23 de febrero, día de oscuras conmemoraciones, un buen día para dibujar.
Los talleres de Barcelona Dibuixa van de museos. A mi grupo le ha tocado el MNAC.
February 23, a day of dark memories, a good day for drawing.
Barcelona Dibuixa workshops go today to the museums and my group goes to the MNAC.

Durante la primera hora nos damos un paseo por la Colección de Arte Moderno. Los alumnos se desperdigan por las salas y tratando de seguir lo que hace cada uno de ellos sólo tengo tiempo para hacer esta pequeña escena.

During the first hour we take a stroll by the Modern Art Collection. Students scatter along the halls and trying to see what they are drawing I just have the time for making this little scene.

Después vamos a dibujar la cúpula del Palacio Nacional de Montjuïc que es donde está ubicado el Museo. Yo hago un boceto de uno de los ángulos. Estoy de pie mirando hacia arriba y forzando el cuello pero mi mano hoy va sola. Según voy dibujando ya pienso cómo colorearé. Como sé que no me dará tiempo hago una foto para fijar el fantástico juego de luces. Aunque aún no está terminado, ya lo haré más tarde en casa, de alguna manera sé que el dibujo ha salido bien.
Tengo la sensación de que hoy ha sido de esos días en que aunque no lo sepan, mis alumnos me han enseñado más que yo a ellos.

Afterwards, we go for drawing the Palacio Nacional de Montjuïc, the building that holds the Museum. I make a sketch of one of the corners, I'm standing forcing my neck looking up but my hand today works by itself. As I'm drawing I think how I'll put the color. As I know I will not have time enough, I take a photo to fix the awesome play of light and shadow. Even if it's not finished and it will be later at home when I'll do it, I know somehow that the drawing has gone right.
I have the feeling that today is one of these days that, even if they don't know, my students have taught me much more than I have taught them.

Otro remake de un dibujo de hace tiempo.
Another remake of a drawing I made some time ago

La idea es de 2005. Como era un poco complicada hice unas guías con lápiz azul antes de la tinta. El tamaño real es más o menos el de una galleta.

The idea is from 2005. As it was a bit complicated I made some guidelines with blue pencil before inking. The real size is more or less one biscuit.

Alguos meses después hice esta versión en papel. No me interesaba tanto la violencia del momento capturada en la primera versión sino las consecuencias, por eso el dibujo refleja lo que ocurre unos segundos después.
Some months after I made this version on paper. I was not so interested on the violence of the moment captured on the first scribble but on the consequences. It's because of this that the drawing shows what happens some seconds after.

Algún listillo quizás aprecie más que vagas influencias del estilo de Ron Cobb, uno de los santos de mi panteón particular (más infromación sobre él aquí).
Some smart ass maybe could appreciate more than vague influences of Ron Cobb, one of the saints of my particular pantheon (more about him here).

En el otoño pasado hice esta versión en el ordenador con masas en vez de tramado.

On the last autumn I made another version on the computer with masses instead of crosshatching.

El sábado pasado nos reunimos para el 39º Sketchcrawl en el 31º Salón del Cómic de Barcelona.
Last saturday we met for the 39º Sketchcrawl at the 31º Salón del Cómic de Barcelona.

La cosa empezó con una conferencia a cargo de Guy Delisle.
It all started with a lecture by Guy Delisle.

Luego me dediqué a dibujar cosplayers. La de la izquierda es Mar que iba de Green Arrow, la de la derecha, Noelia que iba de Poison Ivy.
Afterwards I drew some cosplayers. On the left side, Mar as Green Arrow, on the right side, Noelia as Poison Ivy.

Hice un retrato a Liniers mientras dedicaba libros, luego me lo firmó. La de la derecha es Carol que iba de Black Cat.
I made a portrait of Liniers while he dedicated some books, then he signed it for me. On the right side, Carol as Black Cat.

Por la tarde hubo una mesa redonda sobre cuadernos de viaje con Liniers, Sagar, Florent Chavouet y Guy Delisle.
In the afternoon we went to a panel discussion about travel sketchbooks with Liniers, Sagar, Florent Chavouet and Guy Delisle.

La idea es de finales de 2004. La garabateé del tirón en mi cuaderno.

Siempre pensé que habría una versión definitiva pero no hice nada hasta finales de 2012.

I always thought there should be a definitive version but I did nothing till the end of 2012.

Encuentro dibujero en el Museo Marítimo

El pasado 16 de marzo, con motivo de la reapertura tras una larga temporada de acondicionamiento y restauración, el Museo Marítimo de Barcelona tuvo la gentileza de poner a nuestra disposición su sede para un encuentro de dibujantes. Hubo182 inscritos, todo un éxito. El principal punto de atención era por supuesto la réplica de la Galera Real. Debimos de dibujarla todos.

Drawing meeting at the Museo Maritimo

Last march 16, because of the reopening after a long time of improvement and restoration works, the Museo Maritimo de Barcelona graciously let us its venue for a drawing meeting. There were 182 people, a real success. The main spot was of course the replica of the Galera Real. I guess all of us drew her.

El árbol de los frutos (digamos) de oro

Dicen que España es el sitio ese donde uno trabaja y los demás supervisan. La cosa adquiere un significado especial cuando uno dibuja por trabajo y los demás acompañan por pura diversión. Es lo que pasó hace unas semanas cuando Víctor tuvo que ir a hacer un dibujo de los Pabellones Güell para un libro en el que está trabajando, y unos cuantos decidimos ir con él. Para supervisar (digamos).
Como el chico suele hacerlo bastante bien y había poco que supervisar, nos pusimos también nosotros a dibujar. A mí me atrajo un detalle de la fachada por su curioso diseño de ladrillos y baldosines. La figura alta de la izquierda se supone que era —según alguien me contó de la historia del guarda— el árbol de las manzanas de oro mencionado en el poema L'Atlàntida de Jacint Verdaguer. Algún detalle debió de perderse en las sucesivas versiones porque horas después, al investigar el texto, las manzanas resultaron ser naranjas.

The golden fruits (let's say) tree
They say that Spain is that place where one works while the other supervise. This takes on a special meaning when one draws as a work and the other accompany him for fun. That is what happened some weeks ago when Víctor had to draw the Güell Pavilions for a book on which he is working, and some of us decided to go with him. Mainly to supervise (let's say).
As the guy usually do quite well and there was not so much to supervise, we also started drawing. A detail of the facade took my attraction because of its curious design made of bricks and tiles. The tall figure on the left side was supposed to be —as someone told me from the guard's tale— the golden apple tree mentioned on Jacint Verdaguer's poem L'Atlàntida. Some details must got lost in the succeeding versions because hours after, taking a look at the text, apples ended up being oranges.

La idea original viene de un garabato improvisado en un pequeño cuaderno a finales de 2004. Entonces no solía dibujar tan a menudo en cuadernos como ahora pero siempre llevaba uno encima... por lo que pudiera pasar, verbigracia esto:
The original idea comes from a scribble improvised on a little sketch at the end of 2004. I didn't use to draw on sketchbooks as often as I do now but I always had one with me... just in case, for example this:

En el otoño de 2012 lo volví a dibujar de nuevo en el ordenador. No hice bocetos previos.
Como el tamaño original es bastante grande he aquí unos cuantos detalles, de arriba a abajo y de izquierda a derecha.
In the autumn of 2012 I drew it again on the computer. I didn't make previous sketches.
As the original size is quite large here are some details, top to bottom, left to right.

En los últimos tiempos, a cuenta de la organización del simposium de USk, en Barcelona han proliferado los encuentros en los que se hablaba mucho de dibujeo pero de dibujeo casi nada. Aun así, en alguno de ellos, pocos, logré sacar el cuaderno y garabatear algo.

On the last times, and because of the organization of the USk symposium, meetings about drawing on which almost no drawing was made have proliferated in Barcelona. Even so, in some of them, not so many, I managed to take out the sketchbook and scribble something.

Esto es el remake de un dibujo que hice hace tiempo.
This is a remake of a drawing I made some time ago.

La idea me vino en 2005 en volando de Bolonia a Barcelona. El primer boceto, hecho en el avión era un desastre: tratando de reflejar el contraste de luz y oscuridad emborroné todo.
I had the idea while flying between Bologna and Barcelona. The first sketch, made in the airplane was a disaster: trying to tell the contrast between light and darkness I just smeared everything.

En 2007 lo volví a hacer, esta vez directamente en el ordenador. Acababa de adquirir una Wacom Cintiq y estaba experimentando con ella. Nunca me quedé conforme con esta versión, siempre me ha parecido cuadriculada, rígida y totalmente indigesta.
In 2007 I made it again, this time straight on the computer. I had just bought a Wacom Cintiq and I was trying to get familiar with it. I never got satisfied with this version, I always thought it was squared, stiff and absolutely stodgy.

Como la idea me sigue pareciendo buena, la he vuelto a dibujar. Esta vez hice un par de bocetos.
As I still thin the idea is good, I've drawn it again. This time I made a couple sketches.

Luego escaneé el último y lo redibujé en el ordenador del modo más "analógico" posible.
Then I scanned the last one and redrew it on the computer tryint to be as "analogical" as I could.

Desayuno con Patrizia

Patrizia tiene unas horas en Barcelona y convoca un desayuno dibujero. Es martes, sólo podemos Lapin y yo. Vamos a Can Deu, que es un lugar muy dibujable cerca de su hotel. Hace un buen día y nos tomamos un café en el jardín, no demasiado verde a mitad de febrero.

Breakfast with Patrizia

Patrizia has some free hours in Barcelona and calls for a drawing breakfast. It's tuesday and only Lapin and me are available. We go to Can Deu, a quite draw-able place near her hotel. It's a nice sunny day and we take a coffe at the garden, not too green in the middle of february.

Estos dibujos los hice durante un taller que di en Barcelona. El tema era el transporte urbano y fuimos a dibujar al metro, concretamente a la estación de Espanya. Como me tenía que ocupar de ir dando instrucciones a cada uno de los alumnos, tenía poco tiempo para dibujar así que lo fui robando en trozos de un par de minutos. El color lo puse en casa.

This drawings were made during a workshop I gave in Barcelona. The topic was urban transport and we went to draw in the underground, more specifically Espanya station. As I must pay attention to the attendees and give instructions to each one of them I had few time to draw so I had to steal little pieces of a couple minutes. I put the color at home.

La página de viñetas no tenía ningún proyecto en principio, pero a la mitad entreví una especie de hilo e imaginé los textos. Luego, también en casa, rotulé la página derecha en correspondencia. Se puede leer a tamaño grande en flickr.

The page with frames had no project at the beginning, but in the middle I caught a glimpse od some kind of thread and imagined the texts. Afterwards, also at home, I made the lettering in correspondence. It can be read big size on flickr but for those who don't understand spanish, here is an english version:

Demasiados reyes

En España tenemos 4 reyes. Un único día de cada año tres de ellos se ganan la corona.
Esto lo dibujé el último de esos días cuando estaban entrando en Barcelona. La verdad es que no les hice mucho caso, el verdadero espectáculo estaba en el público.

Too many kings
In Spain we have 4 kings . Just one day per year three of them deserve their crowns.
I drew this the last of those days, when they were entering Barcelona. Actually, I didnt' pay too much attention to them, the real spectacle was in the crowd.

Haciendo el cocinillas

Me gusta dibujar en la cocina. Y me gusta cocinar. Sobre todo me gusta picar verdura, me relaja mucho. Jamás lo hago con robots y demás artefactos siniestros que no quitan tanto tiempo y sí mucha diversión. No soy un experto pero tampoco un dominguero. Cocino muy a menudo, y me resulta agradable incluso como deber. De quien más he aprendido es de Roberta que me enseñó el abecé. Antes de conocerla yo era un soltero de telepizza y fabada Litoral. También debo mucho a Karlos Arguiñano, muy al principio, y a Simone Rugiati, cuando vivía en Bologna. Bueno..., y a Jamie Oliver. Aunque maltrate con saña la cocina española, es un buen comunicador y enseña de forma clara y divertida. Hace ya tiempo que lo poco que veo en la tele son programas de cocina.
Me gusta un poco menos la posguerra que queda a veces y el trabajo de reconstrucción. Nada es gratis.

Playing the scullion

I love to draw in the kitchen and I love to cook. I love specially chopping vegetables, I find it very relaxing. I never do it with robots or any other weird artifacts that do not save so much time and cancel so much fun. I'm not an expert but neither a weekend cook, I do it very often and it's pleasant for me even as a duty. My best teacher was Roberta that taught me the basics. Before I knew her I was a take-away-pizza-and-canned-fabada single. I owe so much also to Karlos Arguiñano, at the very beginning, and Simone Rugiati, when i lived in Bologna. Well..., also to Jamie Oliver. Even if he uses to sadisticly bully the spanish cooking, he is a good communicator and teaches on a very clear and funny way. For some time now the little TV I watch is cooking shows.

I don't love as much the post-war that uses to happen once the meal is finished and the reconstruction work. Nothing is for free.

Por más que uno esté rodeado de amigos, como el año pasado en que había un montón de ibéricos (esto es lo que hicimos el último día y éste fue el resultado), en el Rendez-Vous du Carnet de Voyage de Clermont-Ferrand siempre hay muchos tiempos muertos en que uno puede dedicarse al matarratos habitual.

Killing time in Clermont-Ferrand
Even if you are surrounded by friends as last year on which there was a lot of iberian people (this is what we made the last day and this was the result), at Clermont-Ferrand's Rendez-Vous du Carnet de Voyage there's always down times on which you can play the usual time killer.

Mi 40º cuaderno (mochilero #7)

Este cuaderno venía en la bolsa de bienvenida que nos dieron en el Simposium de Urban Sketchers que tuvo lugar en Lisboa en julio de 2011. Vivió en mi mochila entre el 8 de mayo de 2012 y el 1 de enero de 2013 mientras lo llenaba de dibujos del natural en Barcelona, Santo Domingo, Clermont-Ferrand, Vic y Jávea.
Al contrario que mi anterior cuaderno de mochila, en éste todo fue un apacible deslizamiento de principio a fin. Me llevé siempre bien con el formato y el papel, y aunque fui cambiando técnicas, siempre respondió bien a todas ellas. Ha sido la primera vez que usaba un cuaderno de Stillman & Birn y puedo asegurar que no será la última.

My 40th sketchbook (backpack #7)
This sketchbook came inside the welcome bag at the Urban Sketchers Symposium that took place in Lisbon on july 2011 and lived inside my backpack from july 8, 2012 and january 1, 2013 whille I filled it with drawings made from life in Barcelona, Santo Domingo, Clermont-Ferrand, Vic and Jávea.

As opposed to my previous backpack sketchbook, this was a mild slide from beginning to end. I felt always good with the format and the paper, and even if I changed techniques the response was always good. It was the first time I used a Stillman & Birn sketchbook and I can make sure it will not be the last.

And so this was Christmas...

Jávea, Nochevieja en casa de mis padres. Estamos digiriendo, hercúleo trabajo en estas ocasiones. La cena acabó hace un rato pero aún falta para las uvas. Polvorones y cava para matar la espera (y eternizar la digestión). Yo me pongo a dibujar el belén y lo que está al lado. Empiezo poco convencido pero en algún momento me doy cuenta de las hojas de flor de Pascua sintéticas, María y José del tamaño de Barbie y Ken, el ángel colgado del cuadro, y de repente todo se me antoja imprescindible y la pluma empieza a ir sola. Lástima que la fluidez no alcance a mis tripas.

Jávea, New Year's Eve at my parents house. We are digesting, herculean labor on this occasions. Dinner finished a while ago but we are still a bit far from the 12 grapes. Polvorones and cava to kill the time (and perpetuate digestion). I start drawing the Nativity scene and what's around. I start not so convinced but at some moment I realize the synthetic poinsettia leaves, Mary and Joseph the size of Barbie and Ken, the angel hanging from the picture frame, and suddenly everything seems indispensable to draw and the pen starts working alone. Alas, this fluidity doesn't got transmitted to my gut.

The boost is so strong that the day after I've still got fuel to keep on drawing spots of this tremendous showcase, but there are no more synthetic poinsettia leaves driving me to put some color.

Un poquito de simposium

15 de diciembre pasado. Reunión del grupo que está organizando el Simposium de Urban Sketchers que tendrá lugar el próximo mes de julio en Barcelona. El lugar es la terraza de la cafetería del CCCB, que es donde tendrá lugar el evento (el CCCB, no la terraza). De izquierda a derecha Isaac, David, la Brompton de Víctor, Víctor, Lapin, Tomás y Sagar (había más gente pero no me cabía en el dibujo). Se hablaba de las localizaciones de los talleres. Como puede verse, tenía poco que decir sobre el tema...

A bit of Symposium
Last december 15. Meeting of the group that's organizing the Urban Sketchers Symposium that will take place next july in Barcelona. The place is the terrace of the CCCB coffee shop, where the event will take place (the CCCB, not the terrace). From left to right Isaac, David, Víctor's Brompton, Víctor, Lapin, Tomás y Sagar (there was more people but I had no place for them on the sketchbook). We talked about the locations for the workshops.
As yo can see, I had not so much to say on the issue.

De dibujos y ligues

Dibujo mientras me tomo un té. A la mesa de al lado llega un hombre que cumplió los cuarenta hace un tiempo. Una mujer le esperaba tomando agua mineral, tiene más o menos la misma edad. Ninguno de los dos va sobrado de guapura pero se nota que se cuidan. Los cuerpos, las ropas, las actitudes dejan ver que pasan mucho tiempo en el gimnasio. Él se sienta y pide otro agua mineral. Está claro que se conocen poco, se hacen muchas preguntas, no saben casi nada el uno del otro.
Me siento un poco indiscreto escuchándoles pero es que hablan muy alto.
La conversación no abandona en ningún momento los complejos vitamínicos, las tandas de abdominales, las proteínas y los carbohidratos pero se vuelve poco a poco más cálida. Surge alguna risa. En ningún momento ha habido hielo que cortar pero está claro que la temperatura sube. Eso sí, no se abandonan nunca los índices de grasa y los ejercicios anaeróbicos. De repente y como con prisa se levantan y se van. Él pone la mano en la cintura de ella para cruzar, como protegiéndola. Sólo unos segundos, luego la quita.
Pienso que tienen más de cuarenta y pocas ganas de andarse con tonterías.
Si lo que acabo de presenciar lo hubiera visto en un cine me habría parecido escrito por un guionista genial. Primera cita: desde el saludo hasta el en-tu-casa-o-en-la-mía en 20 minutos hablando sólo de carbohidratos.
Acabo mi dibujo y tengo la sensación de que ellos me han ayudado a hacerlo.
Y a sentirme así de bien.

Of sketches and flirts
I draw while drinking some tea. A man that reached the forties some time ago arrives to the table right next to me. A woman more or less of the same age was waiting for him while drinking mineral water. None of them are beautiful but it's clear that they take so much care of themselves. Their bodies, clothes and attitudes reveal that both spend many time at the gym. He sits down and orders another mineral water. They do not know so much of each other and make many questions, it's obviously their first appointment.
I feel a little embarrassed for hearing this conversation but they speak very loud.
Their talk never leaves vitamin complexes, crunches series, proteins and carbohydrates but slowly gets warmer. Some laughter appear. It's never been frozen but the temperature is definitely rising. Of course without dropping fat indexes and anaerobic exercises. Suddenly, they stand up and leave the bar. He puts his hand on her waist to cross the street as if he wanted to protect her. Only a few seconds, then he removes it.
I think they're on their forties and far from feeling like beating around the bush.
If I'd had watched this scene in a movie I'd had thought the screenwriter was a genius. First date: from hello to my-house-or-your-house in 20 minutes just talking about carbs.
I finish my drawing and feel that they helped me so much to do it.
And to feel this good.

Un lugar secreto

El Passatge Lluis Pellicer es una callecita cercana a la Diagonal (y a mi casa) que mide 113,3 metros exactos. No me puse a medirlo pero como une las calles Muntaner y Casanova que están una al lado de la otra y por lo tanto separadas por la anchura de una manzana del Plan Cerdá (todas cuadradas e iguales), no me hizo falta sacar el metro para saber cómo es de largo.
Es un lugar tranquilo, casi siempre está tan desierto como se ve en el dibujo.
Cuando le puse el título a esta entrada me vinieron a a la cabeza estos 2 monstruos.

A secret place
The Passatge Lluis Pellicer is a small street near the Diagonal (and my house) exactly 113.3 meters long. I did not measure it but as it joins Muntaner and Casanova streets, one next to the other and therefore separated by the width of one block of the Cerdá Plan (all squared and equal sized), I did not need to take out the rule to know how long is it.
It's a quiet place, almost always empty as shown in the drawing.

Guastavino y los rompecabezas

A veces dibujar perspectivas complicadas del natural y sin la ayuda de un lápiz puede ser un divertido rompecabezas. A lo mejor por eso me gusta tanto meterme en estos berenjenales. Un ejemplo de rompecabezas de este estilo es la entrada a la Escola Industrial, muy cercana a mi casa y que cruzo a menudo cuando paseo acá y allá.
Cuando me puse a dibujarla me quedé bastante fascinado por la complejidad de todo el conjunto y especialmente por la curiosa perfección de las baldosas cubriendo superficies curvas entrelazadas.
Buscando en internet me encontré con Rafael Guastavino, arquitecto valenciano autor de Can Batllò, la fábrica sobre la que después se ubicaría la escuela, y muy aficionado a este tipo de techumbres. Poco después de este proyecto Don Rafael se fue a los Estados Unidos y allí registró una patente de lo que no era más que una versión mejorada de la tradicional bóveda catalana. Y se hizo de oro. Sus techos están en el Carnegie Hall, la estación Grand Central Terminal, el American Museum of Natural History, el Ellis Island Great Hall o la Catedral de St John the Divine. Todo esto sólo en Nueva York. Hay docenas de obras suyas esparcidas por todos los Estados Unidos.
Uno empieza un inocente pasatiempo dibujero y nunca sabe dónde puede acabar.

Guastavino and brain teasers

Drawing complicated perspectives from life without the help of a pencil can be a funny brain teaser. Maybe it's because of this that I love this kind of jams. A good example is the entrance to the Escola Industrial. It's close to my home and I often cross it when I take a walk here and there.

When I started drawing it I got quite fascinated by the complexity of the whole and especially by the curious perfection of the tiles covering interlocking curved surfaces. Searching the Internet I found the architect Rafael Guastavino, the author of Can Batlló, a textile manufacture where the the school was located, and very fond of this type of roofing. Shortly after this project Don Rafael went to the United States and registered a patent of what was just an improved version of the traditional catalan vault. And hit the jackpot. His roofs are at the Carnegie Hall, Grand Central Terminal, the American Museum of Natural History, Ellis Island Great Hall, the Cathedral of St John the Divine and many other buildings... all this just in New York. Dozens of his works can be found throughout the United States.

Amazing where an innocent drawing puzzle can take you.

La Escocesa

La Escocesa es una antigua industria química convertida en espacio de creación artística autogestionado, en Barcelona hay unos cuantos. Era un día de puertas abiertas el pasado septiembre, la fauna habitual de los saraos artísticos, cierta competición a ver quién acapara más miradas, poco de sublime, bastante de ridículo, un enorme vacío en medio. Estaban todos delante de mi estorbando la escena, como se ve en el dibujo no me interesaban mucho. Aún hacía calor y yo iba con pantalón corto, los mosquitos se lo pasaron bomba conmigo. No quiero ni pensar lo que harían con algún aventurero que llevaba un kilt (por el nombre del sitio, supongo... vete tú a saber).

La Escocesa (The Scottisch) is a former chemical factory now turned into a self-managed space for artistic creation, there are several of this in Barcelona. It was an open day last September, the usual fauna you meet in this kind of art events, some competition to see who takes more looks, some of sublime, quite of ridiculous, a big empty between. They were all in front of me bothering the stage, as seen in the drawing I was not so interested in them. It was hot yet and I was wearing shorts, mosquitoes had a lot of fun with me. I can't even imagine what did they do with some smart guys wearing kilts (by the name of the place, I guess... I shouldn't bet).

Ecosistema amenazado

Els Encants, el más grande y famoso mercadillo de Barcelona, será trasladado en los próximos meses a un lugar más grande, seguro, limpio, bien diseñado y mejor equipado.
Y así vamos (pisando mierdas).
Con la cantidad de cosas que habría que alejar (o mejor quemar) en estos días...

Endangered ecosystem
Els Encants, the bigger and most famous flea market in Barcelona will be moved on the next months to a larger, cleaner, safer, well designed and better furnished location. Shit happens.
So many things to move away (or better burn) these days instead of this one...

De vuelta al verdadero Hangar 51

Hace ya un par de años que vinimos por primera vez a Muebles Ram. No está en las guías turísticas (menos mal) pero es uno de los lugares más fascinantes de Barcelona y es el sitio donde realmente guardaron el Arca que trajo el Dr. Jones (el final de la película era sólo para despistar). El problema es que ahora no hay quien la encuentre. Pero está aquí. Lo sé. Aquí está todo.
Esta vez llegué tarde y sólo tuve como una hora para dibujar. Cuando el lugar cerró y fuimos invitados gentilmente a abandonarlo, había terminado por los pelos, sólo me quedaban los cristalitos de la bola de discoteca y la trama de la cesta. Hice una foto y coloreé en casa. No suelo colorear con tanto cuidado pero esta vez me pareció que valía la pena.

Back to the real Hangar 51
It's been a couple years since we came to Muebles Ram for the first time. It doesn't appear in the tourist guides (thank goodness!) but is one of the most fascinating places in Barcelona and is the place where the Ark Dr. Jones brought was actually put away (the final scene of the movie was just to mislead). The problem is that no one can find it now. But it is here. I know. Here's everything.
This time I was late and only had about an hour to draw. When the place closed and we were graciously invited to leave, I had almost ended the line work, and only left the little glasses of the disco ball and the basket rushes to do. I took a picture and colored it at home. I don't use to add color so carefully but this time I thought it was worth.

Barullo bicicletero

Siempre he odiado dibujar bicis. Con sus ruedas redondísimas y estrechísimas y sus miles de millones de radios y sus diferentes planos todos muy aplastaditos: pedal de este lado, cuadro, pedal del otro lado, la cadena delante, la cadena detrás... un infierno. Sin embargo antes de dibujar esto llevaba algún tiempo acariciando la idea, me apetecía. Sobre todo porque en algún momento dejé de ver en las bicis –dejaron de preocuparme– ruedas, gomas, planos, círculos, redondeces, radialismos y dificultades infernales. Es más, como si me hubiera vuelto loco me apetecía dibujar mogollón de bicis y no una sola, digamos... un aparcamiento!
Elegí uno que se ve desde mi ventana, para qué ir más lejos. Por alguna razón el amasijo de tubos, cables, cadenas y otras metalurgias y plastiquerías se me antojaba mucho más interesante que las bicis. Como ya he dicho, no veía bicis (si así hubiera sido la cosa me habría acojonado y habría salido una mierda). No me preocupé mucho de ellas mientras dibujaba. Empecé por el candado que hay en el centro y fui abriéndome en espiral. Las bicis fueron surgiendo.
Luego me fui a casa y les puse colores vivos para que se distinguieran unas de otras.
Y ya está.

Bike mess
I always hated drawing bikes. Its wheels so round and so narrow and its billions of spokes and all that squashed layers: this side pedal, frame, other side pedal, chain before, chain beyond... a drawing hell... Nevertheless before making this sketch I had been toying with the idea for some weeks, I felt like drawing bikes. Mainly because at some point I stopped seeing –I stopped worrying about– wheels, spokes, layers, circles, curves and all that hellish trouble. Moreover, as if I had gone mad, I wanted to draw not one but loads of bikes, let's say... a parking!

I chose one that I can see from my window, why go further. For some reason the tangle of tubes, cables, chains and all that metals and plastics seemed to me much more interesting than the bikes. As I said, I did not see bikes (if I had seen them I'd got freaked out and the sketch should have been a piece of crap). I didn't worry much about them while drawing. I started by the padlock in the center and continued opening circles as a spiral. Bikes arose themselves.
Then I went home and put some bright colors to distinguish the different bikes.
That's all.
