<description>You don't have to purchase the 64-bit version of Windows 7 BUT if you want
to do an in place upgrade (keeping your settings and programs), you'd have
to get the 64-bit version (probably professional or ultimate). I think that
the upgrade price diff. is $20.00. The Ultimate version also has
Multilanguage support and bitlocker to go, so that you can secure the data
on USB devices so that if they are stolen or lost, bad people can't get your
information.

If you go either from a 64 bit version to a 32-bit version OR from a higher
version of Windows to a lower version, you have to do a clean installation,

      <description>Hi Christy,
both my versions came with both 32 bit and 64 bit DVD's and from
others post the packaging contains both.

BUT I see some vendors (NCIX) on line offering either a 32 bit or 64 bit
versions??

As a mater of fact all versions are on the DVD you just need the correct
key from Microsoft.
That is how they are able to do an Anytime Update when you contact them.

      <description>My two cents:

64-bit computing is the (near) future. 32-bit systems can only access a
little over 3 Gigs of memory, while 64-bit computers can access (in theory
something like 4 terabytes of RAM), but practically up to 192 GBs of RAM
using Ultimate. I just ordered a 64-bit copy of Win 7 from Newegg.com and
plan to set up two partitions (running either Vista 32-bit or Win7 64 bit).
With Pro and Ultimate (of Win7), you can run XP mode, which will allow a lot
of older programs to run that might not run under Vista or Win7 itself). To
run WinXP in Virtual Mode, you need all the memory you can get. Even if you

I can get microsoft windows 7 pro upgrade 32 bit for $39.98 or
microsoft windows 7 ultimate upgrade 32 bit for $99.98 where I work.

I am now using vista 64 bit on my fairly new laptop. Which is the better
deal and what is different between the two. Wondering if I need the
ultimate or even windows 7 at all?

      <description>You're very welcome, Sandi. :)

I do have to say that I typed a little too fast on that explanation.
BitDefender is an anti-malware scanner, not an AV app. That's why it
doesn't have a problem with already installed AV products. However, the
online engine DOES also identify viruses, trojans and worms like an AV. I
should have been more specific about this earlier.

Peace,
Gman

<description>Thanks for the link my good friend! I never could find it in available add
ons, perhaps because it was never there. I studied a bit about how to
download this little gem and could not figure it out so I ran the scan and
that was when it went into my Firefox Extensions. I have the little icon
back (not in the Notification Area as I reported in error) but at the bottom
of Firefox. The scan showed no problems. A really quick scan I might add.
And thank you too for the explanation as to why and how it works o.k. with
other anti-virus apps.

      <description>Hi Stefan,
That's not good. It's impossible to tell if your system is not allowing you
to enter Safe Mode due to an infection or because of a system malfunction or
corrupted system file.

Since the start of this thread was brought about because of a possible
rootkit infection, I recommend that you enlist the aid of one of the online
malware removal professionals. If this is being caused by malware, they
will be able to identify and help you remove it. The one I recommended
earlier is below.

<description>Part of the problem with running more than one AV on the same system at the
same time is that each AV will often find the other's definition files to be
greatly offensive. This specific BitDefender install doesn't use definition
files.

Another issue is with competing AV scanning engines. Simply put, they don't
normally play well together, causing systems to hang, crash or worse.

<description>G, I know traditional wisdom is to run only one anti-virus program. Can you
explain why Bit Defender is the exception? Does it not run in the
background? Does it scan and fix problems upon demand? I don't think I
used it but once and I did not think to shut down AVG while I ran it.

The link below takes you to what I use and have recommended here. It
installs as a browser extension called BitDefenderQuickscanner. It also
shows up in the Extensions list under that name.

<description>G, my first thought was that it was an extension but when I went to tools,
addons, and did a search I could not find it. I had just updated Firefox so
I figured it must be one of those that was not compatible with the updated
Firefox. Am I missing something here? I was also thinking this came by way
of a recommendation from you and I could not find that in my saved

      <description>Sandi,

Maybe it was just their free online scan you had installed. That is
available on their free stuff page below. It probably installs a browser
plugin and a tray icon for fast access. The online scanner should be safe
to have along with AVG, but I wouldn't recommend installing their non-online
anti-virus program because of the potential of conflicts.

<description>Ed, no Registration info. And I have AVG 9 Free. I think I got Bit
Defender from this list when there was a lot of concern about Conflicker.
And maybe it was just the scan. I did not use it regularly but it looked
kind of neat in my Notification Area!
Perhaps I should just bookmark the site.

<description>Every once in a while, my own computer experiences what I can only call a
'bad boot'. I have come to believe that it's caused by my refrigerator's
compressor kicking on at the exact same time an important operating system
file is being copied into RAM. The cure, of course, is to reboot again.

The best approach to your situation is to suggest that you also try again.
If it happens a second time, then I will be inclined to give more serious
thought to something else. Still, Safe Mode will not allow viruses and
malware to run, so I don't feel that's the problem here.

      <description>Sandi,

Do you have registration info? If so, then download the version that
matches what your registration info says its valid for. If not, then you
must have the free version. Is that the only anti-virus program you had
installed? Its not a good idea to have more than one anti-virus installed
at the same time as they can (and often do) create conflicts that can cause
a lot of problems. If that was the only anti-virus program installed then
it wasn't a good idea to uninstall it before downloading the new version.
I've read about people saying they got virus infections during the time

      <description>Hi Christy,
I look at them as see if they represent anything I use on my computer.
I always download the Critical Updates.

There is no point in my installing the 37 language packs that Windows
Updates
suggest for my laptop.

I do download the network card and video card patches.

removed Bit Defender with the intent of downloading it again so I went to
the website. Their are any number of downloads available. I believe it was
originally put there because of the threat of Conflicker (Downadup?). I have
searched through my techtalk files and cannot find any reference to that
download. Can someone tell me which one I need in order to have the icon in

      <description>Hi Stefan,
These two files are part of your DirectX Graphics Driver set. There should
be no reason for Malwarebytes to stop scanning when it reaches these files,
so maybe they have been somewhat corrupted. Then again, it could be a
malware providing you with a false positive.

The first thing I would do is manually update Malawarebytes and then reboot
into Safe Mode and run a Full scan from there. The DirectX files should not
be in use in Safe Mode. This is also a good method to use to help unconver
certain kinds of malware that hide themselves when running in normal mode.

      <description>Hi Jo Ann,
I wipe off the vast majority of it with small pieces of paper towel. Then,
I use q-tips dipped in isopropyl alcohol (70% works well). The tips should
be pressed against the side of the liquid container to swueeze out excess
fluid before applying it to the top of a CPU or bottom of the heatsink. I
usually coat these surfaces, let stand for 10 seconds or so and then use a
clean dry q-tip to remove the result. Repeat two or three times, let both
items dry for a few minutes (make sure all alcohol is gone) and then apply a
very thin coat of fresh thermal compound to both mating surfaces, put them
together and strap it down.

If the system has been around for a while, it may be time to open up the

If he's not familiar with the procedure (power off, touch nothing elecronic,
