is above all part of an educational process carried out before the race.

La Grande Odyssée VVF - January 23, 2025

Villard de Lans is delighted to welcome the final of the Grande Odyssée VVF for the third year running.
It will bring together more than 65 international mushers and their 600 dogs, in the superb landscapes of the region. Come and cheer on the mushers and their dogs as we celebrate this final together!

European Cups Southern Region - January 28 to February 1, 2025

Orcières Merlette 1850 will host the speed events of the Men's Alpine Skiing European Cup on the splendid “Camile Ricou” FIS-approved downhill run. On the program: two downhill runs and a Super G.

Peisey-Vallandry

Nordic en Fête – February 2025

Nordic en Fête is a not-to-be-missed event of the Peisey-Vallandry winter season, held on the Pont Baudin Nordic site. The event is organized jointly by the Tourist Office, the Peisey Vallandry ESF and the Vanoise National Park.

The idea is to promote Nordic practices - some of which are less well known. The program includes free introductions to cross-country skiing, biathlon, snowshoeing, Nordic walking, ski joëring, dog-sledding, horse-drawn carriage rides and reindeer rides.

Chamonix

La Trace des Grands – March 8 and 9, 2025

Launched in 2021, La Trace des Grands is a ski mountaineering race held on the Grands-Montets site. Three events to choose from, allowing expression of all forms of ski touring.

Tignes

Mountain Shaker – March 8 to 14, 2025

The world's best freestylers meet in Tignes!

It's going to be an ultra-vitamin week, as Tignes knows how to prepare them! The formula is simple and effective: good snow and sunshine, demos and shows galore, concerts and good sound, tricks and style. For this 4th edition, Tignes is spoiling all board culture fans with a night-time Big Air Ski World Cup stage, followed by a Ski Slopestyle World Cup! Two crystal globes will be awarded at the end of the competitions.

Praz-de-Lys Sommand

La Traversée de la Ramaz – date to be confirmed, in 2025

A not-to-be-missed winter event, this popular cross-country ski race is open to all, and is now in its 40th year! Bringing together over 1,000 participants, young and old, with courses ranging from 2.5km to 30km (and an adapted sports event), it's a convivial event rich in emotion!

Le Grand Prix de Serre Chevalier – March 21-23, 2025

The flagship winter event with 100% Serre Che DNA. The biggest gathering of amateur skiers in the world, with over 2,000 participants! The principle: an obstacle race across the entire ski area, with new events every year, each crazier than the last!

Youth Ski Mountaineering World Cup - March 25-30, 2025

Complètement à la Masse ! - March 29, 2025

Sporty, offbeat and super fun: Complètement à la Masse is the event not to be missed this winter in Les Menuires! The day is divided into two parts: a morning dedicated to competition and challenging yourself, solo or in a team.
The Masse sector hosts a tricky descent, with entertainment all along the way. The afternoon is even more fun, with a giant barbecue, toboggan race and concert on the Stade Olympique and Croisette sides.

Glisse en Cœur - March 21 to 23, 2025

24 hours of skiing and concerts for a great cause: in 15 editions, Glisse en Coeur has established itself as the charity event of the French mountains.
This success is based on an original concept combining solidarity and skiing in relay teams from Saturday 2pm to Sunday same time, all in an atmosphere brought to life by live concerts given each winter by leading names from the French music scene. The challenge for the competing teams is to race down the eponymous slope, having first raised several hundred thousand euros over the weekend in donations for recognized children's charities.

In the history of the Telemark World Cup, Val Montjoie has played an important role in its development, particularly in Les Contamines-Montjoie. Numerous athletes will be giving their all to shine, like contaminard champions Antoine Bouvier (Globe de Cristal in 2013 and bronze medallist at the 2015 world championships) and Ludovic Callamard (5th place at the Val Thorens world championships in 2001). Franglish Comedy festival - January 27-31, 2025

In Méribel, English DNA is part of the resort's history, so when the idea came up of combining French and English origins in a comedy festival, support was immediate.

Launched last winter, the “Franglish Comedy Festival” features French and English comedians on stage. Some evenings, each performs in his or her native language, but for one evening, they swap languages: the English perform sketches in French, and vice versa. Several artists from the international comedy scene will once again be present for this second edition. Shows are scheduled to take place in the auditorium, as well as in bars around Méribel in late show format.

An ode to life, but also to conviviality and good humor, in the enchanting setting of the Vosges mountains. This is a unique opportunity to discover all the styles that the instrument allows. With the second street art festival in the mountains, Val d'Arly breaks new ground in 2025! The Val d'Arly Tourist Office will be offering a wide range of events over the five days, including exhibitions, frescoes, live shows, workshops and conferences! These are just some of the subjects that will delight enthusiasts and amateurs, young and old, gathered together for these few days around Street Art in the heart of Val d'Arly.
40 artists, 2 exhibition galleries, 19 frescoes (including 14 new ones), live performances, animations, workshops, 4 highlights... It promises to be a fast-paced event!

Val d’Isère

International Adventure & Discovery Film Festival - April 14-17, 2025

A springtime cultural rendezvous, the four-day festival features 11 après-ski screenings at the Centre des Congrès, in cinemas and online. The films in the selection are presented by travel writer Sylvain Tesson in the presence of the adventurers and directors. Debates, meetings, events and exhibitions around the projects make the festival a concentrate of human exchanges where the public takes part in the adventure.
