Internet fraud: EFCC arrests 60, convicts 37 in A’Ibom

The Uyo Zonal Office of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) said it had arrested over 60 suspected internet fraudsters and secured 37 convictions since 2017 in the state.

The Zonal Head of the Commission, Mr Garba Dugum, disclosed this while briefing newsmen in Uyo on Tuesday.

Dugum, who was represented by the Deputy Zonal Head, Alex Ebbah, said EFCC was collaborating with
the America’s Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) in the fight against cyber crimes.

Dugum said the directives by the acting Chairman of the commission, Ibrahim Magu, to launch an independent raid against the fraudsters culminated in various strategic raids and onslaught on their hideouts.

“In furtherance to the acting Chairman’s directive to all the zones, we have independently launched intensive investigative actions against this infamous “Yahoo Yahoo Boys” culmination in various strategic raids and onslaught on their hideouts.

“Our efforts in this regards have recorded tremendous success which resulted in over 60 arrests, 37 convictions and recovery of exotic cars and properties suspected to have been acquired through the proceeds of the crimes,” he said.

Dugum said the commission had gone beyond arrest, investigation, prosecution and conviction of internet fraudsters.

He said the commission now embark on sensitization programmes to educate the youth on the implications and the need to stay away from the crime.

South Africa: What you need to know about ‘xenophobic attacks’

The xenophobic attack on Nigerians and other foreigners in South Africa is the major topic of discourse on the lips of everyone due to the recent spate of violent and deadly attacks.

This episode of violence has
prompted a flurry of high-level condemnations and criticisms from international bodies and government officials across various countries.
The violence echoes sporadic outbreaks of attacks mainly targeting migrants from other African countries in some of South Africa’s poorest areas.

It should be recalled that in 2008 and 2015, the world was horrified by the savage scenes of xenophobic violence towards African immigrants in South Africa despite the unprecedented support provided by African countries during South Africa’s struggle to end ‘apartheid’.
Prior to 1994, immigrants from different countries faced discrimination and even violence in South Africa.

After majority rule in 1994, contrary to expectations, the incidence of xenophobia increased. Between 2000 and March 2008, at least 67 people died as a result of the incessant xenophobic attacks.

What is ‘xenophobic violence’

Xenophobic violence refers to any act/acts of violence, perpetrated by local communities or groups against an individual or group of individuals, based on the perception that the victim/victims of this violence do not belong to the perpetrators’ community, society or nationality.

The attacks towards foreign nationals or perceived outsiders are often expressed in the forms of murder, assaults, intimidation and harassment.

Such attacks can include arson attacks on non-nationals and/or their property or the looting and robbery of non-nationals’ shops.
These xenophobic attacks occur across all nine provinces of South Africa, while the Western Cape, Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal, Free State, Limpopo, Mpumalanga and the Eastern Cape are mostly affected.

Reason for ‘xenophobic violence’

One of the many reasons advanced by some South Africans for their anger towards black Africans since the xenophobic violence of 2008 and 2015 is that ‘foreigners are taking jobs from indigenes in the country’.

A Pew Research poll conducted in 2018 showed that 62% of South Africans viewed immigrants as a burden on society by taking jobs and social benefits and that 61% of South Africans thought that immigrants were more responsible for crime than other groups.

South Africa’s Legal Obligation to Protect Foreign Nationals

South Africa has ratified numerous international instruments that place an onus on the country to ensure that it provides protection against all forms of discrimination, including xenophobia and xenophobic violence.

In accordance with this legislation, refugees and asylum seekers in South Africa are legally entitled to the same rights as South African citizens, except for the right to vote.

However, with the ongoing situation, the South African Government must send out a ‘strong message’ to its citizens that ‘hostility towards non-nationals should not acceptable under any circumstances’.

ANDY Ruiz Jr has set off to meet Anthony Joshua face-to-face for the first time since becoming world heavyweight champion, shortly after hitting back at his
critics for ‘talking s***’.

Ruiz tweeted a picture of himself and his coach Manny Robles after they boarded a flight to Saudi Arabia.
It has been a topsy-turvy few weeks for the Mexican, who has had to deal with criticisms over his ‘partying lifestyle’ in the wake of his victory over Joshua.
Ruiz Jnr first hit back at Tyson Fury after the latter claimed he had been partying too much following his shock victory in New York. He had returned to training ahead of an agreed rematch in Saudi Arabia in December but Fury believes he had been living the high-life too much since.
The former heavyweight champion said: ‘If Andy Ruiz comes in in-shape and has trained, then I think he does the same again.

”But one thing I know is AJ trains hard and he dedicates his life to boxing. I know that Ruiz had been running around in Rolls Royces and doing a lot of TV shows, eating a lot of tacos and he’s not been in the gym for two-and-a-half months. I’ve been speaking to the guys and nobody’s seen him.”
But Ruiz insists he will be ready to take on Joshua and beat him again in December.
”Everyone’s gonna say this and that, but at the end of the day they don’t know s*** but what they see on Instagram,” he said. ”We working. I want them to sleep on me again and think I’m just partying. We coming hard.”

JAMB to use NIN for 2020 UTME registration

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board has said it would use the National Identity Number issued by the National Identity Management Commission for the conduct of 2020 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination.

JAMB Registrar, Prof Is-haq Oloyede, stated this when the Director of the Bureau of Public Service Reforms, Mr Dasuki Arabi, visited him at the headquarters of
the board in Abuja.
He said the introduction of the NIN to UTME was in line with the directive of the Federal Government that NIMC should be the primary data collection centre.
He noted that the NIN would guard against all forms of registration infractions.
The registrar, in a statement by the agency’s Head of Information, Dr. Fabian Benjamin on Sunday in Abuja, said the board has concluded arrangements with the NIMC to use NIN number as a pilot for 2020 UTME.
Oloyede said the board would use both the NIN number and its Computer Based Test Centres for the 2020 UTME registration.

Oloyede said: “In view of the compliance with the Federal Government’s directive that the NIMC should be the primary data collection centre, the board will be using the NIM number of prospective candidates for registration in the next exercise. The board is at the moment discussing with the NIMC to work out the grey areas for seamless implementation in the next exercise.”
The BPSR DG, Arabi, urged JAMB to take advantage of the Self-Assessment Tool developed by the bureau to strengthen its capacity and render quality service to the public.

He said: “The SAT facility enables organisations to assess themselves in terms of what they have done or not done. By so doing, gaps can be identified and solutions proffered in real time. The President has directed agencies to work together so as to improve the quality of services that are offered.

“We are coming to work with JAMB and the NIMC to support and encourage them to migrate to the nation’s data ecosystem just the way the Nigerian Immigration Service has done.”

Lagos to youths: take advantage of World Bank’s N200m cash

The Lagos State Commissioner for Agriculture, Prince Gbolahan Lawal has urged youths to take advantage of the World Bank – assisted N200 million agro processing, productivity enhancement and livelihood improvement support (APPEALS) project to create jobs and ensure food and nutrition security.

He spoke at the screening
of shortlisted applicants for the project in Lagos on Tuesday.
Lawal said agriculture and agribusiness have an invaluable and untapped potential to address youth unemployment.
According to him, Lagos has been involved in the last 20 years in several initiatives to accelerate youth employment in agriculture and agribusiness.

The main focus of the government, he explained, is to provide technical assistance, capacity development and knowledge exchange to youth enterprises by prioritising agricultural value chains.
He said integrating youth in agriculture and agribusiness is a key priority for the state government, adding that as such, the government is promoting youth employment and self-employment as part of the development momentum.
On APPEALS, he said the goal of the project is to increase productivity and improve processing and marketing of targeted value chains, which included rice, poultry and aquaculture for Lagos.
He explained that of 10,000 applications, 2000 people were shortlisted, including the physically challenged.

He assured that the beneficiaries will be supported to contribute to the restoration of agricultural livelihoods in the state.

The State Project Coordinator, Mrs. Oluranti Oviebo said the project is meant to improve food security and nutrition and increase the incomes of households.
According to her, the project is designed to promote poverty reduction amongst producers to enable inclusive economic growth and sustainable livelihoods development.
The National Programme Officer, Dr Salisu Garba said the APPEALS are implemented in six states of the federation.
Aside Lagos, others are Kano, Kogi, Kaduna, Enugu and Cross Rivers states.

Xenophobia: Tiwa Savage cancels performance in South Africa

Nigerian singer, Tiwa Savage has cancelled her performance in South Africa saying that she would no longer be performing at a festival scheduled to hold in Johannesburg later this month.

Tiwa made this
known on Wednesday via Twitter. She described the attacks on Nigerians and other nationals in South Africa as "sick" and said that was the reason, she would not be participating in the festival sponsored by South Africa-owned firm, DSTV.

She tweeted, “I refuse to watch the barbaric butchering of my people in SA. This is SICK. For this reason, I will NOT be performing at the upcoming DSTV delicious Festival in Johannesburg on the 21st of September. My prayers are with all the victims and families affected by this.”

Poor electricity: EKSU students take new VC to task

For many years, electricity has been a rare commodity for students of the Ekiti State University (EKSU), particularly those residing in Satellite-Phase Two, School Gate, and Iworoko areas. All previous attempts at improving supply seemed to have defied solutions. But a new vice chancellor supposedly familiar with the terrain is in office.The students are urging him to work with the government to end their frustrations. ADEGUNLE OLUGBAMILA and RACHEAL DAMILOLA, 300-Level student of Linguistics, report:

For how long will students of the Ekiti State University (EKSU) grapple with the challenge of poor electricity supply? This is the question on the lips of the students.

The state-owned institution domiciled in Iworoko-Ekiti, Ekiti State, was
established in 1982 as an off-campus institution. With over 20,000 student population; nearly all students live off campus, with majority spread across Satellite-Phase Two, School Gate and Iworoko areas.The school has two hostels that could hardly accommodate 70 students.

Majority of students living at the aforementioned locations have indeed had their fair share of poor power supply. Their complaints range from theft of their personal effects, inability to use power to charge phones or conduct individual or group study, particularly at night, fear of being kidnapped at nightfall and general insecurity, among others.

Interestingly, the management also finds the issue of power a harder nut to crack, saying the poor power situation in those areas is almost as old as the institution established 37 years ago, and may therefore need a political solution more than mere theorising.

Thankfully last week, the government of Ekiti State announced a new vice chancellor, Prof Edward Olanipekun. Not only has Olanipekun spent nearly three decades in the institution before transferring his service to the University of Ibadan, many within and outside the institution believe that with an insider like Olanipekun, and a more- focused government in the saddle, the two parties could team up to break the power jinx that has for long afflicted the host community and environs.

Incidentally, for about four years now, the power situation at Satellite-Phase II and School Gate has become more complex with students having to do nearly everything in pitch darkness.

Students who spoke to CAMPUSLIFE lamented their predicament; no thanks to the seeming helplessness of the management of EKSU and the affected communities.

Students share ordeals

“This situation is so disheartening and not encouraging at all,” says Aluko Ifeoluwa, a 200-Level student of Economics residing in Los Angeles hostel, Phase II.

“Can you imagine,” Ifeoluwa continued, “to charge a cell phone costs N50 everyday! If we multiply that by seven days, it equals N350 per week. If we do the calculation in a month, it is N1,50 0 in a month and N9,000 for one academic session. Is that not outrageous and unfair to us and our parents? Eksuites (students of EKSU) are suffering and the school management does not seem to care about our plights. Things are not like that in other schools. We have friends there. We are pleading with the new management to find practical solutions to this power failure’’.

Students from rich or middle class background can afford to buy power generator while hustlers like us have to endure the outrageous noise and smoke some of the generators emit, laments Ademodi Okikijesu, a 300-Level Linguistics undergraduate who lives in God is Good hostel, Phase Two.

“During exams period, we can’t even read in the hostels we paid for; reason being that the generators make so much noise that we can hardly assimilate.” Another 300-Level student of Physics who prefers to remain anonymous corroborated Ademodi.

The source continued: “During my 200-Level second semester exam, I was supposed to write a paper by 11:30am, but that paper was rescheduled to 8:30 due to a clash. Unfortunately, I wasn’t aware the exam had been brought forward because my phone had a flat battery; only for me to get to school around 11am and saw my classmates emerging from the examination hall. I ended up having a carryover (CO) and that course was a three-unit course. Everything was a consequence of power failure. It was a saddening experience, one that I’ll live to remember.”

“From my point of view,” says Kenneth Omotayo, another 300-Level Chemistry undergraduate residing in Phase Two, “I think the blackout has really reduced the level of motivation to study; and when motivation and comfort are not there, then our study process becomes difficult. I beseech the new management and the Ekiti State government to do something about it because despite the odds, students still strive to make this university proud by making good grades.”

“How can we learn smoothly in an environment that’s not conducive to learning?” Oyindamola (surname withheld), a third year Linguistics student residing in Suncity Phase two asks rhetorically.

“How can we read without power supply? Charging of lamps and phones is usually impossible. How do we even make a better use of a university without power?”

Agbeye Onaopemipo, a 500-Level Law student residing in Alva Hood hostel at Osekita, also lent his voice.

“This issue has really affected me a lot, from the heat to risking my gadgets while charging them.”

Onaopemipo continued: “Back home I don’t sleep without light, but getting to EKSU, I had to adapt to sleeping in the dark. As a Law student, I’m expected to dress corporately every day in my white and black uniform. I definitely need iron for straightening out the clothes; but that has only been impossible for obvious reasons. So some of the time Law students appear in school in rumpled clothes.

“Charging our lamps is another headache too. Sadly enough, we have been compelled to adapt to the use of lanterns or candles for study purposes, and this is 21st Century, not minding the risks those things pose. Virtually all students on campus use a smart phone too. Ninety nine per cent of school activities ranging from lecture, examination, and even checking of result is posted on the school’s dysfunctional portal.”

Similarly, a final year Computer Science undergraduate, Olotu Moses, recalled how he lost four of his handsets to thieves in the process of charging them.

“The lack of electricity is affecting me in a lot of ways,” Moses moans.

“For example, my phone has been stolen four different times while charging around. In fact, it has affected a whole lot of students. Some have even joined bad gangs all because they want to run generator always like their mates. They don’t want to be going from one room to another or staying outside in the cold all in the name of charging. As students, we can’t even use electric cooker. We can’t come back from school in the sun,shower and turn on the fan.

“Most times when I’m supposed to be reading, which I really love doing, I will have to go from one hostel to another in order to charge my gadget, even after a strenuous day at school,” adds another student who simply introduced herself as Mojisola.

“The funny thing is that I really hate reading with lamp or candle. My assimilation rate seems to lessen the moment the lamp dims; but I tend to read well and do better when I use electricity.”

Likewise, Ayodeji Gbolagade, another final year Accounting undergraduate and a resident of Phase Two shares his experience: “Something happened during my 100-Level days. I went with my lamp on a night reading in school. As I was ready to return to the hostel at dawn, I discovered my bag containing my phone, laptop and power bank had been stolen. All I had left in school that morning were my books and lamp. I strongly believe if the whole place were illuminated that day, the thief wouldn’t have had his way. “

The problem is intricate, says management

Reacting to the development, EKSU PRO, Mr Deji Aleshinloye, said the power problem has become intricate and may therefore require political solutions.

“I graduated from EKSU about 10 years ago and this issue you are talking about was there during our time,” Aleshinloye began.

“”Iworoko alone accommodates about 5000 of our students. That community has a longstanding problem with electricity supply. The issue is quite complicated and multi-faceted. It ranged from arrears owed PHCN, to poor or non-functional transformer, bad poles, among others.

“As a university, we are quite responsive and we sympathise with our students over their predicament, Nonetheless, there is little the management can do about it.

“All those communities you mentioned are outside our jurisdiction. Much as we appreciate what our students go through, the university cannot take on the responsibility of those communities by simply dipping its hands into its coffers to pay a part of the bills. “I can tell you that over time, successive management had made efforts to alleviate the suffering of our students. There was a time the immediate past government attempted to build more hostels within the university premises through build, operate and transfer (BOT) platform. Unfortunately, it was during this problem with forex then and that project, located at the back of the Students’ Union building, was stalled at the foundation level till date.

“Our happiness is that the government has just appointed a new vice chancellor who had been with us for almost 30 years before he transferred his service to the University of Ibadan. Now, we are getting it right because our new vice chancellor knows the terrain quite well. Our vice chancellor and the Governor are on the same page. If the plight of students can get to the Governor through the new management, I strongly believe some positive results will begin to evolve.”

Strike: FG, ASUU agree on some contentious iss

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) says it has agreed to consider the federal government’s offer and suspend their strike.

There were indications late on Thursday that the Federal Government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities had agreed on some demands of the union in the efforts to resolve the strike by the lecturers.

The meeting, which began around 1.30pm, ended around 11pm as both parties were initially adamant to shift grounds on some contentious
issues.

Our correspondent learnt as of press time that a memorandum had been signed by both ASUU and the government.

In attendance on the government’s side were the Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr. Chris Ngige; the Minister of Education, Mallam Adamu Adamu; and the Minister of State for Education, Prof. Anthony Anwuka.

The ASUU nine-man delegation was led by the union President, Prof. Biodun Ogunyemi.

Earlier, the education minister, Adamu, identified the contentious issues as earned academic allowances and the revitalisation of public universities.

“Most of the issues between the government and the union have already been dealt with. The two most important and contentious issues are the earned allowances and the revitalisation of
university system.

“We have already reached an agreement on one and we hope to reach an agreement on the other,” the minister added.

Also, labour minister, Ngige, said the meeting would “break down the areas of mistrust” between the government and the union.

He said, “We last met on August 17 and we agreed you would get back to your members and you would give us your proposal. Between then and now, a lot of things have happened and some contacts and meetings were held between you and the Minister of Education.

“Some appreciable and tangible results were achieved. We are convening this meeting with this in mind; to smooth the rough edges and enable you to call off this strike, which will be one month in a matter of days. This will not augur well for the academic calendar of universities.

“We want to address and break down the areas of mistrust between us.”

The ASUU President, Ogunyemi, said, “Once we are able to resolve the contentious issues, we are willing to go back to our members in earnest and take the final decision on this action.”

As of the time of fling this report, the communique between the two parties had yet to be released to journalists.

News gathered that a 100 level civil engineering student of Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, Bauchi (ATBU) is dead.

The beautiful lady Miss Etuk Brian Michelle reportedly died from medical complications from an accident she had while travelling back home following the ASUU strike.

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) received with great shock the death of Miss Etuk Brian Michelle, a 100 level student of Civil Engineering at Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, Bauchi.

She had an accident on her way going back to Abuja where she based when ASUU declared indefinite strike.

She lost her life few days of medical complications.

On behalf of NANS, We wish to extend our sincere condolence to her family, May God give her parent the zeal to bear the lost.

We hope the Federal Government and the ASUU will settle their dispute and allow our students to resume back to school with immediate effect.

During the week, it was announced that popular family game show, Who Wants To Be A Million would be back on air with a new sponsor, Airopay.

Saturday Beats reliably gathered that after 13 years of hosting the show, popular broadcaster, Frank Edoho, would be dropped and replaced by someone yet to be unveiled.

An organiser of the show told Saturday Beats that they did not have any problem with Edoho, so it was an amicable agreement.
