Miami-Ohio/Florida ‘under’ 52½: Miami-Ohio is coming off of a 1-11 season, and this is a team that had a terrible offensive line last season. That being the case, is it really a good thing that the undersized line returns all five starters, especially vs. the Florida defensive line? The Gators begin life without Tim Tebow, although they should still be very solid. Since the outcome of this game should never be in doubt, the Gators should be more concerned with working on their timing in a live-game situation than with meaninglessly running up the score.

Illinois/Missouri ‘under’ 54: This is another total that seems a tad high because only one team will be doing most of the scoring. Illinois underperformed a year ago like many Ron Zook teams normally do, and lost a lot and will be worse this season. There also seems to be a clash, with the pass-happy Paul Petrino brought in to be offensive coordinator for a team that’s lacking at the quarterback and receiver positions. Missouri could leap to elite status in the Big 12 this year if the defense improves, and the Tigers should have no problems with this Illini offense.

Kentucky -3 over Louisville: This game features two new head coaches, but Kentucky coach Joker Phillips has a lot more to work with here. Besides, Phillips has been the coach in waiting for several years now, as it was a forgone conclusion that he would take over once Rich Brooks retired, and Brooks’ entire coaching staff remains in tact, which should make for a smooth transition. Conversely, Louisville Coach Charlie Strong was left with a one dimensional offense and a horrible defense, and it will take a lot more than just home field to keep pace with this SEC opponent.

Navy -6 over Maryland: Sometimes, having a one-dimensional offense is a good thing, as Navy has been to seven straight bowl games while employing the option attack put in by Paul Johnson, who has since moved on the Georgia Tech. The Midshipmen averaged an impressive 280.5 rushing yards per game last year, which was fourth best in the nation. Now, it is not normally advisable to give this many points with a team that does not pass the ball, but Maryland had the worse defense in the ACC last year and returns just one starter on the defensive line. Thus, Navy should be able to run at will and name the score in this spot.

Colorado State +12 over Colorado: It is tough to give this many points in a rivalry game with a Colorado team that has uncertainty at the quarterback position. Coach Dan Hawkins has named Tyler Hansen as the starting QB for now over Cody Hawkins, who just happens to be the coach’s son. It may not matter who is under center if the running game is as pathetic as last season, when the Buffaloes averaged only 87.9 rushing yards per game on an abysmal 2.8 yards per carry. As for Colorado State, they have a solid and deep defensive front seven that can pressure Hansen if the Buffs can’t establish a running game to keep the Rams’ defense honest.

Akron +8½ over Syracuse: Both of these programs are coming off of disappointing seasons, but both are also heading in the right direction and should show some improvement this season. Syracuse may be a bit further along, but are they so much better than last year that they merit being favored by more than a touchdown on the road here? After all, this is still a team that was 4-8 last season is now starting an inexperienced sophomore quarterback and returns only two starters on the offensive line. Conversely, the offensive line is one of Akron’s strengths, and the Zips switching their defense to a 4-3 formation suits their personnel better.

Bowling Green +14 over Troy: This line is understandable when you consider this is a rebuilding year for Bowling Green, especially after losing record-breaking wide receiver Freddie Barnes, who set an NCAA mark last season with an amazing 155 receptions. That said, the Troy defense looks vulnerable, especially in the front seven, and their shaky run defense makes them a risky proposition laying two touchdowns. This is especially true since running back Willie Geter is the most experienced returnee to the BGSU offense, so the Falcons may actually establish a running game here after passing non-stop last season.

Cincinnati +2½ over Fresno State: Some people consider the fact that Coach Brian Kelly jumped ship for the greener pastures at Notre Dame after guiding Cincinnati to a perfect 12-0 regular season as a catastrophe, but remember that his replacement Butch Jones led Central Michigan to two MAC titles and three bowl games in three years there, and the Bearcats still have the best offense in the Big East. As much respect as we have for Pat Hill and the Fresno State program, they will have a tough time replacing running back Ryan Mathews, who is an immediate starter in the NFL with the Chargers, and the Bulldogs’ shaky secondary should get exposed often by the potent Cats.

UCLA has won five consecutive season openers, beating some pretty darn good teams in the process (Utah, Tennessee and Stanford, to name three). But the Bruins won’t have it easy as they travel to Manhattan to take on Bill Snyder’s Kansas State Wildcats to open up their 2010 campaign.

Rick Neuheisel’s squad was besieged with injuries in each of the last two seasons, and so far, this year is no exception. In fact, you could make an argument that no team in all of college football has been besieged with injuries and attrition more than UCLA has since the start of fall camp.

Starting quarterback Kevin Prince has been limited since the first day of practice, suffering from a slightly torn back muscle. There are legitimate concerns about Prince’s ability to shake off the rust, and throw tight, accurate passes against a live defense, without the full complement of practice time in recent weeks. And with UCLA looking to incorporate elements of the ‘Pistol’ offense in 2010 (called the ‘Revolver’ in UCLA terminology), Prince’s lack of practice time isn’t going to help their offensive efficiency here.

Prince’s injury is just the tip of the iceberg for the Bruins, with significant injury concerns on both sides of the line of scrimmage. The Bruins will be missing Xavier Su’a Filo (mission), Jeff Baca (academics), Nik Abele (neck) and Kai Maiava (ankle). Tackle Mike Harris has been suspended for the opener and Stanley Hasiek flunked out of school. Eddie Williams has missed a bunch of practice time with concussion issues, although he is expected to suit up.

The injuries and attrition don’t end there. Star DE Datone Jones – their only returning starter on the defensive line – broke his foot in practice. That’s bad news against a Kansas State offense that averaged 179 yards per game on the ground last year and returns star running back Daniel Thomas for his senior year.

Last year, when UCLA beat Kansas State 23-9 in Bill Snyder’s first test against a BCS opponent, star kicker Kai Forbath was the hero, nailing three long field goals. The 2009 Lou Groza Award winner (best kicker in college), Forbath has been unable to practice with a groin injury and may not be able to suit up here either.

Kansas State senior QB Carson Coffman won the starting job in camp, but his gameplay last year left much to be desired. The Wildcats suffered major graduation losses to their receiving corps as well – expect plenty of hand-offs to Thomas here. K-State went 5-1 at home last year (only loss to Missouri), and they have the capacity to get past this depleted UCLA roster on Saturday. 2* Take Kansas State (#172).

The bottom line in this game, a Big 10 team playing a Sun Belt team should always be a favorite, and Minny is 6-2 ATS their last 8 versus the Sun Belt conference. The KEY in this game is that Middle Tennessee who is a GOOD football team, has lost the services of all world QB Dwight Dasher to suspension. We was the 7th ranked offensive player in total yard production in 2009 and will be sorely missed. I liken it to the San Fran 49ers losing Joe Montana right before the Super Bowl. Minnesota has some issues on defense, but their offense is led by Adam Weber making his 39th start at QB and the guy can flat out get it done. Minnesota also has been known to be a bankable team over the years in their openers going 7-1 the last 8 years SU. Without Dasher at QB for MTSU in this one, and a JUCO transfer starting his first division I game against a BCS school, I like Minnys chances here to outscore MTSU on the road and win by 8 to 10 points. Make no bones about it this Washington State team has been horrendous the past two seasons posting a 3-22 record. They were 9-15 ATS and the linesmaker knows he has to increase the tariff in order to get action on the Cougars. That said, this is the third year of Paul Wulff’s system and there is a light at the end of the tunnel. There are 15 returning starters including the quarterback and the line play is really improving. For those that follow football closely you are well aware that the game is won and lost in the trenches and this team is getting better and better on the lines. In fact, the defensive line has been the strength of the team in camp.

While we like the improvement of the Cougars the real reason we look to take the underdog here is that Oklahoma State lost a ton of talent in the offseason. They return just eight starters and 11 players will be making their very first starts of their college careers. As many as 10 true freshmen could see action Saturday for the Cowboys. In addition to the huge graduation losses Oklahoma State has lost three defensive players in the two deep to season ending injuries. They have also lost three middle linebackers for the season. After improving from 28.1 ppg allowed in 2008 to 21.7 ppg permitted last season we expect a huge jump in points allowed this year. The Cowboys were a combined 18-8 the last two seasons but you can argue that no other team in the country can match the Cowboy losses.

With so many new faces on the roster it’s virtually impossible for head coach Mike Gundy to have his team hitting on all cylinders this early in the season. Last year the Cowboys were double digit favorites four times posting a 1-3 spread record, the only spread win was against non-FBS squad Grambling State. Not only did the Cowboys struggle to put away the opposition, but they lost outright hosting Houston as a 15 point favorite. In fact, against regularly lined teams Oklahoma State lost to the spread when favored by double digits by a combined 56 points! Gundy will be looking to play a lot of players in this game to get a better idea of what he has before hosting a solid Troy team next week. What should be a great match-up of two quality lefthanders is skewed a bit by the fact that the Yanks have been so incredibly dominant at home against this Oakland club. There is also some interesting recent history here as Oakland’s Dallas Braden and the Yanks’ Alex Rodriguez engaged in a war of words on April 22 after Braden criticized Rodriguez for crossing over the mound on his way back to first base following a foul ball. The two have since made amends and A-Rod will not be facing Braden tonight because the All-Star third baseman is on the DL with an injured calf muscle which fortunately hasn’t hurt the team too much as the Yanks have won four straight games heading into Wednesday night’s action. It’s rare that CC Sabathia doesn’t put up a quality start for his team, and even when he doesn’t, the Yanks can still find a way to win the game, as was the case in his last start as the big southpaw threw in a clunker in Chicago against the White Sox last Saturday but New York still came out victorious. Last we saw the Warriors, they were getting smeared on their own turf by a finely tuned Wisconsin team that went on to secure a Champs Sports Bowl victory against Miami. The Warriors closed as 12-point home underdogs in that aforementioned game, ultimately losing by a 51-10 final tally. With 12 starters back from last year’s 6-7 team, the Warriors now find themselves three TD underdogs in their home opener against the mighty USC Trojans. Are they still really that mighty though? The defense faltered dramatically in ‘09, while the offense looked to be a shell of its former self. Throw all the NCAA Sanctions drama into the mix along with new HC Lane Kiffin and the gang, and I simply have no answer as to why JQP has bet this line up from the opener of 18. On principal alone I must fade Kiffin in his first go round as head coach of the Trojans after he left Knoxville high and dry. Serves him right to be forced to deal with the carnage left from the Carroll regime. Hawaii will have problems containing the Trojans ground attack, but I foresee them hanging in against the passing game since they boast an experienced and chippy secondary. USC survives its trip to the island, but the Warriors represent well and hang within this absurd pointspread.

USC is a team in disarray and after the NCAA brought the hammer down on the Trojans, this season was going to likely be a tough one. However, despite playing for nothing I think USC comes out of the gates strong as simply as a matter of pride more than anything else. The team is going to likely struggle for the next couple years more so than this year because of the loss of future scholarships. This is a statement game for USC.

Hawaii was on top of the world just a couple years ago as it boasted one of the best offenses in the country while putting together a combined 23-4 record in 2006 and 2007. Head coach June Jones decided to leave after the 2007 season and it has not been the same as the Warriors have gone 13-14 in the two years since under head coach Greg McMakin. Hawaii brings back just 12 starters from last season and a lot of the rebuilding spots are key positions.

The Trojans offense should start right where it left off last season. They finished 55th and 64th respectively in total offense and scoring offense and those are not typical USC rankings. However they Trojans were hit hard with injuries and were also starting a freshman at quarterback Matt Barkley. Barkley was average but again, he was just a freshman and that year of experience will be a huge benefit this season. He has an experienced line in from and a great running game behind him.

Head coach Lane Kiffin brought some baggage with him but he also brought in his father Monte Kiffin to run the defense. The stop unit was average as well but the front seven will be vastly improved after a year of inexperience set them back. The secondary is an area of concern as all four starters have to be replaced. However cornerback Shareece Wright, who was academically ineligible last season, is back for his senior season and is their best cover corner.

Hawaii will be more than ready for this game, especially at home but top to bottom it cannot compete with the Trojans even though the team is thin with injuries and transfers. The Trojans also fall into a solid situation that has been profitable for years. Play against home teams that allowed a 58 percent or worse completion percentage and with five offensive starters returning, in the first month of the season. This situation is 33-4 ATS (89.2 percent) over the last 10 seasons. The Trojans are 22-7 ATS in their last 29 non-conference games. 3* USC Trojans. Indianapolis Colts - The Colts are once again the favorites to win the Super Bowl, and for good reason. They started off at 14-0 last season before taking their foot off of the gas pedal, and had they continued to rally during the end of the season, they might have become the second 16-0 regular season team in NFL history. QB Peyton Manning might be 34 years old now, but he is coming off of a year in which he threw for 4,500 yards and 33 TDs. As long as he is upright, the Colts are contenders.

San Diego Chargers - Though we aren’t so sure if the Chargers really have the grit to win the Super Bowl, there is no doubt that these are fantastic odds, all things considered. The Bolts have the easiest road to a division title of any team in football (save perhaps the Saints), and they have the easiest schedule amongst division winners in the game as well this year. There is no excuse not to win at least a dozen games and take a first round bye in the playoffs, and anything less than the No. 1 overall seed in the AFC would be disappointing.

New Orleans Saints - Are the Saints being disrespected as the fifth choice on the board to win the Super Bowl this year? The defending champs have the most explosive offense in the league without a doubt, and much like San Diego, there really shouldn’t be any doubt about the fact that this team is making the playoffs and opening them up with a home game. QB Drew Brees might be the most underrated player in the league, and that’s saying something for a man that just led his team to a Super Bowl title.

Baltimore Ravens - With QB Ben Roethlisberger suspended for the first month of the season, the Ravens have a golden opportunity to get back atop the AFC North. Though this is a team known for its defense, the offense is as strong as it has looked, potentially since the team has moved to Baltimore. The addition of WR Anquan Boldin gives QB Joe Flacco a second huge target to throw to, and with RB Ray Rice and RB Willis McGahee making up one of the most dangerous rushing tandems in the league, scoring 24+ points per game seems like a legitimate possibility.

San Francisco 49ers - Sure, the Niners are a bit of a longshot to win it all, but someone has to win the NFC West, right? San Fran seems like the most likely candidate to get the job done, and it will have a chance in the playoffs just like Arizona did two years ago if it gets there. QB Alex Smith will have a full year with WR Michael Crabtree under his belt, and the offensive line got beefed up through the NFL Draft, as both OLs Mike Iupati and Anthony Davis should become immediate starters.

So imagine how thrilled the Reds must be that, after back to back poor efforts on August 10 and 21 (making it three out four starts that were sub-par), Cueto came out in his last outing on August 27, and threw a gem - eight innings with one run on six hits with eight strikeouts and no walks - against the Cubs at home. Now he can make it two in a row and really put some demons and doubts behind him as his team will need him to be sharp in this last month of the season with the NL Central race likely coming down to the wire. He’s in a great position to do just that as Cincy has been absolutely dominant against the Brewers lately, taking eight of the last nine contests heading into this series. And his team is facing a lefthander in Chris Narveson who, despite a winning record (10-7) has really struggled keeping men off the basepaths this season which has resulted in a career-worst 5.52 ERA heading into this, his 23rd start of the season. After being the underdog in the first two games of this series, the Rockies are now the favorites and for good reason. Colorado won the opener of this series before dropping Game Two last night and that makes this game rather important. Colorado is seven games behind the slumping Padres in the National League West and while that deficit may not be able to be come back from, the Wild Card race is wide open. The Rockies are 4.5 games back with San Francisco being three games up on them.

The Giants are hanging around in the division as they trail the Padres by four games but they have been unable to take advantage of the San Diego skid, which has now reached six games. San Francisco simply is not playing well and it has been unable to put any sort of run together. Since a four-game winning streak at the end of July and start of August, the Giants are only 11-15 in their last 26 games while winning consecutive games only three times. One of the reasons have been struggles from their ace.

Tim Lincecum has hit a rough patch of late with four straight non-quality efforts. None have even been close to good as he has posted a dismal 9.00 ERA in those four games with the Giants going 0-4 in those games. He has had some trouble with Colorado this season as in two starts he is 0-2 with a 5.40 ERA and 2.06 WHIP. Colorado has actually been his biggest nemesis throughout his career as he has the highest ERA against the Rockies of any team that he has made at least five starts against.

Colorado goes with its ace Ubaldo Jimenez and after a small bump in the road, he is mowing them down once again. After a six-game stretch where he posted a 7.64 ERA, Jimenez has since tossed six straight quality starts while putting up a 2.57 ERA over those games. He has been a tough luck loser as run support has fallen off but this is the prime opportunity for the Rockies to gets the bats going. His 2.31 road ERA is best in the National League for all qualified starters.

Colorado is 10-2 in its last 12 games following a loss as well as going 14-2 in Jimenez’ last 16 starts when coming off a loss in its previous game. 3* Colorado Rockies

Pick: Angels vs. Mariners Over 7.5 (Jim Feist)
This is a low total for an American League game. Normally you have at least one ace with a total like this, and yet for this game we’re looking at No. 4 and 5 starters. Jason Vargas of the Mariners has bene struggling, with a 6.52 ERA his last three starts. The Angels come to town forced to go with Trevor Bell (5.07 ERA), who has below average stuff with opponents hitting .315 off him. He is 0-3 on the road with an ERA over 5, 4-1-1 over the total his last six road starts. Look for an offensive show, play the Angels/Mariners Over the total.

Pick: Los Angeles Angels +109 (Rob Vinciletti)
On Wednesday the free play is on the LA. Angels. Game 929 at 10:10 eastern. The Angels apply to a nice system that plays on road dogs that are off a road dog loss and scored 2 or less runs and 5 or more hits and 5 or more left on base, vs an opponent off home favored win that scored 4 or more runs and won by 2 or more runs with a posted total of 8 or less. LA has won 6 of 8 here this year. Seattle is batting a shade over .200 the past week and they are a lousy 12-28 in divisional play. When installed as a home favorite in this range the Mariners are a money burning 4-9. Look for the Angels to get the win here tonight. Pick: San Diego Padres -132 (Robbie Gainous)
The San Diego Padres and Arizona Diamondbacks square-off in Game 3 of their series on Wednesday night in the desert. The Padres are 38-18 versus teams with a losing record including 12-5 when playing on the road in this situation. They are also a perfect 9-0 when Latos takes the bump on the road versus teams with a losing record. San Diego is 14-4 when playing in Game 3 of a series this season and Arizona is 9-24 in Game 3’s. One final note for the Padres we see they are 6-0 when Mike Everitt is behind home plate calling balls and strikes. Lay the chalk with the visitor as San Diego gets another Game 3 victory and Arizona falls victim to recent history once more.

The Jays exploded for 13 runs in yesterday’s game. With David Price on the mound, they’re unlikely to come anywhere close to that number this evening. Price has been exceptional all season and the Rays are 17-8 (+4.4) in his 25 starts.

Marcum is also enjoying a very solid season for the Jays and has pitched well recently. However, his 4.14 ERA on the road doesn’t compare to Price’s 2.26 ERA at home.

The price may seem a bit steep but the Rays have simply been that good at home the past few seasons. Note that they’re a highly profitable 66-21 (+32.1) the last 87 times that they were listed as home favorites in the -150 to -175 range.

Even with yesterday’s loss, the Rays are also still 20-6 the last 26 times that they hosted the Jays. Additionally, the Rays are a perfect 6-0 when Price has started against the Jays. Price was 5-0 with a superb 2.09 ERA in those games. Price has already gotten the better of Marcum twice this season (Rays won by scores of 7-3 at Toronto and 10-1 here at Tampa) and has allowed just one earned run in 23 innings against Toronto this season. Consider laying the wood.

I typically don’t play the fourth week of NFL pre-season, and other than this one selection, that will be the case again this year; for a number of different reasons I believe the value in this contest is on the home side:

Seattle went 4-0 ATS in the 2009 pre-season; so far this year its gone 1-2 ATS, winning in Week 1, but dropping its last two pre-season tilts.

It lost 24-13 to the Vikes last week; although its defense looked decent, its offense was out of sorts and I believe that will once again be the case in the pre-season finale.

Matt Hasselbeck completed nine of 17 passes for 126 yards; he was sacked twice and hit two other times.

Seattle’s offensive line was a weakness last year, and it continues to be an area of concern that this team will have to deal with and address once again this season.

On the other side of the field: Oakland went 2-2 ATS in the 2009 pre-season; so far this year its gone 2-1 ATS, winning both ATS and SU in Weeks one and two, but falling 28-24 to the 49′ers last week as 1 1/2 point favorites.

Bruce Gradkowski had a solid outing last week after starter Jason Campbell went down with in jury; he threw for 202 yards with two TD’s.

The Raiders backup looked fantastic against the 49′ers first team defense; San Fran allowed three TD’s and committed ten penalties.

Coach Tom Cable on his teams effort; “There’s too many ups and downs in this football game for us to be who we need to be to succeed,” Cable said. “A lot to learn from it, and that’s a good thing. I’m glad it happened now as opposed to a few weeks from now.”

“It felt like just where I left off,” Gradkowski said. “It was exciting. It feels so great to be out there and playing and competing. We have a really good football team and we’re excited about it.”

Bottom line: The Seahawks led 13-10 after three quarters last week, but Seattle’s reserves allowed two TD’s in the final quarter; “We played really solid for three quarters, and again like last week our guys that were in at the end can’t hold a lead,” coach Pete Carroll said. “So that’s unfortunate.”

Expect the Oakland reserves to better the Seattle backups; home field advantage also can’t be overlooked in this case; consider a second look at the RAIDERS in this situation.

John Holiday could get this program moving in the right direction as he is a notable recruiter, but for now he has to live with some pieces that don’t belong in Columbus for week one.
