The story follows a young girl who escapes an unfriendly home life only to learn, years later, that her family may be in danger. She starts on a quest to get home, meeting some very strange characters with equally strange requests along the way. The game is played out like a sidescrolling platformer in an adventure sort of world, but the puzzles and challenge come from finding the list of objects hidden throughout the stage. In order to pass to the next area, you’ll need to scour the landscape for roses, boxes, seeds, scrolls, and dozens more items, each more cunningly hidden than the last!

Memohuntress is a gorgeous game. The artwork shows a true sense of creativity, drawing from fantasy styles, futuristic cyberpunk novels, and, apparently, Scandanavian tales to decorate the world with inspired scenery. There are multiple layers in each area, so everything from the foreground to the deep background is a part of the game. It’s a good thing your job is to pour over the screen to find items, because you’ll want to drink in every piece of artwork this game has to offer.

Memohuntress is unique, challenging, and brandishes its own style of charm. The story and voice acting may be somewhat lacking, but the game itself is so beautiful and entertaining, you won’t have any trouble overlooking any minor flaws.

BlokBlok – This is the sort of puzzle game that will keep you awake at night, trying to solve levels even when the nearest computer is safely switched off in the other room. You are given a tiled picture on the left, and a jumbled set of tiles to the right. Using a set of shapes, each with a different pattern, you have a limited number of moves to transform the big picture into the small picture. It’s easy at first, but you won’t coast for very long in this rough game!

Hambo 2 – The Rob Donkin/robotJAM combo continues to rock in this fantastic physics sequel. It’s you (a pig) versus the mafia (pig mafia) in three dozen levels of tough puzzles and smart decisions. Use a series of weapons to bring death to your enemies, dropping them into pits, blowing them up with heavy weaponry, or just handing them the business end of a bullet. Every bit as funny and challenging as the original Hambo!

Ballooner – If you’ve ever played a game like Red Remover, you know exactly what to expect from Ballooner. Your job is to rid the world of evil balloons while setting good balloons free. You do this by clicking obstacles to make them disappear, or by setting up chain reactions that will make even bigger things happen. It’s a bit short and a bit on the easy side, but it’s colorful and fun, which might be exactly what you’re looking for to pass the time!

Rebuild 2 is a sequel to the equally-impressive original game, Rebuild. Here, you’re given a small set of land on a grid and are in charge of the survivors living there. Scout out new territory, scavenge for food, recruit new survivors, and send people out on missions to expand your anti-zombie fence so you can slowly rebuild the town they’ve destroyed. All the while, you’ll fend off zombie attacks and deal with random events that can help or hurt your situation, depending on how you respond!

Combining strategy and simulation elements in a very elegant way, Rebuild 2 is just about as flawless as you can get. Nothing about this game makes you want to stop playing or turn your nose in disgust, even if you’re not a fan of simulation or strategy games! It’s casual and simple, but crank up the difficulty and you’re in for a rough ride. Once you start Rebuild 2, you absolutely will not want to stop!

Super Mario Bros. Crossover 2.0 – The free Flash game that, arguably, popularized the retro remix in the 2000s, Super Mario Bros. Crossover takes levels, characters, sprites and moves from a handful of classic NES games (Metroid, Mega Man, Castlevania, etc.) and mixes them all together for an entirely new adventure. Why break bricks with a lame jump when you can whip them from the side? The 2.0 upgrade added loads of new content to enjoy, including characters and visual styles from the Game Boy and Super NES eras, so even if you’re already a fan of SMBC, you should become a fan all over again because, well, it’s awesome!

Rokko Chan – If Mega Man was more your thing back in the 80s/90s, we have good news for you. Rokko Chan is an entirely original game created in the style of the 8-bit Mega Man series, right down to the amazing chiptune soundtrack! Just like before, you’ll jump and shoot your way through stages to reach a final boss whose metallic face you’ll bust up and whose special ability you’ll steal. Great fun, and a great challenge, to boot!

Abobo’s Big Adventure – We loved it so much we reviewed it! Abobo played a tiny part in a few Tradewest games back in the NES days, but now, thanks to some creative game design, he gets an epic (and epically hilarious) adventure all to himself. Featuring almost a dozen levels, each with a new play style you’ll have to learn to master, you’ll travel through a handful of retro games like Super Mario Bros., Pro Wrestling, Contra, and Balloon Fight!

Each level features an arrangement of baddies placed around the screen. Switch between Teddy and Bear by pressing the S key, and use the numbers one through six to swap weapons. Each weapon has a different use, and each bear has his own ammo supply, so you can’t just smack some buttons and call it a day. Ice bombs, for example, freeze monsters so they slide to their doom. Regular bombs do just what you’d think, and throwing stars are a good staple for dealing damage. Your goal is to clear every enemy from the screen, a feat that is, naturally, much more difficult than it sounds!

Ninja Bear & Purple Teddy includes a level editor as well as access to user-made stages, adding a ton of replay value to the already beefy experience. The gameplay and concept are solid, but the visuals are lacking in some areas, as some sprites seem too small while others are void of detail. Regardless, Ninja Bear & Purple Teddy is a fun, funny, and challenging experience from the first level all the way to the last!

Adynatopia – The famous perspective experiments of MC Escher give rise to Adynatopia, a game that tricks your eyes and your brain just because it can. Your goal is to move to the shadowy pawn figure somewhere on the screen. You get there by… well, by forgetting about conventional game physics and just seeing what can occur. Sometimes it’s best to have a literal eye, while other times you’ve got to think outside of the 3D box. Try it, you’ll see what we mean!

The Scale of the Universe – Not a game, but a free web experience that is absolutely mind-blowing. From quantum foam to the universe as a whole, The Scale of the Universe lets you smoothly scroll from the tiniest particle to the largest star clusters in a gorgeous, seamless manner. Not only is it visually appealing, you can click on everything you see for tidbits of information. Think of it as the best way to gather a bunch of knowledge that will make you sound smart at parties!

ChatChat – From VVVVVV creator Terry Cavanagh comes a free massively multiplayer online cat simulation! Ok, so it’s not very accurate, but you get to play as a cat with a bunch of other people pretending to be cats as you run around doing cat-like things. Purring. Meowing. Napping. Gathering mice to deliver them to the doorstep. Lots of fun, and completely pointless, which may or may not increase your enjoyment of the game!

If you’ve played a point and click game before, you’ll have a good idea how to get started in this latest Reemus adventure. Use the mouse to examine things, talk to characters, and advance through dialogue. You can move from area to area using the arrows at the bottom of the screen. Your inventory holds useful items you’ll pick up and it sits right beside the map, a handy little tool that, well, shows you where you are!

Gameplay mechanics aside, what really draws players to The Several Journeys of Reemus is its sense of humor. From the wacky environments to the ludicrous plots, nigh-insane characters, and witty dialogue, this game doesn’t take anything seriously, not even filing paperwork. You’ll click along at a steady clip, enjoying every scene and every bit of text presented before your eyes. This Reemus release is quite a bit longer than previous chapters, though some of the puzzles do seem easier than before. Still, it’s tough to turn down a game when exterminating giant beetles is considered a menial task!
