Este cuaderno vivió en mi mochila desde el 2 de enero de 2013 hasta el 15 de abril de 2014. Todos los dibujos fueron realizados en vivo en Barcelona, Sant Feliù de Guixols, Sitges, Sevilla, Coria, Terrassa, Carmona, Girona, Tanger, Clermont-Ferrand, Cádiz and San Fernando.

This sketchbook went with me in my backpack from january 2, 2013 to april 15, 2014. All the drawings were made on location in Barcelona, Sant Feliù de Guixols, Sitges, Sevilla, Coria, Terrassa, Carmona, Girona, Tanger, Clermont-Ferrand, Cádiz and San Fernando.

El encuentro fue en la Rambla del Poblenou. Por la mañana di un taller sobre dibujo urbano por lo que no pude asistir desde el principio. Me uní con el grupo junto a algunos asistentes al curso para comer, y después hice este dibujo de la Plaza de Can Felipa, una antigua manufactura de seda transformada hoy en instalaciones deportivas y culturales del Ayuntamiento de Barcelona. Fue mi único dibujo del día.

The meeting took place at la Ramblea del Poblenou. I gave a workshop about urban drawing in the morning so I couldn't go from the beginning. I joined the SkC group with some of the attendees for lunch. In the afternoon I did this drawing of Plaza de Can Felipa, which was an old silk factory, now transformed into a sports and culture center of the Barcelona Council. It was my only drawing of the day.

Hace algunas semanas, unos cuantos dibujantes de Barcelona fuimos a Girona para encontrarnos con el grupo de de allí y dibujar la reconstrucción del asedio por parte de las tropas napoleónicas que tuvo lugar en 1809. Un buen día y la agradable sensación de que los dibujantes callejeros no somos la gente más friki del mundo.

Girona, Napoleon and some other freaks
Some weeks ago some sketchers from Barcelona went to Girona to meet with with local sketchers and to draw the reconstruction of the siege by the napoleonic troops in 1809. A nice day and a good feeling that we sketchers are not the freakiest people in the world.

El de la izquierda es un miquelet (los miquelets son la milicia no regular tradicional de Cataluña), y el de la derecha un teniente del mismo cuerpo. Hasta aquí todo bien. El alucinante es el de azul en el centro que me cuenta que va de oficial de la Compañía de Ultonia, o sea... Irlanda!!! Resulta por aquella época hubo un fuerte alistamiento de irlandeses en el ejército español (católico, por supuesto) provocado por la represión de los Orange. De lo que se entera uno dibujando por ahí!

The one on the left side is a miquelet (miquelets are the tradicional catalan irregular militia) and the one on right side is a lieutenant of the same group. Everything's all right so far. The amazement starts when the guy in blue at the center tells me he's dressed as an officer of the Ultonia Company, so a company from... Ireland!!! Seems that on that times, there was a big enrolment of irish men on the spanish –catholic, of course– army caused by the repression of the Orange House. The things you learn drawing here and there!

Gustavo Gili es una editorial especializada en libros de arquitectura, arte y diseño. En su catálogo están todos los libros del colega dibujero Frank Ching editados para España y Latinoamérica, al lado de nombres como Bruno Munari, Ernst Neufert, Saul Bass, Otl Aicher, Aldo Rossi, Milton Glaser, Rem Koolhas o Keith Haring. El pasado día 14 de diciembre la editorial convocó un taller de dibujo callejero a cargo de Swasky y el que suscribe. El lugar fue obviamente el edificio donde está ubicada la editorial, un edificio bastante particular diseñado por Joaquim Gili y Francesc Bassó y que fue premio FAD de Arquitectura en 1961. La inscripción incluía catering y cerveza, así que fue un día de de dibujeo redondo. Yo me lo tomé con tranquilidad e hice sólo esto de aquí.

Gustavo Gili is a publishing house specialized in books on architecture, art and design. In his catalog are you can find all the books of fellow sketcher Frank Ching edited for Spain and Latin America, alongside names like Bruno Munari, Ernst Neufert, Saul Bass, Otl Aicher, Aldo Rossi, Milton Glaser, Rem Koolhaas or Keith Haring. On December 14 they organised an urban sketching workshop given by Swasky and your sincerely. The place was obviously Gustavo Gili's headquarters, a very particular building designed by Joaquim Gili and Francesc Bassó which was FAD Architecture Prize in 1961. Inscription included catering and beer, so it was a really a great sketching day. I took it slowly and did just one drawing.

Aparte de lo que publiqué en esta entrada, durante el viaje a Tánger del pasado noviembre dibujé unas cuantas cosas más, aquí van.
Apart from the stuff already published on this post, during my trip to tanger on last november I made some more drawings. Here they are.

Ya no me gusta dibujar en los aviones, siempre los mismos motivos y los mismos ángulos, pero en este caso la postura de una chica alemana jugando al Candy Crush me llamó la atención mientras volaba de Barcelona a Sevilla. Después del vuelo le enseñé el dibujo y ella me lo firmó. Gracias Verena!

I don't love to draw on flight anymore, always the same stuff and angles, but in this case the position of this german girl playing Candy Crush caught my attention on a flight from Barcelona to Seville. After the flight I showed her the drawing and she put her name on it. Thank you Verena!

Sevilla, la noche antes de coger el ferry a Tánger. Nos damos una vuelta por La Carbonería a escuchar un poco de flamenco y mira por donde un poco de jazz com Manolo Marcos tocando el saxo, muy bien por cierto.

Seville, the evening before taking the ferry to Tangier. We go to La Carbonería to listen some flamenco and some jazz with Manolo Marcos playing sax (quite good I must say).

Tánger, pub irlandés. No muy típico que digamos. Atmósfera de los '80, cerveza, alcohol, muchos hombres, algunas mujeres, ninguno lleva ropas locales. El Barça juega en la tele. Un tipo toca música marroquí en un sintetizador Roland. En la mesa de la lado un hombre mayor bebe con una pareja joven. Los dos hombres llevan ropas deportivas pero ella parece mucho más formal con su vestido de fiesta amarillo y corto. La pareja se sienta prudentemente cerca. Me pregunto si el viejo es el padre de ella...

Tangier, Irish Pub. Not so typical. 80's atmosphere, beer, spirits, many men, some women, no local garments, Barça playing soccer on TV. A man plays moroccan music on a Roland synth. On the next table an old man drinks with a young couple. The two men wear sport clothes while the girl seems much more formal with her short yellow party dress. The young couple seats prudently close, I wonder if the old man is the girl's father...

Los msaman parecen crêpes pero a mi me recordaron algo como churros pero más ligeros. Sean lo que sean, son buenísimos. Y la señora que los preparaba, inolvidable.

Msaman seem like crêpes but they remind me some kind of light churros. Anyway they are fantastic, and the lady that prepared them, unforgettable.

Como siempre, el viernes, primero de los 3 días del Rendez-Vous du Carnet de Voyage de Clermont-Ferrand está dedicado a los colegios. Los niños vienen en tropel desde primera hora de la mañana, la cosa asusta un poco pero la mayor parte son amables y respetuosos. Con mayor, menor o ninguna timidez pero con bastante educación te piden que les dibujes algo en sus cuadernos. Yo digo, qué tal un retrato? A todos se les iluminan los ojos y dicen... sí!!
Siempre me siento en un compromiso dibujando niños, quisiera atrapar la delicadeza de sus rasgos y la inocencia de sus miradas cosa que no me resulta fácil acostumbrado como estoy extraer más bien lo contrario en los retratos suelo hacer. Mucho más si el interesado me está mirando mientras lo hago. Afortunadamente mi mano debe de tener el día tonto y voy encadenando una serie que encanta a los chavales y a mi me deja razonablemente satisfecho.
Al principio olvido sacar la cámara para fotografiar los dibujos, visto que lo más probable es que no los vuelva a ver, así que sólo puedo traer aquí nos pocos.

As always, friday, the first of the 3 days of the Clermont-Ferrand Rendez-Vous du Carnet de Voyage is dedicated to the schools. Children come in droves from early in the morning, it's a bit scary but most of them are kind and respectful. With more, less or no shyness, but always politely they ask you to draw something on their notebooks. I say, what about a portrait? All of them enlighten their eyes and say... yes!!
I always feel embarrassed when drawing children, I would like to catch the delicacy of her features and the innocence of their looks, issues not easy for me as I'm used to extract just the opposite on the portraits I often do. Much more if the person is looking at me while I draw. Luckily my hand must be on its right day and I link a series that pelease the kids and gets me reasonably satisfied.
At the beginning I forget to take out the camera to photograph the drawings, since I'll probably never see them again, so I can only bring here just a few of them.

Algunos, entre tímidos y entusiastas, me muestran su agradecimiento: después de recibir su retrato han hecho el mío en la página de al lado y vuelven para mostrármelo. Es emocionante.

Some of them, shy but enthusiast, let me see their gratitude: after receiving their portrait made by me, they've drawn mine on the opposite page and come back to show it to me. It's touching.

Sin papeles en Tanger

Encuentro del Proyecto Creamos de la Fundación Tres Culturas en Tánger. Olvido el pasaporte, hace un montón de tiempo que no viajo fuera de Europa y no tengo costumbre de cogerlo. Al final me hacen una especie de salvoconducto de 3 días pero las bromas y la sensación de ir sin papeles durarán hasta la vuelta. Nos dan un cuaderno japonés especialmente confeccionado para el encuentro. Yo como siempre lo relleno de dos en dos páginas.
Hay un montón de gente del sur de España, unos cuantos de Portugal y unos pocos que venimos desde Madrid, Zaragoza y Barcelona. Los de Tánger son en su mayoría estudiantes. Hay muchas chicas. Pocas llevan velos o vestimenta que caracterice sus creencias. Me pregunto cuántas lograrán seguir así a los treinta.
No he conocido más que un poco de Tánger pero tampoco era una situación para dar rienda suelta a la curiosidad, citas programadas, mucha gente, muchos estímulos...
El viaje es corto, intenso, muy, muy divertido.

Illegal alien in Tangier
Meeting of the Fundación Tres Culturas's Proyecto Creamos in Tangier. I forget the passport, it's been a long since I do not travel out of Europe and I don't use to take it. Finally they make me some kind of 3 day safe-conduct but jokes and the feeling of being an illegal alien last till tha coming back. They give us a japanese sketchbook made specially for this meeting. I fill pages two by two as I use to. There's a lot of people from southern Spain, some from Portugal and few coming from Madrid, Zaragoza and Barcelona. The people coming from Tanger are mostly students. Many girls. Only a few with veils or colthes that could tell something about their beliefs. I wonder how many of them will remain this way when they will be thirty years old.
I have known only a bit of Tangier but it was not the occasion to give free rein to curiosity, scheduled meetings, many people, many attractions...
The trip is short, intense and so, so funny.

Esta maravilla de cuaderno con su cubierta de cuero y la palabra "freekhand" grabada en relieve en la cubierta fue el regalo que Inma Serrano me hizo por mi cumpleaños el 7 de julio de 2011.
Vivió en mi mochila desde el 31 de marzo hasta el 7 de julio de 2013, de nuevo mi cumpleaños.
Los dibujos los hice en Sitges, Barcelona y Sevilla.

My 42nd Sketchbook (Backpack #9)

This gorgeous sketchbook with that beautiful leather jacket and the word "freekhand" embossed on the cover, was the gift Inma Serrano made me for my birthday on july 7, 2011. It lived in my backpack from march 31 to july 7, 2013, my birthday again.

The drawings were made in Sitges, Barcelona and Sevilla.

12 de octubre, concierto de Herederos del Taxi en el bar del Ateneu de 9 Barris.
Lo mejor que he visto en mucho tiempo. Iban desde los Chichos a Manzanita, y desde Pata Negra a Rumba 3 y los Amaya sin inmutarse. Es más, se paseaban con un maravilloso descaro por los Gipsy Kings, Ketama, Junco, los Chunguitos, Azúcar Moreno y Paco de Lucía (interpretado con mucho más que dignidad, tela!). Hubo alguna que otra habanera en catalán pasada por el Rumbizer 2.0 y acabaron con Módulos, que por desgracia todo tiene su fin.
Musho arte, musha guasa y la sensación de que fue muy corto.

Taxi Heirs (I'm afraid this will be hard to translate)

October 12, Herederos del Taxi (Taxi Heirs) in concert at the bar of the 9 Barris Atheneum .

The best I've seen in years. From Los Chichos to Manzanita, and from Pata Negra to Rumba 3 and Los Amaya without turning a hair. Much more, they took a walk with a fantastic cheek by The Gipsy Kings, Ketama, Junco, Los Chunguitos, Azúcar Moreno and Paco de Lucía (much more than acceptable, wow!). Some habanera in catalan filtered with Rhumbizer 2.0 and at the end Módulos, because unfortunately todo tiene su fin.

Musho arte, musha guasa and the feeling that it was too short.

Hard to understand? I warned you.

La última noche del Simposium en Barcelona. Después del cocktail-cena de despedida nos encontramos en una plaza un espectáculo al aire libre de bailes Bollywood. Los dibujos los hice mientras bailaba (digámoslo así) y un tanto achispado (digámoslo así).

The last evening. After the farewell cocktail dinner we met a fantastic Bollywood street show. These all were made while dancing (let's say) and a bit merry (let's say).

Durante el simposium estuve haciendo de intérprete para Inma (2 veces) y Sagar (1 vez).
Se aprende mucho escuchando y viendo a los maestros en acción, pero se dibuja poco, hay que guardar lo aprendido para más adelante. Aquí van algunos dibujos rápidos (esos que cuando los hago yo siempre me parecen precipitados) hechos durante el taller de Inma (durante el de Sagar no tuve ocasión ni de sacar el cuaderno).

During the Symposium I was the interpreter for Inma (twice) and Sagar (once). So much learning hearing and watching the masters at work, but not so much drawing, you must keep what you get for the future. Here are some quick sketches (those that if made by me I always feel rushed) drawn during Inma's workshop (during Sagar's one I didn't have the opportunity to take out the sketchbook).

El simposium y todo eso, o sea, yatusabemiamó.
Dibujos de unos días antes con Isabel, César y parte de la armada del lejano oriente (Tia, Kiah, Paul y Pramote entre otros). Fuimos a sitios un poco obvios y como me los tengo un poco dibujados decidí probar a cerrar el zoom, prescindir de la silueta y buscar algo lo más abstracto posible, cosa para la que Gaudí se presta mucho. Y hete aquí...

The symposium and all that stuff, you know.
Drawings made some days before with Isabel, César and the far east armada (Tia, Kiah, Paul and Pramote amongst others). We went to some obvious places and as I've already drawn them several times I decided to check closing the zoom lens, do without the silhouette and look for something as much abstract as possible, a not so weird issue with Gaudí. And so...

Argumentum Scachisticum
Es evidente que Dios no ignora las reglas que rigen el ajedrez. Más aún: su inefable entendimiento comprende y prevé el manantial infinito de combinaciones que cada nueva jugada introduce. Este pequeño y divino detalle acarrea ciertas complicaciones: si a Dios le es dado atisbar cualquier camino victorioso desde el interior del laberinto, no precisa de urdir ataques, ni mucho menos defensas. Estrategia y táctica desterradas, le basta con elegir uno de los senderos y pasearlo hasta el mate. Sabedor del desenlace, está exento de toda lucha, y sin lucha, privado de la incertidumbre que da sentido a todo juego. Es posible que guiado por la fascinación de escaques y trebejos, concibiera un ser cuya sola cualidad fuera estar a su altura ante el tablero. Esto tampoco le aportaría mayor interés: un cruce de miradas tras el primer movimiento de las blancas acordaría las tablas. Inútil retar al Diablo: aparte de conducir a situaciones del mismo cariz, no estaría muy bien visto.
Dicho en pocas palabras, todo el placer que Dios llega a experimentar con el más grande de los juegos, no excede la mera especulación intelectual en solitario; verbigracia, cuantos movimientos le durará Kasparov al ser llamado a su presencia.
Corolario: Dios es incapaz de divertirse con el ajedrez, cualidad ésta no vedada a los mortales.
Tal aserción es inconcebible; ergo, Dios no existe.

A la derecha, 4 tomas de una mujer de rasgos precolombinos mientras intentaba (y no lograba) echar una cabezada en el autobús entre el aeropuerto y Barcelona.

On the left side, the usual flying sleepers. On the right side, 4 takes of the same woman of pre-Columbian features on the bus between the airport and Barcelona. She sure wanted, but she didn't manage to sleep.

Como es natural, hicimos un pequeño hueco para cerveceos, tapeos y terraceos varios. En realidad casi todos los dibujos ya publicados sobre este viaje fueron hechos uniendo obligación y devoción, o mejor dicho, devoción dibujera y devoción etílica. Y solidaridad con los compañeros de la hostelería que tienen que hacer caja, eso también. De arriba a abajo: terraza de nombre olvidado en la plaza de San Andrés (la del pelo rojo es quien te imaginas), Los Patitos en Coria, La Carbonería, y los dos últimos son del Levies, poco que ver con vaqueros.

Of course we gave some space for bars and beers. Actually almost all the drawings of this series were made this way. From top to bottom: an uncertain bar at Plaza de San Andrés (the redheaded woman is the one you guess), Los Patitos in Coria, La Carbonería and the last 2 were made at Levies, nothing to do with blue jeans.

Otro poco de Sevilla.
El primer dibujo es el Pabellón Mudéjar del Parque de María Luisa. El color del cielo no fue tomado del natural, no, que estaba plomizo y poco andaluz. El segundo es de la Plaza del Altozano, al principio de Triana. Hacía un bonito sol ese día pero me dio pereza poner color y así se quedó.

The first drawing is the Pabellón Mudéjar at Parque de María Luisa. The color of the sky is not from life, no, it was greyish and not so andalusian. The second is the El segundo es of Plaza del Altozano, at the beginning of Triana. There was a beautiful sun that day but I was too lazy for coloring and that's how I ended it.

En mayo pasado estuvimos unos días en Sevilla. Fue un viaje memorable: Inma, Aurora, Celia, Manu... y Sevilla, claro, Sevilla... Los dibujos son (de arriba a abajo) las Setas de la Encarnación, un experimento fracasado (mi dibujo, no las Setas), un poquito de Triana, y La Giralda of course, con mi toque personal estilo Guillermo Tell absolutamente no deseado pero qué le vamos a hacer...

Last may we went to Seville. An unforgetable trip. Inma, Aurora, Celia, Manu... and Seville, of course, Seville... The drawings are (from top to bottom) the mushrooms of La Encarnación, a missed experiment (my drawing, not the mushrooms), a bit of Triana, and La Giralda (how couln't I?) with my personal touch at the top William Tell style, absolutely not wanted but nothing to do...

Día Internacional del Libro, en conmemoración de las muertes de Cervantes y Shakespeare el 23 de abril de 1616 (aunque no sólo no murieron el mismo día como se ha creído durante siglos, sino que mira tú por dónde, ninguno de los dos murió tal día, que el uno murió el 22 y el otro el 2 de mayo) y fiesta grande en Barcelona con epicentro en Las Ramblas. Libros, rosas, y mucha, mucha, mucha gente.

World Book Day, in commemoration of the deaths of Cervantes and Shakespeare, both happened the 23th april, 1616 (even if not only they didn't die on the same day as commonly accepted for centuries, but none of them did it on that day: one died the 22th and the other on the 2nd may) and also a big fiesta in Barcelona with epicentre in Las Ramblas. Books, roses and many, many, many people.
