yodh: In faithfulness You've afflicted me

We follow a Christ who suffered. As a core part of the Christian life is to be made into the image of Jesus, it should not surprise us when we suffer and go though hardships. The amazing thing is that these hardships result in making us more like Jesus in many other ways too. But it is not just in our own lives, others too are encouraged to fear God and follow more faithfully when they see us faithfully persevere under trial.

teth: Good for me that suffering came

We can be tempted to think that suffering should just not happen to us, especially if we claim to be loved by the Creator of the Universe. We think that suffering is contradictory to there being a loving God who is totally good and all powerful. The writer of Psalm 119 disagrees. He sees that suffering has brought spiritual blessing into his life: "Before I was afflicted I went astray, but now I obey your word" (v67 see also v71). He concludes that it is the very fact that God is good that suffering should play a part in his life. "You are good, and what you do is good". God is good, and he is making us more like Christ even though allowing suffering in our lives.

If we realise our deepest needs and rightly understand what
God has done for us in Christ through the cross we naturally will see Him as
that which is most precious to us. He is all we need and full of amazing love
towards us. As it says in Psalm 119 v64, the earth is full of His love. That is
why in good times or bad times our hearts will be filled with praise towards
Him, our lives will be based on His word and we will enjoy fellowship with
others who also love Christ. He is our all sufficient Lord!

The Psalms are said to be the hymn book of the church. But is it possible to sing some of the difficult Psalms? A friend asked me to record a metered version on Psalm 79 to the music of "Oh the deep deep love of Jesus" and this is the result. Words by Garry Williams...

When the Christian life is tough, God gives us comfort through His word. Even when the world around us is rejecting Christ, ignoring Christ, belittling Christ, we can know God's very real comfort. This is especially true when we feed on the words of scripture, reading them, meditating on them and singing them. It is then, even in the darkness night of suffering, that we can know in a very real sense His comfort. His comfort helps us then to live for Christ, despite being surrounded by others who reject our very precious Saviour.

Living in a world hostile to God it can be tempting to want to retreat into a Christian ghetto and let the world get on with their lives without Christ, or to the other extreme water down our own commitment to the God who saved us to avoid being persecuted. His unfailing love for us however produces in us a love for Him and His word. It is right that this love should drive and motivate us to speak out for Him giving an answer for the hope that we have in Christ, even to those who openly oppose Him.

When we are discouraged and laid low it is the God of the Bible who through His word strengthens and encourages us to walk victoriously in his ways. He keeps us, teaches us, strengthens us, and empowers us to walk in the way of his word... It is He who strengthens us to live obediently even when our struggles seem to overwhelm us. That is why it is so important to open up the Bible when we feel discouraged and feel we don't have the strength to continue. Recently I preached here in the Bursa church (www.bursakilisesi.com) from Isaiah 50. Note that specifically the Lord Jesus (the Messiah) knows just the word to sustain those who are weary. see Isaiah 50:4

As we walk the way of the word of the God who saved us we struggle
with what is within our own hearts as we seek to live obediently. At the same time we find
ourselves living in a hostile world in which there are those who will often oppose us and the God who
saved us. The Christian however looks to God in these situations and longs for Him to deal with those who are ultimately against the Lord Jesus. We long for the Kingdom to come. Our job is to live by grace in obedience to the Word and take up our cross and follow the One who also walked a road of suffering.

At the beginning of the second section of Psalm 119, having longed for the obedience that comes from the grace of God who saves, the writer of the Psalm asks the obvious question: How can I live like that? The Psalmist finds that answer to living in a way that pleases the God of the word is by storing that very word up in our hearts and relying on His help to live it out. "I have stored up your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you."

The second song of the first stanza of Psalm 119. Having seen clearly that the blessing of the LORD is a life of obedience to His commands, the Psalmist reflects on his own life. He sees that while the LORD has indeed blessed him, he longs for more blessing that would result in a greater obedience and more praise to the God who saved him. He longs that he might not be put to shame in this life by walking in disobedience. He longs too that on the day when the Lord Jesus returns he would not be ashamed having strayed from the way of the word of the LORD. No, he will praise Him in this life, and glorify Him on the last day. May our longing be the same!

alef: Blessed are those whose ways are blameless

In the first verses of Psalm 119 we are confronted with the fact that the LORD who saves is a God who gives commands to be obeyed. "Blessed are those whose ways are blameless", blameless not here being sinless perfection, but a heart turned towards walking the ways of the LORD. It's only with the grace of the LORD that we might possibly be able to do this. Obedience is therefore the blessing He gives to those He has saved. As Christian believers, the blessing we are given is a heart and life that lives in submission to the commands of our Lord Jesus who is the LORD.

Waiting

The last track in the Journey project. Waiting. Any journey comes to an end. The journey of the Christian believer will end one of two ways. Either we will die and go into the presence of the Lord Jesus for eternity or the Lord Jesus will return as Lord and Judge before then and take us to be with Himself as He has promised.
This song focuses on the fact that the Lord Jesus could return at any time. As we continue on our journey it is right to expect that He will do just that and right that we depend on Him for help so that we unashamed when we he does return. "And now, dear children, continue in him, so that when he appears we may be confident and unashamed before him at his coming." 1 John 2:28
I want to thank everyone who has helped with this project. Dan Went and Dave Brady for their drumming, Yannick Leroy for playing flute, Andy Downe for helping with piano and keyboards, Charles DeBurg for the solo on "Counted as one who is clean", Adam from Istanbul for helping with piano on "Waiting".

You

The Westminster Shorter Catechism starts asking the following question:
What is the chief end of man? The answer it gives might actually surprise many people who claim to be Christian:
"Man's chief end is to glorify God, and to enjoy him forever." On a similar note John Piper writes that
"God is most glorified in us when we are most satisfied in him." Enjoy God? Be satisfied in Him?
This is actually where we are heading on our Journey. To the God who saved us. To be with Him for
eternity and enjoy being in His presence. Our journey in some measure should reflect this.
We are not with Him yet but we can and should enjoy Him now. "You" is a song for the journey;
a song for the God who love us and whom we love in response. "You, O LORD"...

Return to him and live

There are times on the journey when we seem to lose our way. Love for other things creep into our lives and our love for the One who saved us cools. It is a wonderful thing that in times like these the Lord patiently calls and urges us through His word back into fellowship with Himself. This song is from one believer to another urging them to return to the Lord, to love Him, honour Him, serve Him and walk with Him. The fact that the Lord Jesus will return in his power and glory as Saviour and Judge should be an encouragement to us all to return to Him and live.

Why am I suffering?

Our sufferings have a purpose if we belong to Christ. They serve to make us more like Him! In the New Testament
Peter writes: "[Trials] have come so that your faith - of greater worth than gold, which perishes even though
refined by fire - may be proved genuine and may result in praise, glory and honor when Jesus Christ is revealed."
Sometimes from the midst of suffering we cry out "why!", thankfully for us there is always an answer...

This is the first of two songs about suffering, a very real part of the journey. Something however that God uses in our lives for his glory and for our eternal good. One major comfort in our suffering is that the Lord Jesus walked the same road. He suffered. We also will suffer. That is actually one of His promises! (see Matthew 10: 24-25) When we suffer he knows our pain and we find Him to be a real comfort as we fix our eyes and thoughts on Him.

A true grasp of the wonder of the bitter-sweet cross gives the desire to see others understand it's message.
You alone are worthy

As the journey progresses, no matter how hard the struggles and trials, the love of the Christian for Jesus Christ continues to grow. As Peter says, "though we have not seen Him, we love him and are filled with an inexpressible and glorious joy". Along with that love it is perfectly natural that praise for him might also grow too.
When we think of what he has done for us how can we not give Him our highest praise? Dying on the cross and rising from the dead to give us who believe in Him life beyond the grave, forgiving us time and time again and showing us mercy every day. Only He is worthy to receive our highest praise!

Take

One might argue that this song is a bit intense. Well, in 'Take' I've tried to capture something of the struggle
with sin that is the experience of everyone on the journey of true faith in Christ. Our walk is after all with
One who is pure and holy above all, it is only right that those who know Him should seek holiness themselves.
Paradoxically, in the Christian walk, a deep longing and struggle for holiness is right at home with a
peace and trust that comes from knowing Christ Himself. The verse and chorus of this song seek to convey those
two aspects of our faith. So an intense prayer to 'drive out the night', is perfectly at home with
'You're my hope for I know the One I trust'.
May the Lord Jesus himself help and inspire us all to walk in holiness before God as we trust completely in Him.

Messiah, Jesus, Lord

This is what the journey is all about. Well, not what, rather whom the journey is all about.
Yes, it's a journey to heaven, but also a journey to be with the One who claimed to be God and proved it by what he did.
I often hear people claim that Jesus was not God and seek to prove that from the New Testament.
They fail to really understand what is going on, and fail to understand Jesus' words in the content of the Old Testament.
The Jewish leaders of his day understood exactly what Jesus claimed and wanted to stone him for it!
Thankfully in the New Testament we don't have a Jesus who merely claimed to be God, but also proved
it by the healing the sick, raising the dead and himself rising from the dead by His own authority. Messiah, Jesus, Lord!!

More grace

There isn't a day goes by when I am not grateful that the God of the Bible is a God who forgives. James 4: 6 puts it like this: "But he gives us more grace". Just when you think you've blown it for the last time and that all grace has run out, God, through the Lord Jesus, forgives and gives more grace.
That's what this song is all about. The amazing gift of the forgiveness of sins! But just as amazing is that God doesn't just forgive, but is at work in us to help us stop sinning and that He has promised us a day when we will be completely rescued from the presence and power of sin.
I'm looking forward to that day very much! Until then, there is more grace for the rebel who returns and the humble who believe!

This is the title track to the "journey" project. Inspiration comes from a quote by John Bunyan. In his auto biography, Grace Abounding to the Chief of Sinners, he talks about the struggles of the Christian life and exclaims: "Oh! the diligence of Satan! Oh! the desperateness of man's heart!". There is of course grace abounding for sinners who make Christ their Lord and Saviour.

I remember very clearly the Lord speaking to me though Romans 4: 7-8. This was one of the first times that I felt assurance that the Lord had forgiven my sin. That was a beautiful moment.
"Blessed are those whose transgressions are forgiven, whose sins are covered. Blessed is the one whose sin the Lord will never count against them."
Amen!

A song about the good news about Jesus going to people all round the world. We are all called to be part of this whoever we are and whatever our gifts are. What are you doing to help Jesus' message become better known around the world??

One day I was staying in a hotel and felt a very real sense on my sinfulness.
Later that evening I wrote this song as I dwelt on the fact that although God is perfectly free of any imperfection and must rightly pushish those who live in rebellion towards Him, He promises to forgive those who turn to Him truly sorry for their sin and ready to live with Him as Lord
Although not explicit in the song, our repentance in only accepted on the basis of what Christ accomplished on the cross

I've always thought about death alot. My own father died while I was in my childhood and so I grew up thinking that death could be just round the corner.
The wonderful thing about being a Christian, is that death is no longer someting that is feared. It will happen to all of us one day, that is for certain. For the Christian, that day will be the start of something very wonderful

Crucify

I wrote this song in the summer of 2000. I was struggling with sin and got thinking about the passion with which the crowds cried out "crucify" to see the Lord Jesus put to death.
How much passion do I have that my own sin might be put to death and crucified so that I might live for the One who was crucified for me... I wrote this song to help me wage war again my own sinful desires.

Exploring the wonderful truth of how only the cross of the Lord Jesus can reconcile the fact that God is love but at the same time fully just to punich sin. How can he remain righteous and punish sin yet love me someone who has rebelled against him and still fails? The cross is the answer"

My heart won't find rest

Based on the words of St. Augustine.
"Great art Thou, O Lord, and greatly to be praised; great is Thy power, and of Thy wisdom there is no end. And man, being a part of Thy creation, desires to praise Thee, man, who bears about with him his mortality, the witness of his sin, even the witness that Thou "resistest the proud, " - yet man, this part of Thy creation, desires to praise Thee. Thou movest us to delight in praising Thee; for Thou hast formed us for Thyself, and our hearts are restless till they find rest in Thee. Lord, teach me to know and understand which of these should be first, to call on Thee, or to praise Thee; and likewise to know Thee, or to call upon Thee."

I think this is the first song I wrote, one of them at least. One thing I try and do in all my songs is keep Christ focused. In fact that is the key to our Christian lives too, Christ likeness, Christ centred. He is everything!

Wrote this song while reading through Isaiah. I always love to read of how God's love will be shown to all nations in the Old Testament. We are familiar with such a theme in the New Testament, but sometimes don't realise how strong a theme it is in the Old too
