FRINGE 3.02 THE BOX

The story alternates to the Fringe Team ‘over here’ where they investigate a mystifying case that people are discovered in a trance-like state that ultimately leads to their death. The unlikely suspect: a mysterious box. As Peter and Walter collaborate to study its properties, alternate Olivia presses on and turns up the heat on an unsuspecting Peter. Meanwhile, key information about the future is revealed when Walter and Nina meet at Massive Dynamic for the reading of the last will and testament of William Bell.

Another promotional photo for the third season of Fringe has been released – this time we have cast group photo. Are there any suggestive hints to be gleaned?

It doesn’t seem to be as crammed with clues as the ‘World Turns‘ promo picture, but there are a few details that catch the eye:

This seems like our original Fringe team. No Altlivinating or Walternating going on here.

Hello Observer. I see your shadowy outline through the door to the otherside. But why is it so bright on your side?

The flooring is reflective of the individual characters and the wider alternate universe theme.

Peter is bowing down to queen Olivia. Tee-hee. He’s holding the butterfly glyph that spells “P” for Peter. Does this also suggest that his decisions will be of butterfly-effect importance in the new season?

The direction of the torch. It’s pointing at you. Dun-Dun-Dun!

Again, nothing crazy in this one, but what do you think? Does it tell you anything about the upcoming season?

Welcome to the rewatch for episode 15 of Fringe season 1 – “Inner Child”. Join us as we stop only looking, and start feeling our way to new perspectives and connections.

We have renamed this episode: Those Who Help Themselves.

Newly Observed Perspectives

The first shot of the little Observer crouching in the primal position against the wall reminded me a bit of young Olivia sat against the wall after she had zapped Brenner into oblivion (speculation). Not a connection as such, but an echo of what was soon to become an iconic visual, and perhaps provides more context into young Olive’s state of mind at the time.

This episode employed a few techniques to convey the idea that the Observerkid was a metaphor for Olivia’s subconscious – the close-up of her opening eye, the general ‘stillness’ of the episode and its music, references to the below/underground, and of course, the importance of ‘feeling’ over sight and sound. While also being a character in his own right, the little fella is a representation of Olivia’s inner child (hence the title), and the re-awakening of her powers that were buried for so many years. Whether this has deeper significance in terms of Olivia’s relationship with the Observers? I’d say that it had to be in the writers thinking.

We should also mention his scar – perhaps representative of Olivia’s mental bruising and the rigours of navigating her mind to communicate with John Scott. Not to mention the recent nearly-coming to terms with her Mind Powers in the previous episode. Perhaps they represent the opening of old wounds (literally, in terms of the case). Or, perhaps it illustrates the tear in the fabric between the two universes – something of tremendous importance to the Observers. And of course, we can’t forget that a scar was used as a clue for Peter’s origins.

Wow. Far too much R@chel-time in this episode.

“You enjoy music don’t you, Mr. Broyles?” Yes. Yes he does.

The Artist. Worst villain ever seen on Fringe. At least Molebaby had a quirky-charm and a name that matched up to its talent.

“He hasn’t relieved himself since he arrived.” Arrived, as in The Arrival, as in subtle confirmation (if it were needed) that he’s an Observer? Probably not intentional on the part of the writers, but that’s the internal mind for you.

The Observerkid intuits for Olivia, which builds on the idea that Olivia has the clues that she needs in her locker – she just needs to notice them:

“When I was a kid I used to live on these. Except the yellow, something about the color. Reminded me of medicine.”

The Observerkid (who is representative of her subconscious) merely points her in the right direction – as illustrated when he makes an arrow out of her discarded yellow M&Ms, enabling Olivia to later make the connection that was right in front of her eyes. So in many ways, Olivia helped herself:

“He heard you..or more accurately, felt you”

One final clue on the subconscious idea:

“If you really can feel what I’m thinking, you know how much I mean that.”

This ability to feel what someone is thinking is interesting, particularly in relation to our Transformation rewatch where we looked at Olivia’s exploration of John Scott’s subconscious and how her discoveries were based on what she found down there – or rather, what she felt down there. But those feelings needed to be translated – she couldn’t bring herself to rely on instinct alone. So it’s useful to see just how accurately the Observerkid can intuit people, particularly Olivia. If he is, as I suspect, a representation of her subconscious, this episode is essentially about Olivia giving herself further resolution, perhaps because recent events had stirred something within.

So what did Olivia actually achieve in this episode? Well, she solved an old case (always nice) and made contact with a part of herself, a part of her mind, that had been dormant for quite some time. Coming on the heels of “Ability” and what that entailed (the realization that she may have been experimented on as a child), you can see what this episode tried to achieve on an underlying level.

And isn’t the final scene with the Observerkid seeing September representative of Olivia’s conflict – she wants to go home and be with her family (which presumably includes lover boy Peter), but her slippery road is intersected by larger responsibilities and concerns. Happiness, for our dear Gate Keeper, may have to wait.

Who was the Little Child?

A really young (or really old) Observer – although time is relative – who also serves as Olivia’s rather bruised and intuitive inner child.

Who was Mr. Michaels?

In today’s Fringe Links, Anna Torv looks ahead to the new season of Fringe, John Noble is featured in the upcoming edition of Rolling Stone Magazine, and at last! We can all pretend that we work for Massive Dynamic.

Like that final chocolate that mysteriously appears in the box you thought was empty, more Fringe footage from Comic Con has turned up. This one features Anna Torv who looks ahead to the upcoming season of the show.

Of note in this interview is Torv’s willingness to defend and understand Altlivia:

“I wanna have a little bit more time with the alternate Olivia, because I sort of really haven’t had that much time to spend with her, so I’m not really quite sure who she is or where she’s at, but I like her. People keep asking, you know, like, ‘what’s happening to Bad Olivia?’ And I’m like, ‘she’s not bad, she’s just from another universe. She just like, has a different point of view, she’s on a mission, she’s doing her job, she’s fighting for her world’.”

Here’s the entire interview in video format:

John Noble is featured in the September issue of Rolling Stone‘s Top 18 TV Characters This Season, and describes Walter as “a bit of an archaeological artifact [..] That’s why he’s capable of astonishing insight -- but that’s also why he screws up his personal relationships. Like everything else we do on Fringe, it has a tinge of sadness.”

Welcome to our rewatch for episode 14 of Fringe season 1 – “Ability”. Join us as we round up all the light bulbs we can find in preparation for our Cortexiphan Challenge. We also keep an eye out for newly formed perspectives.

We have renamed this episode: Subject Hero. Because isn’t she just.

Newly Observed Perspectives

Are we ever going to find out why Jones was in Germany and what “state secrets” he was stealing? I can assume that it was somehow connected to William Bell? Or perhaps he stole some of Robert Bishop’s earlier work to help him with the next part of his mission? I can massage the plot and maybe bend it a bit, but it would be nice if his story had a bit more follow through.

Poor Tommy Newsstand. Having your orifices close up on you like that must be terrible. And look at September just gawping at him like a fish. Unlike Peter, Tommy just wasn’t worth intervening over. Spare a thought for Tommy next time you’re in a sulk, Peter.

Has Olivia ever looked more soldier-like than in her scene with Mitchell?

Looking back at the whole Olivia vs Mitchell animosity. I wonder if in retrospect Olivia has a better appreciation for what he and Jones were trying to do now that she’s in the thick of the conflict? Speaking of Mitch, I wonder what he’s up to these days?

Peter and his “weird connections”. Olivia and her puppy dogs eyes. Is there a more perfect couple than this?

I would love to know exactly how Peter and Markham met. Aside from reading comics in his alternate universe youth, Peter doesn’t strike me as the bookstore type. Is Peter part of a secret book club that we don’t know about? Did he once desperately put Markham on the hunt to find “Kicking Down Doors for Dummies”?

Peter quotes from ZFT:

“The advances of science, which are supposed to expand our understanding of the universe, will, if not carefully controlled, destroy the world as we know it. Our technological ambition, has not only driven us to the brink of catastrophe, the catastrophe has already begun.”

Presuming Bell wrote ZFT with the knowledge that Walter essentially triggered the catastrophe, perhaps he should have made room for “human immorality” alongside “the advances of science”. Clearly science is not to blame here – it’s the human application of science, when morally or emotionally impaired, that requires even greater control.

The Jones vs Harris scene implies that they weren’t working for the same side, or that agent Harassment was unaware that he was on the same side as Jones. I prefer the former, it makes more sense. Therefore, we can assume that Harris was indeed working for Bell, who charged Harris (and Winters) with activating his ‘children’ so that they could cross universes to free him from his prison (oh, and ready them for the coming war, of course). At least, that’s one possible interpretation. This scenario would also suggest that Nina was clued in on Harris.

“Before they must be regarded as soldiers, they must be regarded as recruits. And the expectation must be that the shall be unwilling.” Aside from being the classic ‘hero’ trope, what importance does the reluctance of a chosen one play in the cultivation of a hero? What specific qualities does such unwillingness breed once it has been converted? I just find it interesting that Bell expected his children to initially resist their potential. Was this consideration based on the natural mechanics of their predisposition, or was it something that he taught them? Oh Bellie, if only you were still here to explain yourself.

Olivia has powers alright..powers of deception. The rigged box test was another example of her ability to pull out a performance when needed. Even Peter was impressed. This isn’t a criticism as such, I just find it to be an interesting bow to her weaponry – something which might even come in handy over in the old AU. “Walternate, pwease! Pwease can I have a glass of water?” *SMASH!*

I still have to admire Olivia’s bravery in the face of catastrophe. What drove her to risk life and limb to diffuse the impossible bomb? It may have been many things – defiance, selflessness, insanity. How about faith? An incredible amount of self belief – Cortexiphan enhanced or innate. I’ve always got the sense that, when it boils down to it, Olivia can do almost anything that she puts her mind to. A hand for Peter too, coming back for his girl (and possibly diffusing the bomb with his mind skills), although allowing Dunham to shield him from the potential blast (I kid).

Possible Answers to Unresolved Questions

Why didn’t Bell publish ZFT?

Interesting, since Walternate didn’t hang about in publishing his version (even though it was a pack of half-truths). I can only assume that Bell wanted to keep it ‘underground’, as they say. Maybe he thought (like Walternate) that the world wasn’t ready for such truths? Or perhaps he wanted to protect Walter or Peter?

If the side-effects of the teleporter were “unadvertised”, how did Jones originally plan on making it safely to the alternate universe?

First, let’s just clarify that (as was later implied) the teleporter (or what it did to his molecular structure) would have provided Jones with a better chance of making it to the alternate universe without being ripped apart. Therefore, prior to that, he must have been planning to use Olivia’s ability to travel safely across. Similar to what we eventually see in the season 2 finale with the Cortexiphan kids and Walter. This would at least offer some explanation as to why Jones dropped her like she was hot after this episode.

Who fixed Nina’s hand?

I want to say Bell (did he chance one more trip?). Alternatively, I’d go for Samuel of Weissington.

Welcome to the rewatch for Fringe episode 13 of season 1 – “The Transformation”. In this rewatch we delve deep into our unconscious minds to observe and interpret new perspectives from events that we witnessed long ago.

We have renamed this episode: Tanks For The Memories – Part II.

Newly Observed Perspectives

Keeping with the dream/waking/sleep themes that we’ve been tracking, there were quite a few of them in this episode, including, Bowman and Hicks being sedated to suspend their transformation, to Olivia delving back into the memories of John Scott.

There goes Olivia being ruthless again – withholding the sedatives from a poor ‘Sonic The Hedgehogging’ Hicks. If this case wasn’t so personal to her would she have been quite so unethical in extracting an answer? Our Gate-Keeper’s moral compass doesn’t always point North.

Nina seems strangely remorseful when coming clean to Olivia about John Scott. It’s one of the first glimpses beyond her usual playful, mischievous veneer. Was she really that affected by having to deliver bad news to Olivia? I almost got the sense that, as much as she enjoys playing cat and mouse with Olivia, she actually respects her so much that, to a certain point, she cares what Olivia thinks of her.

Yay! The Bra & Panties Tank returns yet again! Funny how Walter let her take another dip after all his protestations last time round. I guess the lure of the B&P Tank is too much too resist.

Note the red hue of the hotel room as Olivia ‘wakes up’ in Scott’s memory. As we know, red is the marker for the alternate universe. But there’s also no getting away from the fact that the color is also used to signify memory in the worlds of Fringe. That said, memory and dreams are kind of like alternate realities in their own right, wouldn’t you say?

“Don’t worry he can’t see you, remember, you’re observing a memory.” In many ways it could be argued that the Observers are also viewing memory. They see events outside of time – past, future and present function like a stream, or flux. Both the Observers and Olivia’s memory observations indicate that the true nature of time is not linear. Someone operating outside of this function, could, in theory, cut and splice reality to their own will. With all these interwoven outlooks on observation, I continue to wonder whether there exists a meta-observer, of sorts. Dreams, reality, alternate universes, memories, the afterlife – which of these constructs reside on the top tier? That’s something I’ll continue to consider in season 3.

What I love about this episode is its exploration of the subconscious and how these elements are visually realized through dreams, memories and emotional bonds. We see Olivia dive deeper and deeper into Scott’s subconscious (which actually resides inside her own mind). As she does this, Scott becomes more coherent, more aware of his role in these reconstructed fragments. He is eventually able to direct her through his memories from different perspectives in a bid to prove his innocence.

I also appreciate the fact that this episode doesn’t just give us a sanitary look at the subconscious. It explores the idea that the subconscious is muddy terrain that relies of a high level of perception to accurately interpret what it is really telling us. We see Olivia wrestle with herself. She interprets Scott’s innocence and wants to believe him, but there exists other debris and emotional baggage that she needs to cut through before she can be certain. I still find it enjoyable to see her travel back to her waking state in order to corroborate Scott’s claims. She’s actually doing something quite unnatural to her – she doubting her instincts, perhaps because she’s lost a bit of trust in herself by this point.

And just to follow up on that, it’s interesting that Peter suspected Scott’s subconscious may have been trying to fool Olivia. Just the idea that Peter (of all people) bought into that wild notion shows that his character has come a long way. Or perhaps it shows a hint of jealousy? It also added another layer that Olivia had to wade through.

One of the flaws in this exploration is that Scott should have been able to prove himself to Olivia much earlier by simply showing her a fragment of his memory that would, beyond, doubt show that he was NSA. I guess the idea is that not all of Scott’s memories had been transferred to Olivia’s mind, so he had no way of showing them to her. But they didn’t do quite enough to explain that.

Astrid makes mention of her mom. I’d like to meet Mrs Farnsworth and tell her that her daughter is a credit to all lab assistants.

Nice line from Astrid: “So I guess the question is..what’s your instinct? When you met John. When you were looking into his eyes..was he for real?” Her intuition really helped Olivia arrive at her decision. See. Those two really should talk more often. Imagine the crimes that would be solved.

Interesting how the episode before Olivia’s ability really starts to be explored she finds internal resolution.

This episode seems to highlight the idea that the people we invest ourselves in shape us on a deeper level even once they are gone. The portion of Scott’s consciousness that remained in Olivia’s mind from the pilot episode has weighed heavy on her and adjusted her outlook.

Olivia’s journey in this episode allows us to consider the subconscious mind as being so ‘raw’ that it’s almost too difficult to interpret how it informs our actions through the layers upon layers of internal defence. I’m also curious to know where Scott’s subconscious went after it was purged from Olivia’s mind? Did it find the rest of his subconscious mind? Did it travel to the afterlife? Did it wither away? Or does it just exist in isolation somewhere? I just think the idea of resolution is really interesting, as that’s one of the perspectives consider when I watch the show. In other words, what are these characters trying to resolve, and how do their dreams and the alternate universe play into those goals? How much is their reality shaped by their individual and collective perceptions of the worlds around them?

Answers

Why did Conrad spike Bowman and Hicks?

Bowman and Hicks were working for the government secret service. He must have known that they were closing in on them and wanted to send a Sonic The Hedgehog-style message.

How could John Scott see Olivia Observing his memories?

First we have the premise that time is not linear, so we have to assume that memories also have the same freedom from time. Then we have to look at the subconscious mind and the idea that it operates on a different level to the conscious mind. Throw in a heightened individual like Olivia, and we can see how such memories function like the re-telling stories where the main players (Olivia and Scott) are able to step outside of the events and interact with them, and each other.

Best retrospective performer: Anna Torv

Best retrospective moment: Olivia’s various interactions with Scott.

Retrospective episode rating: 7.5/10

Welcome to the rewatch for Fringe episode 1.12 “The No Brainer”. In this rewatch we scoop up our brains and search for any new perspectives.

We’ve renamed this episode Please Don’t Hurt Daddy! Because, was it really about anything else?

Newly Observed Perspectives

R@chel says that Ella reminds her of Olivia. It’s not much, and I don’t hold value in pretty much anything that comes from her mouth, but it’s little things like this that might suggest the writers at least considered the idea of Ella being Olivia’s child at one point.

Did Body Shop Dude check out Olivia’s ass? That’s the second that’s happened this season. I always say it’s the important details that matter most.

Ah, the classic R@chel cooking a ‘pot of boiling water’ scene (I could be wrong, but I believe it was Page 48 who first came up with that delightful description for what she was actually doing). She gets one point for intuitively taking on board my hint about cooking Olivia a meal (although lets face it, she only did it so she wouldn’t hear Olivia’s phone call). But she loses two points for being a sucky parent. Could she have been any less concerned about Ella? If the Dunhamnator comes bursting through my door waving a gun, hair flailing all over the place, you better believe I’ve got my cape on ready to assist her in like 2 seconds flat. Screw the pasta, Gotham needs saving!

Is it just me or was R@chel trying to make Peter her baby daddy after 5 seconds of knowing the guy? And anyway, he might be good at birthday parties, but there’s no guarantee he’ll stay for longer than a few minutes. Ain’t that right, Peter?

Oh R@chel: ”My sister’s not really the weekend off type. That was always more me.” Your child almost had her brains melted and you’re trying to snare a date with Peter? Really, R@chel..really? Just look at how concerned Olivia is. That alone should have you, at the very least, intrigued.

Peter: “It’s amazing isn’t it? All these people and they don’t have a clue how crazy it all really is. The world, everything.” The irony is that Peter himself had no idea just how crazy it really was.

Jessica Warren’s arrival is one of the more interesting aspects of this episode – since by extension of her daughter, Carla, she’s connected to two acts which would forever alter Walter. His decision to abduct Peter from the alternate universe, and the lab fire which killed Carla and sent Walter to the asylum.

It was interesting to see Peter attempt to shield Walter from the reality of his past. But in doing so he was being incredibly unfair to both Walter and especially Jessica, who must have been desperate for some sort of closure. This is an example of how good intentions can be subjective – benefiting those who they serve most. Peter wanted to protect Walter, but he also wanted to hold on to his father and their newly forming relationship. Self preservation.

Olivia’s (I guess we can call it) faith in Walter’s capacity to handle this ghost from his past is another intriguing element. What did Dunham see in Walter that Peter couldn’t? More to the point, why (aside form selfish reasons) was Peter unable to trust his father to cope with Jessica’s arrival? Perhaps there’s such a thing as being too close to someone to see their true capability? This could be argued to be a similar to Walter’s inability to tell Peter the truth about his origins. Placing trust in a person’s human nature can be too much to bear because it means letting go, losing control. In fact all of our heroes really hate losing control of the world around them, yet when they let go and act on impulse we often see their true potential (Olivia crossing universes, Broyles protecting his team, etc)

I found it noteworthy that Olivia was able to take the perspective that it must also be hard for Jessica to come back to the place where she lost her daughter. I like that. It’s in-keeping with Olivia’s character. Furthermore, it’s interesting that Peter’s ‘underestimation’ of his father angered Olivia slightly. I’m loathe to place too much value in this of all episodes, but I found that to be an intriguing little aspect that I can’t recall previously picking up on. Olivia is really observant and knows what it’s like to be underestimated, so it’s no wonder that this aspect of Peter’s relationship with his father would bother her.

Question for Harris: Were you born an a-hole or is it something that you acquired along the way? I only ask because I’m interested in this whole nature vs nurture thing.

Livvy is always good for a comedy moment:

Charlie: “What about Harris?”

Olivia: “..Screw him!”

Interesting Peter tidbit: “I don’t underestimate my father, by the way. I understand him, sometimes more than I want to.” Nothing we didn’t already know, but it perhaps informs us of Peter’s later ‘acceptance’ of his father’s actions.

You know, although I like the sentiment behind Olivia’s response, the following line from Peter doesn’t half make him seem slow on the uptake:

“I don’t get it, he knew he was killing those people. Why would the kid protect a murderer like that?”

It also makes me think of Walternate and Peter’s haste in abandoning him. Olivia’s answer only works on emotional connections. Peter’s bond with Walternate was broken by an act that Walter committed, and yet even once that truth is out in the open, Walter still gets the boy. I really feel sorry for Walternate and I wonder whether he might have suspected that Peter would always choose Walter over him?

How did Brian Dempsey know to target Olivia with the virus?

Given the state of FBI security, he probably did some digging and found that Olivia was closing in on him. Captain Genius then decided to target someone she cared about, namely Ella. It still doesn’t make much sense, but not much of the plot really came together in a satisfying way.
