Calls to impeach embattled Illinois governor grow

CHICAGO (AP) — As calls for his impeachment intensified, Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich opened his front door to let three clergymen into his home on Friday, waving to the media before returning inside.

The governor has been alternately holed up in his home or his downtown office since his arrest Tuesday on federal corruption charges, accused of scheming to sell President-elect Barack Obama's Senate seat to the highest bidder.

The lieutenant governor has joined a bevy of lawmakers in demanding that Blagojevich be impeached, saying he has become an embarrassment to the state and can no longer lead. His approval rating plummeted to a shockingly low 8 percent.

"When you have no confidence from the people, in a democracy there's nowhere else to go but to resign," Lt. Pat Quinn said Thursday.

The impeachment push was part of a riveting political drama that extended from Illinois to Washington.

The Chicago Tribune reported on Friday that businessmen with ties to both Blagojevich and U.S. Rep. Jesse Jackson discussed raising $1 million for the governor to help persuade him to appoint Jackson to Obama's Senate seat.

Citing unidentified sources, the Tribune reported that businessman Raghuveer Nayak and Blagojevich aide Rajinder Bedi told attendees at an Oct. 31 meeting that they needed to raise the money for the governor to ensure Jackson's appointment.

"Raghu said he needed to raise a million for Rod to make sure Jesse got the seat," an unidentified source who attended the meeting told the Tribune. Blagojevich also attended the meeting, which was sponsored by Nayak, an Oak Brook businessman.

A message left at a listing for Raghuveer Nayak in Oak Brook was not immediately returned early Friday. No published listing for Bedi could be found.

According to the FBI complaint, the Oct. 31 meeting took place the same day federal prosecutors intercepted a conversation in which Blagojevich claims he'd been approached by a representative for an unnamed "Senate Candidate 5" who offered cash in exchange for the Senate seat.

On Wednesday, it was revealed that Jackson was the candidate.

Jackson spokesman Rick Bryant told the Tribune that while Jackson discussed the Senate seat with Nayak, he never asked him to do anything.

The scandal also drew Obama into the fold. He made his first public comments about it Thursday, calling charges that Blagojevich put Obama's U.S. Senate seat up for sale appalling and saying neither he nor his aides had any involvement in the governor's alleged scheming.

Blagojevich seems to be in no hurry to leave office. The besieged Democratic governor spent a second day ignoring demands that he quit, showing up to work and dealing with legislative business.

Blagojevich spokesman Lucio Guerrero described the governor's mood as "upbeat" and "positive" and said "there's a sense of trying to return to normalcy." He said he knew of no decision about Blagojevich's political future or what the governor might do with Obama's seat.

His refusal to step down has struck some as odd given that wiretaps portrayed him as bored with his job, saying he was "struggling financially" and did "not want to be governor for the next two years."

But staying in office provides a financial benefit amid the turmoil: He continues to draw a $177,000-a-year salary. Some observers also wondered whether he might be seeking a deal with prosecutors to use the governor's office as a bargaining chip, possibly agreeing to step down in exchange for leniency.

There was also worry that the governor might still pick a senator, although it doesn't appear that anyone would accept his nomination.

The decision to launch impeachment proceedings largely rests with House Speaker Michael Madigan, who faces a strong desire among his members for quick action. They said voters are demanding it, and lawmakers are transmitting that message to Madigan.

Four House Democrats sent a letter to their colleagues Thursday seeking support for a motion to impeach Blagojevich. The letter asks members to indicate whether they oppose the idea or support it, or even whether they want to co-sponsor the motion.

Madigan, a Chicago Democrat who has often clashed with Blagojevich, said he will meet Monday with House Republican Leader Tom Cross to discuss impeachment. Cross said when they talk, he will urge Madigan to act immediately.

"I think you start next week. Why wait?" Cross said. The governor's "ability to lead is gone and its irreparable."

Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan, the daughter of the House speaker, threatened again to file a lawsuit asking the state Supreme Court to have Blagojevich declared unfit to hold office if he doesn't resign soon or get impeached.

"Obviously right now, in the best of all possible worlds, the governor would do what's right for the people of the state of Illinois. He would resign," said Madigan, a longtime Blagojevich foe considering a run for governor in 2010.

But "at this point he appears to be staying put," and Madigan wants a signal from lawmakers about whether they will move quickly on impeachment proceedings.

Quinn said the impeachment process should begin when the Legislature convenes. If lawmakers don't take action, he would support Madigan going to the Supreme Court.

Legislative leaders planned a special session Monday to strip Blagojevich of his power to pick a new U.S. senator, putting the decision in the hands of Illinois voters instead.

Many times when working on a computer that has been infected with a virus, trojan, or piece of spyware I find myself with my most important command, Regedit, the Windows Registry Editor being disabled. Virus creators like to disable the Registry Editor so it makes solving the problem and removing the issue difficult.Sometimes administrators in IT departments may place restrictions on using the regedit command to keep employees from changes things on company computers, but viruses and other issues may also try to disable it.Listed below you will find the different ways to enable regedit, the Registry Editor.

A Virtual Wallet for the Real World

Oxigen Services India, a Delhi-based solution provider, has facilitated this collaboration through OxiCash- its Virtual Mobile Wallet (VMW).

The prepaid-stored VMW helps customers pay their shopping bills through mobile phones. It can be used via the web, SMS, GPRS-enabled mobile phones, WAP, and other interfaces.

According to Pramod Saxena, chairman and managing director of Oxigen mobiles an inseparable accessory, and are a natural replacement of cash / wallets among people. "In the VMWs, easy and low cost data connectivity will enable safe and quick transactions including money transfer."

He said that the mobile number is used to create a virtual wallet, and also acts as the wallet ID. It is protected with a 4-digit security password.

To enable transactions, the user has to deposit cash at any of the Oxigen 45,000 outlets or can use credit / debit cards for an online transfer through the 'oxicash.in' portal.

According to Saxena, the central OxiCash server (developed by an in-house IT team) along with SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) ensures safety through encrypted transactions. The operating system is on Microsoft Windows and the transactions are processed on a Microsoft SQL server.

Each SMS transaction on OxiCash is password protected. The company is also adding a 3-tier, two factor authentication-based security structure on SMS.

Oxigen avails the services of telecom service providers such as MTNL, BSNL, Vodafone, Airtel, etc. For OxiCash, it has tie-ups with retailers like INDMall, Asia Home Store, Game Stations, Bangalore Shoppe, etc.

Veteran Communist leader Harkishan Singh Surjeet died on Friday following a prolonged illness. He was 93. Flags at all party offices would fly at half-mast, Harkishan's Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) said in a statement. Born in Punjab, Surjeet was the general secretary of the CPI-M from 1992 to 2005. He was a member of the CPI-M from 1964.
Despite his Communist background, Surjeet was a consummate player of the democratic political game and was instrumental in the formation of three coalition governments at the Centre.

LONDON: With his electoral prospects fading by the day, Senator John McCain has fallen out with his vice-presidential running mate about the direc

tion of his White House campaign.

McCain has become alarmed about the fury unleashed by Sarah Palin, the moose-hunting "pitbull in lipstick", against Senator Barack Obama. Cries of "terrorist" and "kill him" have accompanied the tirades by the governor of Alaska against the Democratic nominee at Republican rallies.

Mark Salter, McCain's long-serving chief of staff, is understood to have told campaign insiders that he would prefer his boss, a former Vietnam prisoner of war, to suffer an "honourable defeat" rather than conduct a campaign that would be out of character — and likely to lose him the election.

Palin, 44, has led the character attacks on Obama in the belief that McCain may be throwing away the election and her chance of becoming vice-president. Her supporters think that if the Republican ticket loses on November 4, she should run for president in 2012. A leading Republican consultant said: "A lot of conservatives are grumbling about what a poor job McCain is doing. They are rolling their eyes and saying, "Yes, a miracle could happen, but at this rate it is all over."

"Sarah Palin is no fool. She sees the same thing and wants to salvage what she can. She is positioning herself for the future. Her best days could be in front of her. She wants to look as though she was the fighter, the person with the spunk who was out there taking it to the Democrats."

McCain, 72, has encouraged voters to contrast his character with Obama's.

The campaign launched a tough television commercial last week questioning, "Who is Barack Obama?"Frank Keating,
McCain's campaign co-chairman, last week called the Democrat a "guy off the street" and said he should admit that he had "used cocaine".

McCain believes the attacks have spun out of control. At a rally in Lakeville, Minnesota, the Arizona senator became visibly angry when he was booed for calling Obama "a decent person". He took the microphone from an elderly woman who said she disliked Obama because he was "Arab", saying, "No ma'am, no ma'am." When another questioner demanded that he tell the truth about Obama, he said: "I want everybody to be respectful and let's be sure we are."

However, his campaign has stepped up its negative advertising against Obama, accusing him of lying about his relationship with William Ayers, the leader of the Weather Underground group responsible for bombing the Capitol and the Pentagon in the early 1970s, who is now a Chicago professor.

Palin has continued to lead the charge against Obama's alleged lack of candour. At a rally in Wilmington, Ohio, she mocked him for attending a supporters' meeting in Ayers's home when he was seeking to become an Illinois state senator in 1995.

"He didn't know he launched his career in the living room of a domestic terrorist until he did know," Palin said. "Some will say, jeez Sarah, it's getting negative. No it's not negativity. It's truthfulness." The crowd bellowed its appreciation with chants of "Nobama" and "Go Sarah Go!"

John Weaver, a former senior McCain adviser who left the campaign when it almost imploded in the summer of last year, questioned the purpose of the attacks.

"People need to understand, for moral reasons and the protection of our civil society, that the differences with Senator Obama are ideological, based on clear differences on policy and a lack of experience compared with Senator McCain," he said. "And from a purely practical political vantage point, please find me a swing voter, an undecided independent, or a torn female voter that finds an angry mob mentality attractive."

A McCain official confirmed that there was dissension in the campaign. "There is always going to be a debate about the costs and benefits of any strategy," he said. "After November 4, the feelings of individuals will come to light. It is only natural and will be expected." Palin's frustration with McCain has led to clashes over strategy.

When she learnt he was pulling resources from Michigan, an industrial swing state leaning heavily in Obama's favour, she fired off an e-mail sayi

ng, "Oh come on, do we have to?" and offered to travel there with her husband Todd, four-times winner of the 2,000-mile Iron Dog snowmobile race.

She also told Bill Kristol, the conservative New York Times columnist, that she wished the campaign would make more of Obama's 20-year association with the Rev Jeremiah Wright, his controversial former pastor, who said, "God damn America".

"To me, that does say something about character," Palin said. "But you know, I guess that would be a John McCain call on whether he wants to bring it up."

McCain's allies responded by suggesting that she had her own pastor problems, such as the African minister who prayed to Jesus to protect her from witchcraft when she was running for governor.

In October 2003, China became the third country to put a man in space with its own rocket, after the former Soviet Union and the United States. It sent two more astronauts on a five-day flight on its Shenzhou VI craft in October 2005.

"We will check the weather conditions to decide whether to launch as planned," Huang Chunping, rocket systems consultant for the Chinese Manned Space Program, was quoted as saying by the Oriental Morning Post.

"The space walk will take place after the craft has made five orbits," he added.

Previous reports in Chinese state media had said the launch would be between September 25 and 30.

Last year, China sent into orbit its first lunar probe and its longer term goals include establishing a space station and landing on the moon.

China's space program has come a long way since late leader Mao Zedong, founder of Communist China in 1949, lamented that the country could not even launch a potato into space.

One killed, 12 injured in Kashmir protests

One person was killed and twelve others injured on Friday afternoon when security forces fired at a mob in south Kashmir's Shopian town, the police said.

Indefinite curfew was imposed in the town, 56 km from in Srinagar.

The police in Srinagar said a group of people turned violent when they came out of the local mosque after offering Friday prayers.

"One person has died in this incident and twelve others are wounded. Seven of the injured persons have been taken to Srinagar hospitals for specialized treatment," a police officer said in Srinagar.

The joint co-ordination committee of both the separatist Hurriyat groups had asked the people to hold peaceful protests across the Valley after the Friday prayers.

Reports reaching in Srinagar from Shopian said the situation there was extremely tense and the authorities were having a tough time enforcing the curfew restrictions in the town.

The mob also ransacked and partially torched the office of the district magistrate in Shopian town.

Government fears terrorists will use such fake mobiles and hence pose a security threat. Government is working to eliminate this by asking the regulators to ban these devices or they may be stopped at entry into India.

The International Mobile Equipment Identity or IMEI (pronounced /aɪˈmiː/) is a number unique to every GSM and UMTS and iDEN mobile phone as well as some satellite phones. It is usually found printed on the phone underneath the battery.

The IMEI number is used by the GSM network to identify valid devices and therefore can be used to stop a stolen phone from accessing the network. For example, if a mobile phone is stolen, the owner can call his or her network provider and instruct them to "ban" the phone using its IMEI number. This renders the phone useless, regardless of whether the phone's SIM is changed.

Unlike the Electronic Serial Number or MEID of CDMA and other wireless networks, the IMEI is only used to identify the device, and has no permanent or semi-permanent relation to the subscriber. Instead, the subscriber is identified by transmission of an IMSI number, which is stored on a SIM card which can (in theory) be transferred to any handset. However, many network and security features are enabled by knowing the current device being used by a subscriber.

The IMEI (14 digits plus check digit) or IMEISV (16 digits) includes information on the origin, model, and serial number of the device. The structure of the IMEI/SV are specified in 3GPP TS 23.003. The model and origin comprise the initial 8-digit portion of the IMEI/SV, known as the Type Allocation Code (TAC). The remainder of the IMEI is manufacturer-defined, with a Luhn check digit at the end (which is never transmitted).

As of 2004, the format of the IMEI is AA-BBBBBB-CCCCCC-D, although it may not always be displayed this way. The IMEISV drops the Luhn check digit in favour of an additional 2 digits for the Software Version Number (SVN) in the format AA-BBBBBB-CCCCCC-EE

Prior to 2002, the TAC was 6 digits long and followed by a two-digit Final Assembly Code (FAC), which was a manufacturer-specific code indicating the location of the device's construction.

For example the IMEI code 35-209900-176148-1 or IMEISV code 35-209900-176148-23 tells us the following:

TAC: 352099 so it was issued by the BABT and has the allocation number 2099
FAC: 00 so it was numbered during the transition phase from the old format to the new format (described below)
SNR: 176148 - uniquely identifying a unit of this model
CD: 1 so it is a GSM Phase 2 or higher
SVN: 23 - The 'software version number' identifying the revision of the software installed on the phone. 99 is reserved.

The format changed from April 1, 2004 when the Final Assembly Code ceased to exist and the Type Approval Code increases to eight digits in length and became known as the Type Allocation Code. From January 1, 2003 until this time the FAC for all phones was 00.

The Reporting Body Identifier is allocated by the Global Decimal Administrator; the first two digits must be decimal (ie less than 0xA0) for it to be an IMEI and not an MEID.

The new CDMA Mobile Equipment Identifier (MEID) uses the same basic format as the IMEI.

[edit]Retrieving IMEI information from a GSM device

On many devices the IMEI number can be retrieved by entering *#06#. The IMEI number of a GSM device can be retrieved by sending the command AT+CGSN. For more information refer the 3GPP TS 27.007, Section 5.4 /2/ standards document.

Retrieving IMEI Information from an older Sony or Sony Ericsson handset can be done by entering these keys: Right * Left Left * Left * (Other service menu items will be presented with this key combination).

The IMEI information can be retrieved from most older Nokia mobile phones by pressing *#92702689# (*#WAR0ANTY#), this opens the warranty menu in which the first item is the serial number (the IMEI). The warranty menu also shows other information such as the date the phone was made and the life timer of the phone.

The IMEI can frequently be displayed through phone menus, under a section titled 'System Information', 'Device', 'Phone Info' or similar. Many phones also have the IMEI listed on a label in the battery compartment.

The IMEI will display on the device page of iTunes for an iPhone after syncing.

On refurbished phones the IMEI may be different for the software and the actual phone itself. You can check this by looking behind the phone where the battery is placed (phone IMEI) and by pressing *#06# on your phone (software IMEI). This is because refurbished phones are often fitted with a housing from another phone.

The BGAN, Iridium and Thuraya satellite phone networks all use IMEI numbers on their transceiver units as well as SIM cards in much the same way as GSM phones do. The Iridium 9601 modem relies solely on its IMEI number for identification and uses no SIM card however Iridium is a proprietary network and the device is incompatible with regular GSM networks.

Many countries have acknowledged the use of the IMEI in reducing the effect of mobile phone theft. For example, in the United Kingdom under the Mobile Telephones (Re-programming) Act, changing the IMEI of a phone, or possessing equipment that can change it, is considered an offence under some circumstances.

There is a misunderstanding amongst some regulators that the existence of a formally allocated IMEI number range to a GSM terminal implies that the terminal is approved or complies with regulatory requirements. This is not the case. The linkage between regulatory approval and IMEI allocation was removed in April 2000 with the introduction of the European R&TTE Directive. Since that date, IMEIs have been allocated byBABT (acting on behalf of the GSM Association) to legitimate GSM terminal manufacturers without the need to provide evidence of approval.

Other countries use different approaches when dealing with phone theft. For example, mobile operators in Singapore are not required by the regulator to implement phone blocking or tracing systems, IMEI-based or other. The regulator has expressed its doubts on the real effectiveness of this kind of systems in the context of the mobile market in Singapore. Instead, mobile operators are encouraged to take measures such as the immediate suspension of service and the replacement of SIM cards in case of loss or theft.[1]

[edit]Blacklist of stolen devices

When mobile equipment is stolen or lost, the operator or owner will typically contact the Central Equipment Identity Register (CEIR) which blacklists the device in all operator switches so that it will in effect become unusable, making theft of mobile equipment a useless business.

The IMEI number is not supposed to be easy to change, making the CEIR blacklisting effective. However this is not always the case: IMEI may be easy to change with special tools and some operators may even flatly ignore the CEIR blacklist.

Facilities do not exist to unblock numbers listed in error on all networks. This is possible in the UK, however, where the user who initially blocked the IMEI must quote a password chosen at the time the block was applied.

The last number of the IMEI is a check digit calculated using the Luhn algorithm.

According to the IMEI Allocation and Approval Guidelines,

The Check Digit is calculated according to Luhn formula (ISO/IEC 7812). See GSM 02.16 / 3GPP 22.016. The Check Digit shall not be transmitted to the network. The Check Digit is a function of all other digits in the IMEI. The Software Version Number (SVN) of a mobile is not included in the calculation. The purpose of the Check Digit is to help guard against the possibility of incorrect entries to the CEIR and EIR equipment. The presentation of Check Digit (CD) both electronically and in printed form on the label and packaging is very important. Logistics (using bar-code reader) and EIR/CEIR administration cannot use the CD unless it is printed outside of the packaging, and on the ME IMEI/Type Accreditation label. The check digit shall always be transmitted to the network as "0".

The check digit is validated in three steps:

Starting from the right, double a digit every 2 digits (e.g. 7 → 14)
Sum the digits (e.g. 14 → 1 + 4)
Check if the sum is divisible by 10

Conversely, one can calculate the IMEI by choosing the check digit which would give a sum divisible by 10. For the example IMEI 49015420323751?,

IMD has no signs of Mild quake tremors in Bangalore : September 12

Bangalore, Sept. 12 (MRS& KMS)- People ran out of their houses here this morning in panic as they experienced mild tremors. It soon became talk of the town as the people started sharing their experiences with their friends and relatives in other localities.

Residents of H.S.R. Layout, Kengeri, J.P. Nagar and Nagarabhavi, HMT Colony, Vijayanagar, KHB Colony, Sunkadakatte, White Field and Utharahalli said that they felt the tremors for about 30 seconds from 8.46 am.

Many housewives said that utensils tumbled in kitchen and window panes rattled causing panic.

Many Bangaloreans told mediapersons that they heard explosion-like sound before the tremors.

"I felt like a speeding heavy vehicle passing through the road opposite our house," a housewife said.

Manjula, a housewife of H.M.T. Layout, said that she came out running when she heard a loud thud and she felt as if some one was pushing the door.

There are, however, more versions about the incident. Some say that the sound could be the result of explosion being carried out for some construction activity.

This is not a new experience for Bangaloreans. They had experienced tremors when there was a devastating earthquake in Khillavi in Maharashtra about a decade ago.

An official of Mines and Geology Department said that he too was receiving numerous calls.

"We are in touch with the Seismology Centre in Gowribidanur where experts will analyse and estimate the magnitude of the tremor," he added.

P.S. Prakash of National Natural Disaster Control Cell said that he had passed on the information to Delhi and was awaiting a reply.

Rainfall Scenario

The axis of the monsoon trough at mean sea level ran close to the foothills of the Himalayas during the week. Under its influence, Widespread/fairly widespread rainfall with active/ vigorous monsoon conditions occurred over Arunachal Pradesh, Assam & Meghalaya and Sub-Himalayan West Bengal & Sikkim during the week and over Bihar, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram & Tripura during the first half of the week.

Widespread/fairly widespread rainfall occurred over Kerala and Lakshadweep during the week and over Interior Karnataka, Madhya Maharashtra, Marathawada, Coastal Karnataka during second half of the week in association with lower level cyclonic circulation. Tamil Nadu and Rayalaseema also got good rainfall activity during the week.

Subdued rainfall activity occurred over remaining parts of the country, especially central & northwestern parts of the country experienced deficient/ scanty rainfall during the week.

Out of 36 meteorological sub-divisions, number of sub-divisions with deficient rainfall is only 7 (Table-2). Compared to last week, the rainfall over North Interior Karnataka has improved and is now within the normal range with departure from normal as -17%. The rainfall over West Madhya Pradesh, Saurashtra & Kutch, Coastal Karnataka and Vidarbha has slightly deteriorated and now lies in the deficient category. Marathawada, Kerala and Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram & Tripura continue to be deficient.

Man gets two yrs in jail for reneging on promise of marriage

MUMBAI: A sessions court on Wednesday sentenced a man to two years in jail on charges of cheating. He had established physical relations with a 31-year-old woman after promising to marry her, but had later gone back on his word.

The initial complaint was filed under section 376 of the IPC for rape, but the charge did not hold as it could not be proven that the man had non-consensual sex with the woman.

The complainant, who lived with her family, was unmarried because she had to look after her unemployed brother's children.

According to the police, the woman would get up early morning every day to get the children ready for school. At that time she would also meet her neighbour, Joshimuddin Mojumullah.

Over a period of time, Mojumullah grew close to her. According to her complaint, he promised to marry her in January 2006. The duo then developed sexual relations. In September 2006, the woman went to a hospital in Dadar and was told that she was seven months pregnant.

The woman's brother then asked Mojumullah to marry her but he refused. The family filed a complaint of rape and cheating against Mojumullah at the RCF police station and Mojumullah was arrested. During the trial at the sessions court, public prosecutor Usha Makasare examined six witnesses.

Mojumullah was convicted on charges of cheating under section 417 of the IPC. However, he has already spent that time in custody at Arthur Road jail. The judge also fined Mojumullah Rs 20,000, which he agreed to pay.

Girl returns home, says she had eloped

PATNA: The case of kidnapping of a girl, Pratibha Anand, lodged with the Digha police station on August 7, 2008, by her father, Amrendra Kumar Singh, resident of Jay Prakash Nagar of Digha, turned out to be false one.

Confirming this, senior SP Amit Kumar said Anand had in fact eloped with a boy, Prasunna Rai, a resident of Saidpur locality under the Kadamkuan police station, and married him at the registrar office and stayed in a rented house in S K Puri.

However, when Anand did not return home, her father informed the police that his daughter had been kidnapped.

Police investigated the case, but without much success. After two days of her ‘kidnapping' Anand surfaced at her father's house on August 9, 2008. Police immediately interrogated her, but she kept dodging the police.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. Interior Department employees who oversaw oil drilling on federal lands had sex and used illegal drugs with workers at energy companies where they were conducting official business, an internal government report said on Wednesday.

Employees at the department's Minerals Management Service "socialized with, and received a wide array of gifts and gratuities from, oil and gas companies," according to the department's inspector general, Earl Devaney.

"When confronted by our investigators, none of the employees involved displayed remorse," Devaney said.

The alleged activities occurred between 2002 and 2006 and involved 19 former and current workers at the Minerals Management Service's offices in Denver and Washington. Devaney recommended that those still on the job be fired.

The workers were involved in the "royalty-in-kind" program that collects and sells oil and gas turned over by energy companies as royalties for drilling on federal lands. About $4 billion a year in royalty-in-kind oil and gas is collected and sold by the department.

E ight working mothers from the Virginia Run development in Centreville went together to the Palin-McCain rally yesterday because Sarah Palin is "just like us." This is something new. Nobody ever accused Franklin Roosevelt orRonald Reagan of being just like us.

"She justifies what we do every day," said Beth Tweddle, who works in sales and carried a sign she drew herself, saying "We [heart] Pit Bull Palin." Tweddle was already a McCain supporter, she said, "but Sarah just energizes us and got us out here because she does what we do, she lives like we do."

We don't live in an age of looking up to authority anymore. We don't cotton to the idea that there are people who are our betters. In this time of "American Idol," bedroom bloggers and the belief that experience, knowledge and education don't necessarily mean a whole lot, Palin is a symbol, a statement that anyone can make it if he or she really tries.

Karla Rupp, a real estate agent, went to see Palin on behalf of her three children, especially the one who has multiple disabilities and is in a nursing home. Val Lewis couldn't stay away -- "that's how empowering it is to have Sarah up there. I have four children; she has five. And we get it done."

The crowd, which I counted at 8,000 but which police estimated at 23,000, gathered at Van Dyck Park in Fairfax City represented votes for John McCain but passion for Palin. McCain knew it; he led the audience in a chant of "Sar-ah! Sar-ah!" Still, did the man who might be the next president know that hundreds would start streaming out of the park as soon as Palin finished speaking, leaving a noticeably sparser audience to hear from the top of the ticket?

Just a couple of weeks ago, the Republicans wielded "celebrity" as an insult. No more. They have seen Barack Obama's electric effect on audiences, and they have trumped him, at least in a way. Obama may still draw larger crowds and inspire followers with a message of hope and change. But the governor of Alaska is winning people over with empathy, which the dictionary says means "understanding and entering into another's feelings," and with something even more direct: a sense that her experience is that of the average American family's.

"She's just as flawed as we are," Tweddle said. "It's not the fact that she's a woman but the way she does it all. And let me tell you: There're more American parents with unwed pregnant teenaged children than American parents with Harvard grads. She's real."

For hours, I walked through the crowd talking to people, mostly women. Again and again, I heard variations on this idea: "She's more like us than Obama, McCain or any of the others," as Rupp put it. "She knows what we go through."

Think of whomever you consider the greatest presidents, and odds are, they were about as far as you can get from being like the rest of us. They tend to have come from wealth, power, fame, the pinnacle of our education system or all of the above. FDR could speak to the pain Americans felt in the Depression, and no one especially cared that he had never personally felt such strain. Reagan could inspire Americans to believe that the nation had a higher purpose, and his celebrity and Hollywood roots only made him that much more admired.

Palin is connecting because, like a reality TV show's most sympathetic contestant, she puts front and center the inexperience, imperfection and pain that most professional politicians work so hard to hide. McCain can't quite tell the story of the pain and sacrifice he experienced as a prisoner of war? No problem. Palin will express the emotions that he can't. That's what mothers do.

"Being a mom is tough, and being a mom and working is really tough," said Carol Buro, who could spare only an hour before she had to pick up her daughter from kindergarten in Vienna. She went to the rally anyway, because she just had to see Palin. "I was going to vote for McCain, but I wasn't very excited. I felt he was a little too political -- saying things because that's what people want to hear. Now I'm just so proud of Sarah. You know, we've all been through a lot. And she's seen some tough times, and she's stood up for what she believes in."

Most people I spoke to readily conceded that Palin lacks experience with or knowledge of many important national and foreign issues. But, as Allison McGarvey, a teacher who lives in Stafford County, said, Palin is "a courageous woman, and what she doesn't know, she can learn quickly. Let's face it, no president knows all the issues. Anyway, I don't see how a candidate can pick one stand and just stick to it. The world situation changes every day. It's their moral and ethical background that's important."

In this hyperdemocratized society, the national conviction that anyone can succeed is morphing into a belief that experience and knowledge may almost be disqualifying credentials.

Like many at the rally, Victoria Robinson-Worst sees Palin's lack of experience as an asset. "I know people who have experience who are totally incompetent," said Robinson-Worst, who lives in Loudoun County, designs wedding flowers and raises two children. "And I know people who have no experience who step in and get it right. I mean, women can do amazing things."

This is where culture wars, identity politics and self-suffocating academic theories of deconstructionism have led us: Authority is suspect. Experience is corrupting. Ignorance is strength?

Next will be "war is peace." Or have we already heard that one?

Sonia plays Gender appeasement card again

The United Progressive Alliance chairperson Sonia Gandhi on Thursday launched an interesting scheme of the Andhra Pradesh government to make 1 crore (10 million) women in the state a millionaire in next five years.

Under this Indira Kranthi Pratham Scheme the women's self-help groups will be provided loans of Rs 1 lakh crore (Rs 1 trillion) at the interest rate of 3 per cent per annum through linkages with various banks. The state government has set the target of 2013-14 to achieve the goal.

Addressing a mammoth gathering of more than 200,000 women members of SHGs at Renigunta near Tirupati on Thursday, Sonia Gandhi hailed the movement of women empowerment in Andhra Pradesh as a model not only for India, but also for the world.

Sonia Gandhi, who was impressed by the success stories generated by the Pavala Vaddi (3 per cent per annum interest) scheme for the SHGs, said: "You are an example of effectiveness of the groups in Andhra Pradesh. You have evinced a great deal of interest not only in our country, but also abroad. Whenever visitors from abroad come or when I go aboard and meet with leaders, they invariably ask me how they can duplicate the programs of self-help groups in Andhra Pradesh," she said.

On the occasion Sonia Gandhi presented a cheque of Rs 50 crore (Rs 500 million) to the Life Insurance Corporation and United India Insurance to bring 4.2 million women members of SHGs under the credit insurance scheme.

The UPA chairperson also handed over cheques of Rs 128 crore (Rs 1.28 billion) from different banks, including Sapthgiri Grameena Bank, State Bank of India [Get Quote], Indian Bank [Get Quote] and Andhra Bank [Get Quote], as loan linkage to the SHGs of Chittoor district.

She expressed happiness that in drought-prone district like Chittoor, women had taken to cooperative milk production in a big way and running several bulk milk cooling centers.

Lauding the initiative of low interest rate loans for women by the YS Rajasekhara Reddy government in the state, she said, "Apart from causing business activities, it has generated employment for more than 100,000 unemployed young men and women. It has create a very positive environment."

Speaking on the occasion, Andhra Chief Minister Rajasekhara Reddy said that banks were now vying with each other to extend loans to the women's groups in the state because of the incredible recovery rate of 99 per cent.

"Almost 90 lakh (9 million) members of 730,000 groups all over the state are utilizing the loans for various mercantile activities and small business like dairy farming, running bulk milk cooling centers," he said.

Criticizing the previous Telugu Desam Party government in the state for providing only Rs 700 crore (Rs 7 billion) to the SHGs at the high rate of 12 per cent per annum, Reddy said that his government was providing Rs 11,000 crore (Rs 110 billion) finance this year alone. "During last four years we have already provided a finance of Rs 13,200 crore (Rs 132 billion)," he said.

Earlier Sonia Gandhi participated in an interaction with select mandal-level leaders of SHGs where women narrated their success stories under various schemes including the national rural employment guarantee scheme.

One of them, Sridevi, said that low interest scheme had changed her life as her group had got a loan of Rs 4.5 lakh (Rs 450,000) and she was in to milk production earning Rs 3,000 per month.

Officials said that the dairies run by SHGs were producing 210,000 litres of milk per day in the district and the price at which the groups were selling milk had also gone up from Rs 6 to Rs 12 per litre.

Amravati, another lady said she had earned Rs 12,000 by working under the NREGP and has now purchased a bullock cart for business.

Sonia Gandhi is on a day-long visit of three districts of Chittoor, Kadapa and Anantapur in Rayala Seema region. The visit is being seen as a move to gear up the ruling Congress party for the coming elections and to prepare it to face the two-pronged challenge from the Telugu Desam and Praja Rajyam party of film star Chiranjeevi.

SAVE INDIAN Family Foundation, strongly and severely condemns the derogatory ad being telecast at the behest of Kitply Industries. The ad shows a young timid man getting married to a woman and on the first night, the bed crumbles. The wife asks the husband, "Kitply nahi laye kya?" (Have you not bought Kitply?) and slaps the husband.

Openly, brazenly and cold – bloodedly this ad not only depicts domestic violence on men, but also promulgates it, inspiring women to do it and telling men that this is a way of life. World over, international studies have proved it beyond doubt that domestic violence is not a gender specific issue and is a matter of equal concern for both men and women.

The situation is far worse in India, wherein gender biased, lopsided, avaricious, pernicious, draconian, anachronistic and unconstitutional anti–male marital laws fail to recognise the presence of domestic violence and acknowledge the same for men. Yes, domestic violence laws in India do not consider the fact that men too could be victims, the way women are presumed and prejudiced to be and the domestic violence law in India does not allow men to make complaints of domestic violence in India.

This despite the fact that as per government records ie suicide date published by National Crime Records Bureau, every year 56,000 married men are committing suicide, which is considered as a social service in a great country like India, where 82 per cent of taxes are paid by men. Neither do men have a Men’s Welfare Ministry for them nor a National Commission for Men to look into their grievances, whereas animals do. The condition of Indian men is worse than animals in India.

To add to the woes, men are subject to the constant fear of being dragged into false cases of dowry harassment and domestic violence draining them financially, socially, morally and spiritually in addition to being victims of domestic violence as well at the hands of their vindictive and vicious wives and in–laws who do not forget to file false cases of dowry harassment on innocent men and their families and drag them to the police station and court and unleash legal terrorism on them and extort money legally from them.

As if all this was no less, when corporates like Kitply Industries rain on men and promote domestic violence on men as a norm and when confronted for the same, shamelessly claim that it has been shown in a humorous mood and shrug away from accountability. The contention that the ad was shown in a light spirit is subject to critical analysis and not becoming of a brand name Kitply Industries.

Save Indian Family Foundation, the single largest umbrella non-government organisation (NGO) for about 15 different NGOs fighting not only for men’s rights but also for gender equality and family harmony, severely condemns such derogatory ads and demands apology from Kitply Industries, failing which Save Indian Family Foundation will be forced to issue legal notices to them to respond properly.

One can only imagine the kind of furore that would have been generated if they had shown a man slapping a woman in similar manner.So when activists championing the cause of equality for women are crying foul, why are they now silent when gender equality is critically endangered and its existence seriously jeopardised by such derogatory ad content. This only depicts the hollow goals, with which such activists work and want to rake in the mullah in the name of women’s empowerment and feminism, but do not believe in actual equality based on truth and justice.

Save Indian Family Foundation reiterates its demand of an apology from Kitply Industries and once again puts this question to the civil society and the government that how long would they continue to consider men as second class citizens in their own country?

Indian girl kills self over "Big Bang" fear: family

BHOPAL, India (Reuters) - A teenage girl in central India killed herself on Wednesday after being traumatized by media reports that a "Big Bang" experiment in Europe could bring about the end of the world, her father said.

The 16-year old girl from the state of Madhya Pradesh drank pesticide and was rushed to the hospital but later died, police said.

Her father, identified on local television as Biharilal, said that his daughter, Chayya, killed herself after watching doomsday predictions made on Indian news programs.

"In the past two days, Chayya had asked me and other relatives about the world coming to an end on September 10," Biharilal was quoted as saying.

"We tried to divert her attention and told her she should not worry about such things, but to no avail," he said.

For the past two days, many Indian news channels held discussions airing doomsday predictions over a huge particle-smashing machine buried under the Swiss-French border.

The machine, called the Large Hadron Collider, was switched on on Wednesday, at the start of what experts say is the largest scientific experiment in human history.

The machine smashes particles together to achieve, on a small-scale, re-enactments of the "Big Bang" that created the universe.

Leading scientists and researchers at the European Organization for Nuclear Research, said the experiment was safe. They dismissed as "pure fiction" doomsday predictions that the experiment could create anti-matter, or black holes.

But in deeply religious and superstitious India, fears about the experiment and the minor risks associated with it spread rapidly through the media.

In east India, thousands of people rushed to temples to pray and fast while others savored their favorite foods in anticipation of the world's end.

"There were a thousand more devotees yesterday as well as today compared to (any) other normal day," Benudhara Sahu, a temple official in Orissa state, told Reuters.

Many women and children rushed to temples and observed fasts as they prayed for deliverance, officials and witnesses said.

Assurances by scientists and the media that nothing would happen counted for nothing for housewife Rukmini Moharana.

"I visited temple, prayed to god," Moharana said. "I am observing the fast for safety because god can only save us."

Mothers-in-law complain that the country’s heavily skewed legislations help filing of false cases against them

NEW DELHI: On the eve of Women’s Equality Day, women are pitted against women in India, demanding equal rights. Tired of facing false dowry and domestic violence charges, harassed mothers-in-law and sisters-in-law are now up in arms against government organisations for being heavily biased in favour of daughters-in-law.

Women NGOs representing the harassed mothers-in-law and sisters-in law have accused the National Commission for Women (NCW) and ministry of women and child development for not listening to their grievances and quoting wrong statistics to push through biased laws.

Two NGOs — Mothers And Sisters Initiative (MASI) and All India Forgotten Women — used the Right To Information (RTI) Act to establish their point. The move came against the backdrop of a statement made by NCW chairperson Girija Vyas who had said that in 70% of divorce cases, adultery is used to discredit the women and deny them maintenance rights. Vyas had made the statement while pursuing an amendment in Section 125 of CrPc which deals which maintenance for women. However, when the NGOs sought copy of records on the basis of which Vyas made such a statement through an RTI application, the NCW replied it had “no record which shows in 70% of maintenance cases under CrPc 125, adultery has been alleged and proved misused” by husbands.

Crying foul, these groups have sought the prime minister’s intervention, demanding gender-neutral laws and amendments through which misuse of dowry prohibition and domestic violence laws could be prevented.

“Politicians like women and child development minister Renuka Chowdhury and Girija Vyas are using such sensitive issues to fuel their political agenda. They make irresponsible statements which cannot be substantiated by any proof,” said Dr Anupama Singh of MASI.

However, Vyas defended herself saying: “It is true that NCW does not have such statistics but I said it on the basis of what we hear from police and courts. However, I am getting a research conducted on this issue.”

“Every five minutes, one innocent person is arrested in a false case, sans any inquiry. So many women are pushed behind bars as their disgruntled daughters in-law misused the law to settle scores,” said Preeti Chauhan of All India Forgotten Women

AHMEDABAD: A physically-challenged woman Swati Gupta, who stays in Navrangpura has registered a complaint of dowry harassment against her husband and father-in law.

According to Swati's complaint, she had met her husband Vipin through the internet. Vipin too suffers from physical disability. The couple fell in love, met and decided to marry with consent of both their respective families.

That was three years back. But, the lovemarriage soon turned sour. Swati, who hails from Uttar Pradesh, claims that Vipin used to often harass her for dowry. She has claimed in her complaint that he used to abuse and beat her too.

According to her complaint, three months back Swati was driven out of home by her husband, over an unfulfilled dowry demand. The girl went to UP and was later brought back to Ahmedabad by her father Viren Saxena.

Saxena had tried to reason with Vipin but to no avail. Swati alleged that Vipin had beatedn her up in the presence of the maid who did household chores.

However, the couple resumed staying together and the pressure on Swati mounted. A month earlier, Swati had tried to commit suicide by consuming poison. The maid spotted this and rushed her to a hospital on time.

On Wednesday morning, according to Swati's police statement, Vipin again beat her up. After this Swati approached the Navrangpura police and registered a complaint of dowry against her husband and father-in-law.
