There have been lot of adventure mystery games for PC and Mac new out this month. This is a list of my top 10 new mystery adventure PC games out August 2011, plus one more that was out just today, but I haven't played it yet. Included in this list are mostly adventure HO hybrid games with a couple of just hidden object or just point and click adventure games.
All have free demos available and some are also available for Mac download too.

New Hidden Object Games 2011 - Hidden Expedition Uncharted Islands Review

Continuing from the previous chapter in the Hidden Expedition series, this new HO game has some of the same characters and gameplay of the first game. After crash landing on this unknown island, a mysterious hooded woman finds you. But she needs your help to save the islands from an ongoing feud between the local inventor Gideon and the evil Baron Undertow, a young pirate intent on getting his hands on Gideon's invention. With this invention, Undertow plans to wreck havoc upon the world if he is not stopped!

How to Play Hidden Expedition The Uncharted Islands
This is a point&click hidden object adventure game. Sparkles indicate items of interest, you have a hint button, and a notebook to store useful bits of info. Navigate through the scenes to interact with the characters and objects, with unique HO scenes in which to seek and find clues, as well as puzzles and mini-games.

What makes this new hidden object game much more interesting than the usual games is the hidden object elements. With a number of variations on the HO gameplay - including the usual HO games where you find items listed per scene, then there's the find a number of the same type of object within a scene, eg find all the butterflies. But this game also has a nice twist in hidden object games with the layered, HO game within a HO game where you must manipulate and interact with the hidden objects found to solve a problem before moving to the next layer of HO gaming. Very interesting. There are also some fab puzzles and mini-games to play.

Pros and Cons of this new Hidden Object Game
* Pros: Beautiful scenes, nice background music, minimal voice-overs, and although this chapter uses some of the plot and characters from the first game, the intro from the hooded woman fills in the gaps so you are not lost if you haven't played the first chapter.
Especially good is the interactive hidden object games and the layered gameplay. Also some great puzzles. A very challenging new hidden object game overall.
* Cons: though the illustrations are very clear the hidden items are sometimes so small and/or the background so dark, that it can be very tough to find some items. Also you'll find that you must be precise about where you place the cursor to 'pick' up the small items. Sometimes you think that you may have just clicked on the wrong place or just got it wrong, but actually you've just not clicked on the precise area correctly. But once you get the hang of the level of precision then this becomes less of an issue.
The puzzles are sometimes not clear in what the aim is and can take a bit of time to work out. On the other hand, and another minor issue the mini-games are sometimes a little too easy.
* Overall: An excellent adventure game with an interesting and new hidden object gameplay. The story is also good fun with the visual and sound adding to the atmospherics. A perfect choice for those looking for the best new hidden object games in 2011. Though the minigames maybe a little easy, the puzzle games are particularly challenging, so may not be suitable for HO-adventure hybrid newbies.

New hidden object and adventure mystery hybrid game, Sacra Terra Angelic Night is one of the best mystery PC games of 2011 so far! Starting in an old decaying mental hospital with the help of an angelic spirit you must defeat the scary demons of the 7 Deadly Sins! This mystery game has it all, from the compelling storyline and the challenging gameplay - both hidden object and point-and-click adventure to the atmospheric background music and beautiful graphics. This is a brilliant mystery adventure game with a totally immersive fantasy atmosphere and so many hours of games to play. This is much much more than the usual mystery adventure games for PC.

My choice for the best mystery PC games of 2011 so far!
Plot: Danger has come to the world of Sacra Terra when demons of the seven deadly sins have broken from their fiery prison and taken up residence. In this horror adventure mystery, it is up to you with the aid of an apparition called Angel, to combat each demon. By searching hidden object scenes for clues and solving a unique assortment of puzzles, you must try to crack the mystery of how the demons escaped their prison, how to get them back in again, and save Sacra Terra from complete destruction!

How to Play Sacra Terra Angelic Night
Point and click on various items to glean additional info from them, use the in-built map to be able to view the areas where you have tasks to be completed and if you need it there's a hint button to help with both HOG areas and the main areas too. You can also choose the difficulty level - choose easy level if you want 'sparkles' to indicate where there are HO scenes or items of interest and also for a quicker load up time of the hint button. There is very little dialogue, instead you discover the story behind the mystery by collecting bits of notes that you find scattered throughout the locations. These are automatically stored for you in your notebook, which will be useful as you'll need to refer back to them as you progress through the adventure.

Why this is a Top Mystery PC Game
* My review: This is such a beautifully detailed atmospheric adventure game with an engaging ghostly story. The fantasy horror feeling of it is enhanced in a number of ways - by the illustrations, the music, the locations - such as the asylum and it's eerie catacombs, a medieval abbey and a graveyard, the haunting characters and by having virtually no dialogue. As for the gameplay this is quite substantial with hours and hours of gameplay and includes interesting puzzles, some that use your inventory items and loads of challenging hidden object scenes. The Collectors Edition also has extra gameplay, artwork and an in-built strategy guide.

This top 10 new mystery adventure PC games list post includes mystery PC games released July 2011. From atmospheric spooky adventure mysteries to detective and murder mystery stories. All of the games below involve some puzzle and hidden object elements, some have more hidden object games than others, some are more point and click adventure games.
There are games listed below for PC and Mac downloads - full and free versions. This is a list of my choices for the top 10 best mystery pc games out last month. If you are looking for some great hidden object games just out you'll find loads here. And if your looking for something a bit different than the usual HO games or inventory (iHOGs) games , checkout the fragmented object game (FROG), Macabre Mysteries. Similar to hidden object games (HOGs), except instead of having a list of items to find within a given scene, in FROGs you have to find fragments of objects throughout the game.
Collectors Editions or CE are extended versions of the game and usually include an additional chapter or bonus game play as well as exclusive extras that are not in the standard versions.

The hidden object games to play which are engaging and challenging. This is a good example of the murder mystery PC games genre. This game includes occult themes that may not suit all tastes. And the mini-games are bit simple and not on the same level of difficulty as the HOGs.

Return to Ravenhearst is a blend of hidden object and adventure gameplay, though the emphasis is on point and click adventure gaming. As you explore the creepy Manor, moving from room to room, click on sparkling items to gather useful clues and info (these will automatically get recorded in your helpful casebook for reference).

Best Mystery Adventure PC Games - MCF5 Hidden Object Screenshot

Click on a shower of sparkles in a location to zoom into hidden object game (HOG), which are untimed. Once you have completed the HOG you’ll earn an inventory item. The inventory items will be used in the adventure part of the game and for solving logic puzzles. And it is the puzzles many of which are very challenging that really add depth to the gameplay of this MCF game. You can skip the puzzles, if you get stuck but a penalty will be added to your timer. You also have hint system to help you but it does take quite a long time to reload.

The Return to Ravenhearst game is completely immersive with a dark and eerie atmosphere - from its compelling story, challenging gameplay to the spooky sound effects, music and beautiful graphics. This is a haunting supernatural adventure mystery game and though it is a few years old now, it is still one of my recommendations for the best mystery detective games ever!

James Patterson Womens Murder Club PC Detective Games List

There are currently four murder detective PC games in the Women's Murder Club computer game series. Based on the characters from the books of the US best-selling crime fiction author James Patterson (which was also made into a US TV series). The Womens Murder Club is made up of 3 women who combine forces to put their unique skills and professional talents to solve murder mysteries: Lindsay (police officer), Claire (forensic medical examiner) and Cindy (investigative reporter). In all the 4 WMC games you will get to play the 3 characters, who take it turns to use their specific skills to collect clues, investigate scenes and question suspects.
For me, these murder mystery games combine hidden object scenes with minigame puzzles of forensic labwork and detective activities (professional and amateur) to create some of the best examples of murder mystery adventure games for PC (and one for Mac)! Plus I like the colour theme in the game titles.

* My review: This second murder investigation game in the Womens Murder Club series is of a good length with interesting unique gameplay and excellent graphics. Which in combination with the murder mystery was quite involving. However, the cutscenes (that fill in the detail of each chapter of the murder investigation) were quite long and unfortunately you cannot skip them - this tended to lessen the momentum of the game. And some of the puzzles, though more creative than usual, they were not too challenging. Overall, a good detective game, but there are better ones in the series. My rating: ★ ★ ★

* My review: This is a better detective game than the previous episode in the series. With an eerie atmosphere, challenging hidden object and puzzle games that are in-keeping with the storyline. The graphics and sound enhance the dark tense atmosphere as you progress through the murder investigation - some of the scenes are very realistic and beautifully done. An excellent detective game. Only gripe is that sometimes the HOG items were too well-hidden and I had to use the hints alot. My rating: ★ ★ ★ ★

This post is all about detective games for PC and Mac that have been created from Agatha Christie's excellent stories, featuring her most popular sleuths Hercule Poirot and Miss Marple. There are currently 7 Christie detective PC games for download online.
All use Christie's bestselling crime novels as a basis for the games, some stick very closely to the original storyline whilst some use just the basic plot line then can deviate quite substantially from the books.
So even if you have read the original books, there is still some suspense and surprises in these games for Agatha Christie fans to play! I've included my own review and ratings in this list of mystery PC games based on Agatha Christie's novels.

Agatha Christie - Evil Under the Sun
* Game genre: adventure, puzzle

Best Detective PC Games - Evil under the Sun screenshot

* My review: For me this is the best detective PC games version of Agatha Christie's stories. It thoroughly encapsulated the look and feel of the original story, with beautiful graphics (see screenshot above of the Art Deco bar of the island's hotel). You play the part of Captain Hastings and assist Poirot in the investigation of the murder mystery. Even if you are not familiar with the story, there are plenty of cut-scenes to fill in the background to the story. For those of you who prefer mystery hidden object games, you may find this detective game a little long-winded as you end up having to do alot of walking to and fro as you collect clues and interrogate quite alot of suspects. But if you like mystery adventures this will be right up your street, as there is hours of gameplay and plenty to investigate on the island and nearby locations.

Agatha Christie - Death on the Nile

Agatha Christie - Peril at End House

Agatha Christie - And Then There Were None

* My review: If you've read this story or watched the black & white film version, you'll remember the spine-chilling atmosphere of this story. And this game manages to evoke that same tension, however the gameplay is a little confusing and could have been better. But the puzzles are good and there are a number of alternate endings, so if you are a fan of Christie, you may like to try this if only for the eerie atmosphere of being on an isolated island, with a persistent storm preventing your escape whilst one by one each of the guests are murdered!

Agatha Christie - Murder on the Orient Express

* My review: This is probably Christie's most famous story. And the game does well in recreating 'closed-room' feeling of being trapped in the snow on a luxury train with a murderer possibly still in the vicinity! However, the traipsing up and down on the train to collect clues, to use your inventory items solving puzzles and to interview suspects can become a litte tedious. But alternate endings and the new character that you play who takes on the investigation because Poirot is unable to, makes this still quite a good game for fans of this murder mystery adventure.

But, it is a little on the sort side, so if you like to rush through HO games then this game won't last you very long. However, if you like to take your time, and enjoy the scenery, the mystery and adventure, and of course savour this classic mystery story in PC game form, then you will be sure to get more out of this game.

Mystery Masterpiece: The Moonstone

Best Detective Games for PC/Mac - MCF6 Dire Grove

For me one of the best detective games (for PC and Mac download) is Dire Grove, the 6th episode in the Mystery Case Files series from Big Fish Games (released Nov 2009). It is an excellent example of a casual game that seamlessly combines point-n-click adventure gaming, puzzles and hidden object games into a detective mystery game that is both challenging and immersive. The top quality game play, a really good storyline and excellent sound and visuals all come together to create an eerie, chilling and thoroughly enjoyable detective game! This is surely, why Mystery Case Files 6: Dire Grove is still one of the most popular downloadable detective games online and consistently receives top ratings and reviews from mystery detective fans and casual adventure gamers alike.

Mystery Files Dire Grove
A story of Dire Grove's legend, Celtic relics and missing college students!
Dire Grove is a chilling, snow-bound point-n-click adventure game set North Yorkshire in an isolated village. You play the mystery files detective, and the story opens with you driving back to HQ after having just solved another tough case. But a sudden and violent blizzard forces you to come off the motorway and seek the safety of a rural access road. Up ahead you notice an abandoned car, on investigation you find a very disturbing note inside, that seems to have been left by the driver in a hurry and a video tape. With your handy Crime Computer you are able to watch the video and discover that you have fallen upon another mystery and a creepy one at that! As you make your way on foot up the rural track, you come to Dire Grove's hotel, which even though it's closed for the season it has an air of eeriness and desolation that is palpable. There's definitely an interesting mystery to solve here!

Why I Love MCF6 - Dire Grove Review
1. The Setting, Story and Atmosphere
* First, the plot of the Celtic legend of Dire Grove and students who've come to the ruins to investigate it has you intrigued from the start!
* The setting of the remote village and the locations in it from the closed Hotel, the hunting lodge, the ruins and the local gift shop all have been well-designed to add to the spooky backdrop to this game
* The snow storm also adds to the building suspense with the sound effects of the wind and the eerie effect that the snow has that dims the light in the outside areas
* The atmosphere is also enhanced by the sound track that has been written specifically for the game (Note: The volumes for the music, sound effects and environment can be adjusted separately in the options menu)

2. The Dire Grove Game Play and Navigation
* The layout and navigation of the game is well-designed, allowing you options as to where to investigate next, but giving you hints with a golden arrow.
* A magnifying glass shows you items you can pick up, a sparkle indicates items of interest or a puzzle that will need to be solved and a shower of sparkles means there's a hidden object game (HOG) game to do
* The hidden object scenes are cleanly designed not too cluttered and are challenging without being impossible. And if necessary there is a 'Hint' button there, which needs to recharge after every use, but doesn't take too long to do it
* Also every HOG scene includes an inventory item which you will need at some point in the game to get you past an obstacle. Once you've completed the hidden object game, the inventory item is automatically stored in for you. Sometimes you will find you have a HOG in the same place at different times - in order to get a different and necessary inventory item
* The puzzles are good too, not too difficult but you can skip them if you want to - again solving puzzles will reveal further info that you will need in the game - any such info is automatically stored for you in your case file, so you can refer to it asyou need it
* Sometimes you'll know the use of the inventory item straight away, but mostly, you will have to refer back to your inventory to see if you have the right item to help you clear an obstacle or wait till you have inventory items that can be used in combination with each other, in order to collect another clue. I like this imaginative use of the inventory items.

3. Additional Plus Points
* In the Collector's Edition you get to play bonus games and additional challenges, for example: win points for not using the Hint button in the HOGs or not skipping the puzzles, or collecting morphing items that appear through the game. This means you can play the whole game again for different goals, cool!
* What is especially spine-chilling and really keeps this game's suspense going, is the use of the real life video footage from the missing students (Blair Witch style). From the video tapes that they have left behind them as they go missing is left for you like a breadcrumb trail! As you watch each of the video clips, you learn bit by bit the story of how they came to be at Dire Grove. A scary and chilling tale that unfolds adding to the suspense and keeping you on the edge of your seat!
* With all this Dire Grove has hours of gameplay and is takes a substantial amount of time to crack the case - for a casual detective game. And with the the bonus games in the collectors edition - you can get even more out of it.

What's the Best Detective Game Ever?
The best detective games for PC download manage to effectively combine an engaging story, challenging game play and an immersive atmosphere (with sound and visuals). And MCF's Dire Grove manages to do this perfectly because of the game developers' attention to detail and this is why it is one of my choices for best detective games ever.
