Freevlog is going to the Open Video Conference. Our presentation is:

What Video Makers Want
As it stands today, cameras shoot video in all different codecs; operating systems have various collections of editing applications; and each editing application supports a certain set of codecs – none of which may be the codec your camera uses. And once you've created a video you then have to navigate a world of multiple browsers, plugins and network capabilities. Sometimes it seems like a wonder that anyone gets video online at all.

From acquisition, to editing, collaboration, and distribution, video makers need a free, open-source and cross-platform solution. We have a vision of what this might look like but we need the passion and the skills of developers to help make it a reality. This session will be a demonstration of what the current roadblocks for video makers are and an exploration of what the future of Open Video could look like.

There are going to be lots of videobloggers at the conference along with coders, lawyers, academics and entrepreneurs all focused on transparency, interoperability, and further decentralization in online video. Come participate in the future of video - June 19-20 at NYU Law School.

The New Freevlog

If you've been here before you may be wondering what the hell happened. Well about a year ago I was pretty sure that Freevlog had served it’s purpose and wouldn’t need an update when it’s tutorials were no longer useful – after all there’s YouTube. The whole idea of people putting their own video on the web is completely normal now unlike early 2005 when I put up the first version of Freevlog.

But over the last year I have to say I’ve become excited about the future of video on the web all over again. From the incredible difference video made in last year’s election to my own experiment with live web video to the possibilities of an open video platform it feels like there are new things to explore. And as Ryanne and Jay have been traveling all over the world (they’re in Australia right now) teaching people to tell their stories, they’ve found that we need even better tutorials. So you’ll notice that they’ve put together a number of new lessons on storytelling and the ins and outs of actually producing video.

There’s more work to be done – more tutorials to be made and more work on the site to complete (this is my first Drupal website) but we thought it was best to put it out there now and just keep adding to it as we go along. We hope you find it useful.

Jay and I wanted to create a video that could serve as a template for these tutorials. We chose to tell the story of our friend’s home birth because it was important to us. As you’ll see, we use all the techniques illustrated in these tutorials. This has become one of our most discussed and linked-to videos. We’ve even started burning DVDs for midwives around the country to use in their home-birth classes. This is a perfect example of how a strong, well-told story can spread online and create action in the world.
