<itunes:summary>During the spring and summer for the past couple of years, I have been riding my bike to work. It's 10 miles each way and I ride about 3 times a week and it takes about 40 minutes, depending on the wind.nbsp; The reason I ride 3 times and not 4 or 5 is because apparently 60 miles is my testicular limit for bike riding. Any more than that and I am forced to walk around with an ice pack stapled to my gonadal area.nbsp; As with most things in my life, this is something for which my wife has very little sympathy. She claims it has something to do with the staples. I think it's really because she just doesn't have balls.

My top speed is around 26 mph. Even that was most likely downhill or with a good tailwind. Recently though, I set out at a respectable pace of 18 mph . So you can imagine my irritation when another biker passed me like I was standing still. He rode a Bianchi and had to be going at least 20 mph, which is pretty fast. Such a pace, while not unreasonable, is difficult to keep up for an extended period of time. So I increased my pace slightly to 19 mph, forcingnbsp;him to continue his 20 mph pace.nbsp;I did this to punish him for having the temerity to pass me.nbsp;I know from experience this can be a bit grueling and quickly, cramps will begin to set in.nbsp;

Whatever.nbsp; That's what he gets for passing me.

I continued close behind Bianchi guy. His head was down and his shoulders were hunched, concentrating on maintaining his pace as we approached the overpass at Kenton Ave. Up ahead I could see police and fire trucks had an area cordoned off with yellow tape just to the right of the bike lane. I knew what was coming so I slowed down. As I emerged on the other side of the underpass there, about 10 feet from the bike lane was a corpse. It laid on its back, bloated and lifeless. I couldn't quite make out the face, the police were just covering it up as I passed by.

At the next block, Bianchi guy was stopped at a red light, gasping for breath. "Did you see the dead body back there?" I asked, coasting to the line. "No!" he said, looking back in surprise. I understood. When one is concentrating very hard to keep a pace of 20 mph it can be difficult to notice when someone else's world has come to an end. Sometimes even 10 feet is too far and it all goes by very quickly. Just then, the light turned green and I continued through it with very little break in my stride.

Bianchi boy didn't pass me again. I'm not sure why. I never looked back.

A similar thing happened to me about three years ago on the train. As The Metra from Oak Park gets closer to downtown, it passes through a train yard, then behind a scrap metal facility and finally some factories. I was looking out the window, watching them go by, when I saw a body laying stiff and grey, amid a bed of rocks, just beyond The Blommer Chocolate Factory. I was startled, not sure if I was seeing exactly what I thought I was seeing. Pressing my hands against the window, I stared, wondering if the person laying there could possibly be sleeping. And If he was, wouldn't that be a terribly uncomfortable place to rest? The rocks had tufts of long weeds poking through them and the man laid on his side, staring unblinking as our train passed by him. No, it was clear that there was no life left in his body. nbsp;I turned my attention inside, nbsp;desperately searching the faces in the car to confirm that I was not looking at a mirage. No one else showed any sense of alarm. In fact everyone's heads were hunched over their books or morning papers, reading calmly. Then as now, the world that ended right outside the window was too far away for concern.

When we pulled into the station, I notified the police that were on duty. The next morning, the body was gone. It was as if it had never been there at all. People read their papers, the same way they had the day before. Sometimes I wish I could do the same. Whenever I ride my bike past Kenton Ave. or the train slows behin...</itunes:summary>

<description>With the notable exception of Michael Jordan, most talented people are lazy. If their work ethic matched their level of talent, well… they&amp;#8217;d probably be like Mike.
I think there&amp;#8217;s a circular kind of dynamic that exists. People who aren&amp;#8217;t as talented know their limitations and therefore work harder while talented people realize they&amp;#8217;re gifted so [...]&lt;div class="feedflare"&gt;

I want to tell you something that was said to me recently. But as with most things, I can't tell you what was said, straight-out. My mind tends to work like thousands of little index cards, all attached to each other by a string. If I want to get to one simple idea, I have to first make my way through twenty or thirty related ideas that are all threaded together. If I pull one card, another comes with it, then another and another and so on, until I'm ensnared in a tangle of cards and string and I've forgotten what the hell I was talking about in the first place. This is usually what causes my wife's eyes to glaze over.
So in telling this, I'm going to take the long way around so I suggest you sit back and enjoy the ride. Hopefully I'll be able to find my way to the end of the story without getting lost. Probably not though.

Whatever. It's not like you've got anything better to do.

Trojan Jackson used to sit in the back of the room during study hours, doing the oddest thing. Studying. This was the fall of 1986 and we were pledging. The rest of us were far too busy NOT studying, to study. We were doing assignments for the brothers, talking about what had happened the previous night, or worrying about what would happen that coming night. If we were studying, it was the history of the fraternity, chapter history, line history dating back ten years or we were quizzing each other, trying desperately to memorize dozens of poems. Not Troy. While we all flitted around the room in a panic, he sat in the back, large and stoic, with his arms folded, staring at his book. Like a huge, grey stone.

hellip; That is to say, if the stone could readhellip; And then get up and go to the bathroom every once in a whilehellip; And if the stone could go to the vending machine for a candy bar.

When we asked why he wasn't in as much of a tizzy as the rest of us, he said simply in a low, grumbly voice, "What for? We gon' get mopped anyway." That was Troy. He was, and still is, a man of few words. When he does speak, his words very often mirror him. They are hefty and without pretense.

Years later, as I was on my way to lunch, I saw Troy sauntering toward me. He wore a festive, brightly colored shirt with light colored slacks and he smiled warmly as he approached. "Shippee!" he said, chuckling in his baritone. We embraced and I immediately started peppering him with questions about his family and his job. He answered my questions calmly. His family was doing well, the children were growing fast and oh by the way, he had quit his job. "Really?!! When?!!" I asked. "Just now." He glanced at his watch, "Well, five minutes ago." "Oh!", I said, "You just gave notice huh? Where is your new job?" "Don't have one." He said matter-of-factly. "You've got to be kidding!!!", I exclaimed.

After much thought, Troy concluded he had suffered sufficient abuse under his current manager. He vowed to himself that if the manager did or said one more thing out-of-pocket, he would quit. He did, so Troy did.

He explained, "I just told him, 'To hell with this. I quit.' I went to my desk and packed up my things." My jaw fell open. I asked if he was worried about getting another job. "Naw." he said coolly, "Something will turn up." "What did your co-workers say?" I asked, still in shock. "Oh they agreed with me, but they were still surprised I did it. They kept asking how I could do something like that. I really don't think it's a big deal if you have no fear." Had it been said by someone else, like me, that last statement might have sounded like bragging, but that's only because I would have been bragging. Coming from Trojan Jackson though, it was simply a statement of fact. Two days later he had a new job.

Recently I had dinner with Troy, Audwin The Black Belt, and Al Davis, another one of my pledge brothers. Ever...</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>"This just don't make no damn sense!" My wife said walking into the bedroom. I quickly stuffed the remaining chocolate chip cookie into my mouth to hide the fact that I was eating cookies in the bedroom. She looked at me, rolled her eyes and shook her head. That's not unusual. She does that a lot. "What's wrong sweetie?" I inquired through a mouthful of cookie. I added "sweetie" at the end to further distract her. "Two things." She said, "First is your son and second is you thinking I won't notice you're eating cookies in the bedroom." Dammit, how does she know these things? She read the look on my face before saying aloud, "Dammit, how does she know these things?" She shook her head again. (See I told you she does that a lot). I swallowed the remaining cookie and asked what my son had done. She eyed me and said, "I expected certain things to be passed on through the genes, eye color and hair color, that kind of thing is fine. But you pass along your damn issues." "What did I do now?" I asked. I'm used to being in trouble in my house. Even if I have no idea what I've done. "Why don't you go downstairs and see for yourself." She said.

Before I can tell that story I have to tell this story in order to give it some context. When I was growing up I loved Spiderman. But I didn't just love Spiderman, I wanted to be Spiderman. I was convinced that if anyone in the entire universe, deserved to be Spiderman, it was me.

I am still convinced of this fact. So deep is my conviction to this belief, I just called it a fact. I'll believe what I want. You can't stop me!

In second grade, as Halloween approached, I asked my parents if I could be Spiderman for the class costume party. They said yes so for the next few weeks that's all I talked about. "Spidaman! I'm gonna be Spidaman for Halloween! Spidaaaa maaaaaan! Yes! "Wow that's great!" a girl named Laurie said to me as I stood on the desk doing my best, I'm-gonna-be-Spidaman-dance. "I'm going to be Spiderman too." She said. My reveling stopped short. "What?! You can't be Spiderman, you're a girl." "Yes I can. Girls can do whatever they want!" She retorted hotly. "Yes they can. As long as it has to do with cooking, cleaning and babies." I said. This was 1972 It would take me another twenty four years before I realized that indeed, girls can do whatever the hell they want, whether I think it makes sense or not. In fact, according to my wife, what I think, is highly specious and most often irrelevant.

As the day of the party drew closer I became more and more nervous since I had not seen the familiar store-bought costume made of cheap red and blue felt, and the oh so coveted plastic Spiderman face mask, complete with the rubberband that held it somewhere near the area of the head. "Don't worry about it." My father said sternly. You'll have it by the day of the party.

The morning of the party arrived and there was no Spiderman costume. In fact there was no costume whatsoever. I was panicked. How could I face everyone without my Spiderman costume? "Don't worry about it." My father assured, "We'll go out this morning, buy the costume and bring it to school in time for the party." I was relieved. But only slightly.

That entire morning I couldn't concentrate. My eyes kept flashing toward the door, waiting for my parents to walk in holding the costume aloft, like conquering heroes. I played the scene over and over in my head in slow motion. Complete with appropriate theme music.

When the teacher, Mrs. Friedman announced that it was time for everyone to change into their costumes, my parents still hadn't arrived. Everyone sat in their costumes cross-legged in a circle. There were two Batmen, and one Superman. I felt naked sitting there in my civilian clothes. To make matters worse, Laurie sat directly across from me. Dressed as Spiderman.

I hated her.

Just then my parents opened the door of the classroom holding a bag from Zayre's. "Yes!" I leapt from the circle, "Spidaman</itunes:summary>

Wynton Marsalis and ...</itunes:subtitle>
<itunes:summary>If you're too lazy to move your eyeballs in order to read this post, you can listen to the podcast edition. (lazy ass).

Wynton Marsalis and I have been locked in an epic struggle between good and evil for the past fifteen years. It is a soul-wrenching battle that goes back and forth and often it is difficult to tell which one of us will emerge victorious. At stake is nothing less than the hearts, minds and soul of all of humanity. And though at times I grow weary of the constant skirmishing, I push myself to continue the fight, if not for me then for the children.

Did I mention Wynton Marsalis has no idea who I am? Nor does he realize that we've even been engaged in this monumental conflict?

No matter.

In college, Wynton was part of my introduction to discovering "real" jazz on my own, moving away from the likes of David Sanborn and Michael Franks. At the time nearly my entire catalog of albums consisted of ska and reggae. When asked if I liked jazz I would have said, "Sure!" and would have immediately put on Kenny G., exclaiming "Listen to how fast he plays those scales!"

At the time, I hosted a radio show at the Black radio station, playing reggae music after which was the jazz show hosted by my friends Shawn Wallce and Robert "Goody Box" Goodwin. Shawn was a short, stocky, music major. He was pigeon-toed and walked like Fred G. Sanford. Goody was taller, barrel-chested and was well versed in jazz, having been raised in it his entire life. They were best friends and roommates and are famous for giving birth to "The Typical Shawn and Rob argumenttrade;." These are debates which eventually degrade into arguing over semantics. "Well it depends on what your definition of rub-it-up-and-smack-it-down, is. Where I grew up in Carbondale, this clearly referred to the use of the left hand." When this point of the conversation has been reached, it indicates the end of the debate at which point one person must say, "Well now we're just in a typical Shawn and Rob argumenttrade;, so we might as well go home and make some sandwiches."

I looked forward to seeing them walk in the back door of the African American Cultural Center, where the radio station was housed. I would sometimes sit in on their show and listen to their disputes while they were off the air. (Most often I would find a way to spur the arguments on, because that's what I'm good at). They began every show with Herbie Hancock's, Maiden Voyage. Goody would swing the microphone around the desk and talk over the intro in his low, baritone voice.

When I asked them what they thought of Kenny G., they both laughed. "Man that's not jazz. All he does is play scales really fast." Shawn said chuckling. "Ha hahellip; yeah, I knowhellip;that's stupid." I said nervously. "You want to hear something really good." Rob said, "Check this out." He reached over to the crates fishing out, Black Codes from the Underground by Wynton. They played the entire album over the radio while Shawn explained the musical fine points. My jaw went slack in amazement.

The next break I went home and raided my father's albums for jazz. "Pop, have you ever heard of a fellow named John Coltrane? I hear he's pretty good." He walked away from me shaking his head, mumbling under his breath.

After college, my jazz catalog had expanded exponentially and it included nearly all of Wynton's albums. One year, Wynton was signing a picture book he had published, chronicling his life as a musician. I thought it would be a great birthday present for my father and a bonus if we could get it signed. I called my brother to go in with me to buy the book. I needed his help because I was working my first job out of college as a designer and was therefore, broke. "Fine." my brother sighed. "Who the hell is Wynton Marsalis anyway?"

We ventured up to the Border's Bookstore in Deerfield, a suburb north of Chicago. My brother was working in my father's accounting firm at the time and was dressed i...</itunes:summary>
