I love IFTTT and use it a lot. I also love to tinker with some web projects, and now I can combine both.

Integrating API's of services like Google Drive, Dropbox is somehow a pain. The maker channel from IFTTT is now the bridge to those and 193 more channels. This opens a lot of possibilities, from sending email, storing files, collecting data, opening garage doors etc.

I especially like that you can use the DO companion apps on your mobile phone to trigger events or even collect data for your own service.

Maker Channel
The Maker Channel allows you to connect IFTTT to your personal DIY projects. With Maker, you can connect a Recipe to any device or service that can make or receive a web request.

If you want to use Photoshop to generate automatically your assets for iOS or Android Development rejoice. The feature is gone in the new version of Photoshop.

It was flawed but just resigning is not really a good choice IMO.

There was a great discussion on how to improve the feature in the Adobe Forums, and it seems like that the resolution is to just kill the feature and announce it in the thread:

"FYI folks, this feature is now deprecated, we have released Export Options which tackles a smaller scope of problems of exporting. More info is available here: https://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/using/export-artboards-layers.html"

And no – the new feature is not really an enhancement.

Very good article that explains why larger text sizes on the web is better for both users and content providers.

You can clearly see the trend in the big content websites – the font sizes are getting bigger – and that's good. Even on mobile. Designers and readers are finally arrived at the point where they understand that using more space might just make the text easier to read and even faster to go through the content even though you have to scroll.

The race to provide the best features has begun … after Photo upload (now matched by other sync services) Dropbox is reaching again towards the creative users by buying the collaboration platform Pixelapse. I've tried it, and found it interesting but not ready for my workflow. Design review is hard – but if you can do it with a tool you already use it might get a better adoption than other tools.

It will up the "stickiness" of the dropbox service for sure – I am phasing dropbox out right now, but maybe it will be more attractive in one year time.

Finding relevant apps in the Google Play Store can be difficult. There is no real personalized recommendation in place and most App Recommendation Apps are based on chart positioning and downloads alone.

Here comes Paco – the first installment of a personalized recommendation app. Paco presents new apps that fit you because it analyzes the installed apps and your app usage. Every two hours you get 5 high quality apps that users with similar app profiles have. This allows the user of Paco to discover apps that might not be in any top chart, but still are relevant and useful. This happens all anonymously and the privacy of the user is save.

I had the opportunity to help design this App and shape the product features as well as art direct the character design and copy text.

Paco has character

A distinctive feature of Paco is it’s character. We created the story of the character first and then illustrated him. The design is centered around Paco as a character, he is not just a mere mascot in the app. He is portrayed as an App Expert who has built this app not only to help users find the right app, but also to express his opinion about the apps.

In fact, the most popular apps have witty app descriptions written by a comedian who impersonates Paco. All user interface texts are in the right tone for Paco – written in a way to be fresh and funny.

This was made as an effort to target a wider audience of non geeks that want to enjoy using an app – even if the main purpose is something utilitarian. But it also meant that we launched Paco only in Germany for the time being to guarantee the quality of the content.

The Paco App

The Paco Android App was designed to be a fun experience where the Paco Character could guide users and present the apps in a innovative way.

The apps are presented in packs of five and each app is shown in a way to showcase the visual aspects and the reason why Paco thinks this app is relevant or his general comment about the app. Going through the recommendations is done easily by swiping left or right and every two hours a new set of apps is ready.

Gone are specs, download stats and all the other clutter which can be seen once the user taps on the install button and gets redirected to the Google Play Store.

The official app description is present at the end of the screen so that users have a way to dig deeper if they want to. Our data shows that around 30% of users do look at the description to find out more about an app.

User tests have also shown that the simplified presentation helps in the decision process. Deciding to installing an app doesn’t need all the metadata presented in the official app stores. Validation that an app is good comes from the recommendation itself. The limitation to present only five apps is also an important factor – no more getting lost in endless lists.

The Paco Brand

We also made sure that Paco is perceived as a complete brand. The design of the app, the Play Store Assets, the website and the social media presence are coherent and express professionalism without being boring. To achieve that we embrace the the comic look of the character and pair it with modern typography and white space for a modern and adult look.

Part of the unique design language is also using the nonagon and similar shapes to set Paco apart from the omnipresent round avatar shapes seen on the web and in apps.

The combination of design, copy writing and functionality make Paco really unique at this point and I would like you to try Paco for yourself. At the moment it’s only available in german speaking countries (D A CH) but I will update this page when it becomes more widely available.

True to it's open source nature io.js is using the Github Issue tracker for design proposals. It's not too far from what I use every day, but seeing it out in the wild is cool.

It looks like there has been a change in Photoshop that makes it not recognize pen pressure anymore. After trying out various tips and tricks I came around http://forum.wacom.eu/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=19462.

To make it short – you have to create a custom config file and restart Photoshop.

Photoshop CC 2014 changes stylus use to use Microsoft system API’s, with these API’s you need to have Windows Ink enabled. These API’s give better stroke results and improve the out of the box experience for users using Windows tablet/convertible devices. If you want to go back to the old WinTab implementation of previous versions do the following:

Create a file that contains instructions to revert to the WinTab functionality.

Create a text file in a text editor such as Notepad.

Just realized today that I could "stabilize" a timelapse in Photoshop by adding a layer on top of the video groud and apply a layer mask.

How to make a timelapse in Photoshop is illustrated in a lot of articles online – but I have never seen this technique. It gives you some interesting creative options – like keeping the the foreground bright while the sky goes dark.

It gives the timelapse a cinemagraph look which is quite cool I think.

I use plenty of sync services – Dropbox, Google Drive, OneDrive and Creative Cloud – but all of those have one Problem – you can just sync what is inside one specific folder. But what if you want to keep App Settings in sync between computers?

Adobe is already stepping up and offers settings sync for Photoshop and Illustrator, but Lightroom settings are not available at the moment. So Bittorrent Sync came to mind.

Bittorrent Sync enables you to sync any folder you want to any number of computers – ideal. So what can you sync? Basically everything that is stored in the settings folders of Lightroom. You can find this folders by clicking on “Show Lightroom Presets Folder” which you can find in the Settings.

You should not sync the whole folder, but you can sync most of them. I sync these folders:

• Develop Presets
• Export Actions
• Export Presets
• Keyword Sets
• Local Adjustment Presets
• Locations
• Metadata Presets
• Smart Collection Templates

As you can see I added each folder as separately – so if you have more than one computer and you just share some folders you can do that as well.

How to setup folder sharing in Bittorrent Sync is actually very simple and you can read all about it here: http://help.getsync.com/

With this setup I can be sure that my workflow is in sync between my computers.

Some designers think that they are better story tellers than their clients – and mostly it's true. Most designers clients are not story tellers and don't know how to tell the story of their product or their brand. But people who tell stories for a living know what they are doing.

This teardown transforms a very clear messaging to a average plea for donations you can see on every non-profit on the net, on tv on the radio. We are inoculated against the whole "messaging centered around the consumer".

The messaging of serial is very clear and straight forward – no testimonial or cheesy pictures or background. If you are intrigued by the headline you read what motivated them – and then decide if it's worth your time and money. It's not about making listeners aware that there might be no more episodes – they know that because the same plea has been made in the show.

The designer would have known that and made other assumptions if he was a listener to the show. So please – the next time you redesign something into mediocrity – at least do better research.

The font DIN typeface family is inspired by the classic industrial German engineering designs, DIN 1451 Engschrift and DIN 1451 Mittelschrift. This font comes since 1995 from two different foundries. While Linotype has the original designs Fontshop made their interpretation with the aid of Albert-Jan Pool under the name FF DIN. FF DIN became quite popular because it had a few more widths and was optimized for graphic design.

Linotype on the other hand just launched their new DIN interpretation called DIN Next under the direction of Akira Kobayashi. In this new interpretation you find 25 fonts and 7 weights. An impressive re-work with many additional features. Find out more on the official website of Linotype.

I love Evernote, but not everyone does – it's big, you need an account for sharing notes etc. Google Keep is simpler and "leightweight" – or pre-installed if you are a Nexus user – so this is a no brainer for sharing simple Notes between me and my partner.

This is in my opinion huge … especially making Visual Studio free for small teams and supporting iOS and Android Development (although only Javascript/HTML at the moment). This will give .net Developers a chance to reach out to new audiences and create applications for multiple platforms.

I think that this will expand the variety of apps and it will be great for small/medium firms you have legacy software developed in .net and couldn't afford to start over from scratch. With this move they can port their software to Linux and Mac and maybe also extend into mobile apps.

The newly free Blackmagic Fusion will not only give Adobe some hard times – also established VFX Artist will be faced with a lot more competition in the future.

Making this professional software free for everyone will make it a defacto standard on which most new VFX Artists will train on. Sure you could pirate the software before for training – but then you had to choose between After Effects, Fusion and others. Now you will just try out first Fusion.

This will bring down salaries for VFX artists I imagine and push them to become even better, since just knowing a tool everyone can afford to learn isn't a distinguishing factor anymore.

BTW: A quick tip if you are wondering why Blackmagic Fusion 7.5 can't import/export MP4s – you need to have installed Apple's free Quicktime Player (might seem obvious, but on my freshly installed machine it wasn't)

Add a File to Multiple Folders in Google Drive without Copying

This is an awesome trick and it works great and can be very useful for logos and other files you might want to re-use and be sure that the correct version of the file is always used.

A couple of things I noticed:

* if you rename a file it will get renamed everywhere – so watch out.

* You cannot see in your normal file structure if the file is the original or a clone (reference). Help your future self by adding something to your filename – like "_universal" or "_xdrive"
* You can see all the instances of the file when you look at the details panel in the web version of Google Drive and eliminate single locations at will
