I’ll admit it.

I only wanted my husband to get his laptop fixed so that I would never have to leave the cozy safety of my bed ever again.

I loved propping up several pillows behind my back, setting up the small breakfast-in-bed tray, and writing, tweeting, and surfing Etsy to my heart’s content. It was relaxing, and appealed to my inherent laziness.

So it drove me crazy that he was taking his sweet old time replacing his laptop’s defunct power cable.

Then he presented me with an early birthday gift, and suddenly the possibility afforded by mobility seemed limitless!

He picked me up this Acer AS5516-5474 and, after amusing myself for some time with its bubbles screensaver, I began to think of all the places I could go with my laptop:

the local park: I’m often reluctant to head back indoors after my morning walks, and usually think wistfully of how nice it would be to have a laptop to take to the local park. Now I do!

Panera Bread: Well…Panera Bread or any other establishment offering free (or cheap) WiFi. I love my cats, but it would be nice to surround myself with human beings every once in awhile.

Meetups/Tweetups: My husband and I attend a web designer/blogger meetup every month at Panera Bread, where participants bring their laptops and show off their gadgetry and web work and trade troubleshooting tips.

trips into the city: I live in the NJ suburbs, but sometimes have to travel into NYC for appointments or social engagements. When I end up with time to kill, I usually feel lost without a home base, despite the book I always carry in my bag. I’d feel much better if I was getting work done.

vacations and other long-distance trips: As a blogger with a daily quota, time away often translates to pre-trip stress, due to all of the stockpiling that has to be done. Being able to take my work with me eases that stress.

Where do you like to take your work?

Pass it on!

Her Anti 9-to-5 Guide led the way in my journey to full-time freelancedom. And when My So-Called Freelance Life hit the shelves, I couldn’t stop myself from gushing. It was the book I wished I’d had from the very beginning.

After the jump, Michelle Goodman — one of my top freelance gurus — is kind enough to answer my nagging questions:

1. Could you tell our readers what first led you to freelancing in the first place?

It was a hasty decision. I hated working in an office five days a week. As far as I was concerned, 9 a.m. was the middle of the night. At the time, I was working as a publicist at a New York book publishing company. A newspaper I had interned for after college offered me some freelance work writing advertorials about clothing trends (basically ad copy disguised as journalism). It of course costs a fortune to live in New York, and some of the freelance pieces I was doing paid more than I made in a week at my publicity job, so who was I to say no?

I researched and wrote these articles evenings and lunch hours, loving every minute of it. So much so that, when I moved to San Francisco at age 24, I decided to do everything in my power to avoid getting a staff job again. After a couple years of working odd part-time jobs to offset my initially paltry freelance pay, I was off and running as a full-time independent professional.

2. What percentage of your clients are regular, and how do you seek out new clients?

I’d say 80 to 90 percent of my work comes from regular clients now. For the past year, I’ve had weekly or monthly deadlines for the same three to five clients. One of these projects just ended and another seems to be running out of money, which means I finally have room in my schedule to pitch new editors and try to forge new relationships with what I hope will be ongoing clients. The idea of writing for some new markets has me really excited.

3. As a freelancer whose resume is a bit all over the place, I have a tough time declaring myself an expert in anything. When was the turning point in your career when you felt you had the expertise to write a book?

I’d been speaking and writing about freelancing and other forms of alt employment — temping, contracting, part-time work, and so on — for a few years before I began writing my first book (The Anti 9-to-5 Guide). When my editor said, “Pitch me the topic you’re most passionate about,” freelancing and alt careers was the obvious choice. So it was a combination of being comfortable as a subject matter expert, being in love with the topic, and putting my own unique spin on it (career advice for indie-minded women).

4. And how did your regular columns come about?

I wrote a post about that a while ago. The short answer: I was already freelancing for the Seattle Times when they asked me to write How’d You Land That Great Job?, and then Nine to Thrive. With my ABC News career column, my editor went to the bookstore, found The Anti 9-to-5 Guide, and gave me a call. The book definitely opened that door for me.

All the columnists I know have been tapped for the gig, either by an editor who already knew and loved them or by an editor looking for an expert (author, speaker, or nationally known journalist) to step into the role. Editors tend to be unimpressed by writers who approach them for the first time and ask for a column. Better to prove that you can rock a particular topic (personal finance, home repairs, life after divorce, whatever) and develop a following by consistently feeding an editor great story ideas and copy.

5. You’ve done articles, copywriting, books, the speaking circuit…where do you see your career taking you in the future?

I’ve finally had time this spring and summer to catch my breath, step back, and make a game plan. I’ve always been a freelance writer first and foremost. The copywriting is something I initially did to get in the freelance game and, later, to fill in the financial gaps when my journalism work didn’t pay enough. The speaking gigs have been to promote my books.

My immediate plan is to continue getting paid to write articles and essays about careers, personal finance, and whatever pop culture trend strikes my fancy. I’m also meeting with a speaking agent this month to see if speaking on the college circuit is something I can add to my schedule without too much difficulty. And while I haven’t ruled out writing another career guide, my longer-range plan is to move into creative non-fiction books, which actually has been my master plan all along.

6. What’s the most interesting, quirky, or fun project you’ve worked on recently, and how did you stumble upon it?

A high-tech firm I used to write marketing copy for recently gave me a Smartphone to fiddle with so I could write how-to articles about the phone and its apps. So basically I get paid to play with the phone and write articles like “How to Use Your Mobile Phone to Telecommute.” Fun, and the phone plan is free!

7. I think I settled into writerly work because I’m so shy, and I’ve always been able to communicate better when dealing with the written word. Was being a part of the speaking circuit ever outside of your comfort zone? If so, how did you get past that initial fear?

It’s still outside my comfort zone, but doing at least a couple of book readings in your home town to celebrate the launch of a new book is all part of the author shtick. These are actually a joy to do. Friends, family, and clients come. Local bookstores are incredibly supportive (and psyched for the extra foot traffic), and sometimes the local media even throws you a bone.

Although I still have to psych myself up before each talk and I sometimes get terribly nervous, it’s definitely gotten easier with time. I’ve also found that unless you’re speaking to a bunch of suits (not really my crowd, so not an issue for me), it’s okay to work your personality quirks into your talk. People appreciate hearing from someone who’s real, approachable, and potentially as goofy as they are.

8. You were a writer-in-residence at Hedgebrook. Feel free to share details so that we can all live vicariously through you…but for those of us who don’t necessarily have the ability to go away on a writer’s retreat, what are your tips for creating a working sanctuary at home?

This story I wrote about Hedgebrook says it all. It’s heaven to leave all your deadlines, RSS feeds, bills, stresses, roommates, etc. behind and do nothing but sleep, eat, drink wine, write, edit, talk shop with other writers, and stroll through the woods for a week or three. Time passes much more slowly without Twitter, and you get a ton of work done.

Though I’ve never been able to recapture the bliss of Hedgebrook at my house, retreating to my home office, kicking everyone out of the room, and shutting down everything but the Word doc I’m working on and my writing soundtrack of choice definitely helps. That’s not to say I always succeed at staving off the countless distractions of working at home, but I do what I can.

9. If you could purchase anything for your home office, what would it be?

I always thought it would be cool to store my clips and magazines in one of those flat file cabinets that architects use. I probably won’t splurge on one any time this century, though. I am, however, planning to move my office from the second bedroom in my house to my garage so I’ll have more space. I may even put a couch in there.

10. Aside from your own books, what are your favorite resources for the burgeoning professional in his/her 20s or 30s?

On My Own Two Feet is a great book on getting real with your finances in your twenties and thirties. I wish I’d had it when I was 30. And How’d You Score That Gig? is a great resource for those wondering what it’s like to work in some of the most coveted jobs out there (from film production to nonprofit management to clothing design). My favorite career columnists/experts for young professionals are Marci Alboher, Alexandra Levit, Lindsey Pollak, and Eve Tahmincioglu.

11. What are the toughest aspects of freelancing, and how do you deal with them?

In the past couple years, I’ve been really, really burned out at times, to the point where I’ve had zero interest in my work for weeks on end. (This often comes as a surprise to people who look at what I do and think, “Dream job!”) When I’m that fried, the only way out is to slog through any immediate deadlines on my plate as quickly as possible and take at least half a day off to sleep, read, zone out in front of the tube, romp around outside with my mutt, or do anything else that’s not related to work.

…

Thanks Michelle!

I’ve always been a firm believer in the idea that a bad economy shouldn’t doom a freelance career, as long as you’re doing the hustle.

Apparently, I’m not hustling enough.

My income first took a hit when the New York Sun folded almost a year ago, and was hit again when Nerve.com revamped their site about a month ago. Despite several copy editing projects and magazine assignments (both in print and online), my income has failed to recover.

Which is why I’m researching additional sources of supplementary income. After the jump, I share 10 side job ideas for freelancers:

1. Copy Editing and Other Torturous Activities:

I’ve been neglecting my copy editing background lately to focus on the work I enjoy the most: writing. I think it’s about time I sucked it up and acknowledged the fact that there’s a high demand for those who specialize in the tedious stuff. Consider supplementing your more creative income by copy editing, proofreading, fact checking, or transcribing (ugh).

2. Consulting:

When my husband suggested I do consulting work for one of his clients (who happened to be a complete novice to blogging), I laughed at him. After all, like most everyone else online, I’m self-taught and, for the same reason I have trouble setting my rates, I also have trouble envisioning myself as an expert in anything. While it may seem that everyone is an expert these days, though, there are even more people who are clueless when it comes to new media. Feel free to help them out…for a price.

3. Becoming a Virtual Assistant:

It may seem menial, but why not consider admin work? Many at-home workers are becoming certified as virtual assistants so that they can make an easy buck without even leaving the house. I’ve previously listed several virtual assistant associations here.

4. Coaching:

Those who have been reading this blog for awhile know that I’ve been (slow) saving up the money for a career coaching certification. Getting certified would allow me to open a private practice that I could operate from home, with business hours set to my own, flexible specifications. While a lot of the coaching industry is unregulated, earning your certification could legitimize you in the eyes of potential clients, expanding your earning potential. Check out the International Coach Federation for more info.

5. Babysitting:

Babysitting. It’s not just for the junior high/high school set anymore. The business of care giving has become more businesslike than ever before, and sites like Sittercity provide sitters and nannies with a means of marketing themselves to desperate parents. You can beef up your profile by listing your qualifications, availability, location, and more.

6. Teaching:

I’ve mentioned teaching on this blog before. Similar to consulting, teaching can be a means to share your knowledge with those desperate for information. If you’re not interested in becoming part of a larger institution, why not tutor or give music lessons at home? If you’re intimidated by the thought of teaching (as I am), consider becoming a teacher’s aide, or a substitute teacher.

7. Cashing In on the Wedding Industry:

Once upon a time, I briefly considered becoming a wedding celebrant. It seemed like the ideal gig: I could learn about a multitude of cultural marriage traditions, be privy to innumerable personal stories of romance, and charge big bucks just to write and perform ceremonies. I even thought I could up my cache because of my experience as a wedding singer. I never followed this path, but it still seems like a seductively good idea. And being an officiant isn’t the only way to cash in on the always-booming wedding industry. Harried brides and grooms also require wedding planners, photographers, DJs, and more.

8. Getting Paid to Sweat:

Can you juggle five hula hoops at once? Belly dance with the best of them? Salsa the hell out of a spicy beat? Work your friends’ cores with pilates, yoga, or callanetics? Make your workout more than a hobby. If you think you’re good enough, consider teaching a class at your local gym or college campus.

9. Decorating (and Other Assignment Spin-Offs):

The other day, a freelancer I’m following on Twitter tweeted about getting her first interior decorating gig. Pretty sweet, huh? Turns out she had become interested in the industry after writing about it. Have any of your writing assignments sparked additional entrepreneurial interest? My products blogging has also made me a bit obsessed with interior decorating, but just about any writing assignment could act as inspiration for a new side career.

10. Part-Timing It:

Back in February, a New York Times article about working retail made the rounds. The writer put forth the idea that having a low-pressure, part-time job that was so different from her freelance work kept her sane. Just about any part-time job could possibly do the trick for you.

…

I’ll admit it. I haven’t been blogging much lately. I blame summer. And visiting relatives. And lazy afternoons. And Broadway shows and new restaurants.

I also blame the fact that I’m not quite sure what direction I’m moving in anymore. I’m working on an article for Time Out NY, starting to become a regular face at Lemondrop, and helming a new blog over at Nerve. But it’s not enough. And I’m not quite sure how I want to supplement my income.

When one is not moving in new directions, it’s tough to find new freelance questions to answer. Help me out: Let me know what you’re dying to know.

While I use my Twitter account primarily to promote my work, share relevant links, and network with other freelancers, the mundane, the personal, and the desperate often sneak in.

But perhaps that’s a good thing.

In comparing follower numbers recently between my personal account (822) and the Tools of Attraction account I’m managing (129), I was forced to consider what I was doing wrong in the latter account:

@stephauteri: RTs relevant tips and links from other tweeps, thereby providing a service to followers. Simply posting links to my own work would make me look like a spammer. Or at least make me seem conceited. I know I’m not the only or best resource on freelancing, and I want my readers/followers to get a glimpse of what else is out there.

At the moment, I rarely RT other stories in my Tools of Attraction account, instead using it primarily as an RSS feed of the blog itself.

@stephauteri: asks questions of her followers (to varying results), and tries to answer the questions of others. Doing so opens a dialogue between me and my followers, making things more interactive.

There is little interaction going on between toolsofattrctn and its followers, which is something I hope to change in the coming months.

@stephauteri: reveals herself to be an actual human being, going coo-coo when the coffee runs out and gushing about thunder storms and non-credit classes. People have no interest in interacting with a robot. They want to connect with someone who they feel they can empathize with, and who can empathize with them.

On this count, toolsofattrctn has — for the most part — been a Twitter FAIL.

I spend the bulk of my hours on my computer, and the bulk of those hours on my Google Reader, scanning through the 146 blogs I’m subscribed to. Among those: Lifehacker. The blog’s posts are rich with tips and web apps guaranteed to make my life easier.

Though I can easily search through my Google Reader for the answer to any problem — assuming it’s already been answered in a previous post — there’s just something about holding a tangible reference manual in your hands…

Which is why I was curious to read Lifehacker founding editor Gina Trapani’s Upgrade Your Life: The Lifehacker Guide to Working Smarter, Faster, Better.

In the end, there just wasn’t enough to hold my interest. I felt as if I was reading an extended Billy Mays pitch…the sort in which problems are created in order to sell the solution. I’m a creature of habit, and it seemed that merely learning how to be “smarter, faster, better” would cost me more time and effort than it was worth.

Still, there were a few tips I found interesting:

Hack 2: Decrease Your Response Time:

In Hack 2, Trapani gave a multitude of tips for decreasing your e-mail response time, such as processing messages in batches, and the one-minute rule. I already do some of these, and it’s the reason my inbox is usually empty. Definitely worth a look if you’ve been buried under a mountain of incoming e-mails for months now.

Hack 12: Instantly Retrieve Files Stored on Your Computer:

In this hack, Trapani explores a number of downloadable search apps that are guaranteed to make searching all the files on your computer much easier.

Hack 14: Instantly Recall Any Number of Different Passwords:

I don’t want to give away the big secret here but Gina: You are one clever chica.

Hack 17: Organize Your Digital Photos:

I’m a sucker for organizational tools, and I’m a sucker for personal photos. Which is why I immediately downloaded Picasa — a free photo organizer by Google — upon reading this. After having it search all the images saved on my computer, I sheepishly erased all the porn, and then spent a good amount of time captioning and tagging photos, and placing them into albums. I believe that, over time, I will harness the true potential of Picasa.

Hack 22: Make Your To-Do List Doable:

The tips here are just common sense, but it helps to be reminded. Break down items in your list into actionable tasks. Use active verbs. Include all necessary information. Etc. Following the tips in this hack will keep you from feeling overwhelmed on a daily basis.

Hack 24: Map Your Time:

I like this hack because I like spreadsheets, and this hack involves using color-coded spreadsheets to schedule out your day. It even mentions a downloadable Excel time map template if you’re not up to making your own.

Hack 51: Batch-Resize Photos:

This one is self-explanatory, and helpful when you’ve just uploaded a bunch of high-res images from your digital DSLR.

Hack 58: Poll Groups of People with Doodle:

I’ve been on the hunt for the best polling site, and I’m liking the looks of this one. Perhaps I should set up a poll in order to get your opinion?

Hack 69: Manage Your Documents in a Web-Based Office Suite:

A nice alternative to carrying around a flash drive, I’m not quite sure why I haven’t gotten on the Google Docs bandwagon yet. In this hack, Trapani includes the pros and cons of using a web-based office suite, and then gives multiple options for word processors, spreadsheets, and presentations.

Hack 97: Rescue Your PC from Malware:

I haven’t tried this myself yet, only because I don’t trust myself to not accidentally acquire even more malware in the process. There’s already a shady file on my computer that I’ve been unable to get rid of. But perhaps it would be worth it. Trapani mentions tools like Lavasoft Ad-Aware, Spybot Search and Destroy, SpywareBlaster, and Windows Defender. Anyone have any experience with these?

…

You get the picture. If you’re interested in checking out more of Trapani’s tips and hints, pick up the book. Otherwise, I highly recommend searching through the Lifehacker archives for specific problems.

Despite all my preparations, when I finally went full-time freelance, I was clueless when it came to finding new projects. As I had always done before, I scoured the job ads, dutifully sent out cover letters and resumes, found a part-time freelance gig that gave me the feeling of stability and, otherwise, waited for the work to come to me.

And for at least a year, it worked. I eventually ended up with two regular, moneymaking gigs, and additional projects continued to come my way via friends and former colleagues. Within only six months, I had matched my previous corporate salary.

Then the publication I was copy editing for folded and, about six months later, the web magazine I was writing for decided to switch things up, leaving me with a lot less income. And it occurred to me: I had been coasting!

I know I’m not the only one. Other office workers looking to go freelance are often surprised to find out that job-finding tactics are wildly different when you’re in business for yourself.

After the jump, some passive and aggressive ways to find work, and why it’s essential that you cultivate a mixture of both:

Passive:

Job Ads: Job ads should be a last resort even when searching for your typical corporate job. After all, most employers prefer to hire from within and, when they are unable to find someone within the company, they turn to people who know people who know them next. While sites like Craiglist, Ed2010, FreelanceSwitch, and ProBlogger often list freelance job ads, the pickings are slim. the competition is heavy, and the pay is usually insultingly low.

Still, it doesn’t hurt to set up job alerts or RSS feeds from these sites.

Bidding Sites: I’ve ranted about these before. Basically, I feel as if bidding sites such as Elance and Odesk are forcing freelancers to undermine themselves and others by underbidding in order to get the gig. Not only that, but many clients who search for service providers on such sites don’t have the budgets to pay fair wages. It’s a big draw for the lazy freelancer, however, because it provides a central location at which to find work. For the love of god, if you’re going to use job ads (see above), frequent the ones that don’t force you to stab the backs of your fellow freelancers.

Blog Aggregators: I reserve a similar amount of ire for blog aggregators, which pay a pittance for unedited, unfiltered work. Still, some beginning freelancers assert that it’s a decent means of building your portfolio while simultaneously building a brand.

Online Marketing: I write this blog. I tweet like a maniac. I have my tweets feed through to Facebook. In this way, I make valuable contacts, and find new readers every day. It’s important to do, but you can’t expect to have offers pouring in solely because you Twitter. While there are those who have found jobs on Twitter, LinkedIn, and the like, such efforts usually make up a very small part of a person’s entire income.

Aggressive:

Pitching: As a writer, I get my choicest assignments my brainstorming story ideas and pinpointing the best publications and editors to send them to. After all, while a simple Letter of Interest can drum up some interest, editors love it when you make things easy for them. And when you approach them with a fantastic idea, more often than not they’ll show their appreciation by giving you a contract.

Cold Calling: This is scary. I’m not gonna lie. But when it comes to other types of freelance work, such as copywriting, copy editing, web development, and the like, nothing beats the cold call (or at least the letter of interest…or is that the wuss in me talking?). Pinpoint your dream clients and pick up the phone. How else will they know you’re out there?

Networking: Time and again, the phrase “it’s all about who you know” is proven absolutely right. Which is why you need to network like hell. With the people you work with now. With the people you worked with then. With friends and family, and their friends and family, and their friends and family. With your hair stylist and your dentist and your bygod gynecologist. With the people you meet on the street, or on line at the bank. Make sure you’ve got your elevator pitch ready, and then make sure everybody’s heard it at least once.

While passivity can sometimes pay off, showing initiative, and being active and aggressive, will lead you to success.

What’s your most successful means of drumming up new work?

I carry a polka-dotted notebook in my purse at all times. There is a collection of moleskines on my desk. And I have the NiteNote tucked away in a drawer underneath my bed.

But that’s not all. In my hall closet, there is a large plastic container filled entirely with blank notebooks, some purchased in various B&Ns and stationery shops…most gifted to me by those who are aware of my enduring notebook love.

You’d think that would be enough to last me a lifetime, but I’m always on the lookout for something new, cute, and small enough to fit in my purse.

Which is why I’m digging these Bright Ideas pocket notebooks on Etsy. Because lord knows I could use a few more bright ideas.
