Google is getting into the holiday spirit once again with its "Send A Call From Santa" website. Last year Google gave jolly old Saint Nick his very own Google Voice phone number (855-34-SANTA), that people could call from their Google Voice accounts (or regular phones).

Santa's got the same phone number this year, so you can call up the North Pole and leave him a message (he can't pick up, because, well…he's pretty busy these days). This is a great tech-savvy way to get your kids' Christmas lists to Santa--instead of having them write it down, just have them dictate it through a VoIP service to Santa's voicemail! Very Christmas 2.0.

You can also send your child (or someone else) a personalized call from Santa using Google's Send A Call From Santa website. Just head on over tosendacallfromsanta.com, fill in some info about the person you want to send a call to (such as name, your relationship, their favorite food, etc.), and they'll get a cool, personalized call from Santa himself.

While you can make the personalized call "kid-friendly," you can also make it funny if you want to send it to your friends. For example, you can have Santa refer to your buddy as your "brother from another mother" who likes to eat "chicken and waffles" before Santa "polishes his rims."

Google naturally sticks some shameless self-promotion in the choices: you can say your friend wants an "Android phone," "better Google Voice number," or "New Gmail Theme" for Christmas. One of the "favorite food" options is Ice Cream Sandwich--a nod to Google's anticipated Android refresh.

It doesn't have to be a Christmas call, either--there are options for Hanukkah and Kwanzaa, as well as non-denominational wintry holidays.

Google is also celebrating the holiday season with a little search trick: search for "Christmas" on Google and you'll be treated to a colorful string of Christmas lights above your search results. Search for "Hanukkah," and you'll be treated to a string of Hanukkah lights. Nothing happens if you search for "Kwanzaa."

On top of all that, Google promises a "bonus surprise" coming out in a few days. We're not sure what it is, but it'll be on the Send A Call From Santa website, and it should arrive shortly…

Samsung Galaxy S II owners will be upgraded to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich in the first quarter of 2012, the Korean manufacturer has announced. The completely revamped OS debuted on the Galaxy Nexus phone this month, and S II models will benefit from the improvements early next year, too.

Samsung said most of its Galaxy-branded devices would get the Android 4.0 update some time next year. This includes the Galaxy S II, S II LTE, Note and R smartphones and the Galaxy Tab 10.1, 8.9, 7.7 and 7.0 Plus tablets as well. There’s no exact timeline for the update on each device, as Samsung said this depends on each market and carriers’ requirements, so individual announcements should follow in the spring.

With Android 4.0, Google hopes to bridge the gap between Android 2.X for smartphones and Android 3.X for tablets. Most parts of the operating system received a makeover with Ice Cream Sandwich; the most notable change is that new devices running the OS do not require the four Android hardware buttons anymore, replaced by contextual software keys. Other new features include face unlocking and Android Beam sharing over NFC (for NFC-equipped devices).

Other Android manufacturers are rushing to get Android 4.0 to their customers, too. Sony Ericsson acted fast and released a version of Ice Cream Sandwich that can be installed on unlocked Xperia devices such as the Arc, Neo V or Ray. Meanwhile, Motorola said the Droid Razr and Bionic on Verizon will get Android 4.0, and HTC is working to bring the updates to some of its devices early in the new year.

We're still waiting for an official Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich phone to go on sale in the United States, but the CyanogenMod team is serving up their take on the new mobile OS for certain phones right now.

CyanogenMod is an aftermarket firmware for Android phones--essentially it's a ROM that brings all kinds of new features and controls to Android, along with a slick interface. The lead developers on the team have been busy the last few weeks building CyanogenMod 9, based off the open source code for Ice Cream Sandwich, whichGoogle recently released.

So far, an alpha version of CyanogenMod 9 is available for the Samsung Nexus S, and there's also a beta for the Samsung Galaxy S.

The builds have been available for about a week now, and the chatter on the user and developer forums has been mostly positive, with the exception of a few persistent bugs involving MMS and a few other things.

CyanogenMod coder Koushik "Koush" Dutta says the development of version 9 is progressing well.

"Everything seems to be running great so far, and this ROM can easily be a daily driver for most enthusiasts," Dutta wrote in the xdadevelopers forum.

It's Risky

The caveat here is that there's always some risk associated with modding or rooting and it's possible to end up with a bricked phone. Be sure to use an app like Titanium to backup everything on your phone before attempting to install CyanogenMod.

So when will CyanogenMod bring its custom flavor of Ice Cream Sandwich to your phone? There's really no telling. As one of the CyanogenMod forum moderators, bassmadrigal recently put it:

"There is no roadmap, and no deadlines. The CM dev team keeps quiet about what they expect to have done and when. Part of this is because the members of the core dev team aren't the only people contributing CM. Many of the features and bug fixes come from people outside of the dev team."

Google appears to be building its very own Android tablet, one designed to compete at the high end of slate spectrum. The company's executive chairman, Eric Schmidt, made the announcement to Italian newspaper Corriere Della Sera, adding that Google's premium tablet could debut within six months.

Schmidt told the newspaper that the tablet's build would be of the highest quality, an indication that Google has no intention of duking it out with the new crop of bargain Android-based tablets, such as the Amazon Kindle Fire and Barnes & Noble Nook Tablet. Rather, it'll compete with the next-generation iPad and premium Android slates like the Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime.

As for price, expect to see a $500 or higher device. Google could drop as low as $400, but probably not below that. However, finding the right recipe of price and features may prove tricky, particularly in light of the Kindle Fire's initial success this holiday season. Consumers have shown they're willing accept a less capable tablet (e.g., slower performance, fewer apps, no cameras) if the price is right.

The iPad, which starts at $500, is a proven success, obviously, but the same hasn't been true for Android tablets. The Transformer Prime may be getting raves from tech reviewers, but it's unclear whether consumers are willing to pay $500 to $600 for a non-Apple tablet.

Given Google's high-end aspirations, its tablet's screen resolution, processor power, storage capacity, and dual cameras (assuming it has two, front and back) must be as good as -- or better than -- what other premium slates will offer six months from now.

So what might Google's tablet look like? Here are some ideas:

Screen resolution

Persistent rumors say the third-generation iPad, which could debut early next year, will have a 2048-by-1536 pixel screen, which is four times as many pixels as the iPad's 1024-by-768 display. That’s impressive but Samsung reportedly has a 2560-by-1600, 11.6-inch screen in the works, according to recent reports. A premium Google tablet would need to match or surpass those eye-popping specs.

Quad-core processor

Premium slates are getting super-charged. The Transformer Prime is the first tablet to feature Nvidia's quad-core, 1.3-GHz Tegra 3 chip. The next iPad will likely feature a new processor, possibly named the A6, which may be quad-core as well. And then there's the aforementioned Samsung slate, which Boy Genius Report says will feature a 2GHz, dual-core Exynos 5250 chip. For Google's tablet to make a splash, a top-of-the-line CPU is essential.

User interface and apps

Google's tablet will almost certainly feature Android 4.0 or later, an interface enhancement that would bring the slate closer to the iPad's finely tuned user experience. A bigger problem, of course, is the dearth of tablet-specific Android apps, and it's unclear if or when that situation will improve with the arrival of Android 4 tablets.

Better cameras

When it comes to tablet cameras, there's plenty of room for improvement. Google will not have a problem topping the iPad 2's camera specs, but it can't afford to get chintzy. The iPad 2's front and rear cameras simply aren't very good, and it'll be a shocker if Apple doesn't upgrade this deficiency on the iPad 3. The Transformer Prime has an 8-megapixel rear-facing camera, and a 1.2-megapixel front camera.

In August, we reported that Stanford University's Jure Leskovec had analyzed human Web behavior, and could predict who your next Facebook friend would be. Turns out it doesn't take a scientist to figure out that your next Facebook friend will be that cool girl you met yesterday at your cousin's barbecue.

New research from NM Incite shows that Facebook users are most likely to add friends if they know them in real life. I know--shocking. In a survey of a representative sample of 1,865 adult social media users, 82 percent said that added Facebook friends if they knew them in real life. (click infographic to enlarge)

I'm not surprised at all--I have over 1000Facebook friends, and I've only added a handful of people that I hadn't already met in real life. And that handful of people was made up of people with whom I had a mutual friend. Having a mutual friend was the next big reason people cited for adding friends--60 percent responded that this was a reason they added Facebook friends.

After "knowing someone in real life" and "having a mutual friend," the reasons for adding Facebook friends were mostly superficial. People cited "physical attractiveness" (8 percent), "quality of photo" (7 percent), and "their number of friends" (4 percent) as reasons for adding friends, along with "business networks" (11 percent), "friend everyone" (7 percent) and "increasing friend count" (7 percent).

NM Incite's survey also asked respondents why they were likely to de-friend Facebook friends. Not surprisingly, "offensive comments" tops the list (55 percent of respondents said this was a reason for de-friending people), followed by "don't know well" (41 percent), and "trying to sell me something" (39 percent). Other reasons for de-friending included "political comments" (14 percent), and "update their profile too often" (6 percent).

In other words, people don't want to be your friend if you're offensive, overly political, always trying to sell them something, or you just talk all the time about nothing--sounds kind of like the real world.

A couple of other interesting tidbits:

* Men are more likely to use Facebook for business networking and dating, while women are more likely to use it as a creative platform--sounds a bit like the typical gender stereotype of women gabbing on the phone while men text "B @ BAR @ 7"

Digital security specialists, major European electronics makers, and experts in biometrics worked together to make passport control at airports faster. The technology also could have broader applications on the way our identity documents are design and on the way we access public services.

The BioP@ss project, funded through the EUREKA micro-electronics cluster MEDEA+, has developed advanced chip cards and embedded software for next-generation biometrics-enhanced passports and identity cards as well as access to pan-European public services. Contactless card scanning and very high speed data interfacing will reduce queues at airports and frontier posts while boosting European security. The technology will improve passengers safety while reducing government administration costs and simplifying access to public pan-European electronic services for citizens. The elements are already being incorporated in systems to meet air travel security standards from 2014.

Some 380 million identity cards are in circulation in the EU's 500 million population. However, security levels must be raised for electronic e-ID cards and passports while also simplifying access to electronic public services for citizens across Europe. The challenge facing the digital security industry was to meet new standards without changing the infrastructure already in use in airports. It was also necessary to speed card reading to cut waiting times and enable access to much more data.

Extended security required

E-passports and e-ID cards incorporate a microprocessor chip storing crucial private information such as biometrics as well as name, date and country of birth. The EU required extended security to ensure that the chip could not be read without physical access to the ID document and that data exchanged between contactless chip and reading device is encrypted.

New technologies and standards developed during the project, implement asymmetric cryptography reliant on a shared key between reading device and chip during authentication. The result is enhanced data confidentiality which prevents skimming or eavesdropping.

Security specialist Gemalto set out to meet the new requirements through a project bringing together 11 partners in five countries covering all elements of the smart-card platform. "Gemalto invests heavily in research to retain its leadership position and we like co-operative programmes such as EUREKA for this type of complex innovative project," explains Patrice Plessis of Gemalto.

While the initial focus was on e-passports and e-ID cards, applications were also envisaged for health-service access, electronic voting and driving licences. "We built on the results of the previous MEDEA+ Onom@Topic project," says Plessis. The project won two years ago the EUREKA Innovation Award, rewarding every year a research project leading to outstanding commercial results.

Match-on-card environment

Facial image verification is the main use of biometrics features with e-passports and e-ID cards. The goal of BioP@ss was to develop an innovative match-on-card biometrics environment, suitable for on-card processing, and to develop an environment enabling users to interact from a biometrics e-ID personal device with a set of multiple near-field communication (NFC) enabled terminals. Concretely, airplane passengers will simply have to pass through a gate with their passport in their pocket to be immediately identified. This could replace the long waiting line at airports' passport controls.

All this required new chip technologies which have provided several innovations such as very high bit rate contactless interfaces, able to transmit thousands of data parameters within a few seconds, advanced biometrics and NFC connectivity that will enable the delivery of innovative services to citizens by simply using a personal e-ID.

Advances in BioP@ss included further development of security chips and encryption technologies, and security software for personal computers. Data transfer rates between cards and readers have been increased more than tenfold -- from 800 kb/s to 10 Mb/s. Moreover, a new chip-card operating system makes it possible to use future e-ID documents on the Internet without any additional software components on the PC.

"We also worked on proof of security for supplemental access control for e-passports, contributing a new standard called PACE -Password Authenticated Connection Establishment-, which was adopted in mid 2011," says Plessis. In addition, the EUREKA project contributed to a new ISO standard for contactless data transfer, currently under consideration, and to the CEN IAS standard for the European Citizen Card.

Increasing security and mobility

BioP@ss made advances in the development of a software making operations on ID related data more transparent, thus creating the necessary protocols for what are already called third-generation passport, e-ID cards and resident permits. Those are very important for the new travel regulations initiated by the International Civil Aviation Organisation, or ICAO, entering into practice from the end of 2014.

The technologies developed are being incorporated into card platforms by the BioP@ss partners. Packages including the technology are already on the market, while card specialists Gemalto and Giesecke & Devrient are working on complete contactless means of Internet authentification. Benefits include increased mobility in Europe with faster and more flexible access to e-government and better protection of personal data. "Moreover, it will be possible to reuse the building blocks developed in middleware/software, biometrics and protocols in other projects and platforms to improve European security and competitiveness," points out Plessis.

Professional safecrackers use a stethoscope to find the correct combination by listening to the clicks of the lock. Researchers at the Ruhr-University Bochum have now demonstrated how to bypass the security mechanisms of a widely used contactless smartcard in a similar way. Employing so-called "Side-Channel Analysis" the researchers of the Chair for Embedded Security (Prof. Dr.-Ing. Christof Paar) can break the cryptography of millions of cards that are used all around the world.

Mathematically secure

RFID smartcards (Radio Frequency Identification) of the type DESFire MF3ICD40 are widely employed in payment and access control systems. The security of these cards is based on Triple-DES, a cipher that is unbreakable from a purely mathematic point of view. DESFire cards are for instance used by the public transport agencies in Melbourne, San Francisco and Prague. The DESFire MF3ICD40 is manufactured by NXP, the former semiconductor division of Philips Electronics.

Fluctuations of the magnetic field

A person is identified as a passenger, employee or customer when his RFID smartcard is placed in the proximity of a reader. To guarantee the necessary level of security, a secret key is stored on the integrated chip inside the card. But just like for the safe, the security mechanism produces the electronic equivalent of the clicks of a mechanic lock. "We measured the power consumption of the chip during the encryption and decryption with a small probe," says David Oswald. The fluctuations of the electro-magnetic field allow the researchers to conclude to the full 112-bit secret key of the smartcard.

Low cost, big damage

Having extracted the keys, an attacker can create an unlimited number of undetectable clones of a given card. The required time and effort are quite low: "For our measurements, we needed a DESFire MF3ICD40 card, an RFID reader, the probe and an oscilloscope to measure the power consumption," says Oswald. This equipment only costs a few thousand euros. Having obtained knowledge on the characteristic properties of the smartcard, the attack takes three to seven hours. The manufacturer NXP confirmed the security hole in the meanwhile and recommends his customers to upgrade to a newer version of the card.

Insufficient countermeasures

Already back in 2008, researchers around Prof. Dr.-Ing. Christof Paar used Side-Channel Analysis to break supposedly secure systems. Three years ago, garage and car doors "mysteriously" opened for the researchers of the Chair for Embedded Security. The employed KeeLoq RFID system -- which customers and manufacturers trusted blindly before -- turned out to be highly susceptible to Side-Channel Analysis, researchers said.

Smartphone Senses Nearby Keyboard Vibrations and Deciphers Sentences

It's a pattern that no doubt repeats itself daily in hundreds of millions of offices around the world: People sit down, turn on their computers, set their mobile phones on their desks and begin to work. What if a hacker could use that phone to track what the person was typing on the keyboard just inches away?

A research team at Georgia Tech has discovered how to do exactly that, using a smartphone accelerometer -- the internal device that detects when and how the phone is tilted -- to sense keyboard vibrations and decipher complete sentences with up to 80 percent accuracy. The procedure is not easy, they say, but is definitely possible with the latest generations of smartphones.

"We first tried our experiments with an iPhone 3GS, and the results were difficult to read," said Patrick Traynor, assistant professor in Georgia Tech's School of Computer Science. "But then we tried an iPhone 4, which has an added gyroscope to clean up the accelerometer noise, and the results were much better. We believe that most smartphones made in the past two years are sophisticated enough to launch this attack."

Previously, Traynor said, researchers have accomplished similar results using microphones, but a microphone is a much more sensitive instrument than an accelerometer. A typical smartphone's microphone samples vibration roughly 44,000 times per second, while even newer phones' accelerometers sample just 100 times per second -- two full orders of magnitude less often. Plus, manufacturers have installed security around a phone's microphone; the phone's operating system is programmed to ask users whether to give new applications access to most built-in sensors, including the microphone. Accelerometers typically are not protected in this way.

The technique works through probability and by detecting pairs of keystrokes, rather than individual keys (which still is too difficult to accomplish reliably, Traynor said). It models "keyboard events" in pairs, then determines whether the pair of keys pressed is on the left versus right side of the keyboard, and whether they are close together or far apart. After the system has determined these characteristics for each pair of keys depressed, it compares the results against a preloaded dictionary, each word of which has been broken down along similar measurements (i.e., are the letters left/right, near/far on a standard QWERTY keyboard). Finally, the technique only works reliably on words of three or more letters.

For example, take the word "canoe," which when typed breaks down into four keystroke pairs: "C-A, A-N, N-O and O-E." Those pairs then translate into the detection system's code as follows: Left-Left-Near, Left-Right-Far, Right-Right-Far and Right-Left-Far, or LLN-LRF-RRF-RLF. This code is then compared to the preloaded dictionary and yields "canoe" as the statistically probable typed word. Working with dictionaries comprising about 58,000 words, the system reached word-recovery rates as high as 80 percent.

"The way we see this attack working is that you, the phone's owner, would request or be asked to download an innocuous-looking application, which doesn't ask you for the use of any suspicious phone sensors," said Henry Carter, a PhD student in computer science and one of the study's co-authors. "Then the keyboard-detection malware is turned on, and the next time you place your phone next to the keyboard and start typing, it starts listening."

Mitigation strategies for this vulnerability are pretty simple and straightforward, Traynor said. First, since the study found an effective range of just three inches from a keyboard, phone users can simply leave their phones in their purses or pockets, or just move them further away from the keyboard. But a fix that puts less onus on users is to add a layer of security for phone accelerometers.

"The sampling rate for accelerometers is already pretty low, and if you cut it in half, you start to approach theoretical limitations that prevent eavesdropping. The malware simply does not have the data to work with," Traynor said. "But most phone applications can still function even with that lower accelerometer rate. So manufacturers could set that as the default rate, and if someone downloads an application like a game that needs the higher sampling rate, that would prompt a permission question to the user to reset the accelerometer."

In the meantime, Traynor said, users shouldn't be paranoid that hackers are tracking their keystrokes through their iPhones.

"The likelihood of someone falling victim to an attack like this right now is pretty low," he said. "This was really hard to do. But could people do it if they really wanted to? We think yes."

The finding is reported in the paper, "(sp)iPhone: Decoding Vibrations From Nearby Keyboards Using Mobile Phone Accelerometers," and will be presented on Oct. 20, at the 18th ACM Conference on Computer and Communications Security in Chicago. In addition to Carter, Traynor's coauthors include Georgia Tech graduate student Arunabh Verman and Philip Marquardt of the MIT Lincoln Laboratory.

First, getting the IP address of victim.

To get the IP address of the victim website, ping for it in command prompt.

For example,

ping www.google.com

will fetch the IP address of Google.com

This is how we can get the IP address of the victims website.

How about your friend’s PC? You can’t do www.yourfirend’sname.com, can you? Finding your friend’s IP address is little tough job, and tougher it is if he has dynamic IP address that keeps changing.

One of the widely used method to detect IP address of your friend is by chatting with him.

Just start chat with him in the mean while open your command prompt and type netstat.

It will give you the list of ip address to which your computer is connecting. The ip appear while you are sending message to him or vice versa will give you the required ip address.

Now you got the IP address right? Is it online?

To know the online status just ping the IP address, if it is online it will reply.

If the IP address is online, scan for the open ports. Open ports are like closed door without locks, you can go inside and outside easily.

Use Advanced Port Scanner to scan all open and venerable ports. You can download it form here :

You’ll be asked to input login information.

Most of the users uses either gmail or yahoo account email address as as primary email address. A genius hacker can easily gain over victims’ gmail account or yahoo email account.

With a double click on their image, you’ll be logged in as them immediately. You can log in to any people's account who is using his account in that network.

5: facebook's can't access account option

There is an recovery option in facebook account. You can mention that your primary email address is also hacked. Then they will ask you many questions regarding that account. as some name of friends, account holder's some personal information etc. If you know about victim well, you can be able to answer all those question. then facebook will ask you for new email address for password recovery. Give any email address which you can access.

So search any free web hosting plans in google you find tons. Create an account in any of web host and upload your pages to its root directory. But make sure your hosts support mail sending from scripts.

Suppose you are going to make Gmail phishing page. Open Gmail login page and save this page to your computer. Now open its html coding and find out form tag inside the html coding. Change action page to your script page which will send you email of hacked user id and password. Page will look like original Gmail page but it will send data to you. Now create the script page using any of language such as php, asp or any other.

Vertical Look Up

This formula searches for value in the left-most column of array and returns the value in the same row based on the index.

=vlookup(search_criterion, array, index, sort_order)

For example, if you want to find the population of the value contained in the cell C2, from all values contained in the range A2:B4, copy and paste the following formula into the cell D2:
=vlookup(C2;A2:B4;2;false)

Filter

This formula returns a filtered version of the given source array.

=filter(range; condition1, condition2,...)

In this example I filtered all values contained in the column A (range A2:A12) greater than 37.

Copy and paste the following formula into the cell B2:
=filter(A2:A12;A2:A12>37)

You can also use multiple conditions to filter a source array:
=filter(A2:A12;A2:A12>37; A2:A12<60)

In this case the formula returns all values contained in the range A2:A12 greater than 37 AND less than 60.

Concatenate

This function concatenates several text strings, contained in different cells, into one string.

=concatenate(text1, text2, text3,...)

If you want to concatenate all values contained in the cells A2, A3, A4 into one string, copy and paste this formula into the cell B2:
=concatenate(A2,A3,A4)

If you want to separate each single value with a space (cell B3), use this formula:
=concatenate(A2," ", A3," ", A4)

Find

This formula looks for a string of text within another string and returns an integer.

=find(find_text, text, position)

For example, if you want to find the "space" within the string contained in the cell C2 (which contains this text: Jack Bauer), copy and paste the following formula into the cell B2:
=find(" ", A2, 1)

This formula returns "5" that means the "space" is found within the source string after 4 characters.

Left and Right

Left extracts a substring from a string, starting from the left-most character.

=left(text, number)

Right extracts a substring from a string, starting from the right-most character.

=right(text, number)

If you want to extract the name "Jack" from the cell A2, copy and paste the following formula into the cell B2:
=left(A2;4)

If you want to extract the surname "Bauer" from the cell A3, copy and paste the following formula into the cell B3:
=right(A3;5)

You can also use the following formula to extract dynamically the name from an array of multiple values (Jack Bauer, Gregory House, Christian Troy, ...):

Split

This formula splits text based on the given delimiter, putting each section into a separate column in the row.

=split(string, delimiter)

For example, if you want to split the values contained in the column A, using the delimiter " " (space), copy the following formula into the column B (the column C will be populated automatically):

Substitute

This formula substitutes new text for old text in a string.

=substitute(text, search_text, new text, occurrence)

If you want to substitute "Jack" with "Mike" from the text contained in the cell A2, copy and paste this formula into the cell B2:

Occurrence (optional, in this case "1") indicates how many occurrences of the search text are to be replaced.

Unique

This formula returns only the unique values in the source array, discarding duplicates.

=unique(array)

If you want to obtain an array of unique values from the values contained in the column A, copy and paste the following formula into the cell B2:
=unique(A2;A9)

As you can see, this formula returns only unique values in the column A, discarding all duplicates.

Google Finance

This function returns market information from Google Finance related to a specific company.

=GoogleFinance(symbol, attribute)

For example, if you want to know the Google stock price, copy and paste the following formula into the cell B2:=GoogleFinance(A2,"price")

You can use the same formula for the other companies in this example (NVidia, Intel, Cisco,...). Other attributes are volume, earning per share, opening price and so on (take a look at the official documentation for a full list).

GoogleLookup

This formula attempts to find the values for straightforward facts about specific things.

=GoogleLookup(entity, attribute)

For example if you want to find the countries of cities listed in the column A, copy and paste the following formula into the column B:

=googleLookup(A2;"country")

Analysis: It's hard to assess, because Twitter still has a few glitches in its facelift.

How do I feel about the major makeover which Twitter unveiled yesterday? Well, it’s been hard for me to come to any conclusions, at least when it comes to the iPhone version. For some reason, it’s refusing to show me my timeline and @replies. Some other folks are reporting problems, too, and the fixes they’ve suggested aren’t helping me. I presume it’s a bug that’ll get fixed.

(It’s also showing me an outdated list of my Direct Messages that’s missing the recent ones -- a glitch I’ve been encountering on multiple platforms for a long time.)

From what I’ve been able to divine by using a secondary account, and by trying the mobile-Web version, the new Twitter looks…okay. The company clearly wants to make it more approachable to folks who aren’t already savvy Twitter addicts. As far as I can tell, I’ll still be able to get the stuff done that’s important to me. Even though some of what’s new -- especially under the Discover tab -- feels irrelevant.

(A new feature called Stories aggregates Tweets on a particular newsy topic. That sounds like it might be fun if I could choose the topic. But it’s a one-size-fits-all thing, so I’m getting Stories on David Stern and Chris Paul -- even though I’m so disinterested in those guys that I barely know who they are.)

Over at Daring Fireball, John Gruber has a more critical look at the new Twitter which rightly points out that the new version loses all the genius of Tweetie, the third-party Twitter client that became the original official Twitter iPhone client. I’m such a fan of Loren Brichter, Tweetie’s inventor, that it’s kind of embarrassing, But now he’s gone from Twitter, and so, apparently, is his spirit. I wonder what he’s working on now?

As Gruber says, changes to the official version of Twitter aren’t a big deal as long as third-party clients continue to offer alternatives. He likes Tweetbot. I’m kind of perennially amateurish when it comes to Twitter: Most often, I use the Web interface or the iPhone and iPad apps. But I do likeHootsuite -- and I can always retreat to it if I have any ongoing issues with the new Twitter.

Google is getting into the Christmas spirit by letting you track Santa on Google Earth or Maps; watch highlights from the man-in-red's magical journey on YouTube; and even leave him a voicemail on his Google Voice Number.

Google has once again teamed up with the Northern American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) to keep an exact fix on the jolly old elf's location in real time. This year, according to Google and NORAD, Santa's 2010 route plan includes more than 200 countries and territories worldwide. You can follow Santa starting at 2 a.m. Eastern Time Friday using the Google Earth Web browser plug-in, Google Maps for mobile or desktop, Twitter, and Facebook. The best part is you can teach your child a little about the world while satisfying their curiosity about Santa's annual journey.

Here's how you to keep tabs on Santa during Christmas Eve 2010.

Google Earth

The easiest way to follow along with Santa is through the Google Earth browser plug-in (not the Google Earth desktop client) for Windows or Mac OS X. For Windows, the plug-in works with Google Chrome, Internet Explorer 6 or higher, Firefox 2.0 or higher, and Flock. Mac users with Intel-based machines (but not PowerPC-based Macs) can use the plug-in with Safari 3.1 or higher, Firefox 3.0 or higher and, unlike last year, Google Chrome for Mac. You can download the Google Earth plug-in here.

Once you install the browser plug-in, visit noradsanta.org and click on Track Santa in Google Earth. You will then be able to watch Santa steering his sleigh right from your Web browser. You can also click on special YouTube videos to see Santa in action at locations around the globe, and clicking on gift icons on will let you learn more about each city. Last year, each gift icon provided images from Google's Panoramio service, as well as Wikipedia entries about each location. It's not clear if Google will offer the same content this year.

Track Santa On Google Maps--Desktop and Mobile

If you don't use the Google Earth plug-in, you can still see Santa's real time location in the standard version of Google Maps. You will also be able to view the YouTube videos and click on the gift icons using Google Maps.

As an added bonus, the Google Maps' Street View Pegman (the little orange man) will also get into the Christmas spirit on Friday by wearing a miniature version of Santa's cap.

After you're done, you'll get a chance to hear the personalized message from Santa to your loved one. After that you can forward Santa's personalized message to a U.S. telephone number, e-mail address or Facebook account.

Santa Gets Government Approval

With billions of children anticipating his arrival in over 200 locations around the world, 2010 is shaping up to be a big year for Santa. But there were early indications that his journey across the United States was going to be impeded this year. The man in red recently upgraded to a next-generation sleigh, dubbed Santa One, that is faster and features improved maneuvering capability when descending into cities and town.

To cross American skies, however, the new aircraft needed approval from the Federal Aviation Authority's safety inspectors. Children around the country breathed a sigh of relief Monday after the FAA announced it had certified Santa's new sleigh for air travel just four days before Christmas Eve. Santa is the only pilot the FAA approves to fly thousands of domestic and international short-haul and long-range flights in one night. The Santa-NORAD Tradition

Norad's annual tradition of tracking Santa Claus on his Christmas trek around the world began quite by accident in 1955 thanks to a Colorado Springs-based Sears. The department store published a newspaper ad promising kids the chance to call Santa on Christmas Eve. However, instead of Kris Kringle's hotline the ad mistakenly printed the direct number for the Commander-in-Chief of Continental Air Defense Command (CONAD), the predecessor to NORAD. CONAD's hotline was reserved exclusively for calls from the Pentagon and high-level military commanders.

That night, however, calls from children soon started rolling in to CONAD's Colonel Harry Shloup, who was director of operations at the time, looking to talk to Santa. Not wanting to disappoint the children, Shloup had his staff check the radar for any indications that a reindeer-powered sleigh was moving southward from the North Pole. Indeed there were indications that Santa was on his way, and children who called in to CONAD that night were given updates on Santa's location. Thus, the tradition of NORAD tracking Santa Claus was born.

Google is making it easier for you to find out where you are, with the introduction of My Location for the desktop. First introduced in late 2007as a tool for Google Maps for mobile, My Location offered directions by triangulating your position based on surrounding cell towers. My Location for the desktop uses Wi-Fi access point information instead of cell towers, but just like the mobile version, My Location on the desktop drops a little blue dot onto your approximate location in Google Maps.

As Google pointed out in its blog post, My Location for the desktop can be a great tool when you arrive in an unfamiliar town and want to get an idea of where you are. Just click on the dot in the upper left-hand side of the map between the zoom and pan tools, and, after you authorize Google to continue, your location will appear on the map. Google says it takes your privacy very seriously and will never use your location information without your permission.

Once Google has located you, it's easy to survey your surroundings and get a sense of where you are. If you're in town for a conference, you can see how far you'll have to travel to get to your meetings or find that hot restaurant you read about. Once you're done exploring the map, just click on the My Location button and the map centers itself back to your location. Click the button again, and the blue dot disappears.

For My Location to work, you need to have a Web browser that supports the W3C Geolocation APIsuch as Google Chrome or Firefox 3.5. If you use Internet Explorer or an earlier version of Firefox you can also download Google Gears to get My Location to work. Google finds your location by getting your Web browser to deliver location information based on the Wi-Fi access points around you. If there aren't enough Wi-Fi points to get a fix on your location, Google can also make an estimate based on you IP address -- although these estimates can often be wildly inaccurate.

It's also possible that My Location may not work at all, in which case you can set your default location on Google Maps and then activate the little blue dot. In my tests, My Location worked well; I was sitting in a public cafe with several Wi-Fi access points around me. The only problem was that my dot kept moving down the block from my location every few minutes, and then came back to the correct spot again (I'll have to ask Google if it sells leashes for My Location dots).

In addition to My Location, Google earlier this year introduced Latitude: a social networking version of My Location that lets friends share their locations with each other and which works on both Mobile devices and personal computers. If My Location and Latitude aren't enough location fun for you, Google will also let you attach your location to your Gmail signature.

Google has a new challenger to its dominance in search, and it may be only a matter of time before you dump Google for the new service. But the new challenger is not Bing or Ask or even search newcomers such as Blekko or DuckDuckGo. Nope; it turns out the latest threat to Google search is Siri, Apple's voice-enabled digital personal assistant on the iPhone 4S, according to Google executive chairman Eric Schmidt.

"Apple has launched an entirely new approach to search technology with Siri, its voice-activated search and task-completion service built into the iPhone 4S," Schmidt says in a recent written response to questions from the Senate antitrust subcommittee. Later, Schmidt called Siri a "significant development" and referred to it as one of many recent "innovations in search."

Schmidt's responses were part of an ongoing investigation by the Senate subcommittee on antitrust into Google's business practices and whether it constitutes a monopoly. Schmidt appeared before the subcommittee in September.

Siri, Really?

At a glance, to say that Siri is a competitor to Google's search product seems ludicrous. First of all, Google has had voice-enabled search for some time on iOS and Android devices, so it's hard to call Siri an "innovation" when it's more of an evolution of existing products and services.

The other problem is that Apple depends on external search engines to feed information to Siri users since the company does not have its own search engine, despite some very old rumors that it is developing one.

So is Siri a "Google killer"? Can Siri seriously threaten Google? Let's take a look.

Siri Defaults To Google

If Siri intends to kill Google, it sure has a funny way of showing it since the iPhone's default search engine is -- you guessed it -- Google. That means any time you do a generic Web search using Siri, your results are coming directly from the world's largest search engine.

But users can tell Siri they want Bing or Yahoo results, according toSearch Engine Land. That means if you want to get Bing results you say something like, "Search Bing for weather" and then you get Bing's weather results instead of Google's. You can also dive into your iPhone's settings to switch your default engine from Google to one of its competitors. But how many people are doing either of these things? My guess is not many.

Google Dominates Mobile Search

Google owns about 65 percent of the U.S. search market, according to the latest numbers from metrics firm comScore. But if you break down market share into mobile searches, Google's dominance becomes even more pronounced, conducting about 97 percent of all searches made from mobile devices, according to Web use tracking firmStatCounter. Another interesting thing to note is that StatCounter's graph has remained pretty well flat for the past year leaving Google unchallenged in mobile search.

iOS Majority of Mobile Web Traffic

While Google may rule the mobile space in terms of searches, Apple's iOS platform makes up the majority of online activity from mobile devices.

The various flavors of iPhones and iPads accounted for 58.5 percent of all mobile digital traffic in August 2011, according to comScore. Iterations of Google's Android OS meanwhile made up just 31.9 percent of digital traffic. ComScore defines digital traffic as browser-based Web page views

With iOS taking the lion's share of online activity among mobile devices, Apple's gadgets could become a threat to Google's dominance in mobile search. But only if Apple decides to end its relationship with Google as the default search provider on iOS devices.

Google's Rivals

Google's claim that it has many competitors has a ring of truth. This is especially true if you look beyond generic search, where the only real competition comes from Microsoft's Bing. If you use Siri to search for local information such as "Italian restaurants nearby," Apple returns results from Yelp instead of Google Place Pages. If you need a quick fact from Siri such as "how many ounces are in two cups?" you will most often get results from Wolfram Alpha instead of Google Calculator. But when it comes to general search, Siri will almost always default to Google.

Other companies compete vigorously with Google. Travel sites such as Expedia and Orbitz deliver flight information, as Google does. Many online shoppers default to Amazon to check prices as opposed to checking figures using Google's shopping engine.

The only problem with Google's claim of robust competition, however, is that almost all paths to online information lead through Google. The chances are that if you are landing on a new site, you are arriving via a Google search.

Google may have rivals and it may even have a problem with getting people to use its search engine on mobile devices if Apple ever dumps Google as iOS's default provider. Google may have some difficulties keeping its lead in the future, but for the moment it's hard to see how Siri presents a serious challenge to Google's dominance in search on mobile devices.

Google only scratched the surface with the latest improvements to its Android mobile operating system. Users have been left wanting more, and they are likely to get it in 2012.

Better graphics, better cameras, and maybe even a voice-command feature similar to Siri--bundled with the latest iteration of Apple's iOS operating system--could be on the horizon for Internet search leader Google.

Android's latest big update, Android 4.0, also known as Ice Cream Sandwich, is coming with the Samsung Galaxy Nexus, and it's only a matter of time before other smartphones and tablets begin seeing the update.

But even as fresh as Ice Cream Sandwich is, users are looking ahead. Android is already installed on tons of smartphones across countless wireless carriers, and that reach is sure to expand with each new update.

Here's what to expect for the little green robot in 2012.

Doing More With Voice

Siri brought voice commands to the masses, and you can bet that Google is working on something similar for Android.

Ice Cream Sandwich already allows for instant speech to text, and voice commands have been a part of the OS since Android 2.0, but they lack some of the personal charms that Apple has given its voice-activated virtual assistant.

While we shouldn't expect a snarky secretary like Siri, we can look forward to Google incorporating voice functions into more of its apps. A great example of this is the new Google Translate app. It has a conversation mode that allows you to translate your speech and the speech of others into one of more than 50 different languages. It's by no means perfect, but it gives us a good idea of how Google can use voice input to make even better apps.

Better Camera Software

When it came to mobile cameras, the stock Android camera software was hardly something to brag about. It was clunky, slow, and had only a few basic settings you could really customize.

Ice Cream Sandwich gave the software a much-needed update, introducing features like panoramic photos and zero lag between snapshots. Future Android updates could include face detection and more-advanced settings for experienced shutterbugs. But those camera improvements wouldn’t just be for phones. Tablets that use video chat would gain better focus and video quality, especially as we begin to see more tablets that run over 4G and LTE networks.

More Apps That Take Advantage of Hardware Acceleration

We've recently seen more phones with dual-core processors, but unfortunately not all apps have been optimized to take advantage of the extra processing power. Starting with Ice Cream Sandwich, however, hardware acceleration is enabled by default, meaning that new apps released on the OS will run smoother and games will look better than their predecessors. Older apps will have to be updated to see a boost in performance, and how an app behaves on a dual-core versus a single-core device will be noticeably different.

More Devices

Android is a versatile OS, and it's been installed on everything from USB drives to robotic bartenders.

At Google I/O 2011 (an annual developer conference), Google launched the Android@Home project, a framework for Android to be installed into automated "smart" houses. These Android smart houses would communicate with other Android-powered gadgets to make life easier for the people inside.

Some car manufacturers are even looking into Android to power the media consoles in their vehicles and to do things like media sharing from phones to the car. If it has a chip in it, chances are someone will try to install Android into it.

Lighter Overlays

Android overlays are no big deal as long as they don't get in the way of the Android experience.

Overlays can add a lot of functionality--such as what we saw on Honeycomb tablets--but on phones, most of them are clunky and resource-heavy. With Ice Cream Sandwich incorporating a ton of useful features that were previously seen only on HTC and Samsung devices, overlays are slowly being toned down.

A good example: Motorola's MotoBlur overlay. Once an overwhelming and visually assaulting UI, the MotoBlur overlay has been greatly reduced to a lightweight skin that blends in relatively well with the stock Android UI.

The iTunes store has not only apps and music, but also movies, TV shows, and even books. With the launch of Google Music, Google is trying to create a similar ecosystem for Android.

Why it's worth checking out: Nuance's Dragon line of software has set the standard for PC-based voice recognition. If you're looking for a company that knows voice products, look no further.

If you talk to your desktop PC, it's probably for all the wrong reasons--usually to hurl expletives at the machine for not working properly. Well, users of the desktop version of Google Chrome now have a more productive reason to get chatty with their computers. Google has added voice search for Google Maps to Chrome, offering users a (sometimes) faster way to get directions.

The main Google Maps interface in Chrome now includes a microphone icon. When you click it, a "Speak Now" dialog appears.

How well does it work? Pretty well in my brief testing, albeit with a few hiccups. When I said, "Petaluma to San Diego," Google Maps understand me perfectly and posted the map below.

And when I asked Google Maps to find my old street address in Denver, Colorado, it got it right, displaying a Street View thumbnail and a map of my previous residence. Stalkers, this one's for you.

Maps isn't perfect, though. It tripped up twice on "Saskatchewan," interpreting the Canadian province's name as "Josh want" and "gotcha wanna" before getting it right the third time.

Can you say a name and city, and get a correct street address? I tried using my own name. "Jeff Bertolucci, Los Angeles, California" came out as "yahoo salucci, los angeles, california."

OK, so Google Maps' voice search isn't perfect--particularly for somewhat exotic-sounding places and names--but it seems fairly reliable overall.

And since smartphone users already use voice input to get directions and other info, it's good to see that desktop PC users can get vocal too.

Voice search is coming to Chrome for PCs. At a media event today in San Francisco, Google announced that it's bringing speech recognition to desktop and laptop versions of its Web browser.

Voice input is a popular feature among users of Google Android mobile devices, where tiny physical and screen keyboards often make typing difficult.

Google is adding voice search to the latest version of Chrome for desktops. To use the feature, your PC will need a built-in or attached microphone--pretty much standard equipment on today's webcam-equipped laptops.

Voice Search for Chrome in English is "rolling out now," Google says, but you may not see the feature right away. (I'm using the latest version of Chrome and wasn't able to access voice search as of Tuesday afternoon, US Pacific Time.)

Here's how it works: When you go to Google.com, you'll see a microphone icon in the far right corner of the search box. Click it and speak your query:

Voice search is useful for lengthy queries and for words that are hard to spell. Google's demo video uses the phrase, "weather for Schenectady, New York," as an example.

Google continues to fine-tune its speech recognition technology, which is growing in popularity. Its English Voice Search system now uses 230 billion words from actual user queries, allowing it to better recognize phrases people are likely to say, the company says.

Google's voice search traffic has risen six-fold in the past year, an increase that speaks to the popularity of speech recognition on mobile devices. It will be interesting to see if desktop and laptop PC users show the same enthusiasm for voice input.
