I'm excited about the second installment of my "mama and me" series! Last season's was all about my time as a stay at home mom, trying to figure out summer style in a time of being recently postpartum and being home with my children. Now that I've starting working full time again, with a more balanced work/life schedule, and much more time in the office rather than the hospital, I've been having some fun wearing real clothes again! Hello! After an unplanned little hiatus while starting at my new job, I'm back to talk about my Nordstrom trunk this month! I accidentally skipped last month's trunk, which actually was really wonderful, and landed a new dressed up sweater, a cozy casual turtleneck, and winter booties in my closet.

Unfortunately, we somehow took a turn after three great months worth of trunks. This month's trunk reminded me of how I approached shopping around the time that I first started blogging - I remember I always bought items in different colors so I had an even amount of colors in my closet. Like I wouldn't buy a sweater in black because I already owned a black sweater, so instead I would buy it in like bright green so "even out" my closet. That left me with a closet full of clothes that 1. didnt go together and 2. didn't flatter me and 3. didn't get worn because I didn't actually like them. Now, after years of blogging and assessing and writing out why and why not I like something, I personally gravitate towards neutrals, and occasional light blues and soft pinks, because I like how they look on me and therefore actually get worn. That's not to say that it's not nice to branch out once in a while, but for the most part...I now know what I like and how it will work in my closet. So to get a trunk full of colorful items, after saying I really prefer neutrals, was a bit of a loss for this month's trunk. I also wasn't able to decline items before they were shipped, which means instead of removing items I know I don't want even without trying them on, they were all shipped to me without my input. Not sure if there was a glitch, but normally I would have said I wouldn't want some of the items in my original trunk.

First up is Nordstrom's cashmere turtleneck. I've actually had great luck with their cashmere items over the years - this turtleneck poncho was a favorite before it meet its early demise from a sad encounter with the dryer (RIP), and recently purchased this funnel sweater, which I have been loving. I may have even kept this turtleneck if it had come in the camel, brown taupe, or black, but this blue sweater just isn't something I see myself wearing often. It also is quite sheer, as you can see my bra right through it. It does come in lots of beautiful colors though, and fits true to size, so if you're looking to snag a thinner cashmere turtleneck on sale, this is a nice option.

The second sweater is this ribbed, polka dot sleeved number from CeCe. Let me tell you ladies, if you have a bigger chest that you aren't looking to emphasize, stay away from anything "ribbed". It's like an optical illusion that draws all attention to your chest. Also, the color "vibrant kelly" is not something I would naturally gravitate towards. Overall this just made me feel frumpy, and I didn't love it.

The last sweater is from BP, and quite affordable at <$25. While I know everything cropped + high waisted is in right now, I don't love it on me - most high waisted items make me feel a bit self-conscious in this postpartum life, and the cropped version gives me flashbacks to everything always being too short on me. If you are rocking the high-waisted pants, this would be a cute affordable option that comes in five colors. Fits true to size.

Initially I was excited to try this Vince Camuto top. The color is very pretty, and the fabric was thicker than recent tops I've tried. But man, those sleeves! I found them very annoying, and definitely not something I could wear under a white coat at work. I appreciate trying to make a blouse more fun, but not for me. Fits true to size.

So not only did my trunk come with very colorful pieces I did not ask for, but it also jumped way out of my listed price ranges. This coat costs ONE THOUSAND DOLLARS. Granted, it's on sale for $700....

It is a beautiful coat. Fit very nicely except a bit tight at the hips (you can see that it's not fitting well by the way it pulls apart), but the sleeves were a great length, and it felt well in the waist. But I do not have $700 to spend on a fancy coat I don't need or have a place to wear often.

This, on the other hand....WHAT IS THIS. This is a puffer jacket with the sleeves removed. How am I supposed to wear this. Where do I wear this. Like in what weather will I need my torso (and head?) be super covered and warm...but have bare arms. Obviously I'm keeping it.

kiddingggggg.

Nothing about high waisted, cropped, cargo pants are anything I want or need. I hate these.

This month's trunk had two pair of shoes in them. There really wasn't anything wrong with either of them. The first pair is from Vionic. They were comfortable, the brown color is super great neutral, but I already own this pair of slip on sneakers, and I don't really need two pairs right now. I may keep them in mind in the future, and maybe if they go on sale, I'll get them. I do think they are a bit overpriced at full price.

The other pair is from Calson, and is a waterproof bootie. I can't really explain what I don't like about these, but I knew I was never going to grab for them, and so that was enough to not keep them.

And that's it! My first trunk where I didn't keep anything. I don't know if there was a mix up or what happened this month, as several of my friend's also didn't have a good experience this month. As the styling fee is waived every month as I have the Nordstrom card, I definitely will continue getting the trunks for now, as I really have been happy with them up to this point. I think they are a great way to try on new items that I may not have otherwise. I also like that I can try them on at home, and if I'm on the fence, try them with a few items in my closet. nordstrom trunk club: october 2021

I have been looking forward to my newest Trunk Club for weeks! First of all, I just love getting things in the mail, so that's always fun, but I love the combination of having someone pick some clothes out for me, letting me have a say in what I actually want, and then getting a few more surprises! I've been wearing my items from last month a ton, with the Barbour coat being worn almost daily. This month I asked for a few more cooler weather work tops, as well as some jeans. Here's what I got!

The first item I tried was this Calson textured top. While we are going into the colder weather, I liked this top enough to keep it for the spring. I think it'll look so cute with some navy slacks and textured loafers. It's somewhat see through, so you'll definitely want to wear a layering piece underneath. I don't love the open petal sleeve portion when it falls down, but a small stitch will keep it in place. I'm wearing a size large here. If you're interested, it's also currently on sale for under $30! I almost love the tan color even more.

Now for some tops I did not like. I could not like this tie neck shirt less. It was way too big, the fabric was kind of itchy, the neck tie was large and in the way, and the pattern was not my style. While I love a pussybow shirt, this was not it.

I wanted to like this Vince Camuto top, but it was oversized in all the wrong places for me. It had too much fabric around the bottom, the tie portion was awkward, and the sleeves had too much fabric around the elastic part. This is why I like Trunk Club though - it makes me try things that I wouldn't normally, and while this one isn't a keeper, there may be ones that are.

I feel this Halogen top was put into my trunk by mistake because I said I didn't want anything orange and this is very orange...and just overall not good. Looking online, there are so many better colors/patterns, so I'm bummed to get this one. The fit is off though too - while I can appreciate the look that this is trying to achieve, the hanging fabric in the front was pretty unflattering. This was the biggest miss of the trunk :/

I think this Lucky henley was added for some weekend wear attire but I learned years ago that while I like the look on others, the henley material and cut is not flattering on me, so this was a quick pass.

I wish I had taken a picture of me wearing this Madewell sweater with jeans because it's so cute tucked into jeans and a cognac belt. I'm wearing a size large here, and it's the perfect juuuuuust slightly oversized without getting lost in it. I'm keeping it and plan on wearing it all winter.

I received 3 parts of pants/jeans in this trunk. The first pair of jeans were AG skinny jeans. These are nice jeans - I've always wanted to try AG jeans, and these felt so nice. They were supportive in the belly area, long enough on me, and just overall fit nice (and true to size). But I have enough dark skinny jeans in my closet that I don't currently need this pair, so they are going back. This style also comes in black though, which I would like a new pair of, so I may end up ordering them instead.

I can't say that I would purposely go out and buy these Spanx leggings, but when they showed up at my house for me to try on...well, now I'm a believer. This puppies are amazing. They are Spanx, so of course they help support everything, but they also aren't falling down all day long. They are pretty high waisted, which I prefer for my leggings any way. They are pricy, for sure, so hopefully they go on sale occasionally. I'm wearing a large, and the fit true to size.

I have honestly wanted to try Good American jeans for a while because I've heard good things, so I was pretty excited to try this pair of jeans on. Unfortunately, this is a style that I would need in tall sizing. While they are meant to be cropped, these are like...too short to be cropped on me. You can also see that the distressing on the knee hits me above the knee, which just looks silly. The fabric was very nice though, and I'm definitely hoping to try other pairs in the future. These ones just didn't work for me.

The last item in my trunk was a pair of Marc Fisher booties that are honestly beautiful, but in zero wants practical for my life or something I would ever wear. If I was a heeled bootie kind of girl, I would be all about these, but I don't wear heels and so they just don't make sense for me. So pretty though!

So in the end, I'm keeping the leggings, the blue blouse, and the Madewell sweater! I'm already excited to see what comes next month :)

review: sweater weather

If you've been following along on instagram and/or tiktok, you know that I've spent the last month slowly revamping my closet to get ready to start my first attending job. If you've been a long time follower, you know that I used to actually wear real clothes prior to residency...but then I didn't wear anything except scrubs (and yoga pants on the rare time off) for 4 years, so literally 95% of my closet consists of clothes from 2017 and earlier. So I've been trying to update my closet for the current styles, my current body, and the work I'm going in to.

The big one I needed to work on was finding dress pants! The Limited used to be my go-to - I wore the hell out of those pants for 4 years, but sadly they closed so that's no longer an option. I had minimal luck finding long enough pants while at the mall - most stores don't have tall versions in stores, and some places, like Ann Taylor, don't even make dress pants in the tall option. Long story short, I had good luck with the J.Crew Cameron pants - they come in a tall option online, so I ended up ordering the black and navy version, and both are currently at the tailor to hem and take in the knee (I think this is such a game changer when it comes to making dress pants look sleeker!).

I ended up trying so many things in the last few weeks that I'm going to break it up into a few posts, so here are the sweaters I've tried and/or purchased recently!

This Loft sweater vest is my new favorite item. I've seen several sweater vests over the last year and they gave me major 5th grade vibes, and I wanted nothing to do with them. But then I tried this one on, and fell in love. I think because it's a big longer, so it's the more updated cooler version. I did size down to a medium, which gives it a more fitted look - I'm wearing it with this Treasure & Bond top in the picture on the right. I also bought the blue grey version this week! It's a great layering piece going into the cooler weather. It's currently 30% off.

I bought this short sleeved sweater during the same visit. In pictures they look so similar but I promise they are different! I love this top for the current weather - it's ideal for low 60 degrees! I also sized down to a medium on this top. Looks super cute tucked into jeans or even dress pants.

This poncho though...not great. Too short on me, the pockets add too much fabric around my waist, and just made me feel very square. Reading the reviews, it looks like others felt the same way. It's a shame, because the pink color is so pretty!

Speaking of pink sweaters though, I'm all about this comfy oversized knit cardigan from Gap. I got it in a large tall - the length is great for covering your butt in leggings, or for just an oversized look. I've already received so many compliments on it! The reviews are also raving about it. I wish the cream color wasn't sold out in my size because it's that good.

My favorite sweater of all time was lovingly washed and then subsequently dried by my dear husband, which was so nice...but because it was a cashmere, it shrunk to about children's size, so R.I.P. I've been trying to replace it for 4 years, but haven't found anything close. I tried this J.Crew sweater in hopes it would be closet...but this guy is ginormous. I am wearing the medium/large, and could size down I suppose, but I think the very oversized style of it is not going to be the ideal replacement for my old sweater.

I've wanted a long duster cardigan for some time now, so I was excited to see this beautiful version from Banana Republic. It's thicker so it's warm but not too thick that you lose your shape. It has hidden side pockets, so it's not adding extra material in the middle but...you know, pockets <3. I'm wearing a size large here, and the reviews agree that it fits true to size. It is definitely on the more pricy side but it was 20% off in stores and I had a reward so it ended up costing me $50, which I was very excited about. I knew I had to get it when I kept trying it on and trying to convince myself I didn't need it.

We had friends stay with us a few weeks ago, and both of the girls had this adorable Target sweater...so I ordered it while we were all sitting around the fire. It's definitely oversized, so I would suggest sizing down - I'm wearing a medium here. I'm wearing it in the color rust, which keeps popping in out and of stock. The cream is also super pretty, and probably more versatile though, so that would be the one I would suggest getting if you are interested!

mama & me: summer 2021

Throughout the summer, I tried to remember to snap a few pictures of my outfits. I definitely don't have the time anymore to scout a location, set up a tripod, take a few hundred pictures, and edit them...so quick snaps on my phone is as good as it's going to get currently ;). I also have a two year old who most of the time refused to take a picture with me! Doesn't she know we are trying to BLOG HERE. Luckily Theo was always willing (...against his will).

Summer is my least favorite season to dress for, so the majority of the time I just wore my favorite old shorts with an easy top to nurse in. Transitioning out of 100% scrubs has been hard for several reasons - the nursing sports bras I used to wear don't work with real clothes. Luckily, these bras from Target have built in pads so I don't have to worry about putting nursing pads on all the time! I also don't really have any dedicated nursing tops, I just wear looser tops so it's easy to pull up.

Several of my girlfriends are in a similar position I am when it comes to work clothes - recently out of residency, having not really purchased new items in a while, and now needing a whole closet of work clothes. One of my friends mentioned that she was having a lot of luck with StitchFix and Nordstrom Trunk Club. I tried out StitchFix this spring but didn't end up loving anything, and then felt my $25 were kind of forcing me to keep items I wasn't 100% in love with. What drew me to ordering a Nordstrom Trunk though was that if you have a Nordstrom card, their $25 styling fee is waved! So I can order trunks and not feel like I have to keep anything just to not lose $25. I really love that a box full of clothes just shows up at my house, I get to try them on in the privacy of my own home with my own closet, keep what I want, and have FedEx pick up the box from my front door. It also helps to have a stylist give me new styles to try on, to see how they work with my body, life, and current wardrobe. I am fairly consistent about basically buying the same items just in different colors/patterns, so this kind of forces me to try new things that I may love.

I signed up through the app, answered a few questions about what I was looking for, filled out my sizes, and the next day got an email saying my box was ready to be reviewed. I swapped out a few things I knew I wasn't going to like at all, and left a few spots open for my stylist's suggestions. A few days later, the box showed up at my house!

Here's what I got!

First up is a pair of Treasure and Bond pull on pants (that is no longer online?). I really love Treasure & Bond - I think they have a great mix of structured casual and more flowing work items, and everything I've purchased (including this button up recently) I've loved....so it's unfortunate that these pants are just so...unfortunate. Maybe great for like a beach vacation, but not for work. There was just too much fabric and made me feel huge.

These Nic + Zoe pull on pants, on the other hand, are great! I probably wouldn't have purchased them just by seeing them online, but glad I got them in the box. The pull on style means they aren't digging into my postpartum belly, and the stretch in the fabric makes it comfy to wear all day. I've always gotten my work pants altered at the knee because I find the fabric bunches up there, so I need to find a tailor here to do that for me, but overall these pants are a great place to start when it comes to rebuilding my work wardrobe! They fit true to size.

I did not like these rag&bone split hem pants though. They were long, which I appreciated that the stylist worked on finding something long enough for me (it was one of the things I mentioned), but I did not like the split hem (it made the pants swish around my ankles and gave me throw back feelings to when my pants were too short growing up), and they were way too tight. It was nice though to have the option of trying something new, even if it didn't work out.

I've ran across a few Rail items over the years that I really liked, but never ordered because the price range was a bit out of my budget. I was excited to finally try something of theirs when I received their camp shirt. This is a rayon/linen blend shirt that just sits so nicely. It's loose enough that the buttons aren't straining at my chest, but isn't super loose (like similar style Madewell shirts) that I lost my shape. I liked it so much but it was a bit of my price range, so technically I'm returning it...but I'm also getting it! During a middle of the night feeding, I figured maybe I could find it on like Poshmark or something, so I did a quick google search and found that Saks had 1 left in my size...for $37. That's basically 1/5 of the original price! I immediately checked out and it's on its way to me now. So while I technically didn't buy it from my Nordstrom Trunk, I did get the shirt anyway. So thank you, NTC, for the intro, and thank you Saks for the shirt at a huge discount ;)

Technically, I specifically asked for this Caslon top to be included in my trunk, but I ended up not loving it. It's fine, there's really nothing wrong with it, I just don't love it. I have several similar tops, so it's not filling a hole in my closet, and I find it overall to be a little too "mature" for me.

My trunk included two sweaters that I really didn't like. This Frame cardigan was too expensive, too small, and too thin. I also received a Vince ribbed top that I didn't even bother trying on because again, too expensive, and way too thin. I've learned with time that I either need more flowy shirts or shirts with more structured fabric, and these had neither.

I've wanted a Barbour jacket for years, but never actually tried one on, so I was thrilled to see it in my Trunk. Now that I live in a much colder part of the country, I need some actual coats to wear, especially in the early/late winter. The quilted Beadnell has such a classic shape and in black, I know it's something I'll get many many years of wear out of. It's a bit pricy, but I also feel comfortable spending more on something that will get a ton of wear over many years, rather than a thinner blouse that I'm likely not going to wear as often.

My trunk included two pairs of shoes. I asked for flats, since that's what I wear to work. I didn't love either enough to keep. The ones on the left are Kate Spade - they were on sale, which was nice, but the colors don't really work for my closet, and the construction felt cheap. The pair on the right are from Vionic, a brand I'm not familiar with. The hot pink color was fun but they were too shiny and I didn't love how high they go up on my feet, so both are going back.

And that was the end of my trunk! You have the option to sign up for trunks every 1, 2, or 3 months. penny's play kitchen

The room I am probably the most excited about, truly, in our new house is what is going to be the playroom. It was previously used as an office, but with its location directly off the living room, it's the perfect room for our children. In our last house, we did not have a separate space for Penny - her bedroom was very small, and only could hold her crib, small dresser, and rocking chair. We had a small cabinet in our living room that housed the majority of her toys, but as she and Theo grow up, the toys get bigger too, so I'm just so thrilled to make their own little space for them to play and explore and have fun!

One of the first projects I knew I was going to do was make her a little play kitchen. I've seen so many "Ikea hacks" for the Ikea play kitchen, and so I spent hours looking at different ones on pinterest. The one that spoke to me the most was one I found on the blog Katie Lamb. I love the gender neutral colors, and her step by step instructions made it pretty easy to follow. The only difference is that I used a latex brush on paint rather than a spray paint! Basically the steps to making this little play kitchen your own:

Figure out parts //

Take out all parts from the box, and figure out which pieces you will paint what color. I made 3 piles - the blue pile, the white pile, and the don't touch it pile.

Things I should have done here: sanded and primed. Things I didn't do: sand and prime. Instead I just taped off the pieces I needed to tape off, and started the painting process.

Paint //

Each piece got 2 coats of paint. I then let them cure for a few days before starting the assembly process. For the metal pieces, I used Katie's trick of using a box to peg all the metal parts up to paint easier, then they got 3-4 coats of spray paint. I let these sit for a few days before attaching to the kitchen.

Countertop //

I used this butcher block contact paper to make over the countertop. I used a credit card to apply it tightly across the top, and then cut out the holes for the sink and stove top. I also applied a little super glue on each of the corners to really secure it where it would likely peel off first.

Backsplash //

I bought a thick plastic board from Michael's. I got one pack of these stick & peel hexagon "tiles" on Amazon that I just love so much. They are a great neutral with some variation in color that adds a nice texture to the backsplash. I measured the size of board I needed for the back splash, cut it to that size, and then attached the tile. It was super easy, and a lot cheaper than some of the $40 options I saw on Etsy!

Assemble //

After everything had a few days to cure, I followed the instructions to put everything together - honestly, probably the most annoying part, but also so fun to see it all come together! Then during nap time, I brought it inside from the garage and got to set it up with all the little accessories I had found. I was so excited to show Penny!

There are so many adorable play food items out there, that it was hard to stick with just a few items! We have a little wood toaster that has a little lever that lifts the toast, and comes with butter! That, and our little espresso machine are the biggest hits. We have a little set of fruit and vegetables that are connected by magnets, which is so nice since they can't wear out like velcro could. Although we do have a little egg set that is probably the most played with item, and it's held up very well so far. She was gifted this little apron that we had personalized with her name, and I can't wait to eventually get one for Theo as well. I think for Christmas we are going to get her a set of little oven mitts!

I loved making this little kitchen for my babies, and am excited to get started in converting the office into their playroom. Next up on my projects for the room is this magnet wall!

Oh man. Postpartum clothing shopping....not exactly super fun.

I feel in such a weird clothing funk right now. I almost feel like I went into a coma and came out four years later with a new body and not understanding current styles. I really only purchased a handful of non-maternity items over the past four years, and so now I feel like I'm kind of starting over, with a different body than before. Just to kind of let you in on where my head space is currently at. I may have left the mall crying yesterday. So if you've been there...you're definitely not alone.

Okay, first up is this beautiful top from J.Crew. I've had my eye on it forever, and finally ordered it during a sale. I'm wearing a size large here. Initially when I put it on, I liked it. Then I looked at it from all angles and decided I didn't like it. Because the fabric is thinner, it kind of puffs up from the chest down, so from the side it looks a bit sack like. And then now looking at it again, I like it! Isn't this a fun process?

But seriously...I think I like it. It's cute both for work under a blazer or white coat, and then for a more casual night out. I think this lighter blue isn't the one for me though, and I think I'm going to order it again in the light mint. Or white, because I'm predictable.

Are popovers back in? I've been seeing them all over the place, and I, for one, am here for it. I love this style shirt! This one isn't the one for me though. I'm wearing a 12 tall here - I do like the length on me, and am thankful it comes in the tall option. I just don't love the fabric - it felt very stiff and as you can see, see-through. I wish it was just a bit more opaque so you can't see my nursing bra! As I do like this style of shirt, I'm hoping they'll come out with a different fabric or color this fall.

I had seen this Madewell skirt in instagram ads a few times, but it wasn't until I saw Merrick's instagram post with a very similar skirt (or maybe the same one?) that I had to order it. I don't have any midi skirts but I have wanted a cute item for my closet to wear for date nights! This is just such a comfortable, light, and flowy skirt. It fits true to size, I'm wearing a large here - the waistline is very stretchy, so you could consider sizing down. Now I would really like a white bodysuit to wear with it to help streamline the area around my waist. Any suggestions? All the ones I'm seeing out there are like $80!

The last item I had ordered online from Madewell are these classic straight jeans. From the front, these are so flattering - almost tummy controlling, looser than skinny jeans but not too baggy that your shape gets lost. But these were SO tight on my belly - I could hardly squat down! I ordered what I think is my normal size 31, but these were just so tight and frankly, not flattering from the side. I did really love the color and overall style though, so during the next sale I plan on ordering them a size up to see if that makes them feel and look better.

Of course, I had to take advantage of a day when Penny went to hang out with family for part of the day, so Theo and I went to the mall to return the items above...and try a few things on. It's been years since I've actually been in a mall and tried things on there! The only item I ended up taking home is this Hayden top in a black/white pattern that isn't even online yet. They only had mediums left in store, but it actually made the fit more flattering. I find the majority of Madewell tops to not fit me well, as they are shorter and boxier on me than I prefer for myself. This has just a little more length than other shirts I've tried, and sizing down to medium means I don't totally get lost in the shirt. Plus the fabric is soooo soft! They previously had this style in a white, which I'm so sad is no longer available in my size. Again a great top for hanging out with the babies, but can be dressed up with black (or mustard!) pants for work.

This floral puff sleeve shirt....is not for me. I tried it on because the non-boxy, longer length drew me in, and because I saw Shea McGee looking super cute in puffy sleeved shirts and I basically want to be her...but this is not for me. Maybe styled correctly, with my hair done and in the right light...but I know that that is rarely the situation, so I didn't want to buy a shirt that I would actually never wear. If it does seem like your style though, I am wearing a large here, and the fabric is nice and thick. Cute, but not for me.

While it is currently 86 (!) degrees out, I did just move to one of the snowiest cities in the country, so I'm starting to think about what I'm supposed to wear during the many months of winter coming my way. I was drawn to the colors and texture of this sweater, but kind of feel like a frumpy grandpa in it. I can see why the cool kids would love this, but as a 33 year old mom of two who is currently working through some postpartum body issues, this was not the one for me.

Y'all know I love a good plaid blazer, but I've wanted an updated, more casual version. I saw this oversized blazer on a TikTok some weeks ago, and wanted to try it. This was such a comfortable blazer, and really I could tell the difference between a $30 H&M blazer and a $170 blazer, but this wasn't the one for me either. My H&M blazer is a very similar color, so I feel I don't want to repeat it. I also found it too boxy on me, so I'll keep an eye out for something that works better for me. I've been eyeing this Vince Camuto version - I could definitely see myself wearing it to work this fall!

So here is where we are at. I'm still trying to figure myself out. I'm trying to work with my newer, different body. I'm trying to understand what the current styles are, while also knowing that I already know what I like, and trying to blend those together. I'm trying to figure out my current stay at home mom life, while knowing that I'm stepping into an attending ObGyn life in 2 months, where I will spend the majority of my time in an outpatient clinic. I am so excited to talk about our new home! This spring, we sold our first home. We had loved making that home our own. It was the perfect house for us, but we were slowly outgrowing it...plus we were moving two states away, so we got lucky in a sellers market, and sold it in days. Finding a house, on the other hand, was tough. We lost several houses, but then got the luckiest when a younger couple was selling their beautiful home, and chose us to buy their house, even though we had competition with an all cash, no cap offer. I believe it's because they had young children and the house was made to raise kids in. We are just so thrilled to have gotten a house in this market.

This house is twice the size of our last one. It has one more bedroom, it's own dining room, an office, and a formal living room...all things we did not have in our first home. We brought all of our furniture with us, but the majority of it doesn't really fit into the space - it's either the wrong shape or too small for the space. But furniture is expensive, so we are buying it in stages. We started with our bedroom!

I had saved up for the last month so we could furnish part of our bedroom when we moved in. We wanted our room to be calm and bright, and my husband requested to have shades of green in it. We painted one of the walls a really pretty green (Behr Eucalyptus Wreath), and the rest a bright white. When it came to furnishing it, I've always wanted a king sized bed. After months of debating which one to get, we went with the West Elm MidCentury Frame - it's so so pretty in real life and looks great with the green wall and hardwood floors! We went with a Saatva mattress, which is described as "hotel like", and as a belly sleeper, I've really really liked it. I had had my eye on this Crate and Barrel duvet, and I love the texture that it adds to the bed without it being an overwhelming pattern.

As a side story, prior to medical school, I was really into thrifting. That's how I spent my evenings and weekends when I was working full time - finding goodies at Goodwill and garage sales. Now that I have my life back, and 3 months off before starting my first attending job, as well as a house to furnish, I've really rediscovered that thrifting bug. But with having two small children and a husband who works out of the house, spending hours at the thrift stores isn't really a possibility right now, so I've become a hardcore Facebook Marketplace fiend! In the 6 weeks we have lived here, I've already found several amazing pieces for our house. A few needed a little love, some needed nothing, and I can't wait to see how they tell their story in our house. The overall "look" for our house is transitional - filling our bright and airy spaces with a mix of old school charm with modern touches. That's the great thing about finding furniture and decor that's pre-loved - it doesn't need to fall into one design style, it just needs to fit the space.

So, we had the bed, the bedding, and the rug, but needed a few other items for our bedroom. Top of the list were a dresser, and bedside tables, and then also a big mirror, lamps, and art. I spent several weeks looking at different dressers on FBMP when I ran across a beautiful 9 drawer pine dresser that was selling for $120. I reached out to the seller immediately, and went to see it that afternoon. It turns out it had been a part of an estate sale but no one bought it, so the price was decreased and put on FBMP...where it promptly became mine!

As far as I can tell, the dresser is from sometime between the mid 20th century. It's made of pine, with dovetail construction on the drawers. The hardware is brass, but we will get to that in a second! When we got the dresser to our house, I noticed the smell immediately. It smelled like someone's very nice grandmother. The dressers had a paper lining, which was easily removed. I then wiped out each drawer with a 50/50 vinegar/water mixture, which apparently neutralizes perfumes. I then put some baking powder on paper plates, and put them in each drawer, and then put the drawers back in the dresser. We didn't put any clothes in the dresser for a week, and by the end of the week, all the former scents were gone!

Now that it smelled new, it was time to update the hardware. Because of the very unique drawer pulls, it wasn't really an option to replace them because the stain behind the pulls was different than the rest of the drawer. So I removed all the pulls, soaked them for a few minutes in Dove power wash, and then used this magic powder to remove all the tarnish. It was amazing how a few minutes of scrubbing could complete remove the tarnish!

Now she's sitting in our bedroom, and is mostly used as a baby changing table. I'm debating what to do above the dresser though. Across from it, above our bed, we already have a large piece of art (see below). Our big mirror is going on the third wall of the room, and the fourth wall currently just has two windows (...that still need curtains). I initially thought another mirror, but we don't really need it since we have the big one on the wall. Then I was thinking maybe a gallery wall? Several pieces of art? I don't know, I feel torn.

I also bought two bedside tables on FBMP that need to be sanded and painted - they aren't a real wood so painting makes the most sense. I'm thinking maybe black paint and then gold hardware? We also need lamps for the bedside tables, I'd like two additional pillows in a green to go with the wall color, and this blanket for the edge of the bed. Once Theo's pack n play is moved out, we also would like to add a chair and small table in the corner.

So while I'm excited about where we currently are, there's so much left to do!

my current skincare routine for mid-30s skin

I have shared my skincare routines over the years (2016 at age 28, 2018 at age 30) and I think the latest change to my skincare regimine is reflected of where I'm at in my mid 30s as a mother to two young children - quick and easy, gets results, and prevents future problems. I have dry skin that needs moisture. The acne I was dealing with for years is now kept at bay, but instead now we are dealing with fine lines. The addition of several key lotions and potions have made a huge difference in my skin though, and I'm so happy about where we are at.

As a disclaimer, I did get 3 sessions of microneedling done back in 2016-2018 that helped with some acne scarring, and I get botox about twice a year, although with my pregnancies, I haven't really had much botox in the last 3 years. I also get a small amount of filler in my tear troughs every two years as I have had basically hollowed eye sockets since childhood. I think while those things helped target specific concerns that skin care can't fix, but the daily skin care routines make such difference in how your overall skin looks and feels. I'm at such a good place with how I feel about my skin that I don't wear anything on my skin other than some concealer and setting powder - I no longer wear any foundation or even a CC cream unless it's a special occasion. So here's my current routine, and why having a "less is more" approach is working for me now!

AM //

I don't used a cleanser in the morning, I just wash my face with water and then pat dry. Then I use

Vitamin C serum: Probably the biggest game changer for me has been adding vitamin C serums to my routine. I've tried several, I used BeautyPie's vitamin C ampules for several years until finally splurging on the SkinCeuticals version last month (it's the most hyped and recommended Vitamin C serum I've seen). It's been proven to help reduce free radical damage, and improve fine lines and overall brightness. I've definitely noticed a huge difference in the brightness of my skin with consistent Vitamin C use over the last three years. One big thing to note is that the stability of Vitamin C isn't great, so not all Vitamin C serums are created equal but I think all provide a benefit. As with most skin care, this is something you have to use daily and for a while until you see a difference, but with consistent use, you will get amazing results. As the SkinCeuticals serum is pricy (the priciest skin care item I've ever purchased), here's a post about dupes to the skinceuticals serum - I've always had great success with Paula's Choice so their Vitamin C serum would be my recommendation. If you aren't using a Vitamin C serum yet, I highly recommend adding one.

Moisturizer: Like I said, I have dry skin, and have been very loyal to Belif's moisture bomb for years now. It's a medium thick cream, so it's great for daily morning use - provides enough moisture but doesn't turn you into an oil slick (I save that for night time!). Love love love.

Sunscreen: Some years ago, I read that the best anti-aging cream you can buy is sunscreen and that somehow blew my mind but also makes sense. I've been consistently using daily facial sunscreen since my mid 20s and I like to think it's what keeps me looking so youthful ;) (...that, and the fact that I worked 60-80s hours a week and never saw the sun....). Something I didn't learn until recently though is that you're supposed to put your sunscreen on last in your routine! I'm currently using up my first bottle of SuperGoop's Glow Screen, which I quite enjoy as it leaves you all dewy and young looking. Next up I'm going to try EltaMD's sunscreen though, because it's again one that comes highly recommended my the dermatologists I follow. In the past I've also really liked Paula's Choice sunscreen, if you're looking for another price point.

PM //

Cleanser: I can't find any make-up remover/cleanser as much as I love the Glossier cleanser. With just three pumps of the cleanser, I can take off all my make up without needing two different cleansers or separate make up remover. I've tried a bunch of others in the past, and always come back to this as it's so easy and works so well. If you're lazy, and don't wear a ton of face make up, this is a great option for you to remove your make up and cleanse your skin.

Retinol: The other "must have" item that is always recommended to use is a type of retinol. From my basic non-dermatologist understanding, retinols are typically purchased over the counter and tretinoin is a prescription. I was prescribed a tretionoin cream by my dermatologist about six years ago, but as I moved several times, and couldn't make it to an actual dermatologist's office (plus most had a 6 month wait list), I started using Dear Brightly. You have an online consultation with a derm (including sending pictures of your skin), and they send you prescription retinol. I love this version of retinol because it is formulated with hyaluronic acid, so I haven't experienced as much of the dryness I did with Retin-A Micro. As I've been a long term retinol user now, I use a stronger strength (0.1%). Not ready to get a prescription tretinoin cream? There are tons of over the counter retinol products in almost every price range, but if you are looking for the biggest change, I'd recommend an Rx, from either your local dermatologist (the generic creams are really not that expensive, as long as your get the generic versions!) or if you can't make it to in person dermatology appointment soon, try an online version like Dear Brightly. Start off slow with a lower concentration, make sure your skin is all the way dry when applying, and make sure you use a moisturizer.

Moisturizer: At night I like to go a bit heavier on the moisturizing. I'm still loving Vanicream for the days I use my tretinoin cream, and on days I don't use it, I like to use the traditional Nivea cream. I love how thick it goes on, and how soft my skin is in the morning!

Ointment: This CeraVe ointment has been a recent find (I think I saw it on a TikTok in a video about "slugging") and went out to buy it the next day. I've tried lots of different face oils to help trap in moisture, but this takes it to the next level. I smear it all over my face and I look a little ridiculous because of how greasy I look, but my skin is so so soft the next day. If you have oily skin, this is not the cream for you, but if you have drier skin like I do...run, don't walk.

In addition, I also apply this hair strengthening serum in hopes that my postpartum hair loss won't be as bad, and then put my hair in a low pony with a silk hair tie - I have had such bad breakage around the level I wear a messy bun that I'm really trying to break that habit, and have found that this really helps. I also use Lash Boost every other day to keep my eyelashes long and full.

So that's my quick and dirty skincare routine. It's not 12 steps, but that's why it works for me and the current state of my skin! I'd like to add back a mask or two when I take a bath, so if you have any current loves, I'd love to hear about them!

4 years later...and i'm back!

Hello!

Hi. It's been a while...a whole year actually...and basically four years since I consistently posted on my blog.

I started my blog 9 (NINE!) years ago, and documented my way through post-college life, figuring out my personal style, getting in to and starting medical school, break ups, new relationships, daily outfit posts, getting married, buying a house, and getting into residency. But then residency, and the 80 hour work weeks where I wore scrubs 100% of the time started...and blogging just stopped. I was just too tired, and felt I had nothing left to give. And as a style blog, wearing scrubs all the time isn't conducive to a blog that is about buying and wearing clothes. Oh, and then I got pregnant and then really had no time or energy left.

But here we are, on the other side. I completed my ObGyn residency, moved to Rochester NY with my husband and now two babies. I took 3.5 months off before I start my "real" job and am starting over in so many ways. Here are a few of the things going on:

Closet updates. I have hardly purchased any clothing in 4 years, and as now a 33 year old mother of two, I feel I have nothing to wear. I only have a few casual items, the majority are business casual items that may or may not fit me anymore. I'm still dressing very millennial, with my skinny jeans and flats and flowy tops, and honestly that's probably not going to change...I shouldn't be dressing like I'm 17 because I am not 17. But I do want to update a few things so they fit my new life and new body. I've carried, birthed, and fed/am feeding two young children...in 2.5 years. I'm actually about the same size I was before, but everything just fits a bit different now and that also plays a role in how I feel in my old clothes. I also am nursing, and that limits what I can wear too. So I'm buying some new items (hellllllo, new jeans! and loose pretty tops), and will share my thoughts here. Review posts were always my most popular, and I think we can learn together about finding clothes that fit our bodies, lifestyles, and personal style.
Home decor. We sold our first home, and are deep in painting and updating our new home! The housing market is insanity but we got so so lucky, and found the perfect house for us to raise our babies in. So I'm excited to share where we started, what our inspiration is, and how we are making it our own. Definitely taking it slow as I want to live here for a bit while trying to see how new pieces could fit into our space, and I also want to find a good balance between new items, and thrifted or upcycling used items. So maybe some interesting DIY posts coming your way.
Babies. Parenting has been a wild ride so far. Penny just turned two, and Theo is 3 months old. We have learned a ton over the past two years, but every day is like a new adventure. Excited to keep sharing some of our favorite items, asking for your advice, and just trying to raise kids who don't turn out to be a-holes (truly my biggest motivator).

Parenting and medicine bring me a lot of joy and fulfillment, but they also take up all of my time that I feel I have very little that is "mine" anymore...and that's why I want to get back in to blogging. For fun. For learning. For myself. I think probably many of you reading can relate - whether it's an all consuming job, family, or responsibility, it's nice to have something that is just "yours".

dealing with postpartum hairloss

When I was about 3-4 months postpartum, someone asked me on instagram how I was dealing with postpartum hair loss. I wasn't having any yet, and was like "hmmm, maybe this is one of those things I just got lucky and avoided!"

Jokes on me because two months later, my hair was falling out in handfulls. It was honestly disturbing how much hair I was losing every time I washed my hair. Every time I showered, I had huge clumps of hair left over. I seriously dreaded washing my hair. Everyone was commenting on the beautiful head of hair my baby had, while I was losing all of mine!

And then about two months later, I all of a sudden felt my hair looked crazy, because I had all these tiny short hairs along my hair line. Initially I thought it was just the new shampoo I was using, and then I finally realized it was my hair growing back. So not only did I lose a bunch of hair thickness, but then I had all these wirey new hairs growing in along my hairline.

Telogen effluvium is the medical term for diffuse hairloss (and definitely sounds like a Harry Potter spell). It happens after a big triggering event, like delivering a baby, and makes the hair follicles go from the growth phase they are in during pregnancy (which is why many women get thicker hair when they are pregnant) to the resting phase, where hair eventually falls out. It typically happens 3-4 months after that triggering event, which is what happened to me.

There isn't a "cure" for postpartum hair loss unfortunately, and not a ton you can do to prevent it. But there are a few things I found in this process that has helped deal with the hair loss and helping my hair in this journey!

every day // I continued taking a prenatal vitamin after penny's delivery. Not only is that helpful for lactating mothers, but I really believe it makes a difference for hair and nail growth! I don't have any medical knowledge to back that up with, but just something I've noticed personally. I also eat lots of healthy fats in avocados and olive oil, which I think helps.

in the shower // I only wash my hair every 5-6 days (thank you, world's best dry shampoo!). In the shower, I use Amika's purple shampoo for my highlighted hair with this shampoo brush - it helps get a great lather and supposedly stimulates blood flow to the scalp (again, who knows if this truly makes a difference as I don't have any studies to back that up with, but it sure feels good on the scalp!). Then I follow with the It's a 10 deep conditioner. I use a comb to detangle my hair while that is on - this is the traumatic part when you're going to lose a bunch of hair on the brush, but I think it's better to brush in the shower with the conditioner on as it's less tearing at wet hair outside of the shower.

after the shower // After I step out of the shower, I use this microfiber towel that I use by draping across my forehead and then spinning into a bun at the nape of my neck - I feel this pulls less at the hairline than when you drape it on top of your head because it's not pulling at the hairs when you spin it to be on top of your head. I think use several products specifically to help with regrowth, to protect the hairs I do have, and help smooth out the new hairs. First I apply Kerastase's strengthening serum mostly to be hairline and at the top of my head (I use two pipette's worth of product). This stuff is seriously worth it, and I will continue to buy it. It helps strengthen the hairs you have, preventing hairs from breaking off. Since I was already losing whole strands of hair, I didn't want to lose even more due to breakage. Then I apply Living Proof's no-frizz cream - this stuff is great for the frizz that comes with the new hair growth, and a little bit goes a long way. I focus this first on my ends and then at my hairline. After drying my hair, I use this hair oil, again first on my ends and then on my part. My hair is almost frizz free using these two products, and don't even straighten my hair anymore (which is an extra win since I'm not applying any heat!).

styling // I tried several different products and tricks to try to get the new hairs to lay flat - I even got one of those hair mascara products in hopes it would keep my new hairs down, but it really only worked for like 5 minutes and then they popped back up. I snuck a little bit of my husband's pomade to make the hairs at my hairline lay flat. Several people also had luck spraying some hairspray on an old toothbrush and using that to brush the hairs down! What I really had the most luck with though was just using headbands to get through this regrowth phase! Amazon is a goldmine for headbands. My favorite for work are these yoga headbands and these floral ones - I get compliments every time I wear them! I love the look of the Lele Sadoughi headbands but $150 for a headband is not something I can afford, so this pack of headbands in a similar style is a great alternative - I've worn these to several weddings and events and love the look of them! I just found this pack of 12 headbands that are now in my Amazon cart...my husband probably won't be too happy about even more headbands but when you wear them so often, you can't help but want a few more!

In the end, it's "just hair" and motherhood is hard enough without beating yourself up about your hair, so we all need to give ourselves some grace when it comes to how we think we look in the postpartum (or any time) period. The several times I brought up my crazy hair regrowth in real life or on instagram, every one said they didn't even notice! So it's like all things, we are always our worst critics! But I hope these little tips help you get through the months of losing and regrowing your hair. Would love to hear any other tips from all you experienced ladies!

clothing review: falling for instagram ads

Hello and welcome to my post about how I fell for internet ads. It only took me about four weeks to write this post, so we can thank motherhood and residency for that ;)

Okay so many of us have seen the Marine Layer ads on instagram for their tulip shaped Allison pants. I just loved the casual but pulled together look of the pants so after about the 20th ad, I finally ordered a pair. They come in sizes XS-XL, is made of a polyester/elastane combo, and retail for $98 (you can sign up for their emails and get 10% off your first order)

I find taking pictures of pants so difficult because it's hard to show how they really fit versus just how they feel, especially with black pants because pictures can forgive so much. Like in these pictures, I think they look cute and comfy!

But as much as I wanted to LOVE these pants, they just didn't fit me well. You can see it better in the picture below:

Everything about the fit was just off on me. I think these would probably look really great on a more straight body type, but they pulled so much on my thighs, dug into my sides, and then ballooned out in the front of the waist line...and as that's currently my biggest insecurity postpartum, I don't want pants that only emphasize this area. Could they may be fit better in the thighs if I sized up? Probably, but there would still be all that additional fabric in the front area that wouldn't be fixed by sizing up. Plus I think $98 is sooooo expensive for non-denim, non-work pants. Overall, not for me, but may be for you!

The other Marine Layer item I ordered was their Bali Tunic. Ya'll know I can't resist a white blouse tunic! I'm wearing my regular size large here. It's made of a cotton/rayon material, and overall it was nice, but I wasn't $88 in love with it. I loved the idea of the top - a linen materal, full short sleeves, slightly longer tunic style, but somehow I didn't love it on myself. I think the thick band around the wider neckline just wasn't the most flattering on me, and it could have been a few inches longer on me to really be tunic length. Or maybe I'm just being too hard on it and my current nursing boobs.

It unfortunately also was returned, even though I really wanted to love it! Overall I still really like the aesthetic of Marine Layer and am not opposed to ordering from them in the future, especially as they have free shipping and returns, but these items weren't the ones for me.

Next we have an order from Abercrombie...where I literally have never shopped in my entire life. But I've seen this asymmetrical zipped fleece for the past year, and when Jean posted saying it was on major sale, I had to finally order it. I LOVE this fleece! I'm wearing a size large in the olive/cream colorway. Ugh, this is just so cute. It's slightly longer, covering about half of my butt (I'm 5'9'' so things tend to be too short on me). It has pockets that lay flush with the jacket, so they aren't adding any width on your sides. The asymmetrical neckline makes it unique without being weird. It comes in a bunch of cute colors, I went with the olive/cream so I can wear it to work, but kind of love the leopard version and definitely want the mauve color. It's not currently on sale but keep an eye on it as I've seen it go on sale basically every other day (I'll also keep an eye on it and share if I see a good sale on instagram!).

I wanted to get free shipping, so I added a few other items that caught my eye. First was their drapey trench coat. I'm constantly looking for lightweight jackets and thought this would be cute in the spring/fall. Not going to lie, I was pretty disappointed in it when I got it. The fit is a bit off, the shorter trench coat looks like I just am wearing a too small coat. The two rows of buttons also makes it look like it's missing a row? The fabric is polyester/viscose combo, so it feels almost like wearing a sweater instead of a coat. Overall, not my favorite, although I had been hopeful.

OH LOOK. Another white blouse. This is their crinkle button-down blouse in my typical size large. I was pleasantly surprised by this blouse! It's sheer but not see through - I wear a white tank under everything, so that isn't a problem for me, but you'd definitely need an extra layer in between a bra and this shirt. It's definitely nothing ground breaking but would work great for work or a casual night out, so I'm keeping it, and am very happy with this purchase!

Nordstrom recently had a 25% off just about everything online, so I put in a fairly large order...and am keeping none of it. Thank you, free return policy! First is this BP twill coat, I'm in a size large. This was just basically too big and long on me? The waist strings were so long, the back of the coat went down to my knees, and I didn't love the weird green/brown color.

I shouldn't have even ordered this Lucky blouse because I didn't really even like it that much on the model so I don't know why I thought it would be any different in real life. It's overall a fine shirt, nothing really wrong with it, I just don't love it for what it is, which is a t-shirt with puffy sleeves. Would be cute with a pencil skirt for work...but ya know, scrubs.

I've wanted a few new shirts to wear when I do get to wear real clothes to work, so I was hoping this faux wrap top would work. Man, this is one of the cheapest feeling fabrics I've felt in a long time! It's 100% polyester but the fabric was oddly stiff and course. Besides that, I also didn't love the neckline - it either needs to have a full collar or be a v-neck, but not try to do both. I do wish it had worked out though because it comes in solid and cute prints!

Another top I was hoping to wear to work. Overall this Halogen blouse was fine - the color is nice, I like the pattern on the front, it has a very romantic feel. But the polyester fabric was super static-y and the sleeves were too loose to wear under a white coat. It also fits large - I'm wearing a large here but could have definitely sized down. Would be super cute with skinny jeans for a night out, but I don't really need more of those shirts, so it's going back. If you're interested, it's currently 40% off!

Last one is a shirt I'm on the fence about! I've never really been interested in the tie-in-front blouses but something about this Madewell one made me want to try it! It's actually really cute - the fabric is 100% cotton and not sheer. The fit is also spot on, and is true to size. I think it would look so good with some distressed jeans in the spring! I almost feel like I need to come up with a few outfits for it because I really do like it! It's also 40% off if you are interested in it!

day in the life: labor & delivery

This is a "typical" day in the life of a third year ObGyn resident. As always, details have been changed or omitted.

5:07 // My alarm isn't supposed to go off for another 23 minutes, but Penny doesn't really care about alarms and wants to nurse and cuddle now. I scoop her out of her pack n plan, and nurse and hold her for the next 25 minutes before putting her back down to sleep. Chris will get up in about an hour and get himself and the baby ready, and will take her to daycare.

5:35 // After brushing my teeth and washing my face, I put on my make-up (powder, bronzer, blush, eyeliner, eyebrow pencil, and mascara), throw in some dry shampoo, and get dressed.

6:05 // I go downstairs, let the dogs out, and pack my bag. I pack my pumping parts, my HelloFresh left overs I made last night for lunch, a few snacks, and my computer. I then drive the quick 10 minutes down the road to the hospital.

6:20 // I arrive to our call rooms a few minutes before sign out, and chat with the night float residents. I then put my pumps on so I can pump during sign out since the next time I'll be able to is after our first c-section, which is too far away to wait. I then print my patient list, and join the night team and the oncoming day team, as well as our medical students and attending, in our education room.

6:30 // During morning sign out, the night team tells us about any new antepartum admissions and changes to our patients on the antepartum floor - these are patients whose waters broke early, who have high blood pressures we are monitoring, or who need closer observation in the hospital. Then we get sign out on the laboring patients, and then any complicated postpartum issues, like blood pressure problems, postpartum hemorrhages, or any other unique situations we all need to know about. After that, the night team gets to go home, and the day team stays for morning education. This morning we read about preterm prelabor rupture of membranes. As senior residents, it's our job to lead education, make sure our junior residents know the most important parts of the information, and also answer any questions.

7:15 // I go see our postpartum clinic patients, and then we do our first scheduled clinic c-section for the day. On the floor, the intern does the majority of the c-sections with either a private attending for their patients, or with a senior resident if it's one of our clinic patients. Today we are doing a repeat c-section and deliver a healthy baby girl!

8:30 // After the c-section, I go back to our call room and check up on how the laboring patients are doing, and get sign out about our patients who came in for inductions. Then I make my breakfast and coffee. I've been slowly getting back into intermittent fasting so I've been fasting 13 hours overnight. I make homemade oatmeal (I just mix a container of quick oats with chia seeds, coconut, pecans, and cinnamon) and an iced coffee. Then I pump again.

09:30 // I see a couple of triage patients with our family medicine resident (who spends 6 weeks with us on L&D to learn the ropes around here). A patient comes in through triage 10 cm dilated, so we got immediately to a labor room and have our second birthday party of the day.

11:45 // Another couple of triage patients later, and it's time for lunch! We have been HelloFresh customers for about a year now, and it's made such a difference in our lives. We don't always have time to get a bunch of groceries, come up with new recipes to try, and be motivated enough to make new meals all the time. HelloFresh has kind of solved all those issues for us! We get the 4 meal versions and that gives us enough for lunches the next day or another dinner the next day. I made this prosciutto wrapped chicken, broccoli, and mashed potatoes last night, and I'm so glad I brought lunch from home because we don't usually have time to leave the floor to go to the cafeteria. Having our HelloFresh subscription has saved me from a lot of PB&J cracker lunches ;) After eating, I pump for the third time.

12:00 // We see a few more patients in triage for complaints of contractions, someone thinking their water broke, and ruling out pre-eclampsia, which are generally our top complaints coming through triage. One of the patients gets admitted to our antepartum floor for blood pressure management.

13:30 // We go back for our second c-section and tubal for the day, this time for twins!

14:45 // And our third vaginal delivery of the day. Afterwards, we have a patient with uncontrolled blood pressures, so we spend a lot of time getting them under control. Then I go pump for the last time of the day. That's 4 pumping sessions and about 10 oz total for Penny. I don't love pumping but am happy I can do something of her while at work.

15:30 // Our laboring patients are still in the early stages of labor, so I take some time to read for tomorrow. I've been trying to take notes on the readings we do every night so that I can organize my thoughts for both education, and for preparation for our written boards that I take next summer. This reading is on anticoagulation management in pregnancy and labor.

16:30 // Last delivery of the day!

17:30 // We go back to our education room to sign out back to the night team.

17:50 // I walk out of the hospital and drive to get Penny from daycare!

18:00 // Penny is having a great time at daycare, playing with some of her little classmates. I just love seeing her expression when she seems me and how excited she gets! I live for her little arms curling around my neck. I pack up her things and we head out the door.

18:15 // We get home, let the pups out and throw her bottles into some soapy water to be cleaned later tonight. Then I nurse Penny, and then we play for a bit!

18:45 // Chris gets home, and I start making dinner. I'm thankful for some of the "quick meals" from HelloFresh that take 20 minutes to make. Some days I just want to spend less time cooking and more time eating and being with my family! This time we are making pulled pork tacos that's topped with a sweet and vinegar slaw and a hot sauce crema. It really did take no longer than 20 minutes to make and they were so good. Penny had a little bit of the pulled pork and loved it! And now I have lunch for tomorrow too.

19:30 // Chris cleans up the dishes, and I take the baby up to take a bath. Now that she's a bit older and can sit independently, we typically take baths together, which I love! She gets to splash around, we get to still play and be together, and both get clean - really it's a win-win. After her bath, Chris comes and grabs her and gets her ready for bed and reads a book, while I take a shower.

20:15 // I nurse Penny to sleep, put her down in her little bed, and then join Chris downstairs to watch a little Netflex while he chart preps. In his third year of residency, he spends the majority of his days in his outpatient clinic, which means he does a lot of pre-charting the evening before, and documenting his visits after. I don't really have as much at home work to do, which is nice!

21:30 // I brush my teeth and go to bed. Penny wakes up around 01:30 to nurse, and luckily goes back to bed. Chris came to bed sometime in there. Another day down!

Penny turns 9 months old today! That is wild. She has just grown so much in the last few months - she now has opinions and makes them known! She's really starting to enjoy eating real foods, is working on crawling, can almost pull herself up on things, and can actually spend a little bit of time entertaining herself. This is such a fun age! Compared to previous months, some of our favorite items revolved more around toys than practical items - but that's what makes it so fun!

Teething Tubes // I kept seeing ads for these teething tubes and once Penny's first teeth started popping through, I figured why not. Turns out she loves her little teething tube! She is constantly chewing on it and playing with it and slobbering all over it. They are made out of silicone, are easily cleaned in soapy water, and overall a hit! Penny is working on some of her back teeth now and is obsessed more than ever before.

Board Books // Instead of cards for our baby shower, we received books, so we have an awesome little library for Penny...but six months in, I realized that both Penny and I really enjoyed the board books with stories, rather than just pictures. She likes turning the pages, and I like having something to actually read! A few of our favorites are the Pout Pout Fish (the original is the best but some of the other ones are cute too), Giraffes Can't Dance, Love from Me to You, and Courageous People Who Changed the World. Currently in our Amazon basket we have Llama Llama Red Pajama, If Animals Kissed Goodnight, and The Little Blue Truck. Any other favorites we should add?

Bapron // The last three months have been a whole new world of eating for Penny. We are doing half and half purees and baby led weaning - she gets purees at daycare and a bit at home, and then we generally give her adult food that's appropriate for her to try as well. That can get messy quick. I love our little baby apron! It's great for messier foods as it covers a bit more of her clothes, it's easily washed in the sink, and dries quickly. Plus the patterns they have are so cute!

Magnetic Stacking Bear // This was a random instagram buy from Manhatten Toys that Penny LOVES. It's her favorite toy. She likes banging the pieces together, biting the parts, knocking stacks we make over, and talking to the little bear head. I like that it's a wood toy with non-toxic finishes that is easily cleaned off with soap and water. This would be a cute Easter present!

Sensory Teether // Teething is obviously a big theme for this age - I found this toy at Target and Penny held on to it the whole rest of the shopping trip. The soft tubes must feel good on her little gums and the different colors and parts keep her entertained. Plus again, it's easily washable!

Stokke Highchair // I spent a lot of timing research high chairs - different styles, sizes, colors, everything! Everything kept pointing towards the Stokke high chair. I loved the minimalistic design, the fact that it grows with the baby from infant to childhood, that it's fairly easily cleaned, and that it has a foot rest for the baby so it sits in a more natural position for eating. I saved a Visa giftcard we received after Penny was born and used a 20% off coupon to make the price tolerable for us. We are very happy with this purchase!

Leather Moccasins // This is kind of a random item in the list since I haven't included other baby clothing, but we just love these little moccasins. They are very similar to the Freshly Picked mocs but for like half the price. Our first sets were a little gold set and a blush set and she wears them every day. Penny loves to pull her socks off her feet, so having soft shoes on makes it harder for her to bare her little feet! Plus I think they are just adorable - they even have ones with red bottom soles!

Building Blocks // I've been a huge Bannor Toys fan since Penny was born - I got her a teether soon after she was born she plays with every day! For Christmas, I got both her and her cousin a set of their wood and silicone blocks. We play with these every single day! They are fun for us since we can build her little buildings or stacks and she gets to knock them over, she can chew on the blocks, and bang them together. I know this is something that she will grow with over the next few years, and it's probably my biggest recommendation on this list!

I’m considering a career change into medicine after 11 years out of college. I have two young kids (3yr and 3mo old) - any tips for the transition? Thoughts on med school v. PA or nursing? Am I completely crazy to think about doing this with a young family and at age 33?!?

I do not think you are crazy at all! I think first things you have to think about is how you see yourself working in health care. While doctors and nurses both work in the same environment, their roles (and education) are very very different. Becoming a full fledged doctor comes with another few years of getting the pre-reqs, 4 years of medical school, and at least another 3 years of training - along with that comes $150-$300k in debt, as well as very little flexible time during most of the 5+ years of clinical work. Maybe PA school would be a great in between - it's 2 years of school and no required training after, you'll make great money, and very likely have more flexibility in balancing your home life and work life than you would as a resident/young attending. I see many women on instagram about my age who have children about Penny's age who now are working part time, a luxury I can't have. There are SO many more things that go into this, as I don't know you, but those are just some of my rambling thoughts!

After my third vaginal child birth, I discovered I have a prolapse and after seeing my obgyn was referred to a pelvic floor physical therapist. I've since been discovering a lot on my own too about pelvic floor health and I'm a little annoyed that I knew nothing about it before/during pregnancy. There seems to be a disconnect between obgyns and pelvic floor health. I feel like I'm backtracking when more could've been done preventatively if I'd been made aware by my doctor. Any comments on this being an obgyn? Appreciate it! :)

There is definitely a disconnect and it's really a shame we don't get more training or have more understanding of pelvic floor therapy in residency. We had one lecture last year, and I have myself referred a few people to pelvic floor therapy, but couldn't really tell you much about what goes in there. Would love to hear more about what you learned by going to pelvic PT!

Can we see pictures of your closet? Do you have a wardrobe inventory? I have a small reach in closet and it’s a mess and I’m struggling with what to wear and the “I have nothing to wear” Syndrome with a stuffed closet and don’t know how to start. Advice?

I also have a small reach in closet! Here's a picture from a few years ago, not much has changed in the general lay out. Since I've basically moved every 2 years for the last 10+ years (this is the longest I've ever been in one house!), I was constantly going through my closet and editing it down. I still feel at times like I too have nothing to wear, but I know that's not true, and just go for my tried and true favorites. I wrote a whole series a while back about building a cohesive wardrobe, which included a post about cleaning out your closet so you can start fresh. I hope that helps!

Well January came and went! This month was a busy one, I was back on L&D, which always makes for long days. We also took our inservice exam, and I interviewed for my first attending job! This month I'm on GYN, which involves lots of surgeries, and ED/hospital consults.
I'm going to Scottsdale at the end of February with my class for a conference, and need all the suggestions! We have been there once, so I can't wait to be back, but it's been a few years, so any food/drink/experience recommendations you have, I'd love to hear them!

Aerie Cloud Sherpa Oversized Pullover review

Hi!

Man you guys, this month has been something. I'm back on L&D for the month, which is always busy. We also had our annual inservice exam last week, I've worked 2 of the 4 weekends, and I have my first interview for my first attending job (how are we here already?!..didn't I just write this post?). Needless to say, all of that combined with the baby, I've hardly been on my computer.

But I did want to pop in quick today to share my favorite clothing item I've purchased recently. I happened upon this amazing sherpa pullover when I accidentally opened a marketing email (I almost always just delete all of them) and 5 minutes later, was entering my credit card to order it for myself.

I own several sherpa sweaters and pullovers and you guys, this is the best one yet. The problem I've had with almost all sherpa sweaters is that they are amazingly soft and fluffy on the outside...but then are scratchy and uncomfortable on the inside. Not this one though, it's "cloud" name really lives up to how it feels. It's soooo soft on both the inside and outside, and is therefore just so nice to wear. I've been wearing it every chance I get!

Couple of things on sizing. I ordered my normal size large. Reviews say it runs a little large and I agree with that, so if you are between sizes, maybe size down. It is also a bit boxier than like a Patagonia or LLBean sweater, so something to also be mindful of. As you can see above it has dolman style sleeves. It is a bit longer in the back, which is great if you, like me, like your butt covered when wearing leggings. As far as colors go, I have it in natural...but now I'm also considering ordering the basketweave color. I just think it would look so cute with some distressed jeans.

This Aerie sherpa is on sale today for $30, which is the cheapest I've seen it (it was $40 when I ordered it). I think I'm going to get that basketweave color and these distressed jeggings!

Certain inflammatory infections can cause fistulas, or tracts, to develop between organs that aren't supposed to be connected, like the colon to the uterus.
Friendly health reminders: make sure your pap smears are up to date. Talk to your parents about their health conditions so you can tell your doctors about them (especially cancers in your family!). Bleeding after menopause is not normal, see your doctor immediately if that happens. Get your flu shot. Stay healthy out there, love you, mean it.

I'm slowly beginning the process of finding my first real physician job out of residency (18 more months until I'm done!), which includes lots of meet-and-greets, tours, interviews, and dinners. Unlike medical school and residency interviews, I plan on actually dressing in clothes I like and feel comfortable in, like this neutral and modern blazer, which I plan on pairing with a simple white top and my new work pants.
I know it's not really for this season of life, but I can't help but want this belt bag. I just imagine it with a black t shirt dress and cognac sandals and wearing it all summer long as my summer uniform...clearly planning for six months from now ;)
There's just something about the black and white print on this shirt that I'm dying to try. I think it would look darling tucked into higher waisted jeans!

Penny is officially six months old, and we are slowly introducing new foods! We are doing a combo of babyled weaning while still eating some purees. Both are a big messy, but we have been loving this adorable BapronBaby apron. How cute is that pattern? It also keeps her clothes clean, which is a huge plus.
Baby clip dot fabric and ballerinas? Buying immediately.
I know snap-up pjs are a pain, but I just love the little metallic heart print on this pair.

I know you have LL Bean boots, and the fleece quarter and the quilted quarter zip. I have the first two after your recommendations and love them also! What else do you own from LL Bean?

Those are pretty much the items I own! My most worn are the quarter button fleece and the quilted quarter zip (they now have a pink version I definitely want). I also have a sherpa pullover that no longer is sold (they do have a quarter zip version I like almost more). I'd really like to own their 3-in-1 coat though, although it's pretty pricy.

Are you you still spinning at home? How has your bike held up? Looking into this option myself!

I haven't just because I'm short on time - I'd really love to get back into it, I think about it quite often. I loved my at home spin work outs, I always felt amazing doing them and after. Chris still does them and the bike (our homemade peloton) is holding up amazing!

Would you consider doing an updated video tour of your home?

Happy New Year's Eve! We are in Rochester for the long weekend, celebrating a delayed Christmas with my husband's family, as well as the new year. It's been so nice to have these days at home with Penny before starting a busy six months of work.
This month I spent the month with our breast surgeon. ObGyns are very often the doctors who find breast cancer, either through yearly exams (have you had yours? Make it your goal for early 2020 to see your friendly neighborhood gynecologist) or through screening imaging, so it's been very insightful to see what happens once lumps are found. It also makes me hate that the organ we use to feed our babies can turn on us and try to kill us. Cancer is just so cruel.
Penny is in such a fun age right now! She's so interactive and smily and starting to move around more. We are also starting the babyled weaning process of feeding her more foods, which has been so fun to see her trying new foods and becoming more coordinated.

penny favorites: 3-6 months

Penny turned six months (half a year!!!) old this past weekend, and I can't believe my little baby is already half way through her first year. The time goes so quickly! It has been such a joy watching the leaps and bounds she's grown mentally and physically over the past three months - she's like a real interactive human now rather than our little newborn.

As first time parents, we have been trying to be mindful of what we buy for Penny while still trying to figure out what we and she needs. I can easily fall into the trap of buying buying buying - first of all, baby things are so cute and second, I'm trying to figure out what makes our lives easier, and what she likes to play with. Especially as she grows older and actually plays with things, we are trying to stick with more organic materials and less battery operated. I also don't want so much stuff that we don't know where to put it or worse, end up throwing away a bunch of stuff, so we (ok, I) am trying to hold myself back from buying all the things.

I shared our baby favorites from 0-3 months, so here are the items we all have loved and used over and over again for our now 6 month old!

Sakura Bloom Ring Sling // We loved loved loved our Solly wrap for the newborn phase - I babywore Penny every day. But as she grew older, she became a lot less interested in being all snuggled up, and wanted to look around. We received the Sakura ring sling recently, and we have loved still baby wearing (and having free hands!) while letting her look around. I feel it's slightly less secure than the Solly wrap, so I mostly still support her with one hand, but it takes a load off my arms, which is definitely a big plus. I know moms who still use theirs with their 2-3 year olds, so I'm excited to get a lot of use of this for the next few years!

ABCs of Biology // Okay, maybe I'm a bad parent for saying this, but I think most baby books are a bit boring (except the Pout Pout Fish, which is a personal favorite to read). I initially purchased this book as a present for a friend, but after reading it to Penny, I purchased it for ourselves. The book has bright pictures for the baby, but with information captions for the parents to read - all in all, a book I've enjoyed reading to her over and over again without getting super bored. There's also the ABCs of Science, ABCs of Math, ABCs of Engineering, ABCs of Quantum Physics...I think I'm going to need the ABCs of Space pack!

Teether toy // I used to see these teethers on a pacifer clips and not really understand the point of them...until my own baby started to sprout teeth at 4.5 months, and now I get it. Penny is obsessed with her little polar bear (we call him Charles the Chew Bear) and I love that she has a silicone teether that I don't constantly have to pick off the floor. We got ours at a local boutique (the brand also has an Etsy shop) but there are tons of cute options out there, from sloths to llamas to sushi! This is one of those "trying to be mindful" situations because I want to get all sorts of cute ones (hello, adorable watermelon!) when in reality she only really needs one, and she doesn't care what it looks like. This would also make for a really cute baby shower present, like on top of the present with a bow!

Baby Paper // I can't remember where I learned about Baby Paper, but for $6, I ordered one off Amazon and you guys...Penny loves this thing probably more than she loves me. She has spent an hour straight just stuffing this thing in her mouth and crinkling it. I keep it on my baby-designated purse and pull it out when we are in stores or eating and she just gets so excited. Cheap and super effective - a win win in the baby toy world!

Avanchy spoons // We started with purees when Penny was around four months old. We are now doing a combo of purees and baby-led weaning, and have really enjoyed using the Avanchy spoons. They have a silicone mouth piece with a bamboo handle. Penny is now helping us feed her by grabbing the handle and bringing the spoon to her mouth, and chewing on the mouth piece (I think the silicone feels good on her gums). We also purchased one of their suction cup bowls that we haven't used yet, but will probably get good use out of in the next month or so as we let her explore more of "adult" foods.

Baby Bjorn bouncer // My in-laws have this amazing bouncer from when my husband was a baby that Penny loved being in - it has a little toy bar in front of it and she happily played with it for fairly long stretches of time. Obviously they don't make that version from thirty years ago, but when I started researching current versions, all reviews pointed towards the Baby Bjorn bouncer. Now, brand new this thing costs $200+, which seems very steep for a metal frame with a piece of fabric on it. I actually found ours second hand on Facebook Marketplace, which is where I would suggest starting out. We got ours for $50! I did end up purchasing the toy bar to go in front of it new, but we have just loved this bouncer that I would say it's the number one item on this list. The bouncer itself is super light and foldable, so you can tuck it away behind the couch or in the closet (my husband loves this feature), and can easily move it all over the house, so you can use it in the kitchen while making dinner, in the living room while folding laundry, and in the bedroom as you get ready. It's also easily washable, which is great if you are buying second hand or just have a messy baby. Penny also enjoys sitting in it as she gets to sit up, and has something right in front of her to play with. We are so happy with item!

Bibs with teethers // Are we noticing a trend? So many of our favorite items include something for my poor baby's gums. She started becoming super drooly around four months, to the point where our daycare would have to change her outfits because she was soaking her shirts. Our daycare also doesn't allow the teethers on the clips, so finding these teethers on the bibs was a great compromise! It protects her clothes from all that slobber, and gives her something to chew on. Plus I love the pretty floral patterns!

Kyte Sleep Sack // We started the transition out of swaddles around ten weeks of age, first by taking one arm out, then a week later unswaddling the other arm, and then for another two weeks just using the velcro swaddles like a sleeping bag that still gave her that "chest pressure" secure feeling. We tried a few different sleep sacks but I really fell for the Kyte sleep sacks. They are made of the softest bamboo fabric and come in the prettiest colors. We own the 0-6 month size in the 1.0 and 2.5 TOG. The sizes are pretty generous, I think we will probably end up using this size for at least several more months as she isn't anywhere close to outgrowing it. You can order directly from their website, which has a lot more options for colors and sizes, or on Amazon and get free shipping with Prime. The reviews on Amazon aren't great, but we have had no issues with our sleep sacks, and have been using them for three months now. If you like the brand, you can also join their facebook group and get early access to their sales, which is great because the items are pretty pricy.

Pipette Balm // Penny started developing some eczema around three months of age. We switched to Baby Dove's wash for bath time, and then started using this Pipette balm after, and her skin cleared up in days! I think having fragrance/dye free really made a difference for her, so we will be sticking with that combo. The balm is really so nice to apply after her bath and helps seal in moisture, especially during these dry-air winter times. I kind of want a bigger tube to use for myself...

We now have a six month old who will probably be on the move soon - would love to hear any suggestions you have for the age group we are moving in to! From play mats to items for learning to eat, to favorite books to read!

About a year ago, I was half way through my second trimester in pregnancy, and realized that I hadn't cooked a meal in weeks. I was still in the exhaustion part of pregnancy, I was on busy services, and couldn't find the motivation to drive to the grocery store or meal prep. By saving your family member a trip to the grocery story, and instead just bringing one box in the house from their front steps, so much of the work is taken out of making a meal that it's perfect for that new parent or overworked sibling.

the uninspired co-worker // I've been cooking for myself for about 12 years now...which means I have like five standard meals I make over and over...and over again. I occasionally looking through pinterest for new recipes, but a lot of time they require buying new spices or dishes or items not available in all stores. HelloFresh gives you exactly what you need in those exact quantities, while at the same time always coming up with new recipes and teaching new cooking techniques. I've learned how to quick pickle veggie toppings, make crema sauces out of three ingredients, and combine ingredients I would never have though of combining. I'm learning and eating new and exciting meals, rather than the same five things I always cook.

the hard to shop for mother-in-law // I think we all can agree we all probably own too much stuff, but the holidays revolve around getting each other things. I've slowly tried to gear my gift buying towards either practical items people actually want, or experiences. What is your biggest advice for someone planning on going to medical school?

This is a tough one to answer because there are so many ways to approach this question. My biggest advice for someone who wants to go into medicine? Explore all other fields to make sure being a doctor is the thing you want - there are so many other jobs in medicine and the medical field, from optometry to dentistry to pharmacy to nursing to social work to technicians, that you want to make sure the sacrifice and time that comes with becoming a physician is exactly what you want. My biggest advice for a pre-med? Start volunteering early and find something you are passionate about - doing something long term means a lot more than doing a bunch of little things, and it gives you something to talk about during interviewed. Tips for just getting into medical school? Apply broadly, and be persistent.

I'm a social worker interviewing for a student wellness coordinator position at a medical school. I really enjoyed following you through your med school journey and I think it's given me a great insight into the joys and stresses of student life - so thanks! I know it's been a couple of years, but I'm curious - were there any resources, education or programming offered by your school that helped you stay sane and maintain wellness? If not, what would you have liked to have seen/known?

Ohhh, such an interesting question! I think one of the biggest thing that would have made a difference is probably something you can't control, which was that we took exams every Monday...which meant that every single weekend was spent studying. It would have been so nice to at least have 1 Friday exam/month so you know you got some free time...but probably not something you can control from your position! Wellness has become such a big topic in medicine...and I know everyone is doing the best at providing events and resources to students and residents, but so much of being well (or unwell) is from the stress of the job that can't be solved with free breakfasts or yoga events. I wish I had a better answer and something that you can provide for your students, but the unwell in medicine is so inherent to the job that the whole game needs to change before people are really well.

I know on Instagram you mentioned compression socks you love. I tried looking for them so i didn’t have to message you but I probably didn’t look hard enough.

Happy December! This was supposed to be posted over the weekend but my husband worked all weekend and I was home with the baby alone and I forgot my charger at work and basically I just spent all weekend holding my baby and I know you'll forgive me for posting a day late (kidding, I know no one was holding their breath waiting for this post). I'm still trying to figure out how to occasionally blog while focusing on work and my family. I also don't want to fall back into the trap of just ordering a bunch of clothes to try on, even though they are always my most popular posts. Just the never ending battle of trying to find some kind of balance point in life!
This month was so good! I was on UroGyn, which deals a lot with urinary incontinence and pelvic reconstruction and I learned so much. I feel so much more comfortable talking with and managing incontinence, something that is extremely common but not something a lot of women talk about, and I'm excited to now have a better understanding of how to help my patients. So not only did I learn a ton, but I also had fairly normal people hours this month, which meant more time home with Penny, so that was amazing.
As someone who is very typically a last minute present buyer, I'm trying real hard to stay ahead this year! I already got Chris's gift (...because we are buying the Nintendo Switch together so we can play MarioKart hahahaha), and my dad's and my Secret Santa's for Chris's family. Feeling accomplished while taking advantage of all these Black Friday deals!

postpartum review: learning to dress your new body

Hello! Coming at you today with a review of items I've purchased over the last month or so. We have a little random assortment of items here, from maternity items (that I wear as a non-pregnant lady), nursing tops, slipping pants, and winter jackets. A little bit of everything! A big lesson for me is now learning how to dress my "new" body. My chest is a bit bigger, my sides are a bit softer, and I'm working on figuring out what feels good when I wear it. I'm also trying to figure out what I can wear that accommodates nursing/pumping, which has definitely had it's trials and errors. What used to work doesn't always work with pumps on, and what I used to wear casually on the weekends isn't convenient for nursing in public, so it's been a rough go at figuring out what works for me!

For reference, I'm 5'9''. I'm currently a size 12/large in most items.

Okay, starting off with my favorite item in this post. Gap is currently having an amazing 40% off everything + an additional 10% off sale, so I wanted to share this first! I actually own very few nursing tops - as most of my tops are on the looser side, and I only nurse in casual situations (ie I don't nurse at work), I have found that most of the clothes I own can easily just be lifted up on one side and can nurse pretty discretely. But as winter, and therefore more layers, approach, I have found it a bit more difficult to just lift up a top and nurse. I came across this drapey cardigan and ordered it on the spot. You guys...even if you aren't pregnant or nursing...this cardigan is awesome. It's soft, it's long, it has a flattering hemline, the drapey neck is cool and different without being weird...and if you happen to be nursing, it's also conveniently open for easy access. I honestly love it so much that I'm going to order it in black as well. I got it in a large, and think it's true to size, maybe just a tiny bit on the larger side.

Sticking with the Gap purchases, anything that's striped, popover, and boyfriend style, and I'm in. I purchased this in a tall medium, which was my usual pre-baby size, but definitely didn't really account for the nursing chest and squishy midsection I currently have (this is not a complaint, but more of a reality of where my body currently is 4 months postpartum). I wish I had purchased it as a tall large instead. Maybe I'll re-order it during this great sale...and then add on the white striped popover as well ;)

Next is a coat I also talked about on Instagram because I was debating getting the pink version...and then my more sensible side reminded myself that I would never wear a pink coat. Anyway, this is a Kenneth Cole wool coat that has a funnel style collar and asymmetric front. Reviews said to size down, so I'm wearing a medium here. Overall this is a fine coat...I just didn't love it. Even though it's $140 on sale, I found that it looked kind of cheap? Like you can see the hidden button areas on the front, which why have hidden buttons if you can see where they attach? I also don't really need another "nicer" coat - I only wear dress clothes once in a while, and I find that I also reach for my more casual coats anyway. If this were under $100, I think I would maybe get the pink version just to have ONE fun coat that isn't grey/black/tan, but for now, I'll stick with my boring coat closet.

You have probably seen this sweater all over instagram - I swear I've now seen it on like 14 girls. I first saw it on Pinteresting Plans, and ordered it in two colors immediately. When will I learn that what looks good on really long lean posing girls on the internet may not work on me? First of all, this sweater is stupid expensive...because it's Free People, and that's just how it is. It really does feel nice on though - the fabric is a cotton/nylon combo that's heavy without being bulky. It's a tunic, which is what I wanted, so points for it covering my butt. The neckline is okay, maybe it's just sitting a bit weird on me because it just came out of the box, but it's slightly different and I like that. It has dropped shoulder sleeves, which are awful and should be banned from all clothing. The middle of the sweater has just a bit too much fabric, which makes me feel bulky - again, something that the slimmer girls may not struggle with but I prefer something a little more fitted when it's all oversized so I don't totally get lost in there. Overall, this is not a bad sweater. It can be cute, and style appropriately, I could love it...but for the price, I want to love it all the time, and not for a perfectly posed instagram picture.

Next are four tops, with one basically worse than the next on me, so this is going to be quick. First is the BP sweater above. At under $40, and in a color I usually love, I was hoping that this would be a win...but it's awful on me. I took it out of the package and honestly questioned what I was thinking. The neckline is awful on me - it just makes me look so square! The fabric is thin and flimsy and that weird knit that we used to wear in the 90s. Maybe this looks good on other people, but it was a big no for me. I'm wear a size large.

Okay, so this Caslon turtleneck tunic isn't terrible, but it's not great either. At around $70, it's pretty expensive for how thin this is - you can see right through it! The model online makes this look much thicker and cozier than it is. Really that's my biggest complaint - the neckline is fine, I like the length, I don't even hate the weird line in the middle...it's just too thin. I'm wearing it in a large.

I have to wear business casual to work a bit more often over the next few months, so I wanted a few new tops for work, since the majority of tops I own are still from when I was in medical school. How do you argue with a top called the perfect blouse? Well, first of all, it's a bit ridiculous to charge $90 for a 100% polyester blouse. On top of that, this just doesn't fit me that well. I think if I was currently less endowed, this would be a fine blouse for work (but not for that price). I actually really like the sleeves and the flattering neckline. Don't love the wear pleating by the shoulders and the awkward length it hits me on my waist - tucked in it looks fine though. I would be willing to pay like $40 for this top, but since it's more than double that...it's going back.

Next is a top from Amazon. I'm not a big Amazon clothing shopper - there's SO much stuff on there, and I don't even know where to start. But after I found that LL Bean dupe sweater, I went to see what else that brand sells, and found this top. Quickly glancing at it in this picture, it's a fine shirt. But in real life, it is like the cheapest feeling shirt I've ever tried on - it's like polyester x 100 - I felt like I was wearing a plastic bag. For $20, I wasn't expecting like the nicest shirt ever...but this was just awful. Cute pattern though!

The last item is one that may look somewhat familiar to you if you follow along on instagram, as I actually own in this already in black stripes! I bought this shirt when I was pregnant on a whim...and I ended up loving it. It's like a magical shirt because even though it's technically a maternity shirt, it also fits me like a normal shirt now that I'm no longer pregnant! It doesn't have any ruching on the side or a bunch of extra fabric in the front, so it's perfect for being an undercover maternity shirt that I can still wear postpartum. Because it's a bit looser, it's great for nursing as well. I just loved it so much that I bought it in the red stripes as well. I have it in a size large and find it fits true to size. I love all the Seraphine items and really wish I had purchased this adorable sweater when I was pregnant because I think it's the cutest. Maybe next time ;)

I'm so excited to talk a bit about a few recent beauty favorites from the last six months. I have lots of holy grail items I've been using for years (my eyeliner, powder foundation, and dry shampoo, which currently comes with an extra mini bottle fyi) but I do love playing around with new items and finding new favorites. With Sephora's holiday sale starting today, I thought it would be a good time to share a few of the items I've really grown to love!

Amika Purple Shampoo // As a life long (highlight getting) blond, I only started using purple shampoos like two years ago! They make SUCH a difference! My highlights/balayage stays brighter so much longer. I've tried several different brands at different price points, and this has been my favorite - the actual shampoo is thick and a deep purple, lathers nicely for a sulfate-free shampoo, and one bottle lasts me about six months. For $20, I can't really complain! If you want a drug store conditioner, I've been using L'Oreals Ever Pure conditioner for years and really like it!

Beauty Pie's Vitamin C capsules // I have plans to dedicate a whole blog post about my experience with Beauty Pie in the next month or so (I'm putting in an order for a few more products on Saturday when my monthly membership renews), but I've already found several items I absolutely love. I've been a long time fan of Vitamin C products - they have helped lighten up my acne scarring and keep my skin looking refreshed (here's a more in depth article about the benefits of Vitamin C). I've enjoyed the Paula's Choice serum as well as Kiehl's, but Vitamin C is fairly unstable and needs to be in sealed and dark containers, which is why these individual shells is the perfect storage for this serum! I use it every morning under my moisturizer. I've been using it for two months now, and am re-ordering another bottle this weekend. It's my favorite skincare product of the last year! Hourglass's Ambient Light powder // I first heard about this on Jaclyn Hill's youtube, and finally broke down last year, and bought the mini version. I ended up using it every day, and a few months ago bought the full size version. I use this on light make up days (ie at work) as an eyeshadow base, and then lightly swiped across my cheeks and nose as a light highlight. It's just so pretty and the regular size is going to last forever (I wish I had just purchased the full size from the get go - a mini is 1.4 oz for $24, and for $48, you get 10 oz!). Love love love. This would also make a great present!

Beauty Pie's Sleep Oil // I have been using face oils on and off for years now...but it turns out, I was using it ALL WRONG all that time! I was putting it on over serums and under moisturizer, but actually face oils don't moisturize your face, they lock in the moisture. derp. Anyway, since realizing my mistake, I've been happily using Beauty Pie's sleep oil correctly, and it's becoming my favorite step in my night time routine. I pat on a few drops all over my face and wake up with soft and glowy skin every morning. If you're thinking about trying out Beauty Pie, I'd definitely recommend this as one of your first purchases! A bottle probably lasts close to a whole year - I've been using it since August, and have barely made a dent in the bottle.

Ole Henriksen's Scrub // as a girl who grew up with St. Ive's apricot scrub, but also someone who has read enough posts about skincare to know that we shouldn't use abrasive scrubs, I can't help but really enjoy this scrub. I stopped using my retinol cream during pregnancy, and since restarting it after delivering Penny, my skin is going back through a bit of a shedding period while my skin gets re-used to the retinol. I find using this scrub just once a week, using very light circular motions rather than hard scrubbing it into my skin, gets rid of all the dead skin without causing a bunch of trauma to my skin. This would especially be great for anyone dealing with a lot of flakiness during the colder months! Again this will probably last quite a long time since you only need a little bit once or twice a week.

Kat Von D's eyeshadow palette // I've enjoyed KvD's eyeshadow palettes for years now, but this one has become a true staple for me. I am definitely not a make-up guru, I do basically the same thing every day, and have for basically a decade now, but this palette gives me everything I need from lighter every day looks to having a few darker colors to play with. The middle of the palette is what I use the most, from the base color to the highlight to the black for "smudging" my liquid eyeliner. And it's currently on sale (on top of the sale!), so you can get it for a steal.

Tarte's mascara // I'm forever looking for my holy grail mascara - I tend to use one kind for a few tubes, and then move on to the next. I prefer the brush mascaras (versus the plastic wands), and have found what I now believe is my favorite mascara to date. It just elongates, thickens, and isn't clumpy -it's like the holy trinity of mascaras! I always wear an eyelash primer under my mascaras, which helps, but am just such a fan of this mascara that I purchased several more during a recent Tarte sale!

Obstetrics and Gynecology actually has some of the coolest words in medicine. Laminaria is kelp, but it can be dried and made into a stick that when placed in the cervix, will slowly dilated over time, dilating the cervix for procedures like a D&C or IUD placement!
The word botulinum comes from the Latin word for sausage, after a botulism outbreak was associated with eating blood sausage! Thanks to @lifeasapa for that interesting piece of medical history!

If you have a family holiday photo shoot coming up, I think you need to wear these amazing tartan pants - pair it with a white or black blouse, and black accessories! Now I kind of want to take family pictures...
I bought this guazy blouse this month and just love it so much - I get to wear dress clothes the next few months to work, so I've already worn it twice! It's perfect for laying a long cardigan or scarf over (or wear with those tartan pants above!). Size down if you're in between sizes, mine is a medium!

Where did you buy the storage bins for baby clothing? I love the idea of sorting the different size baby clothes that way. I have a 3 month old baby boy and love seeing your recommendations.

Ours are from Target! They come in a pack of two, and are a good size for keeping clothes organized by age group - so far I've used 2 bins per age group we have. I figured it'll be great either for the next baby, or to loan to friends/family when they have babies!

I have a few friends graduating medical this year and am trying to come up with ideas for gifts for them. I remember somewhere you talking about the white engraved book you log your procedures in but I can't seem to find where it was that you talked about it. Do you know where it came from? Also do you have any other recommendations for good gifts for graduating medical students that would be more budget friendly (since I am still a medical student myself)?

Speaking of balance and life, for the next 9 weeks, I'm on what we call "off service" rotations, which basically means I'm not working on L&D or doing surgery daily, but spending time with various urogynecologists, doing some surgery, and spending time with the breast surgeons. It means later wake up times, earlier going home times, and just a small break from the grind! I'm already enjoying the fact that I get to see Penny more than an hour a day like I did last month when I was on MFM (which btw, day in the life post coming soon!).
Hope you guys are having a great Halloween! Penny is going to be a baby cow today (fitting for the baby of a WI girl, right?!) and I'll be here faithful farmer. I was going to be cheese, but procrastinated on buying a cheesehead ;)

LL Bean's Quilted Pullover vs the Amazon Dupe

While Patagonia is the new official uniform of residents everywhere, I've actually become quite the LL Bean wearer while at work! I just love LL Bean and their warm and comfortable clothing - I bought my quarter zip quilted sweater almost two years ago, and have worn it just about every other day since receiving it (even during pregnancy, until one of my coworkers told me I had to stop once my belly was sticking out too much haha).

I ran across a very similar looking sweater on Amazon and had to see how it compared to the original! I shared my original find some weeks ago on instagram, and received tons of follow up questions, so I figured a quick blogpost would be the best way to address the similarities and differences!

First up is the original, the LL Bean quilted quarter zip. I have it in a large in the color olive. The material is nice and thick, I'd say the thickness is similar to that of a Patagonia fleece. The front and back are quilted, has a kangaroo pocket, and a quarter zip front with a leather accent. The fit is slightly on the boxier side - for reference, I'm 5'9'', so most regular sized items tend to be a bit boxier on me. It does come in petites and plus size, but unfortunately not in talls (come on, LL Bean! Help a taller girl out). Like I said, I've owned this for almost two years with weekly laundering, and it has held up super well. Occasionally a little bit of the quilting pops out, but very rarely, and it's easily fixed with a quick snip of scissors. Here's a quick snap of it over scrubs.

The original price of almost $70 is pretty steep for a sweater, not going to lie. My cost per wear is pretty minimal at this point, and will continue to drop as I continue to religiously wear it. There is a sale currently for 20% off using the code BIG20 though, bringing the cost lower to $50! They also have a great funnel neck version of this same style that would be great outside of work that I'd love to try.

I ran across this dupe version on Amazon when I was looking at an Abercrombie fleece dupe (I really want the camel!!!), and since I've wanted the grey version of the LL Bean sweater, I figured this was the perfect $25 compromise.

Of course, I don't expect a sweater 1/3 of the cost of the original to be as nice in quality, and it's not, but that doesn't mean I don't like it. It's a much thinner material than the LL Bean one - it's almost like a very thick t-shirt material rather than a sweatshirt material. Only the front is quilted, as opposed to both sides like the LL bean one (you can see the back of it here). I think where the Amazon sweater wins is in length - it has a good 1.5 inches in length on the other sweater, which I really appreciate. It just sits a little nicer, especially when I'm wearing it with jeans/leggings as opposed to with scrubs.

I've been thinking about how I can say which one of these two is better, and it all depends on what you are looking for. If you want a thicker sweater that holds up well, comes in six great colors, and comes with the backing of the name LL Bean, then obviously the LL Bean sweater is the way to go - it really is the nicer of the two options. If you live in a warmer climate, are taller, or just want a $25 sweater instead of a $70 one, then Amazon has a great dupe, knowing that the quality isn't as nice.
