      <description>Hey Viren,

Just look for a Shared APPL_TOP implementation doc in MOS.
The section Adding additional node describes how to accomplish your task.
Those steps are valid even if you do not have shared FS.
Just make a copy on each server.

SSL Accelerators implemeted via OAM portal. If looking for command prompt
implementation the description is in MOS as well.

Thanks guys for your inputs it will help me debeting :) on the use of ASM.

My concern is also you have to maintain another database for ASM and if that
goes down means u cant access the filesystem and hence the db, and if you
want to use ASM with RAC then you have to maintain ASM instance on the
participating nodes.

I mean that before 10g, if you needed something similar to what ASM offers in
terms of manageability, you would need to purchase Veritas CFS for Oracle, or
other similar product (HP, IBM, Sun), and these tools were, and still are, very
expensive.

If you didn't, you would be forced to use raw devices, with all the
management headaches it has.

<description>I kinda dislike the absence of fsck like tools for ASM, and the lack of
backup superblocks, not sure if this changed in 11g.
It is there now with new ASM Volume Manager and ASM Cluster File
system :) However you don't need it for DB files any way.
There are other methods checking Oracle DB files integrity.

Aside from that I feel it is a killer product. Similar functionality with
cluster filesystems cost hundreds of thousands of dollars, except in the case
you go for OCFS2, and that is available for linux only.
Not sure what do you mean by cost hundreds of thousands of dollars

I kinda dislike the absence of fsck like tools for ASM, and the lack of
backup superblocks, not sure if this changed in 11g.

RAW devices (block devices) - Best DB IO performance - Manageability is

Cluster FS - rubbish performance / technical complexity / costs - Good

      <description>Guys,

Sorry this is not ASM thread, but i want to discuss the use and experience
of ASM.

I am in design phase we will have 2 node RAC and ASM( best practise and
MAA). i am bit skiptical on use of ASM as it is adding additional
maintenance of ASM instances on each node. And again copying files into and
from will be another challenge. Guys could you please discuss your your
experience on ASM use.

      <description>Pravin,

Load balancing using eBusiness suite standard tools can provide high
availability for most of the components, but not all, it cannot provide high
availaiblity for the entry point.

For that you will need either a clusterware to manage virtual IPs, could be
from Oracle or Sun, or an external load balancer appliance. If you go for the
Sun clusterware, check the prerequisites and the available functionality
carefully to see if it will work with Oracle Apps.

<description>Agreed - with some serious scripting, use of VIPs, and general
clustering experience you can go quite a ways with a commodity NFS
setup; the more time and expertise you put into it, the higher the
brain cost.

To be sure, commercial NFS is going to add a lot of features
(OpenFiler may indeed replicate some of these - excellent point) but
unless there is a larger need for HA NFS in the enterprise, I might
want to point my $$ at the skilled OS person vs the commercial filer;

      <description>Chuck,

I don't agree that this setup can't deliver automated NFS failover.

It should be possible to set these boxes with a shared device, DRDB, OCSF2,
whatever, and use Oracle CRS to manage the NFS server and virtual IP.

The Linux NFS server already has some provisions to allow for a high
availability deployment. There are some parts missing, like proper nfs locks
replay, but it can be made to work as an application file system, where these

<description>From a performance requirement perspective, commercial NFS is
overkill for shared application file systems. Standard Linux/UNIX NFS
will do just fine and is quite cheap. For failover, you can simply
set up two servers and have them rsync changes from one to another.
If you experience a failure, simply mount the file system from the
failover on your application servers and off you go. It's not
instantaneous, to be sure, but it provides a couple of advantages:

1. Cost is very low. A pair of ~$900 white boxes with mirrored disk

      <description>Hmmm,

NFS thirdy party vendors are $$$, but operating system clusterware to manage
NFS high availability can also be $$$.

Sun cluster suite, HP cluster, or Veritas is not exactly cheap. I don't know
how the clusterware licensing goes for AIX. For Redhat, RHCS used to be
licensed separatelly but on the latest release they included it on the
operating system license.

      <description>What is your Operating System.
Try to stay away from NFS 3rd party vendors ($$$).
If your Operating system Vendor has a tool or utility use it.
I'm on AIX and the OS can hand and manage NFS (we call it automount). This way
no deamons get stale or old or require rebooting.

Also, you could have a high available NFS server, possible using vendor or
Oracle clusterware to manage it. (Will require additional licensing)

Well, for iAS, EBS, RAC, what I do is start everything on the host before
installing the OEM agent, so it can see what ports are being used and choose
other ones. And of course, install on a different ORACLE_HOME.

But I never worked with WLS so cant guarantee this will work... (I think I am
in trouble, since the new AS release is already WLS based :-)

<description>Run this from the command line:

logrotate -f path to config file

That will force a rotation of the logs specified in the config file,
even if the parameters wouldn't indicate rotation is needed. If you
already use logrotate.d, you can just specify the config file there:

<description>Have you tries using logrotated? It's included in most Linux distros,
