If you are a window user, you are already used to using the operating systems Task Manager to manage the various tasks running on your computer

Now you can use this same familiar interface to manage the tasks in your life. Here is how the popular productivity blog Lifehacker describes the program:

Windows only: Free, open source application Personal Task Manager (PTM) tracks how you spend your time at the computer. The application is developed to look and feel a bit like the Windows Task Manager, but its goal is to help you manage a completely different breed of tasks.

Below is the familiar Windows Task Manager and the Personal Task Manger software for managing your tasks.

The folks who write the software say about their open source creation,

PTM is an Open Source time tracking tool hosted by Sourceforge.net. It looks like Windows Task Manager Have you ever suffer to answer to questions like: What have you done last week?
On what kind of things did you spent the time?

humm... I used to have no answer... till I download(ed) PTM.

You can download the software free at the link at the top of the post and see if you agree.

Process and Understand Large Volumes Of Information Fast Without Speed Reading with The Deluxe PhotoReading Self-Study Learning Course

PhotoReading offers a unique method for quickly and efficiently processing and understanding large amounts of information without speed reading.

PhotoReading exposes printed materials to the brain at phenomenal rates, a page per second. It is beyond the conscious mind's processing capability, but within the capabilities of the subconscious. PhotoReading actually teaches you to "mentally photograph" the printed page at 25,000 words per minute.

Photoreading has been recommended and endorsed by Tony Robbins, Jack Canfield, Harvey Macka and Ken Blanchard

Steve Palvina whose well known blog Personal development for Smart People says of PhotoReading:

"PhotoReading is by far the single best reading course I've experienced. As I went through the PhotoReading system, I realized it was much more than a speed-reading course. The rapid photographic reading is the most attention-getting part of the system, but PhotoReading is really an integrated system of flexible reading strategies. If you think of speed-reading as a hammer, PhotoReading is the whole toolbox. With PhotoReading you'll efficiently extract the key ideas from whatever you decide to read."

PhotoReading developer, Paul Scheele is an international expert in human performance. His acclaimed work has led to a breakthrough in reading that is easy for anyone to apply.

According to Scheele with the PhotoReader Deluxe Home Study Course, you will absolutely be able to process and understand any printed material three times faster than you can right now.

The PhotoReading course is not a recorded seminar. Rather, Paul Scheele redeveloped PhotoReading to present it in a way that is ideal for self-study. In just a few afternoons, you will be well on your way to mastering printed information with speeds and comprehensions that may astonish you. A PhotoReading Success Coach will be assigned to you at no charge.

PhotoReading requires a willingness to explore something different. One of the reasons people in emerging countries such as Hungary and Mexico have embraced PhotoReading is they realize they have to do something different to catch up with other countries.

You may be getting by, but to thrive in this new millennium with the deluge of information, you absolutely will have to do something different, otherwise you will be passed by. Think of where you would be today if you had not opened up to the personal computer.

The folks at White Ciiff Computing who I have featured in many previous posts are allowing me to offer a new software program they have developed, Motivator absolutely FREE to readers of the Mindware Forum.

Developed by Dr Michael Masterman along with Karl Moore, and Bradley Thompson, Motivator is based on a niffty little device developed in the late 1980’s called the MotivAider.

The MotivAider is a small pager-style device that you clip onto your belt. At a specified time it beeps – just like an alarm clock. MotivAider has been successful in helping people keep on track toward a chosen goal such as quitting smoking or weight-loss.

According to Dr. Masterson,

. . . tools such as the MotivAider are powerful and are a great method of achieving fantastic change in a short period of time.

But they’re LIMITED.

After all, there’s only so much you can associate with a “beep.” And you can’t customize tools such as the MotivAider to actually display text messages. The beep eventually becomes annoying – and then you forget what you’re supposed to remember when it makes that noise.

In other words – soon after starting, IT REQUIRES DOUBLE THE EFFORT.

That’s why OVER FIVE YEARS AGO, myself and two leading self-development gurus helped to develop a tool that went BEYOND that limitation.

It was a special piece of software that we called, simply: Motivator.

Dr. Matherson is allowing us to give Mindware Forum readers a FREE full-function no time limited free copy Motivator Software as an instant download. Please visit this link to get yours now!

Gnaural an open source cross platform software project providing a generator of audio binaural beats. Here is some excerpts from Gnaural's developer description of the aims of the project:

The publication of "Auditory Beats in the Brain" launched a
wave of new
research in to binaural beats. The particular avenue
that caught my interest was the
effect known as "frequency-following response" (FFR), in which the
overall EEG pattern of the brain can be influenced to lock-on to a
repetitive external stimulus ..

My interest in FFR was as a tool to target specific
mental
states. Specifically, I wanted to find a shortcut to achieving
meditative states by "slowing down" brain activity via FFR. . . .

In
over a decade of experience with the technique, I have mainly
found it very useful in areas such as stress reduction, sleep
make-up, and particularly as a sort of "poor man's meditation",
requiring almost no effort to achieve states of mind that I usually
have found rather hard to achieve with real meditation.

Screen Shot of the Windows Version of Gnaural

The link at the top to the "Gnaural Examples Files" includes some intriguing sounds including "Basic Medication" "Study time" for producing more arousing (annoying) sounds and a more whimsical "Crickets and Frogs" sound script. The sound scripts are called "schedules" and you need to "right-click" and save them to your desktop and then load them into one of the software players.

If you want to get an idea about what Gnaural can do without downloading stuff, go to the Gnaural Java online application.

If you want to remember detailed information and facts including words for your vocabulary, then make your memory the strongest organ. You can memorize fast using MemoryLifter the automated flashcards educational software. MemoryLifter is a superb computer flash cards tool for learning, based on the famous Sebastian Leitner box system. And the best part is that MemoryLifter is freeware!

How Memory Lifter Works: Our brains get bombarded with information provided by our senses. We are presented with too much to store and encode. The brain has developed sophisticated algorithms for throwing away information. The brain has developed algorithms for encoding information into Long Term MEMORY if it is important. We can use these methods of moving information from Sensory MEMORY into Working MEMORY and encoding it into Long Term MEMORY for easy recall later. MemoryLifter™ is designed to lift things into the Long Term MEMORY through controlled repetition and spacing.

The Box System (also called "Leitner system"): originally conceived by German psychologist Sebastian Leitner in the 1960s. Its purpose is to provide a structure for people to learn and retain vocabularies in short-term and long-term memory. The box system is comprised of a set of boxes (10 in the case of MemoryLifter), each containing a certain number of flashcards. This amount rises proportionally with the box's number. Also, the higher the box number, the nearer are the respective cards in the long-term memory. Thus, at any time the quantity of flash cards inside each box level provides a quick feedback of the current state of the user's knowledge, and the memory retention (short-term and/or long-term).

MemoryLifter's box system algorithm: MemoryLifter is based upon the algorithm as developed and tested by Sebastian Leitner a German psychologist. This algorithm is documented in Leitners work - "So lernt man lernen“. This monograph seems to only be available in German but is worth reading if you can find it. It documents Leitner’s us of his ‘cardbox’ or ‘cardfile’ system

Here are some of the software's key features:

Automated Learning - Automate your learning with Sebastian Leitner's learning system based on flashcards in boxes that was designed to repeat facts to be learned in a specific sequence, depending on how well you remember the facts.

Multimedia Enhanced - Greatly enhance your learning experience by including images, audio and video in the learning files.

Personalized Learning - Create your own flash cards learning files for specific topics you want and include your own multimedia clips to enhance understanding and retention.

Customizable Learning Session - Customize the learning mode you find most useful to match the learning material - standard text input, multiple choice, listening comprehension, self assessment and random presentation.

Measure Your Success - Statistics provide the feedback you need to understand how you learn.

Guaranteed Learning - Use the automated learning planner to regularly quiz you to help you remember the learned knowledge.

Here is how the developers of WikiPad describe their software:
wikidPad is a Wiki-like notebook for storing your thoughts, ideas, todo lists, contacts, or anything else you can think of to write down.

What makes wikidPad different from other notepad applications is the ease with which you can cross-link your information. Links in a wiki are created by typing in WikiWords. A WikiWord is any mixed case word typed into the editor. TodoList or JohnDoe are example WikiWords. The term wiki means "quick" in Hawaiian, and wikis are all about quickly linking your information together. Wikis are not a new concept, in fact there are many web based wiki servers available.

wikidPad is a real-time wiki, wikidPad is not a web server, or application server, or groupware solution.

wikidPad is a standalone notepad like application, albeit notepad on steroids. wikidPad is like an IDE for your thoughts.

Some of the features of wikidPad include:

On the fly WikiWord linking, as you type

WikiWord auto-completion

Easy WikiWord navigation

Wiki text styling

WikiWord History

Wiki document attributes

Dynamic views

Tree/Outline view with over 100 icons

Todo lists

Incremental search

Search and Replace

Autosave

Export to HTML

All your data is stored in plain text

URL and file linking

Intuitive keybindings

Help Wiki included

Jim Peters is an open-source programmer who has developed some cool Binaural Beat Software. Here is what he says about the program:

SBAGEN is my utility, released as free software (under the GNU General Public License) for Linux, Windows, DOS and Mac OS X, that generates binaural tones in real-time according to a 24-hour programmed sequence read from a file. It can also be used to play a sequence on demand, rather than according to the clock, or to write a WAV file for playing later. Pink noise, MP3 and Ogg files (since version 1.2.0) may also be mixed with the binaural beats to provide background sounds. (Two files of randomly-looping river sounds are provided from version 1.4.0 onwards). This tool is ideal for anyone who wishes to experiment with these techniques and do research into this for themselves. (For those who would rather pay for a pre-packaged programme with support, I recommend taking a look at the Centerpointe -- and see my disclaimer)

I've tried the software myself and like it. It works on all major platforms so get it here.

ThinkingRock Download of the Day on LIfehacker

Jason Clarke of Download Squad, who did such a good job in his review of comparitive review of MindMeister and bubbl.us has put out another excellent review of a cross-platform freeware program that help people to use the well-regarded Getting Things Done time-management system developed by David Allen.

Here is a excerpt from Jason's review:

While many other task management applications have found ways to incorporate the ideas put forth by the Getting Things Done methodology that David Allen developed, it seems that very few have been built from the ground up as GTD applications. There are certainly a few web applications that can make that claim, but in terms of "offline" applications, the pickings are pretty slim.

One such application, however, is ThinkingRock. Written in Java, ThinkingRock boasts versions for Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux.

Here is a bit from the developers of Thinking Rock about their software:

Thinking Rock is a free software application for collecting and processing your thoughts following the GTD methodology ... A lot of our mental energy is directed towards trying to remember and manage all the things that we want or need to do. Thinking Rock will allow you to clear your mind so that you can become more proactive and concentrate on what is important to you.

Thinking Rock allows you to collect your thoughts and process them into actions, projects, information or future possibilities. Actions can be done by you, delegated to someone else or scheduled for a particular date. Projects can be organized with ordered actions and sub-projects. You can review all of your actions, projects and other information quickly and easily to see what you need to do or to choose what you want to do at a particular time

You can find out more or download ThinkingRock using the links at the top of this post

Updated: Lookout 1.3 has now been renamed Windows Desktop Search and moved by Microsoft to their website. where you can download it for free here.

Original Link for this Post (removed use updated above). Download Lookout 1.3 Free Microsoft Outlook Search Tool (click on link and you will get a promt to either run or save the file -- you can do either. This is safe software) Updated: The folks at Lookout Software (which was acquired by Microsoft) have updated this free Microsoft Outlook search tool.

After the Service Pack 2 hell of the past few months, I had a pleasant surprise visiting the download section at Microsoft. They had added a new software download which already was becoming one of their most popular. It is called Lookout and it is an add-on to Outlook. What it adds lightening fast search to Outlook as well as the ability to index and search your entire My Documents in Windows.

The indexing is fast as is the searches that the indexing allows you to conduct. Apparently Lookout is a company that Microsoft has recently acquired and they have decided to give out the software for free. I believe it is going to give a bunch of companies including 80-20 Software, Enfish, Creo and even Caelo software a lot of grief.

As my regular reader know, I'm a writer by trade and I've discovered a free tool of the trade.

WordWeb is a free English thesaurus and dictionary for Windows, and can be used to look up words from within almost any program in just one click. It works off-line, but can also look up words in web references such as the Wikipedia encyclopedia.

I found out about this slick tools for writing by way of Lifehacker's Rick Broika who has this to say about WordWeb:

This dictionary/thesaurus can look up words in almost any program. Just press the Ctrl key and right-click a word: Up pops WordWeb (and fast, too). WordWeb can also find sets of related words and leverage your Internet connection to pull info from Wikipedia, Wiktionary and other sources. It'll even pronounce words for you.

At the risk of gushing, I think I'm in love! This is an impossibly handy tool, far superior to the dictionary and thesaurus built into, say, Microsoft Word. WordWeb works with all versions of Windows. It's free for personal use!

You can download either the free version (good enough for some) or a trial of WordWeb Pro at this link.

The info for this post comes by way of Lifehacker who shows you how to fold the PockMod in the link at the top of this post

Here is a fun little download which got the following write-up from the NLP site Transform Your Destiny:

Look into the hypnodiscs... if you dare! In ancient times, hypnotists used to use spinning discs painted with spirals to fixate the eyes of their volunteers. Now, these classic props are recreated on your computer with the free Hypnosis Screensaver by Transform Destiny. Try staring into the hypnodiscs for at least thirty seconds, then looking around for a fun optical illusion.
Link for this Post: Download Subliminal Message --- Freeware for Windows and Macintosh!!

If you've been wanting to find out if subliminal message software works but have been hesitant to spend your money on it, now you can use subliminal software for free. Subliminal Message is freeware developed by programmer Paul Young with versions for both the Windows and Macintosh platforms.

The image at the top of the post is the "Control Window" with controls and status display for both versions of the software. The top slider sets the length of on-screen time (1 ms [1/1000 of a second] to 50 ms) for a message.. The middle slider controls the period between messages (1 to 30 seconds) and set the bottom slider for the darkness of the message.

Above are screenshots of the "Message Maintenance window" for both Mac (on right this time) and Windows. This screen which is accessed from the menu bar comes with 90 built-in messages. When you first launch Subliminal Message, the default messages appear in the table. The developer describes more:

.You can add, delete and modify these messages and the messages in the table are saved between sessions. You can clear the table and enter your own messages. A button is provided to save a file with messages in the table and you can load a plain text file of messages. For Mac users, TextEdit works well for this purpose. Type one short message per line and select Format>Make Plain Text before saving the file. (For Windows XP users using Version 2.0.0, NotePad works well; save as a ".txt" file.)

Do subliminal message programs really work? That question is raised on the Subliminal Message download site. Its a question that you can answer yourself at no cost. Download both version by going to the authors site at the link at the top of this post.

EEG biofeedback is synonymous with neurofeedback and describes self-control of brainwaves as measured by EEG. Neurofeedback is a more complex process that GSR feedback used in devices such as Journey to Wild Divine and usually requires more expensive equipment and software.the OpenEEG project is developing a "modular design" for EEG biofeedback equipment as well as new software and hope to make these kinds of consciousness tools accessible to more people.

Here is what the publishers say about their program:

Emotions Manager 2000 is an easy-to-use intuitive software program for maximizing the benefits from your reactions to everyday events, thoughts and emotions. Here is how Lifehacker describes the free web service:

:You've decided to quit smoking, post to your blog, bring lunch to work or regulate your sleeping patterns

every day. Track your progress with Joe's Goals, a Ben Franklin-esque daily points counter. Did you spend the whole day without biting your nails once? Give yourself a point in Joe's Goals. If not, subtract a point. Great for gamers who want to set up a little personal competition for self-improvement.

So until InnerLab goes back online, here is a new download link.

Link for this post: Download HypnoStudio v1.0

HypnoStudio v1.0 is free software for hypnosis and self-hypnosis. Here is how InnerLab decibels their

new free software program,

It was created to let you balance, neutralize, and revert those thinking patterns that have become obstacles in your life, and also to help you imprint in your mind new thinking patterns that can be changed as your needs, desires and goals change.

All this is done by targeting the unconscious mind by means of sound.

Even though some people might disagree, we believe that the power of your mind can improve your own life, and also positively change your environment and the people in it.

The sounds used by HypnoStudio are basically four:

Binaural Beats.

Verbal suggestions. You can incorporate your own verbal suggestions into HypnoStudio simply by typing or pasting text into the Speech Panel, and the software will speak that text for you. You can easily switch between different voices and languages, and control the volume of these voices. With Speech capabilities and the addition of Binaural Beats, you can easily and effectively create a condition in which your brain will register the subtle information that You hav chosen to give to yourself, compensating the invasive external information that sneaks into our minds everyday, and the resulting negative mental programming that it creates. You can also add your own voice by loading a recorded sound file into one of HypnoStudio's four audio channels.

2Know Website for More Information

If you have trouble remembering numbers, 2Know software can help! Here is what the website says about this free software:

2Know is based on a mnemonic system that has proven its effectiveness over hundreds of years. The system transforms meaningless numerical strings into words and phrases. In the system, each numeral, 0-9, is represented by a consonant sound. These sounds are used to form words that can be more easily remembered than the raw numbers.

The system is not computer based. But it sure is easier coming up with meaningful words and phrases using the 2Know program and its large multilingual phonetic dictionaries.

The mnemonic system that the software is based has been around for hundreds of years and has been the basis of stage acts and many other systems. If you like the system that this software is based, you might also enjoy The Memorry Page which has links to a variety of menmonic resources.

Byte Red Software has created Reality Check, a software program that helps you have lucid dreams. Here is what they say about the software:

You can think of this as a random alarm clock. When you click on the "Hide and Start Timer" menu item, the image will disappear and then show up unexpectedly some time later. This is a reminder to do your "reality check". Use it to surprise yourself with a picture of your significant other, your cat or dog, or whatever..

Click on the menu item again, and it disappears for another indeterminate length of time. Why does it behave this way? Browse books or search Google to learn more about lucid dreaming. This program may help train you to be more aware of lucid dreaming

I'd love to get feedback from those of you who try this program so please post your experiences here!

According to a newly discovered resource, the Biofeedback Blog:

(Wild Divine) It is mostly a graphic-heavy adventure game that uses heart rate variability (HRV) and galvanic skin response (GSR) biofeedback to solve the puzzles instead of pointing and clicking. It allows you to see the raw biometric data in numeric and graph forms.

The software flawlessly detected my LightStone and the screen to the right is what you get (click on it to bring it up to full size). Heart rate and GSR are graphed separately.

Its interesting how the LighStone is becoming a kind of development platform for biofeedback software. In a previous post Take Biofeedback Gaming to the Next Level -- New 3D Add-On Game for Journey to Wild Divine, I talked about some third party games developed in my old home town, Santa Cruz California So t will be interesting to see if the people doing the LightStone Zone take this project further.

We've been talking about Web 2.0 -- computer programs sometimes called "web apps" or web services" on the Mindware forum. These kinds of new technology software on a server has popped up on a number of posts, most of them you probably did not think of the posts as being web 2.0 but they fit the model. Some recent ones include on on HipCal and Remember the Milk.

The review article, The Best of Web 2.0 is the best of all the review articles I've seen about Web 2.0. There are the "sticky" Web 2.0 apps, ones I've come back to again and again. The article doesn't cover some of the topics like calendars and to-do lists. But the ones covered which include photos, video, online word processors, social bookmarking, newsreaders , start pages, collaboration tools, chat and more are defiantly the ones I would also recommend.

Another aspect of these services that is great is that they are (at their entry level) all free!

If your like me, having a modern computer with so many applications and the amazingly vast web, full of intellectual goodies and endless eye candy can be a big drain on your productivity.

Well here is a free software product which you can download for free by WebJillion. the company who developed the Time Tracker web application I posted about in early September. Here is what the developer of the program says about it:

I’m in front of my computer constantly and a program I’ve been wanting for a long time is one that would allow me to block certain programs from myself for a set amount of time. A way for the smart part of me to head off the dumb, impulsive lizard part, and a way for me to get more stuff done at the computer.

could never find one, so I decided to just have one made for me. It worked so well and I liked it so much that I was thinking about making it a WebJillion product. But, I decided I didn’t really want to mess with the updates, support and general mess that comes with desktop software. So, instead, I’m giving it away for free. It’s called Temptation Blocker and you can download the installer here.

Now, first, it’s Windows only — 98/2000/XP. Second, it comes completely as is. There won’t be any updates, improvements, and the only documentation is going to be right here in this post. If you have any questions or problems, post a comment and I’ll try to help, but I can’t promise anything. I’ve tested it for a couple weeks now and it works great as far as I can tell, so there’s no risk that it will break your computer, but there could be a few small bugs here and there.

The Main Idea: So, have a major deadline looming or ripe opportunity closing and just don’t have time to waste playing Half Life 2 or checking Bloglines one last time? Well then, add Half Life 2 and Firefox to the list of programs you want to block in Temptation Blocker, set the timer for how long you want to block them and then hit the “Get Work Done!” button.

I have used the software and I find it useful in many ways but also agonizing. I never realized how dependent I am on reading my email every fifteen minutes or browsing the web when I want to. In order to regain use of your applications, you need to put tediously long strings of numbers into the application but then you can use them. Bottom line: if you allow the application to do what its supposed to, you can get tremendous amount of work done!

In a nutshell, the Zamora Personality Test has two parts. The first part is a Test for Individual Attributes. This is a personality test something like the Myers-Briggs which identifies your personality traits. The second part of the test is a Test for Social Attributes and tests how you get along with other people.

In order to determine your compatibility with a significant other, you both take the test and then run through the Personality Compatibility Analysis section of the website. You can either use the software to do these analysis or the online version via the links at the top of this post.

Download RoughDraft Version 3 by clicking here and either saving or running the download

RoughDraft is a word-processor developed by an Englishman named Richard Salisbury. He developed this freeware word-processor with screen-writers in mind although it turns out that it is great all sorts of writing. RoughDraft used to be "donationware" but Salisbury made it free, begging lack of time for updates. However he has already come out with three releases and is hinting at another. Here is some of the details of the software from his site:

1. RoughDraft in action, editing one of three open files. The side panel shows the Files tab which can be used to open files quickly. The live spelling is also activated (misspelled words have squiggly red underlines).

2. RoughDraft in Screenplay Mode., which makes formatting of film and TV plays simple. The Find Bar is also open at the bottom of the window - this lets you search the file without obstructing your text.

3. The Side Panel shows the "Ins." tab, which is used for quick insertion of common words, phrases and special characters.

4. Working with the "Pad" allows notes, lists, names, summaries, etc. to be associated with your work without cluttering it up. The Pad is automatically opened and saved whenever you open or save the main file. A word count has also just been performed.

5. Preparing to print. A preview of the page is shown on the left. The right hand panel allows you to configure various aspects of the printout, such as the header/footer and the margins.

It is a "block breaker" -- that is a creativity tool -- based on "Oblique Strategies" a series of card decks developed by the noted musician Brian Eno in collaboration with others. Here is an excerpt from Apple's Widget Download site.

Oblique

Are you a musician/producer having a blank in the studio? Are you a writer with a sudden writer’s block? Are you an artist staring at a blank canvas? Are you a creative looking at an empty screen?

In comes Oblique — a widget implementation of the famous “Oblique Strategies” card decks from Brian Eno and Peter Schmidt. It features the complete sets of the Original (1975), the Second (1978) and Third (1979) Editions, as well as the elusive, commercially not-available Fourth set (1996) by Brian Eno and Peter Norton.

Download Oblique by going here.
