Good morning from Greenwood, Maine. This week I had the opportunity to work with teachers at Bridgton Academy just a few miles down the road from the Free Technology for Teachers world headquarters (AKA, my house). It was a great day from both a learning standpoint and weather standpoint. In fact, it was so nice that I didn't even change out of my work clothes before taking my dogs to splash in the pond. Days like that one remind me that the end of the school year isn't too far away. I know that for many of you this coming week is the last week of your school year. I hope it's a great one for you!

Saylor Foundation Launches Independent "Courses" for K-12

The Saylor Foundation recently announced the launch of one of their new initiatives, independent courses. In the title of this post I put quotation marks around courses because it's a stretch to say that they're actually courses. Rather they're more like big outlines for independent study. The outlines include alignment to Common Core standards, suggested learning activities, and collections of tutorials and reading materials. The Saylor Foundation's courses currently include geometry, calculus, algebra, American Literature, and SAT prep.

Applications for Education
I wouldn't set students off to use The Saylor Foundation's new courses as a replacement for direct instruction. I would feel comfortable having students consult the courses for independent review after going through lessons with a teacher.

Earlier this week Google announced that they will be launching Google Play for Education this summer. Google Play for Education promises to provide many of the features that teachers have wanted to have available through Android for a long time now. If you want to be one of the first to know when Google Play for Education is available, sign up here on the Google in Education page.

I think that the best part of Google Play for Education will be the ability for teachers (or administrators) to purchase apps and push them out to all of the devices in their schools. If the entire school is too big of a group, the option to create smaller groups of devices will be available too. Teachers will also be able to use Google Play for Education to push video and documents out to all of the devices in a group.

Design Squad - Engage Kids in Hands-on Engineering Projects

Design Squad from PBS Kids features a great collection of hands-on activities for elementary and middle school students. The activities are designed to help students explore engineering concepts. The collection of activities is divided into ten categories. The categories are technology, structures, sports, space, sound, simple machines, health, green, energy, and electricity. Each activity contains a materials list and directions. Some of the activities also have demonstration videos.

Applications for Education
Having students try the Design Squad activities could be a fun way to get kids interested in engineering.

In addition to the hands-on activities, Design Squad has animations that you can download to use in your engineering lessons.

Copyright on Campus - A Six Minute Exploration of the Nuances of Copyright

Copyright and Fair Use are cloudy areas for many students and educators to try to navigate. This evening I found Copyright on Campus which is a six minute cartoon that does a nice job of explaining many of the nuances of copyright as it applies to educators. While the explanations are given for a collegiate setting they could be applied to K-12 too. The video is embedded below.

Copyright on Campus was produced by the Copyright Clearance Center which is a for-profit organization. That is probably why the video lacks a balanced discussion of section 107 of Title 17 of the Copyright Law of the United States. Rather than making you go look it up, I've pasted the content of section 107 below.

Notwithstanding the provisions of sections 106 and 106A, the fair use of a copyrighted work, including such use by reproduction in copies or phonorecords or by any other means specified by that section, for purposes such as criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching (including multiple copies for classroom use), scholarship, or research, is not an infringement of copyright. In determining whether the use made of a work in any particular case is a fair use the factors to be considered shall include—

(1) the purpose and character of the use, including whether such use is of a commercial nature or is for nonprofit educational purposes;
(2) the nature of the copyrighted work;
(3) the amount and substantiality of the portion used in relation to the copyrighted work as a whole; and
(4) the effect of the use upon the potential market for or value of the copyrighted work.
The fact that a work is unpublished shall not itself bar a finding of fair use if such finding is made upon consideration of all the above factors.

The Old Reader - A Google Reader Alternative That Looks A Lot Like Google Reader

Ever since Google announced that Reader will be shut-down on July 1 I have been recommending Feedly and Flipboard as alternatives. Both of those services use a magazine-like format to display your RSS subscriptions. Some people like that while others wish that they could stick with the old Google Reader lay-out. If you prefer the old Google Reader interface you might want to try The Old Reader.

The Old Reader is a free service that you can use to subscribe to RSS feeds and read all of the latest content from those sources in one place. So that you don't have to re-subscribe to the blogs that you love, The Old Reader will allow you to import your Google Reader subscriptions. You'll notice that The Old Reader looks and acts very similarly to Google Reader. The Old Reader will allow you to share posts, write notes about posts appearing in your account, and organize your subscriptions into folders.

Applications for Education
You don't need to be fanatical about subscribing to blogs the way that I am, but it is important for personal professional development to have a collection of blogs and websites that you follow for education news. The Old Reader makes it easy to subscribe to blogs and read them at your leisure.

Next Vista for Learning - Videos of the Year

Google Apps for Education Gets Streamlined Storage Too

A couple of days ago Google announced that personal Google Accounts will now be able to allocate 15GB of storage however they like across Drive, Gmail, and Google+ photos. Today, Google announced the same will be true for Google Apps for Education too. The bonus for Google Apps for Education users is that you will have 30GB of storage to use between Drive, mail, and Google+ images. This change will be rolled-out over the next few weeks.

Shakespeare Uncovered - Videos and Lesson Plans

Shakespeare Uncovered is a collection of videos and lesson plans hosted on PBS Learning Media. The collection is organized into twenty-one smaller, thematically collections. Some of the themes are "Shakespeare and History," "The Use of Soliloquy," and "Gender Roles in Shakespeare." Each collection includes short, documentary video clips, reading materials, and discussion questions. And like almost any new U.S.-based education site launching today, Shakespeare Uncovered includes a list of Common Core standards that can addressed through the use of the materials on the site.

Applications for Education
Shakespeare Uncovered is designed for high school students to explore more than just the writing of Shakespeare. The materials in Shakespeare Uncovered can provide a deeper understanding of what influenced Shakespeare's writings.

Backpack Practice - Talk Your Way Through Review Guides

Backpack Practice is new site from the creators of Backpack TV. The purpose of Backpack Practice is to provide a place on which students can practice basic skills and review facts in math, science, social studies, and language arts. On Backpack Practice rather than typing or dragging and dropping answers into place students speak their responses into their computers. Backpack Practice keeps track of the number of correct and incorrect responses throughout each activity that students use.

Backpack Practice only works in Google Chrome. See how it works in the video below.

Applications for Education
Backpack Practice could be a good site for students to use to review for an upcoming quiz without having to type.

Four Approaches to Getting Content OFF Elementary Students' iPads - No Email, No Problem, Part 2

This is a guest post from Beth Holland at EdTechTeacher.org which has been an advertiser on Free Technology for Teachers for the last year.

As I wrote in Three Approaches for Getting Content to Elementary Students' iPads - No Email, No Problem, a major challenge of working with iPad is actually working with iPad. Unlike a computer, iPad does not function as well in a shared environment because of the challenges of workflow - getting content on and off of the devices. The lack of email, coupled with the Terms of Service that preclude those under the age of 13 from having a cloud storage account, further complicate the problem. In my first post, I outlined three potential approaches for distributing content to students without using email or logins. However the next challenge is to get the work that students create back OFF of iPad.

It is critical to create a plan for getting work OFF of iPads before beginning a project as it may impact the tool(s) and app(s) that you choose.

Approach #1 - Cloud Storage

Much like getting work to students via Cloud Storage, it is also possible to get work OFF iPad as well. More and more apps recognize that workflow is a challenge and have added Drive, Dropbox, Box, or Evernote as options to their action menu (the arrow coming out of the box). For students to share work back with their teachers, they could send it to a shared folder within that cloud service. For example, a student creates a screencast with Explain Everything and then sends their project to Dropbox for either their peers or the teacher to see.

Cloud Storage + Camera Roll = more options

Some apps may not share directly to a cloud storage option. In that case, do not underestimate the value of first saving to the Camera Roll. Whether a student takes a screen capture of their work, saving it to the camera roll, or exports a photo or video from another app such as Skitch, Animoto, or PageSend, once in the camera roll more options exist.

Dropbox has an option to automatically upload content stored in the camera roll to an account. This could be a simple way for students to easily share their work with you or the class. It is also possible to upload images and video to Google Drive from the Drive app. In Evernote, images - but not video - from the Camera Roll can even be added to notes.

With whichever cloud you choose, in order for students to share work, the app needs to be installed and logged into an account. Though this provides a relatively easy solution, two issues still exist. First, if all students use the same account, it is possible for them to accidentally delete another students' work. Second, it does skirt some of the Terms of Service with regard to students under 13 using the app.

Approach #2 - Email

All apps have one trait in common: the ability to share by email. Some apps may attach a file to an email while others may share a link. However, it is one of the easiest ways to get work OFF iPad. Suggesting email may seem counterintuitive as most elementary students do not have their own account; however, a school could put a single account on each iPad that allows students to send OUT. In fact, the students don't even need to know the email address.

Send to Gmail

Hundreds of projects flooding your inbox may sound like a logistical nightmare. I once worked with a teacher who created a separate homework Gmail account just for student assignments. This way, she not only avoided an inbox flood, but could also leverage the labels and filters inherent to Gmail.

Imagine directing a student to share their screencast by email. You provide instructions that the subject line of the email include their name as well as the title of the project. Not only does this begin to model email etiquette, but it also enables you to create custom filters on the Gmail account to automatically label based on the subject line. In fact, a project could then be curated into both the students personal label as well as one for the specific project.

Send to Evernote

Every Evernote account has its own email address. This means that students could email work directly to a teacher's Evernote account rather than an inbox. More specifically, if a teacher has created a set of notebooks in advance for either individual students or projects, then the student could email directly to that notebook. The tutorial below shows the mechanics of finding your Evernote email address and sending to a notebook.

An unintended consequence of sending to Evernote is that teachers can have their students support the curation of their own portfolios. In addition to storing the digital learning artifacts that students create, Evernote can also hold audio recording of their thoughts, as well as photos of what they create in the physical world, and even the teacher's typed notes about the learning process.

Approach #3 - Use a Learning Management System

While a Learning Management System (LMS) is a great tool for disseminating content to students, because of the lack of file structure inherent to iPad, it is not always the best solution for collecting back work created by students. Two FREE systems that work well for closing the loop in elementary classrooms are Edmodo and Schoology - though they do require that each student have an account.

With Edmodo, anything in the Camera Roll can be uploaded and added to assignments or notes which can then either be "turned in" or shared. Schoology, on the other hand, includes the ability to submit projects from almost any app. The video below from Jennie Magiera provides a great walk-through of workflow with Schoology.

Approach #4 - Leverage the Web

Let's assume that it is not possible to install cloud services, assign email accounts to iPads, or leverage an LMS. It is still possible to get student creations OFF of iPad with selective choices of apps. Some of the best apps for elementary students - ScreenChomp, Educreations, Fotobabble, Animoto, Croak.It to name a few - all create web links for completed projects.

Create Class Accounts

One of the great features of apps such as Educreations is that all of the iPads can be logged in to a single teacher's account. As soon as a student completes and saves a screencast, it automatically appears on the web - complete with a link and an embed code for future sharing. As demonstrated by Carrie Booth's kindergarten students last fall, it is possible for even the youngest students to learn how to save to a class account.

Links & Google Forms

Some apps, such as ScreenChomp and Croak.It, automatically generate links, but how do you then curate them into one place? A simple solution could be to create a "turn it in" or "share your project" form. This could be a single form, maybe even added to the home screen of every iPad, that may just ask for the students' name and a link that could be copy & pasted. If the resulting spreadsheet is viewable by all students, it also becomes an easy platform for them to experience each other's creations.

No Single Solution

Once again, a single solution to the workflow dilemma does not exist. Planning, testing, and experimenting are critical to coming up with the best possible options for your students to be able to access content on iPad and then share their creations.

Upload Your Own PDFs and EPUBs to Google Play Books

This evening Google announced a great update to Google Play Books. You can now upload your own PDFs and EPUB files to Google Play Books. Upload your files and you can read them on your iPad or Android device with the Google Play Books app (click here for iOS app, click here for Android app). When you upload your files you will be able to bookmark, highlight, and the dictionary tools just like you can with any other book in the Google Books app. Directions for uploading files to Google Play Books are included below.

Applications for Education
Students could use the new upload option to add study guides and notes to Google Play Books to take them anywhere in a digital format.

Google Play for Education Promises What Teachers Have Wanted from Android

While I was busy leading a day of learning about iPad apps at Bridgton Academy Google announced a new service that could make Android tablets a stronger challenger to iPads in education. Google Play for Education (not live yet) promises the features that many of us have wanted for a long time.

Google Play for Education will be an app store designed specifically for teachers and students. Developers will be able to submit their apps this summer. Some selected developers announced at I/O include NASA and PBS. The best part of Google Play for Education will be the ability for teachers (or administrators) to purchase apps and push them out to all of the devices in their schools. If the entire school is too big of a group, the option to create smaller groups of devices will be available too. Teachers will also be able to use Google Play for Education to push video and documents out to all of the devices in a group.

One thing to keep in mind about pushing apps and videos to Android devices through Google Play for Education is that all of the devices will have to be part of a Google Group created through Google Apps.

A New Version of Google Maps Is Coming Soon to a Browser Near You

The annual Google I/O conference started today. This is the event at which Google announces a slew of updates and new offerings. One of the announcements that grabbed my attention was the launch of a new version of Google Maps.

For students and teachers the most notable aspect of the new version is a streamlined integration of Street View and 3D Earth View imagery. The new version of Google Maps will have an image carousel that you can open at the bottom of your screen. That carousel will allow you to quickly zoom to a Street View or Earth View complete with 3D imagery. This appears to eliminate the need for the Google Earth Browser Plug-in if you're using Chrome.

One of the new features of Maps that Google is touting most highly is improved discovery of places of interest near locations that you click on the map. Another new feature is the option to compare routes between places based upon the mode of transportation you intend to use.

Depression Quest - An Interactive Story About Depression

Depression Quest is a website that features an interactive story designed to educate people about depression. The story puts you in the place of a twenty-something person that is struggling with depression. Throughout the story you are presented with choices to make that influence the next phase of the story. The story has 150 different scenarios and five possible outcomes at the end based on the choices you make as you read through the story.

Applications for Education
Depression Quest is a site that I would love to see high school students use in their health classes. The scenarios are very realistic and I know that some students will relate very strongly to some of the scenarios. For other students the scenarios will provide them with some understanding of what depression sufferers feel. All students completing the story will learn about the signs of depression.

ActiveNote - Organized Sticky Notes & Reminders

ActiveNote is a free Windows 8 application that brings organization to sticky notes. ActiveNote organizes your sticky notes into three columns; active, completed, today. To add a sticky note you just have to type it out and it is automatically assigned to the active column. You can assign a day and time stamp to your sticky notes. The day and time that you assign to your notes will be used to remind you of the notes when the time is appropriate. When you have completed a task on one on your sticky notes you can drag it into the completed column.

Applications for Education
If you or your students are using Windows 8 computers, ActiveNote could be a good tool to help you keep track of the important things that you need to do.

Music Maker Jam - Music Creation on Windows 8

Music Maker Jam is a free Windows 8 app for creating music tracks to download and use in multimedia projects. Music Maker Jam provides four styles of music that you can modify (additional styles are available for purchase). Choose a style then use the virtual instrument tracks to modify the music track. You can increase or decrease the volume of each instrument and modify the tempo of your tracks. You can also add or remove an instrument from your music tracks. When you're happy with the sound of the music you've created you can download your music as an MP3 file.

Applications for Education
Music Maker Jam could be a good tool for students to use to create recordings to use as bumper music in podcasts or to use as the background music in a video project.

10 Expectations That Students Have of Schools

What My Dog Can Teach Us About Managing 1:1 Classrooms

I have two dogs, Morrison and Max. Morrison is my older dog, he's between ten and thirteen years old. Morrison was an adult when I adopted him and he's never gotten into trouble when left alone in the house.

Max is my younger dog, he's two years old. I adopted Max six months ago. Max will get into trouble if he is left alone in the house for more than ten minutes. But if Max gets to run around, play fetch, or go on a long walk before he's left in the house, he doesn't get into trouble when he's left alone in the house.

My experience in 1:1 classrooms is much like my experience with Max. If you are having students use their devices for engaging and challenging work then they are less prone to wandering off task to check email, update Facebook, or to play games. If you are just having students use their devices to take notes while you lecture, they're highly likely to do things you don't want them to do.

Applications for Education
Inserting images into Google Forms could be a great way to create quizzes in which you ask students to identify people, places, and things.

This feature has not been rolled-out to all users, yet. If you're a Google Apps for Education user who still has the old Google Forms layout you won't see this option.

How to Create Multimedia Projects Using Mozilla's Popcorn Maker

Mozilla's Popcorn Maker is a free tool for crafting videos that incorporate images, remixed video clips, links, and social feeds. It can take some time to get the hang of all of the features of Popcorn Maker, but it is a powerful tool. Kevin Hodgson, whose blog is one of the ten I read first, recently published a nice screencast that walks you through the process of using Mozilla's Popcorn Maker. The screencast is embedded below.

Google Streamlines Storage for Drive, Gmail, and Google+

If you're running out of storage in your personal Gmail, Google Drive, or Google+ account there is potentially some free relief coming for you. Today, Google announced that you will now have 15GB of storage to use across Drive, Gmail, and Google+. Previously, you had 10GB for Gmail and 5GB for Drive and Google+ photos and they were counted as separate entities. Now, all three services will be counted as one for storage purposes. This means that if you don't use Gmail much, but you use Google Drive a lot you'll essentially have more space for files in Drive.

This change will be rolling-out over the course of a couple of weeks so if you don't see it right away, it's coming to your account soon.

5 Excellent Educational Activities Developed by @RusselTarr

Over the weekend Russel Tarr who has developed many excellent, engaging tools for teaching history was the subject of an unprovoked and unfair attack by England's Education Secretary, Michael Gove. You can read all about it here. I appreciate Russel's work and I know that many other history teachers do too. To support Russel I'd like to highlight five of his Active History activities.

The Worst Jobs in History is a series of three interactive learning experiences. In The Worst Jobs in History students learn about the dirtiest, most dangerous, and tiring jobs in three time periods. The time periods are Medieval, Early Modern, and Modern. In each activity in The Worst Jobs in History students read short descriptions of jobs and rank them according to how dirty, dangerous, or tiring they think that they are. After ranking the jobs students can take a short online quiz about what they read about the jobs. There is also the option to download a worksheet to use with the activities.

Mission Map Quest is a map-based tool for creating virtual treasure hunts. The concept is simple, you create a series of clues that your students need to follow to identify places around the world. You can add as few or as many clues to your Map Quest as you like. When you're ready to have students try your Quest just give them the web address of the challenge or have them scan the QR code assigned to your Quest. The QR code in this post will take you to Russel's demonstration of Mission Map Quest. You can also click this link to try it from the student perspective. The demonstration has a WWI theme.
