This, I am sad to say, is my final post here on FFDO. The time has come to shutter the site. In the era of social media, websites such as this make less and less sense. The primary function of FFDO has been to serve as hub for the #FridayFlash community. However, just as with so many other websites, the activity level here has diminished to the point where the cost of maintaining the site (in terms of effort, not cost) is far greater than the benefits of keeping it open.

The hardest part on closing down FFDO is the loss of The Collector. That, at least, has remained active. The Collector, in its current state, will remain open this week, and there will be one last Friday Flash Report on Saturday, but the site will close to user interaction next week. I expect it will go completely dark before the end of the month.

I’ve put some thought into how to maintain a collector of sorts, so that we all still have someplace to go every week to list and find stories. For while FFDO may be shutting down, the Friday Flash Community most certainly is not.

We have members active on Twitter, Facebook, and Google Plus. While each of those are terrific social media sites, they all have their limitations on how things can be set up and run. We will be forced to work within the confines of their black boxes.

Those of you on Twitter can simply continue to post your stories there with the #FridayFlash hashtag. The same goes for those of you on Google Plus. But I encourage users of both to also join our Friday Flash Page on Facebook.

Why?

Our Facebook page will become the site of our new Collector. I am sorry if this disappoints some of you, but I had to pick someplace, a place where all the overhead is taken care of by someone else, and I am most comfortable on Facebook.

Here is how the new Collector will work.

Every Saturday I will place a sticky post on our Facebook page called The Collector. Each member is then welcome to share the same info they would have put into the FFDO Collector as a comment. I’ll seed the weekly post with the same data items you found in the old collector and you can simply cut and paste them into your comment and then add your individual details. Make sure you include that all important link. By the time Friday rolls around we should have a nice little collection of links to help everyone find their favorite authors.

There will be no FridayFlash Report. The weekly Collector post should serve double duty. Of course we will lose the alphabetical nature of the listing, but you may find new gems as you scroll through the comments.

Articles and interviews were also a big part of FFDO. We do not have to lose those just because we are moving operations to Facebook. If you would like to contribute an article simply notify me before posting it and I will make it sticky for a week.

Of course shutting down a website inevitably leads to broken links. Some of you may be using our I Write Friday Flash badge, with its embedded link to FFDO. You are certainly welcome to continue to use the graphic on your sites, but please go into it and edit out the link to avoid frustrating your readers.

Finally I would like to thank all the people who helped me establish and maintain FFDO, particularly those who stepped forward to do yeoman’s work while my wife, Cyndi, was ill. Tim, Angie, and Estrella, you made all the difference in the world to me and I will never forget it. They, along with the rest of past and present FFDO staff members are in my personal Hall of Fame.

I would liked to have included all the people who also contributed guest posts in the past but the list and history is too long for me to deal with. To all of you, thank you form the bottom of my heart.

Here’s to hoping we can keep this wonderful community vibrant and alive. I hope to see you all on Facebook starting next week.
