It’s that time of year again. The leaves are changing, the air is getting crisp and cool, and children everywhere are planning their costumes for Halloween night. I LOVE fall and all the things that go along with the change of the seasons. And I especially love how excited the kids get over all of the fun that Halloween brings!

Visit a pumpkin patch to choose the perfect pumpkins for carving, then head home and get creative! A simple design can be achieved using only a paring knife or small serrated blade. Larger patterns can be cut with a jigsaw or even an electric drill if you want something really intricate.

Hayrides

Hayrides are a fun way to get in the fall spirit. Find a local farm that has hayrides and pumpkins ripe for the picking. Day-time hayrides are better for younger kids, while night-time hayrides are exciting for kids who like to be spooked and surprised.

Fall Leaves

Playing in a big pile of leaves is basically a right of passage for childhood. There’s nothing quite as exciting as raking up a yard full of leaves and jumping in. Pure joy!

Trick-or-Treating

Kids wait all year long for October 31st to come around. Some of my fondest childhood memories are of trick-or-treating. Picking out a costume, ringing doorbells, trading treats and comparing how much candy you scored at the end of the night.

Pumpkin Carving

Carving pumpkins is a fun family activity and the perfect way to start your Halloween celebrations. Whether you choose a traditional jack-o-lantern or get creative with paint, stickers, and stencils – carving pumpkins is always a good time!

Haunted Houses

If you have older kids who like to be spooked and surprised, haunted houses and scary trails are so much fun! The haunted houses near me are always super popular and seem to get bigger and better each year. You can usually find a few listed on Facebook if you search the local events section.

If you want something a little less creepy, try searching for Halloween fairs and festivals near me. Lots of schools host Halloween events and trunk-or-treats that are a bit less scary but still lots of fun!

Corn Maze

Getting lost in corn maze is a classic fall activity for all ages. We have so many great pumpkin farms near me that have giant corn mazes along with lots of other fall festivities. My kids love getting lost in these, they’re so much fun!

Monster Jam at Carowinds –Thunder Alley event Saturdays and Sundays September 11 thru October 10th. Free with park admission, 11am to 5pm.

Last weekend we had the chance to check out the Monster Jam Thunder Alley experience at Carowinds. Needless to say, my kiddos were over the moon excited. They love all things trucks and this event is the ultimate for monster truck lovers of all ages.

Monster Jam Trucks

It’s hard to describe how gigantic and awesome these trucks are in person. Just standing beside them is crazy, they’re HUGE! And there are several on display to take pictures with. Megalodon, El Toro Loco, Zombie and even Grave Digger.

But the coolest part of this event is getting to take a ride in one! We got to ride in a Monster Truck. You can purchase a VIP pass for a specific ride time or wait in the stand-by line. The VIP pass also gives you the option of choosing a Monster Jam gift bag or build-a-truck toy with your purchase.

We got to ride in Megalodon. After boarding the 10-passenger truck and safely buckling in, our driver received the green light and hit the gas pedal. Thankfully the ride starts off not-too rocky because I was honestly, my heart skipped a beat. You don’t realized just how high off the ground these trucks are until you’re sitting inside one. It’s wild!

My little dudes were all smiles as our monster truck turned onto the course and headed for a hill. The ride gets bumpy as you climb over a couple of hills. Our driver even did a donut which really had everyone grinning and excited!

Carowinds Amusement Park

This event is great for all-ages. We’re season pass holders for Carowinds and visit the park often, so this was an extra treat along with our usual favorite rides and fun. The Great Pumpkin Fest and Scarowinds kick off this weekend (September 18th) so if you go you can check out all the fall fun!

And Winterfest is right around the corner…..

How to Care for Mums – the secret to keep your mums beautiful and blooming until Halloween (or longer!)

What’s your favorite season? Mine is without a doubt FALL. There’s just something so wonderful about when September hits and the leaves start to change. I love that little chill in the air that makes you want to cozy up by a campfire or cuddle up with a good book and a cup of soup. I love football weekends and trips to the pumpkin patch!

And I love the look of fall. Fall porch ideas are all over Pinterest and I love the look of pumpkins and potted mums on the doorstep. But I could never get my mums to last more than a few weeks, until now….

Ya’ll, I stumbled on a gardening secret that actually works. Not just for mums too, it’s great for bringing any wilting flowers or plants back to life. It’s inexpensive and organic too!

How to Care for Mums

So what’s the secret? Banana peels. Banana peels are loaded with nutrients that are great for growing plants. They act as a slow-release fertilizer, adding essential elements to soil as they decompose.

Potassium, nitrogen, phosphorous and magnesium promote plant growth and help build resistance to pests and disease.

How to Use Banana Peels as Fertilizer

1. You can cut-up banana peels and bury them right into the soil of your mums.
2. Place a fresh banana peel in water and allow to soak for 1 to 2 days. Use the water to water your plants as you normally would.
3. Place a whole banana peel over in the center of your plant. As it decomposes it will slowly release nutrients into the plant

Are Mums Perennials?

Mums (also known as chrysanthemums) are fall favorites. They come in all shades of colors and are the perfect fall flower. And yes, mums are perennials, but they can be tricky to grow. If you wait until fall to plant your mums they won’t have a chance to root into the ground well before cold weather comes along. Plant them earlier in the spring and you’re more likely to see them bloom again.

How often water mums?

Mums need lots of water! Aim for watering about one inch a week in the early spring and increase to 2-3 times per week during the warmer months of summer. Plant them with mulch to hold moisture and give them more protection.

Soil should be damp but drain well. Too much water and the roots will begin to rot.
