<description>Agreed - with some serious scripting, use of VIPs, and general
clustering experience you can go quite a ways with a commodity NFS
setup; the more time and expertise you put into it, the higher the
brain cost.

To be sure, commercial NFS is going to add a lot of features
(OpenFiler may indeed replicate some of these - excellent point) but
unless there is a larger need for HA NFS in the enterprise, I might
want to point my $$ at the skilled OS person vs the commercial filer;

      <description>Chuck,

I don't agree that this setup can't deliver automated NFS failover.

It should be possible to set these boxes with a shared device, DRDB, OCSF2,
whatever, and use Oracle CRS to manage the NFS server and virtual IP.

The Linux NFS server already has some provisions to allow for a high
availability deployment. There are some parts missing, like proper nfs locks
replay, but it can be made to work as an application file system, where these

<description>From a performance requirement perspective, commercial NFS is
overkill for shared application file systems. Standard Linux/UNIX NFS
will do just fine and is quite cheap. For failover, you can simply
set up two servers and have them rsync changes from one to another.
If you experience a failure, simply mount the file system from the
failover on your application servers and off you go. It's not
instantaneous, to be sure, but it provides a couple of advantages:

1. Cost is very low. A pair of ~$900 white boxes with mirrored disk

      <description>Hmmm,

NFS thirdy party vendors are $$$, but operating system clusterware to manage
NFS high availability can also be $$$.

Sun cluster suite, HP cluster, or Veritas is not exactly cheap. I don't know
how the clusterware licensing goes for AIX. For Redhat, RHCS used to be
licensed separatelly but on the latest release they included it on the
operating system license.

      <description>What is your Operating System.
Try to stay away from NFS 3rd party vendors ($$$).
If your Operating system Vendor has a tool or utility use it.
I'm on AIX and the OS can hand and manage NFS (we call it automount). This way
no deamons get stale or old or require rebooting.
Hope this helps.

<description>NetApp Filer would be a good choice

Also, you could have a high available NFS server, possible using vendor or
Oracle clusterware to manage it. (Will require additional licensing)

Well, for iAS, EBS, RAC, what I do is start everything on the host before
installing the OEM agent, so it can see what ports are being used and choose
other ones. And of course, install on a different ORACLE_HOME.

But I never worked with WLS so cant guarantee this will work... (I think I am
in trouble, since the new AS release is already WLS based :-)

logrotate -f path to config file

That will force a rotation of the logs specified in the config file,
even if the parameters wouldn't indicate rotation is needed. If you
already use logrotate.d, you can just specify the config file there:

we are planning to provide MAA for our EBS Production instance. In the DB
tier we are going to implement a Stand by database but for the Apps Tier I
have some questions.

We are going to clone the Apps tier firsts in a new server to be able to
work with the stand by database, the problem here is how can we update this
Apps tier each time we apply a patch in the Production instance.

Never worked with WLS, but I don't really see an issue.(BTW, that is Web
Logic Server, Right?)

If the plugin doesnt work or is not available, you could get away registering
user defined metrics on the host, which are essentially shell commands.
Probably also Web Applications and Services, but my knowledge on grid
control is rather limited... So I cant help you with those.

      <description>Hi,

You can check the value for a particular user on FND_USER_PREFERENCES.

Query the table for the user in question and see if he has something setup
for the mail preference, I dont remember which key it is.

This table also stores the system default value with a strange key that
starts with # if I am not mistaken.

You need to verify the user setup - who reported that he can't get any emails.

Login to OAM - Workflow Setup - Verify by sending a test email to the user who
reported the problem. You can check the log in $APPLCSF/log/FND*.txt (Check for
latest timestamp, or grep the files with NID) - to see if the emails are sent

I've been reading your posts.

      <description>Thanks Yuri, Luis :)

am going through your blog Yuri and will be a regular visitor too :)

I agree with notification mailermight be updating 'null' status instead of
'SENT' for some of the processed notifications.
And what i found is, there are different mail status like
'SENT','ERROR','FAILED','MAIL', 'SENT' and 'NULL' till date, then in which case
it updates to 'NULL'.

      <description>Hi Suboh,

I would go with Luis suggested direction.
You might run the following query to find out a user email and
notification properties:

SELECT u.user_name, r.notification_preference, r.email_address
  FROM fnd_user u, wf_local_roles r
 WHERE r.name = u.user_name
 and u.user_name = 'username';

      <description>Hi,

SUN OS wise you will not get any issues and Solaris is a very standard
,robust platform for oracle apps.
In your case, you are migrating 11.5.9 to same OS from lower to higher
version.
