So, here’s my garlic drying off in my shed (the shed smells lovely!). Planted in late December and early Jan it’s all done pretty well, perhaps the least successful but I was aware that it can be harder to grow than other types, Solent Wight and Purple Wight seem to have produced the best.

Once they’re dry I then need to learn how to tie the garlic in strings, that should be fun!

Our plot is the third one in, it’s the one with the black bin nearset the left of the picture with the massive patch of onions, shallots and garlic to the right.

I’ve just harvested the first lot of garlic; Solent Wight & Purple Wight have done great. The Elephant wasn’t as good but the last 5 weeks of rain didn’t help, they’re about the size of tennis balls which isn’t so bad. I’m planning to keep one plant to grow with next year. Anyway the rest of the garlic is hanging up drying off in the comfort of my shed for a couple of weeks before we have to tying it together for winter storage.

So here’s the plot (not the best picture I know - it was taken with my mobile phone). The main bed at the front shows a collection of bottles; no I’m not growing them, they make for great protection for my French beans against a pesky rabbit - and act as mini-greenhouses. Once they’re established I’ll cut the tops off so they can start climbing.

The upside down hanging basket is being used to protect a tomato plant, that I think I’ve planted out way to soon, but what the hell!

Then there’s some garlic to the left of that; I’m really pleased with how it’s grown, I chose 6 different types from the Garlic Farm to see which would do best, it would seem all six have excelled! So thanks to The Garlic Farm on the Isle of Wight.

This is for people:

4x sticks of rhubarb
1 tablespoon  of  honey
The juice of 1 orange

Cut the rhubarb into small chunks, drizzle over the honey and squeeze over the orange juice, give it a good mix and put it in the oven for 20 minutes at 200 degrees C.

To serve I went for natural yoghurt with a couple of broken ginger nut biscuits. Very yummy. For variation I tried cranberry juice isstead of OJ, and Greek yoghurt instead of natural yoghurt.
