I think a true portrait is a very intentional act. I think if one takes the time to look at portraits by Renoir, Rembrandt, Manet, Vernonese, Sargent and, photographically, Nadar you see certain conventions of placement in frame, gaze, lighting and, especially, revelation of emotional moment.
