Could it be possible to “cure” a frozen shoulder in 90 seconds? Impossible, right? Well before we get into that, it is important to understand that most people that have suffered from frozen shoulder, have had to go through months and even years of therapy to get rid of just some of their symptoms…with many still never really get rid of the problem.

Not all frozen shoulders are created equal. With that said, many times a simple “tweak” here and there in the way of activating a muscle group, or doing some simple soft-tissue work can indeed “cure” the frozen shoulder. Other times it takes a little more work.

How I Cured a Frozen Shoulder in 90 seconds

Years ago, one of my clients named Dawn came to train with me one day because here regular trainer could not make the session. I started the session, as Dawn warmed up, with the usual questions that I ask any new client.

“How are you feeling?” “Is there anything physical I need to be aware of before we get started?”

Dawn stopped me there and told me about her “frozen shoulder” problem. Dawn proceeded to tell me that she could not do anything above 90 degrees with her right arm, and she listed all of the exercises that are off limits. I asked Dawn a few questions about her injury, the diagnosis and how long she had been suffering from this “frozen shoulder.”

Dawn told me that it had been 10 years since she was diagnosed with Frozen Shoulder. I was shocked. Not only was I shocked that it had been 10 years, but more so, that she was not able to ever find anything to make it better…in essence, get rid of it completely. After many years of traditional physical therapy, she just gave up.

After a few more pointed questions, I started to get a bit suspicious of whether Dawn’s frozen shoulder was truly frozen and whether it could be fixed.

I asked Dawn if she would mind me trying a few things on her shoulder, and that it would take less than 2 minutes. She agreed, but warned me that she had been through years of PT and to countless doctors and nothing ever helped her shoulder. She told me with a slight grin, that if I wanted to try, why not. Couldn’t hurt, right?

After about a minute of doing various soft-tissue work on and around her shoulder area, Dawn asked what I was doing. I simply told her to trust me, and I was almost finished. I took about 30 seconds instructing Dawn to perform a few basic exercises to her right shoulder.

90 seconds later, I was finished. I asked Dawn to lift her arm up over her head. Dawn looked at me as if I was crazy. It had been 10 years, living in this limiting world of no motion and pain. There was no way in Dawn’s mind that she would be able to do this. After all, she would have to live the rest of her life with this pain and “frozen shoulder.”

After some pleading with her to just trust me, she finally started to lift her arm. As she approached the normal range of motion that she has had I noticed a strange look on her face. She seemed surprised at first with the noticeable lack of pain. However, she was still unconvinced as she continued to the 90-degree range.

Finally, Dawn reached 90 degrees, and with a big breath, she continued on her way. I was fixated on her arm as it reached high in the air and finally stopped, while pointing directly above her head. She did it. As I watched her hand, my eyes finally returned to her face where I saw tears streaming down her cheeks and the biggest smile ever!

After 10 years of having a “Frozen Shoulder,” Dawn could move her arm above her head, with no pain, no limits. It was amazing for her. She hugged me and asked me how in the world did I do that? “you are the miracle man!” She said.

“No miracles” I said. “Just a good understanding of anatomy, proper function, and a little bit of non-traditional therapy.” Dawn told me that she really didn’t care too much about that, but that after 10 years of doctors and PT’s telling her that she would probably never move her shoulder past 90 degrees without surgery, I was truly her “miracle man!” She thanked me and we had an awesome session that day.

Her life changed in 90 seconds.

I just saw a new article in the San Francisco Chronicle abouta a new frozen shoulder brace that you wear at night.

For many persons using ROTATORELIEVER™ the major benefit is that they can avoid medications and can cancel scheduled shoulder surgeries which are costly (typically $12,500) and require intensive rehab afterwards, and extensive time off work. For most people who suffer from rotator cuff pain, frozen shoulder or shoulder bursitis it’s enough to return to normal day to day activities.

Now I don’t know if the brace works or not but there were 2 key points from the article.

1) Even with the brace you need to still be doing some sort of frozen shoulder exercise.

2) You can cure frozen shoulder without the need for surgery or physical therapy.

Many people have asked, “What can I do if my frozen shoulder pain persists after physical therapy”?Some health professionals will then recommend that you get a steroid injection into your frozen shoulder.

Steroid injection — Injecting a steroid into the shoulder joint may help to speed recovery over the short term, especially if a course of physical therapy is done after the injection. Following the steroid injection, it is important to limit activity, treat pain as needed, and begin stretching and strengthening exercises. UptoDate.com – Frozen Shoulder

Steroid injections, like cortisone shots, are a very potent treatment as they basically prevent your body’s immune system from responding (it is the over response from your immune system that causes a lot of the pain and inflammation in your shoulder joint which we call frozen shoulder. As a results this frozen shoulder treatment option should not be taken lightly.

Before opting for a cortisone shot, I recommend that you get some soft tissue work like massage (see massage for frozen shoulder) or active release therapy (A.R.T.) as these treatments can release muscular knots and hot spots that are another major cause of frozen shoulder pain.

Today we will finish our look at the stages of frozen shoulder with the third or Thawing Stages of Frozen Shoulder. As the name suggests, it is during this stage that you will start to get your range of motion back. This stage can actually last between 4 months and 2 years! It is essential to do frozen shoulder exercises that strengthen the joint and muscles around the joint, stretching, range of motion, and targeted soft tissue work for your shoulder.

This is where people really start to feel better. I see people getting to this stage of frozen shoulder in as little as 3 months if they are following a good treatment program.

Frozen shoulder is a dilating condition that generally progresses through three different stages. The Freezing Stage, The Frozen Stage, and The Thawing Stage. In the video above I discuss the Freezing Stage of frozen shoulder. The freezing stage can last up to 9 months. How long the freezing stage lasts You will be experiencing a lot of intense pain with a gradual reduction in the range of motion that you have in your shoulder. The increase in pain and decrease in range of motion go hand in hand because the more your shoulder hurts, the less you are going to move it, the less you move it, the more it freezes.

Working on maintaining your range of motion is very important during this stage so your shoulder doesn’t get locked up. Doctors will commonly prescribe OTC drugs like Advil to help with the pain but maintaining your range of motion is key to treating your frozen shoulder during the freezing stage.

What are the proper steps to treating frozen shoulder? There are 2

1.Get Diagnosed

2. Use a Comprehensive Frozen Shoulder Program

You want to find a program that includes: Strengthening, Stretching, Range of Motion work, and Soft Tissue work to eliminate adhesions and knots which are restricting your movement.

Click here to view the embedded video.

A solid frozen shoulder treatment plan will not only get rid of your frozen shoulder but keep it from coming back. Frozen shoulder does come back. I just had an email exchange with a new client and it was the 3 time that she had frozen shoulder (in the same shoulder everytime).

When I started asking her questions about the program that she had used prior to becoming one of my clients I discovered that she had never done any soft tissue work for her shoulder and had only done a little bit of strengthening. Her program mostly consisted of stretching. If you’re a regular reader of my blog then you know that stretching is not enough to get rid of frozen shoulder.

Most people don’t know a lot about the soft tissue part of treatment. Go here to see my 90 seconds to frozen shoulder pain relief where I show you exactly how to put soft tissue work to work for you.

The actual cause of frozen shoulder it not fully known. This is probably because people get frozen shoulder for so many different reasons. But by and far the number one way that I have seen people get frozen shoulder is when they stop moving shoulder for an extended peroid of time.

Common reasons for doing this are because your should is in a sling, perhaps you have injured your shoulder, or you might be recovering from surgery. When you stop moving your shoulder joint, things called adhesions form and prevent your from moving your shoulder through a normal range of motion. So it is sort of a self fulfilling prophecy. Stop moving your shoulder and adhesions form so that you can’t move your shoulder.
