Music Always Survives

Last night, I had a hoop-dee-doo Mardi Gras Party at my digs and in the course of the proceedings, ended up playing a coupla sets with my old Freelance Vandals buddies. As I was standing up there in my living room banging on my guitar, I realized that I'd been playing music with some of these guys for FORTY YEARS! That hit me pretty good. Wow! I realized that music always survives the passage of time....from the endless hours we've rehearsed, the shows we've done, the times when we weren't together to play music, to the here & now. It's all good. In the midst of our playing, I could tell Billy was definitely in the room.

FV Tape Library: Remembering A 1998 Freelance Vandals studio reunion

In 1998, Ray & I started recording an album named BIG CIRCLE. This was back in the days when my computer music recording skills were pretty rudimentary but we did manage to get a few good tunes down. One of the special aspects of these sessions was that we had our Freelance Vandals drummer extrordinaire, Billy Cairns, joined in on several of the tracks. Today's FV Library post features on of those tracks we did with Bill. It's a ditty called Gravy Train and it features a throwback to the Freelance Vandals sound of yore. Ray handled the bass parts along with his el distorto guitar. Dig Ray's beefy solo...it brings back some of those RTI memories, eh? Billy, besides giving me a hard time over the overal sound of the recording, was banging away furiously on his set of electronic drums that we used on the sessions so that we could patch his drum sounds right into the computer. As it turns out, we never did officially release the album and its been sitting around gathering dust for years. That's about all these old brain cells can remember about this album except for the fact that my daughter (a little 8 year old at the time) did the cover art (see the image above)...this picture has always been one of my favorites. It has a universality about it. Huzzah!

Ah me....1978...it wuz the best of times, it was the worst of times...this particular year ended in disappointment for the Freelance Vandals as the album we recorded for RCA had done got shelved because our producer had pulled some funny stuff with the label (this was back in the day when producers signed artists to production contracts similar to the mess that Bruce Springsteen got himself into with Mike Appel)...at the time, we realized our record contract was left for dead by the side of the rock & roll highway. The question that was burning a hole in our brains was "what do we do now?" All we really had left was the music and sometimes that's just enough to get ya through the hard times, eh? Heh, heh, heh! Little did we know that 1979 would be our most productive year ever! Huzzah!

Ah, Billy Cairns, Billy Cairns...I can't believe another year has come & gone and it's yer birthday once again. Where does the time go? As per my usual custom, I'll celebrate Billy's memory with some photos & music from ye olde FV Tape Library....

About the tracks on today's playlist:

Track 1 is the infamous DOG RECORDS COMMERCIAL which Billy produced and recorded at the band's Vandal House in Freeport, NY in 1979. Billy had been racking his brain, trying to think of a cool way to promote the band's double single release (known as "The Dogpak") and decided we should throw a party and record all of our friends in the style of those old commercials where they would interview theater-goers leaving a Broadway show. A few cases of beer later and we ended up with this!

Track 2 comes from the band's (gasp!) audition at Phinneas T's, a bar in Oceanside which played a large role in the band's early ears. You can hear us trying to pull together our sound but, as usual, Billy was right in the pocket from the get-go.

Track 3 is from a 1979 gig @ The Music Box, one of our favorite bars to play at back in the day. We always liked covering material by The Stones because, besides being a natural fit, we always managed to bring a little something of our own to the tunes.

Track 4 is one of my favorite memories from the Freelance Vandals years...."Before They Make Me Run" (The Music Box 1978), the only track I have of Billy singing lead on a song at a live show. He had a great voice but was shy about using it (the only time I can recall he was shy about anything!) I would always say, "Billy, you have a great voice..." He'd inevitably answer, "You're right about that!"

Track 5 is a rousing rendition of "Boy On Fire" which comes from our live on the radio WBAB concert at the Silver Dollar Saloon in Bay Shore (Nov. 1979)...I always thought that this song would have been a shadow of itself without the driving force of Billy's drums...great job there, Bill!

Track 6 "Shock Rock" comes from a gig at the old Pastime Pub in Amityville in 1980...this song always mystified me by the way that each year we played it, it got faster and faster and faster and...well, you know. I would say that the early 1980's era of the band would be best described as "The Heart Attack Years".

Track 7 "The California Medley" was our show closer throughout the "Heart Attack Years"; an unabashed flying-by-the-seat-of-yer pants medley of "California Man" (great song by The Move & later Cheap Trick), "California Sun" (the ol' Riverias chestnut) and "Summertime Blues". I think we just happened upon this random grouping of songs at rehearsal one day and it sounded good to us. Billy's drums (while a bit faded on this old tape) were truly like the thunder of the Rock gods at this show. He beat the daylights out of his kit on this song. At the end, when the last hum of the amps had died away, Billy would be sitting there with that big goofy grin on his face which pretty much said, "I think we played good." I will never forget those moments when the world seemed to just simply stand still, almost as if we were literally inside of the music.

Track 8 is a rendition of one of the most popular Vandal songs of all, "Shirley". This version comes from album sessions we did for a record on RCA back in 1978. Billy's jazzy groove is right there.

Track 9 is one of my favorite Billy performances; a driving "Beat Generation" from the band's YER MONEY OR YER EARS album which we released back in 1984. Bill's tom tom work is the glue that keeps this track together. Again, Billy seemed to demonstrate a jazz approach to a Vandal song....here, he reminds me a lot of Gene Krupa's work.

In closing, a big HAPPY BIRTHDAY to Billy for his drumming chops, sense of humor and all around joie de vivre. It wouldn't have been the same with out him.

FV Tape Library: Miss You - Music Box 1979

In the waning days of the 1970's, the Freelance Vandals were a meat & potatoes rock band in every sense of the word. We were a working bar band as well which meant we were indeed required to play a certain amount of cover songs by other artists at our bar gigs. At this point in time we mostly liked to cover British R&B like the Stones & the Faces. When the Stones put out their Some Girls opus, I think we covered everything on that album except for Faraway Eyes (thank Gawd fer that!).

On today's track, Miss You, you can hear the band dipping its toe into the icy waters of Rock- meets-Disco, which, with songs like Rod Stewart's If You Think I'm Sexy and Miss You attempted to set the tone for this developing style. My way of dealing with this latest abhorent musical development was to slip the Jordache Jeans commercial theme song, the Village People's Macho Man & (this being a Christmas show, heaven help us) White Christmas into Miss You. A very tasty melange, don'cha think?

As a whole I can't really say that I was fond of the rock/disco thing because it was making genuine rock & rollers look too desperate to look (ahem) COOL. During these halcyon days, one would pick up the paper and see Mick Jagger dancing his ass off at Studio 54 (thanks to Keef for remaining a rock & roller). The Freelance vandals had their own run-in with this rock/disco thing back in the day. This quasi dance-a-holic rock style was so prevalent then that when we went into a real recording studio to lay down our original song, Lightning Rod, the producer (one Dennis Ganim or as I like to call him, "Dennis Gambit") insisted we record it in this new rock/disco style. I once had a copy of that tape but one night I had too many beers with Billy and we went out into our backyard and burned the cassette, dancing around the tiny fire with glee.

Anyhow, this track comes from one of our demented gigs at the ol' Music Box in Bellmore. Home of one of our fave bartenders, Steve Beck! That's JD Sumner (percussionist with a popular local band at the time, Full Circle) on the the cowbell & conga drum. Gary, JD, Jack & Billy create a solid metronomic wall as Ray lays down some real tasty guitar work on this track...down & dirty in the mud...like it oughta be.

FV Tape Library: Harlem Nocturne

Howdy Folks!

Today's FV Library track is a dark instrumental named Harlem Nocturne; a cover song originally made famous by The Viscounts back in the day. This was one of the more interesting cover songs which entered our repetoire when we took on two new members (Al Speed & Tommy Yamasaki) in the summer of 1982. I recollect that Tommy, who was an acomplished jazz sax player, suggested we do this number. I had heard the song previously at a Mink Deville show earlier in the year and was definitely on board with the whole thingamajig...oddly enough, I'm not playing on the track! Mainly because from time to time during our shows, we'd do an instrumental so that I could rest my singing voice but in this case (at least to me) it seemed that the band sounded totally in the pocket & there simply was no reason to add my rhythm guitar...which gives credence to the musical proverb that sometimes the notes you don't play matter more than the ones you do play! Anyhow, this version comes from the band's only live album, Yer Money Or Yer Ears (Gunga Din Records, 1984).

Billy & Mike's tight layer of rhythm give the entire proceedings a tasty late night club feel, Al & Ray fill it out nicely with their chording & harmonic touches and Tommy just adds the icing to the cake with his great horn playing. I remember a few people were a little taken aback by the Freelance Vandals playing a jazz tune. "What the?!" This era of the band worked quite a bit with material outside of our regular gambit; we actually attempted playing some jazzy pieces like this just to see if we could get away with it....and we did.

FV Tape Library: Miami Man (RTI 1981)

Howdy Folks! I was sifting thru the big ol' cardboard box of Freelance Vandals cassettes when I came across yet another forgotten sonic delight...a little ditty of mine named "Miami Man"! It's a tongue-in-cheek look at the fellow pictured above...God knows why but at some point back in the day I thought it would be a great idea to write a song about the Panamanian dictator General Noriega!

I like this recording for the sheer unbridled energy that abounds throughout the track. From Billy's Ramone-like count-off to Chuck's see saw sax solo (played in tandem with Ray's see saw guitar licks), you can feel the song literally running away from the band! There's a nice little Latino feel to the entire proceedings...ah, I'll blame it all on my rice & beans diet at the time (it was all I could afford!)

FV Tape Library: Last Call For Alcohol (Silver Dollar Saloon 1979)

Here's a track from our show @ The Silver Dollar Saloon on Thanksgiving Eve 1979 which was broadcast live on WBAB back in the day. As I recall, the fabulous Wes Houston Band opened the show. The crowd was pretty tanked up (it being Thanksgiving Eve & all...)

Other memories: somebody stole Ray's hat after the show & before the show my right sneaker split in two so I hadda wrap it in duct tape (which was the start of my fashion sensibility, eh?)

FV Tape Library: WBAB Live Concert Medley

Today's post features a medley the band performed at a Silver Dollar Saloon show (Bayshore, NY) which was broadcast on WBAB back in 1979. The songs featured in the medley are So Tough So Loose / Mystery Boy / Holiday . Pay special attention to the way Billy drives the band through each song with his powerful drumming. I'll tell ya by the end of this medley, I remember feeling like I'd been smacked across the forehead with a 2X4...all in all a pretty rockin trio of original songs! My memories of this particular show are crystal clear. It was the night before Thanksgiving and we had finished a series of sessions in NYC for an album which we had recorded for the RCA label (later to be shelved....awww!) Also on the bill was the fabulous Wes Houston Band. The crowd, as you can hear, was pretty darn liquid (which is usually the case the night before Turkey Day)....

FV Tape Library: Cracking Up (1977)

Howdy Folks!

It's time once again to rummage thru the ol' box of cassettes to see what's available for today's FV Tape Library post...hmmmmm...what's this....why it's a tape that's obviously seen some wear & tear....it's sticky too (must have spilled some Gran Marnier on it back in the day...heh, heh...)...ah, I can make out a title on the tape: The Music Box 1977...this was probably recorded on a Friday night at that club...Steve Beck was behind the bar (I remember most gigs by who was bartending)...The song, Cracking Up, is one of my fave Bo Diddley songs that I used to listen to in high school....at some point, I must have convinced Billy (who was the final say on what cover songs we played) to give this one a whack. Nice distortion on my rhythm guitar too (ah, I miss those old Music Man amps, eh?....click on the download button if you want to save the track to yer computer....Hoo Hah!

FV Tape Library: Mr. Quasimodo (1981 outtake)

Howdy Folks!

It's been quit awhile since I girded my loins, ran a dust cloth over the ol' memory circuits and waded thru that big ol' box of Freelance Vandals cassettes that I have in my basement studio. Today, while lounging around in a Holidaze, I came across a tape labeled "The Barry Harris Sessions". These sessions, which took place in 1981 at an audio studio located at Harvey Pro Sound (a Pro Audio store in Manhattan whose owner, Gene Perry, was kind enough to give us free studio time), were produced by an engineer/friend Barry Harris. We cut only a small batch of originals; "Cocaine & Promises", "Jazz Baby", "Mr. Quasimodo", "Roll That Rock" and "I'm Alive". This was the first time we'd entered a professional studio since we'd recorded our DogPak songs back in 1979.

Today, most of the comings & goings to these sessions are pretty much a blur to me except for "Cocaine & Promises" session where Billy (our stout hearted drummer to whom this blog is dedicated to) insisted on spending an entire hour recording a 3 second cowbell/tom tom fill. Tempers were high as the ol' back & forth kicked into gear...Ray: "Gawdamn it Billy! Just hit the drum!" JP: "Yeah, hit the drum!" Jack: "Yeah, like he said!" Mike: "Anybody got any papers?" Billy: "Fuck all you guys!"....and so on....but hey, that's the magic of comaraderie in a rock & roll band...some of the best moments in my life were spent yelling back & forth to these guys. Ahhhhh......

Long Island Sound

Howdy folks! More times than not, the state of radio is enough to drive me over a cliff but fortunately there's sites like LIVE365 where a knucklehead like me can actually set up & program their own radio station! I call my station LONG ISLAND SOUND, a place that celebrates the great musical heritage of this here place I call home.

In addition to the well known recording stars such as Billy Joel, Zebra, Joan Jett, The Good Rats etc., you'll also hear tracks by as much local talent as I can find on ITunes and other officially released outlets....be sure to listen for Small Town Sheiks, Freddy Monday, Kerry Kearney, Biscuit Kings, Freelance Vandals, Johnny Pierre (hey, that's me!) and more!

Howdy! As is my tradition each year on this Freelance Vandals page, I dig deep into the big box of tapes to come up with some obscure Freelance Vandals Stocking Stuffers!

Stocking Stuffer #1:

DRIFTERS

This is a Ray Finch/Chuck Ciany instrumental track which dates back to 1975, recorded by a band we had in Maryland known as Mama's Boys. It comes from a double album titled "Rumble At Sligo" which remains unreleased to this day (hey, that sounds like a familiar scenario....)

Stocking Stuffer #2:

THE ENTERTAINER-WHITE CHRISTMAS Medley

Here's a track from late 1974. This is the original trio lineup of the Freelance Vandals (myself, Billy Cairns and Paul Polanski on sax) performing a tasty medley of "The Entertainer" (aka "that song from The Sting") and "White Christmas". To these old ears, it sounds like something Capt. Beefheart (bless his soul) might've done.

Stocking Stuffer #3:

Motown Medley: BEAUTY'S ONLY SKIN DEEP-AIN'T TOO PROUD TO BEG
This one's from 1977 and it was recorded during our audition at Phineas T's in Oceanside...very crude recording but good energy...plus, this song was the only time I ever played a glockenspiel on stage....

LIVE WITH ME

This track is from 1979 and features our bassist extrodinaire Gary Pritchett singing the Rolling Stones tune, "Live With Me"...this is an interesting take on this old rock warhorse number...

NIGHTHAWKS

A Chuck Ciany original from 1980, his first year with the Vandals. This was always a challenge to play...sorta Meat & Potatoes meets Pop Sensability...

Stocking Stuffer #6:

LITTLE TROUBLEMAKER

A raucous live cut from 1981 --- this is an Ian McLagan song (he was the keyboard player in that great pub rock band, the Faces)

Stocking Stuffer #7:

LAUGHING BUDDHA

A Live track from 1982 --- this is a rockin tune written by a local favorite artist M.C. Osso (who is sadly no longer with us)...my favorite line: "there is a laughing buddha inside your pants"...yes, indeed....

Stocking Stuffer #8:

SHOOTING STAR

This is a slice of our ancient history...from 1975...an original written by Ray Finch, Chuck Ciany & myself (I think that's the only song all three of us collaborated on)...it's a pop ballad, very unlike the rock & roll we would go on to make in the the mid 70's and 80's...maybe Justin Bieber might need a piece of fluff like this, eh?

Stocking Stuffer #9:

SHOCK ROCK (the Dennis Ganim Sessions)

Back in 1978, we got involved with a record producer named Dennis Ganim ("Green Eyed Lady" - Sugarloaf etc) and we actually recorded an entire album worth of material for RCA records which was -- wait for it --- never realeased. Here's one of the tracks from those ill fated sessions.

Stocking Stuffer #10:

MR. QUASIMODO (Barry Harris Sessions)

In 1981, we did a series of sessions with a recording engineer named Barry Harris. Somehow, these tracks were -- you guessed it --- never released! Among the songs recorded were Jazz Baby, Cocaine & Promises, Nighthawks, I'm Alive and Mr. Quasimodo. Special Thanks to Barry Harris who was a very patient man.

Stocking Stuffer #11:

BOX LUNCH (JP's original demo)

Here's my original demo for one of our most popular songs, "Box Lunch". I remember writing this when I was at my parents house in Florida during Christmas in 1979 (thanks to whoever put up the money for my plane ticket home that year)...I remember my Mom calling from the other room, "Oh is that a new song? What's it about dear?"

JULIETTE

Last but not least...here's a sweet version of "Juliette" from a recent Wonk Bros gig at RS Jones. Out of all the songs I've written with my buddy "Diamond" Ray, this is one of my favorites. I really enjoy taking some of the old songs and putting a new skin on them...it brings out a certain element of surprise (especially to me, someone who's been playing the song for 30 years or so!)
