      <description>Geoff, Gene, et al,

Thanks. I got up this morning and finally was able to download the
interview from the archive date you provided and was able to play it in
Windows Media Player. For some reason I have a very slow connection to that
site and it took over an hour to download the file onto my desktop. But it
was worth the wait as it was quite interesting and informative, particularly
as a newbie to this community. Bravo! A job well done. And Jamie is a
singer as well? I'm impressed.

<description>I'm beginning to think you might be right. Seems to me that ms security
essentials works in jerks, a bit like the old avg real time monitor used to.
It can break up nvda and cause it to pause in funny places.

I don't know what machine you have but it seems worse on some than others.

I suppose you have checked your machine, if running xp is not stuck in pio
mode on disc access? I think I have the vbs proggy to fix it if it is.

I just downloaded and installed NVDA and I must say I'm quite impressed.
I've been both a Jaws and Window-eyes user and both do their jobs
respectively.
Someone had told me about this program and I thought I'd check it out, and
so far so good.

My real question is, is there a way to read the full screen?
For example, when I'm in I

I'm sorry I don't have the time.

But I will say that on my system it seems to run nice and fast.

I don't get it suddenly going loud and cracking I would say when I am
typing that letters spoken are very quick and it does seem as the end of
each letter is almost cut off a little bit.

But, as I observed earlier, if I am on the start button and press the space

<description>If I move to the start button and press the space bar, the same stuttering
occurs as when I use the Windows key and am not on the button prior to using
it. If your hypothesis is correct, moving to the start button first, then
pressing the space bar should result in no stuttering. I did not say
anything, in previous messages about moving to the start button and pressing
the windows key. I didn't test that. But since I had moved to the start
button and then pressed the space bar and stuttering occurred, it is
reasonable to infer as a good possibility, that the stuttering is somehow
caused by the action of the windows logo command and not by focus being
first moved to the start button. In addition, the fact that you are placed

<description>I don't care what the expected behaviour is, all I can say is that for some
of us, if you put the focus on the start button and hit the windows key, you
get no stutter, and if you have the focus somewhere else, you do.
The focus always ends up on the start button after an escape out of the
start menu.

This is xp pro sp3 with classic menus and all effects turned off.

<description>I deleted the message discussing the properties but later decided to reply.
So I'm not quoting previous material in this message. The link you
reproduced as the direct link is not found in the properties for the listen
link. It is found in the properties for the download link. The Listen link
runs a script that forces Media Player to play the file. Also, it
significantly limits how you listen. For a technical reason I don't know,
you can't fast forward nor can you use the rapid speech listening feature of
Media Player. You can use seek to move through the file but that's the only
movement you can do. The only way to have good control over how you listen

<description>Last word on this here as its getting off topic now, but lets just say if
you do a google search for this topic, you will find a file for win 7 that
does this. There is a snag though. You need to hand edit the registry with
details about your sound drivers. The author says it runs with his sound
system, and to be honest as the network ready system must be being built by
the installer, it would take little effort when the installer is running for
it to have used your own sound drivers for a third safe option, but it does
beg the question, when is safe mode no longer safe mode..

And yes, it is the key I posted.

<description>That's why then. Portable versions do not allow admin programs to speak

<description>What evidence do you have that the start button is shown first. As I said a
day or two ago, this is not expected Windows behavior and I see no reason to
believe it happens. As I said, the expected behavior in Windoww when you
use a shortcut to open a menu is that the menu opens and the button or menu
bar is not displayed. On my computer, the stutter if very minor and it is
so slight that I don't consider it a problem, except in a technical sense.
If ohter people have considerable stuttering, that might be a problem but on
my machine it's so slight that it's hardly there.
