Man arrested at airport was trying to get on plane with loaded gun, TSA says

A 60-year-old man attempting to fly from Baltimore to Tampa, Florida, this weekend is facing charges for attempting to board a plane with a loaded gun, the Transportation Security Administration says.
The incident happened Sunday morning at Baltimore/Washington International-Thurgood Marshall Airport when a TSA officer spotted the weapon in the passenger’s carry-on bag, the TSA said.
Security officials alerted the Maryland Transportation Authority Police after finding the 9 mm Glock 17 loaded with 10 rounds of ammunition and one bullet in the chamber. The Palm Harbor, Florida, man was also allegedly carrying two additional magazines, each loaded with 10 rounds, the TSA said.
Police confiscated the weapon and ammunition and arrested Michael Menlo Smith on two handgun charges.

With business and leisure travel growing, the average price for a hotel room rose 4.3% nationwide last year and is expected to climb further this year, helping the industry rebound from the Great Recession.

The higher rates also reflected the limited growth in the number of new hotels, according to industry analysts.

Last year’s increases and this year’s projections came in separate studies that looked at hotel bookings over the last year and advance bookings into the next nine months.

At the end of December, hotel rates nationwide were up 4.3% from a year earlier, to an average daily rate of $107.56, according to a study released Friday by STR Global, a hotel research firm in Nashville.

Hotel room prices rise 4.3% in 2011

Rates are expected to rise nationwide as travel in the U.S. grows, creating more demand for hotel rooms.

The number of hotel rooms in the U.S. grew only 0.6% last year, said Jan Freitag, senior vice president at STR. In contrast, the hotel industry added rooms at a rate of 2.2% a year over the last 20 years, he said.

Fewer hotels were built last year because banks were more reluctant to finance hotel construction, he said.

“The limited number of rooms gave the hotels pricing power,” Freitag said.

Travel: Former W.Va. asylum now a booming tourism business

Weston Hospital, it eventually closed in 1994, when the state moved patients to a more modern facility. Then it stood empty for nearly 15 years, inhabited only by rats, security guards and the occasional paintball-playing trespasser.

The seven museum rooms also feature more than 120 pieces of artwork — pottery, paintings, quilts — that patients made in therapy. Disassembled for the winter, when the building is cold and damp, the displays include the superintendent’s books, nurses’ logs and more.

The asylum is working with West Virginia University to create an interactive exhibit featuring story boards, photos and recorded interviews with former patients and staff. And the museum is a popular stop with not only junior high and high school history classes, but also nursing and abnormal psychology students.

The control tower is mostly about safety and security. Frederick Municipal Airport is the second-busiest airport in the state, and Daugherty said he expected the volume of operations to continue to increase.

The airport’s Runway 5 extension project — a separate venture to lengthen the runway by 600 feet on the south and 180 feet on the north — will bring more, and possibly larger, aircraft to the area.

Standing 106 feet high, the six-story tower will have an unobstructed view of the airport’s two licensed runways — primary Runway 5 and secondary runway 12/30 — and be staffed by two to three FAA contract controllers.

“We are in the final push to get this thing done,” Daugherty said of the construction work at the airport.

After a thorough tower walk-through after Tuesday’s earthquake, the airport manager reported no negative effects to the building.

In another step toward the transition to the new control tower, the rotating beacon attached to the top of the Airways Inn restaurant, the top floor of which houses the airport manager’s office, has been turned off; a new light on the tower was activated, to indicate the airport’s location.

State extends BWI taxi contract for one year

People flying into Baltimore’s airport will continue taking cabs managed by BWI Taxi Management Inc. after the state’s Board of Public Works decided Wednesday to defer for one year a decision on whether to award the contract to a different company.

The move ends for now protests by cabdrivers who did not want the state contract to go to a Virginia-based firm. Maryland officials said questions raised during the debate prompted them to hold off on granting a new four-year contract.

Dulles Airport Taxi Inc. would have paid the state about $1 million more for the airport rights. But current cabdrivers at Baltimore-Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport feared that the Virginia company would cut jobs and pay.
