This post gave me a funny insight into our differences in perspective: when you DO post, I think "oh, goody: Natalie has shared some of her wonderful thinking and writing with me!!!", and when you don't post, I just hope you're ok. I don't DESERVE your posts, I certainly don't feel I have any right to expect them.... But when I click over and they are there, I know I'm in for a treat. And I feel LUCKY. Thank you, again- and please always make taking good care of yourself your top priority.

Since you've brought it up -- one of my favorite maps: Y'all vs You All vs You Guys in the US

Coming from "you all" land, I naturally thinks it's best. But, assuming Canada is teal territory, "you guys" is clearly dominating the continent.

I have been following RadFem2012, yeah. I made a bunch of tweets about it this morning, asserting 1) That it's relatively easy to reframe this in such a way they're not locking us out, but rather locking themselves in. And 2) That we ought make this Our Transsexual Summer in response.

There's a similar event being held in Portland in July, and it seems that this is mostly just a veiled book tour for Sheila Jeffries' new transphobic hate-screed. So these conferences are actually DIRECTLY intended as transphobe rallying points, NOT simply radical feminist conferences that happen to overlap with the views of some transphobic "bad apples". It's heavily coded, but these two conferences are intended very much as being PRINCIPALLY about excluding trans people and sex workers and other groups from feminism, and trying to keep feminism from progressing forward into meaningfully addressing these issues.

Fourth wave. This is happening. And it's not going to not happen.

The fact that there's been a lot of very, very awesome, positive actions and rallying from trans people and allies alike in response to these conferences is a great thing, and suggests we're nearing the point where we'll be able to ditch these haters, leave them to their angry, insular, irrelevant little meet-ups, and move feminism forward without them.

Natalie, I want to respectfully express to you my disagreement. I assert that careful textual analysis is an important aspect of critical thinking. I'm kinda of dork and looked the term up in the dictionary and found this:
GUY
1.
Informal . a man or boy; fellow.
2.
Usually, guys. Informal . persons of either sex; people.
3.
Chiefly British Slang . a grotesquely dressed person.
Following definition 1, I've been misgendered. Following definition 2, I'm too touchy. But if I use definition 3, I have no fashion sense. I'm sorry Natalie, I've been sober and clean (even from ganja) for the last 2 1/2 weeks and I'm hella ornery right now. I'm really just joshing ya. Although I did read an awesome essay in Bitch magazine many years ago that intelligently asserted how improper it is to use guys for a group of males and females. If I remember correctly it was included in the anthology called Bitchfest. One more thing, and this is a serious inquiry: Does the term guys include or exclude our non-binary gender variant cousins? I was once at an trans event where someone began to speak by addressing the group 'ladies and gentlemen' only to have a genderqueer kid become triggered and break down in tears. Ouch.

As it happens I just picked up that Julia Serano book last week - started reading it today.

Kinda off topic, but I'm guessing you've seen the whole Twitter storm over the RadFem2012 conference happening in London next month? Nothing new, I know, but it's the first time I've seen the issue of trans inclusion cause a split between any feminist group I've been part of. Think I may have lost some friends over it. Have heard some horrible views from people I never would have had down as transphobes, and I'm starting to wonder if there's any point in engaging with these people at all...

Yeah, I'll probably do Part Three (or are we up to Four?) next Friday (June 1st). It's going to be a five part series, total, with a sixth post as a summary of all the themes.

Actually... we can totally use this comment thread if anyone wants to ask me about anything, or the blog itself, or suggest posts, or whatever.
