<p>I love it when it snows in Washington. Everything stops. People stay home. School and activities are canceled. We all drop everything and savor in the miracle that it actually snowed this year. <em>Because</em> it will all be gone tomorrow (or in most cases that afternoon).</p>
<p><a href="http://frommynest.typepad.com/.a/6a00e5521eee0f88340168e5abd1d2970c-pi" style="display: inline;"><img alt="Snow5" border="0" class="asset asset-image at-xid-6a00e5521eee0f88340168e5abd1d2970c image-full" src="http://frommynest.typepad.com/.a/6a00e5521eee0f88340168e5abd1d2970c-800wi" title="Snow5" /></a></p>
<p>Of course some would say that it's all because we don't know how to drive in the snow. I say, "Phooey" to that. You see, a big part of knowing how to drive in the snow is knowing when to not drive in the snow. That means pretty much everytime it snows here since we do not have snow plows or salt or snow tires or <em>(ahem)</em> much experience.</p>
<p><a href="http://frommynest.typepad.com/.a/6a00e5521eee0f88340162ffb61254970d-pi" style="display: inline;"><img alt="Snow4" border="0" class="asset asset-image at-xid-6a00e5521eee0f88340162ffb61254970d image-full" src="http://frommynest.typepad.com/.a/6a00e5521eee0f88340162ffb61254970d-800wi" title="Snow4" /></a></p>
<p>But back to our snow/slow day. Amazingly it has turned into days. Two, to be exact and it is expected that it will last another two more days. That gives us four days to savor in the delight of the stillness of winter. The wonder of how things seem magically different when covered in white. Four days of home, of slow, and hot chocolate three times a day.</p>
<p><a href="http://frommynest.typepad.com/.a/6a00e5521eee0f8834016760aacbbc970b-pi" style="display: inline;"><img alt="Snow3" border="0" class="asset asset-image at-xid-6a00e5521eee0f8834016760aacbbc970b image-full" src="http://frommynest.typepad.com/.a/6a00e5521eee0f8834016760aacbbc970b-800wi" title="Snow3" /></a></p>
<p>We also get to watch the delight of someone truly experiencing it for the first time. He sat by that window watching with glee as the snow came falling down. He just knew that something exciting was happening and he stared at it in wonder. (I know his face is shadowed, but just look at that dimple on his cheek. Isn't one of the most adorable things you have ever seen? The shadow made it stand out more. That's why I chose this one to show.)</p>
<p><a href="http://frommynest.typepad.com/.a/6a00e5521eee0f88340168e5abd325970c-pi" style="display: inline;"><img alt="Snow2" border="0" class="asset asset-image at-xid-6a00e5521eee0f88340168e5abd325970c image-full" src="http://frommynest.typepad.com/.a/6a00e5521eee0f88340168e5abd325970c-800wi" title="Snow2" /></a></p>
<p>So here's to two more days of snow/slow, of getting up early and rushing outside, and hot chocolate three times a day. Soon it will be gone and the hustle and bustle of our days before will return. Then we'll wait in hope that it will come once again before the season ends.</p><xhtml:img xmlns:xhtml="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml" src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/FromMyNest/~4/FqALcIQR6fo" height="1" width="1" /></div></content>

<p>The first week we made brownies from scratch. We used The Barefoot Contessa's <a href="http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/ina-garten/outrageous-brownies-recipe3/index.html" target="_self">Outrageous Brownies</a> recipe. Oh, my. These are the best brownies you will ever eat. It makes a lot, so plan ahead on giving some away! We did this and then the next day we all came down with colds and were stuck with all of them to eat. Luckily, these freeze very well.</p>
<p><a href="http://frommynest.typepad.com/.a/6a00e5521eee0f88340162fd284f52970d-pi" style="display: inline;"><img alt="Baking3" border="0" class="asset asset-image at-xid-6a00e5521eee0f88340162fd284f52970d image-full" src="http://frommynest.typepad.com/.a/6a00e5521eee0f88340162fd284f52970d-800wi" title="Baking3" /></a></p>
<p>This last week, we made an apple pie to go along with Thanksgiving dinner. I peeled the apples then Hannah sliced all of them for the pie. It was a big pie and took her a long time to do it, but she stuck with it and sliced them all.</p>
<p><a href="http://frommynest.typepad.com/.a/6a00e5521eee0f8834015437a66fda970c-pi" style="display: inline;"><img alt="Baking4" border="0" class="asset asset-image at-xid-6a00e5521eee0f8834015437a66fda970c image-full" src="http://frommynest.typepad.com/.a/6a00e5521eee0f8834015437a66fda970c-800wi" title="Baking4" /></a></p>
<p>Becca's job was to help me with the crust and the rest of the filling for the pie. (You can see how our crust turned out. That was my fault and not hers. For some reason I have been able to make a good pie crust the last few times I've made pies. It's frustrating because I have never had problems before. Oh, well. I guess that means I just need more practice.) She did a great job with dealing with my problematic crust and reassued me several times that it was okay and that the pie will still taste great. And it did.</p>
<p>Now to decide what we will make this week. . .</p>

<p style="text-align: center;"> </p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: 18pt;"><span style="text-decoration: underline;">Things to notice:</span><br /></span></p>
<p style="text-align: left;">#1 When you squeeze it tightly, it turns into a solid.</p>
<p style="text-align: left;"><a href="http://frommynest.typepad.com/.a/6a00e5521eee0f88340162fc422849970d-pi" style="display: inline;"><img alt="Goo7" border="0" class="asset asset-image at-xid-6a00e5521eee0f88340162fc422849970d image-full" src="http://frommynest.typepad.com/.a/6a00e5521eee0f88340162fc422849970d-800wi" title="Goo7" /></a></p>
<p style="text-align: left;">#2 When you let it go, it goes it turns back into a liquid.</p>
<p style="text-align: left;"><a href="http://frommynest.typepad.com/.a/6a00e5521eee0f8834015436c04491970c-pi" style="display: inline;"><img alt="Goo6" border="0" class="asset asset-image at-xid-6a00e5521eee0f8834015436c04491970c image-full" src="http://frommynest.typepad.com/.a/6a00e5521eee0f8834015436c04491970c-800wi" title="Goo6" /></a></p>
<p style="text-align: left;">#3 When you hit it with your finger, it turns into a solid. But if you keep your finger on it for a long time, it sinks as if it was a liquid.</p>
<p style="text-align: left;"><a href="http://frommynest.typepad.com/.a/6a00e5521eee0f88340162fc422abc970d-pi" style="display: inline;"><img alt="Goo8" border="0" class="asset asset-image at-xid-6a00e5521eee0f88340162fc422abc970d image-full" src="http://frommynest.typepad.com/.a/6a00e5521eee0f88340162fc422abc970d-800wi" title="Goo8" /></a></p>

While there are only few that are able to be overnight pets (I've had to make a rule that all containers, jars, etc. have to be emptied before dinner time), we have many pets that are just friends for a day. <p>Each one that is found is carefully scooped up and brought to a little home for frogs (A cardboard box filled with carefully selected vegetation, rocks, twigs, and a bowl full of water). During their brief visit, they are protected, entertained, and introduced to many new friends.</p>
<p>Although I am sure that they enjoyed their short visit to their little frog santuary, I can almost hear their little sigh of relief as they are carefully placed back into the wild and can be on their merry little way.</p><xhtml:img xmlns:xhtml="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml" src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/FromMyNest/~4/zoULUDJZaaA" height="1" width="1" /></div></content>
