It is an unfortunate fact of life that some of the lowest priced foods, from fast food value menus to cheap potato chips, are also some of the least healthy. It is possible, however, to create excellent tasting, nutritious meals, even on a tight budget.

The key to planning and creating healthy meals on a limited budget is good forward planning and solid nutritional knowledge.

Step 1 – The shopping list
Anyone who has visited a supermarket lately knows how dangerous it is to enter the store without a shopping list in hand. Shopping without a sense of what you need – and don’t need – opens you up to all manner of temptation, and most of those tempting foods are not nutritious.

In addition, picking up all those extra items can easily blow your food budget and leave you without the funds to plan those healthy, nutritious meals. A good trick is to keep a note pad near the table or refrigerator. Having the notepad within easy reach makes it easy to keep track of the foods you need to stock up on.

Step 2 – Watch those flyers
Most major food store chains publish weekly sales ads, usually as inserts in the local newspaper. Keeping track of these sales, and taking advantage of the low prices to stock up, is a great way to gather a cupboard full of healthy food. Once the pantry is full of fruits, vegetables and other healthy fare, it will be much easier to create healthy recipes the entire family will love. In addition, locally grown, in season fruits and vegetables are usually more of a bargain than out of season or shipped fruits and vegetables.

Step 3 – Stock up on staples
Essential staple foods, such as flour, rice, and pasta are frequently put on sale as loss leaders at major groceries. Stocking up on these essentials when prices are low is a great way to stretch any food budget.

Step 4 – Never shop when you are hungry
The old advice to never shop when you are hungry is definitely true. Shopping when you are hungry is a sure way to give into temptation, bust the food budget, and stock up on all the wrong foods.

Step 5 – Become a label guru
Nutritional labels contain a wealth of information, but it is up to each shopper to read those labels and understand what they mean. Nutritional labels contain complete information on not just calories and fats, but the amounts of various essential vitamins and minerals as well. It is important to know how to read labels in order to get the best nutritional bang for your food bucks.

Step 6 – Pay close attention to package sizes
Just because two cans look alike it does not mean they are. Packaging can be deceptive, so get in the habit of comparing weights when shopping for canned fruits, vegetables and other items. Also take advantage of the lower prices available on store brand and generic products.

Step 7 – Use coupons, but do it wisely
Manufacturers coupons can be a great deal when used on products you already buy. Buying something simply because you have a coupon, however, is typically not a good idea.

Step 8 – Replace meat with beans and other less costly substitutes
Eating less meat and more beans and lentils is a good way to save money on your food budget while still getting the protein you and your family need. Try experimenting with some vegetarian recipes for interesting ways to use these non meat alternatives.

In addition to the tips listed above, there are several ways that smart shoppers keep their food budgets at a minimum while preparing delicious, nutritious meals for their family every day.

One trick is to keep the refrigerator and the pantry well stocked with staple foods. Keeping a good supply of staples on hand will avoid unnecessary trips to the store and also avoid the need to buy such products when they are not on sale. When staples such as bread, flour, peanut butter, canned vegetables, etc. are on sale, be sure to stock up.

It isn't something you can pick and choose to do one day and not the next-that is, not if you expect to see progress toward your goal. You do have a goal, don't you? If not, read the final tip here first. Below are several things you need to keep in mind if you are considering a frugal lifestyle.

1. Not every frugal idea is workable for everyone.
There is a balance between frugality and time that is unique for each person. Some people have time to grind their own wheat into flour and make their own pasta from scratch. Some people only have the time to do simple things. You don't have to use every idea you hear about.

2. Start saving your savings.
When you save money, you need to go ahead and put the money in a jar until you have enough to put it in the bank. If you save $20 on a shirt you didn't buy, put that $20 in your jar. If you save $1.59 on groceries, put that money in the jar. Many grocery stores receipts will even tell you how much you save. That makes it easier for you. Spending money you save in one place on something else is still spent money.

3. Set your goals and stick with them.
You have to have a reason to be frugal. Whether you want to get out of debt or go on a cruise, you have to have a goal. Don't just leave it vague. Write down the specific steps you are going to take. Look at your goal every day. Keep it at the forefront of your money thinking. When you consider whether or not you will buy something, look at how it affects your goal.

While we all enjoy a great celebration, we have had to scale back. Here are the things we do that still let us celebrate without going broke:

We go out to Lunch with our immediate family. Lunch costs much less than dinner and since we don't eat out very often it is a big treat. The typical choice is a Chinese Buffet close to us.

Invite the family over, but make sure they know you are only serving dessert. Same if it is a kids party.

Make cupcakes or your own cake instead of purchasing a decorated sheet cake. That alone saves us $15-18 dollars. Serve with ice cream and no one will care.

Don't forget the candles, but remember to keep them for the next birthday!

Buy small gifts. If your child wants a large gift, get some of the family to pitch in by giving money or gift cards.

Most of all, have fun!

Exchange homemade valentines and make cutout heart cookies together for dessert. Plan a special meal that everyone will love, set the table with your best dishes, get out the candles. Maybe even have everyone get dressed up! Kids love to be treated to out of the ordinary experiences, especially when they know it is a "grown up" tradition. Let everyone say something nice about a sibling or the family. Families experience love everyday, we just don't always talk about it! Celebrate your family!

Make sure your sale price is truly a sale price. Check around on line for typical pricing, even if you are going to shop at a local store.

Carry your coupons with you all the time, you never know when you might need them!

Stock up when groceries are a good deal. You probably already know what types of baking items you use for Thanksgiving and Christmas. Match up those sales ads and coupons for the best price, then hide them if you have to! Hershey kisses at a $1 per bag are a great deal, but not if the family eats them all before you bake.

Start making some double meals at dinner time and freeze one for those crazy December nights when every kid in the house needs to be at a different holiday event. Saves your nerves as well as money on pizza which is probably expensive.

Bottom Line, Save money by planning ahead. Then buy yourself something nice...

I love saving money on groceries.

The things I like most about Aldi are that the prices are very low, the quality is great and there is no need to comparison shop within the store because everything is their brand and comes in one size. You either buy it or you don't. That in itself saves alot of time.

Although they may have a few specials each week, for the most part things always cost the same making it easy to budget. Produce prices vary through the seasons just like every other store around, but they are still usually the cheapest. They do have a small packaged fresh meat case in our store, however, I do still choose to purchase my meat elsewhere. Personal choice, I'm sure it is just fine, I have bought ground beef there in a pinch.

I used to be an avid coupon shopper. Saving money on groceries was a major mission. Heck, I drove 45 minutes away to shop with double coupons before we had that ability in our neighborhood stores. I must admit I don't use so many coupons these days, but I still save lots of money. I have come out of Aldi with an overflowing cart around the holidays and still only spent $100. Not only did I save money, but I was in and out in about 30 minutes. I challenge you to do that at your chain grocery store.

Here are some examples of items I bought just last night:

chocolate chips $1.39
sour cream $0.99
yogurt cups $0.37
canned vegetables $0.49
spaghetti sauce 0.99
chewy granola bars $1.69
instant oatmeal $1.79
chicken noodle soup $0.49
flour tortillas $0.99

There have only been a couple of items over the years that I have chosen not to purchase again for one reason or another. They also have a money back guarantee if you aren't happy. My family prefers many of their items over name brands. Don't think they are like generic or poor quality store brands. Although you can't determine where their products are made, many appear exactly as their name brand counterparts.

So if saving money on groceries is your mission, buy a few items at Aldi and give them a try. If you decide you don't like it - don't go back! I have converted many of my friends to be Aldi fans. I do know that some of the stores in our area are a little nicer than others just based on location, so know the area where you are going. Ours is extremely clean and well stocked. Hopefully you will be pleasantly surprised and can save even more money on your groceries! I must add as a last comment that they don't carry everything you might need to buy and I do purchase some items elsewhere or at a really great sale price.

Read more about the Aldi stores on their website. They have a great shopping planner and recipe site also at www.aldimeals.com .

There are many places to go and things to do while there that won't require you to sacrifice fun due to lack of money. There is a vacation for every budget.

Start by opening a seperate savings account just for your vacation savings. If you have direct deposit, you can usually have money put into more than one account so check with your employer. Some banks will do an automatic transfer to your savings account. Do it manually if you must, but just do it!

Take a look at some ways your family is willing to cutback in order to save for the vacation fund. Maybe you eat out one or two times less per month. Stay home and have a family game night instead of going out to a movie. Be sure not to deprive yourselves of fun entertainment during the saving process or everyone will become resentful of the "fund".

Create a "Vacation Jar" where everyone in the family can put their change. It is amazing how quickly that can add up and gives an additional bonus of letting the kids see the savings develop. Be sure to let them help count it when the time comes. Even if it doesn't end up being much, look at it as spending money you wouldn't have had.

Think of other ways to create sources of money for your vacation - maybe collect aluminum cans for recycling or have a garage sale and not only reap the benefits of the cash but get rid of some unnecessary clutter at the same time. Think outside the box for other ways your family can work together to achieve your family vacation goal.

So get started today with a vacation savings plan. Vacation memories are precious and last a lifetime. There is no dollar value that can represent families making memories together.

Do you have an old refrigerator in your garage or basement, maybe a hand-me-down from the kitchen? These older refrigerators may still run, but can consume twice the amount of energy of a new energy-efficient model. You may be spending as much as $125 a year to keep a few sodas or beers cold and that's not very frugal!

If your extra refrigerator is regularly stocked with food, replacing it with a new Energy Star®-qualified refrigerator is an option to consider. You'll still save up to $275 over the next five years, plus you'll get better performance. New Energy Star- qualified refrigerators are available in a variety of sizes and price points, so you don't need to buy anything extravagant (some companies make refrigerators designed just for the garage). It may even qualify for a tax credit.

If your extra refrigerator tends to be empty, or home to just a few batteries, stale sodas or mystery containers of food, you should probably get rid of it altogether. If giving up your second refrigerator causes too much angst, consider opting for a smaller compact fridge. These units are smaller than a regular refrigerator but can still hold extra sodas and other small items. They also use only a fraction of the energy of a full-size model. Look for one that has earned the Energy Star and save up to $80 per year.

If you only need that extra refirigerator at holidays, you may find it better to keep the old model but only plug it in when it is needed. Leaving the old refrigerator unplugged for 10 months of the year can save as much as $105.

So reconsider if that extra refrigerator is really saving you any money at all. Is there an energy hog feeding in your basement or garage?

Ask if your store offers a Layaway program. Layaway purchase plans are designed for customers who want to buy merchandise without using credit or paying the full price immediately.

Layaways are not credit purchases. When you buy an item with a credit card, you take the merchandise home with you. When you use layaway, you typically make a deposit — usually a percentage of the purchase price — and pay over time until you have paid for the item in full. In exchange, the retailer holds the merchandise for you.

Get the store’s layaway policy in writing to avoid any potential future problems. The Policy should include:

1) The terms of the layaway plan:

How much time you have to pay for the items

Due dates for payments

The minimum payment required

Any possible charges for using the plan, is there a service fee?

Any fee or a penalty for missed or late payments. Will your contract be cancelled? Will the merchandise be returned to the sales floor?

2) The refund policy:

Is a refund granted?

Is there a non-refundable service fee?

Is the refund in cash or store credit?

Your goals for the holidays should be to be to pay cash and stick to your budget. In return, you can look back on the holidays with a smile on your face in January instead of stressing over how to pay those credit card bills!

Install a programmable thermostat to keep your house comfortably warm in the winter and comfortably cool in the summer.

Use compact fluorescent light bulbs with the ENERGY STAR® label.

Air dry dishes instead of using your dishwasher's drying cycle.

Turn off your computer and monitor when not in use.

Plug home electronics, such as TVs and DVD players, into power strips; turn the power strips off when the equipment is not in use (TVs and DVDs in standby mode still use several watts of power).

Lower the thermostat on your hot water heater to 120°F.

Take short showers instead of baths.

Wash only full loads of dishes and clothes.

Drive sensibly. Aggressive driving (speeding, rapid acceleration and braking) wastes gasoline.

Look for the ENERGY STAR label on home appliances and products. ENERGY STAR products meet strict efficiency guidelines set by the U.S. Department of Energy and the Environmental Protection Agency.

Planning ahead will help keep you from spending money you don't have and in turn cause you to put some extra thought into those gifts.

Start with a Budget and then stick to it! Decide how much cash you will have to spend for the holidays including amounts for gifts, baked goods, decorations, etc. The problem with most people is that they find making a budget relatively easy but sticking to it is the really hard part. If you aren't setting money aside year round, then you need to look at where those funds are going to come from. Refrain from using those credit cards, they cause unplanned purchases usually over the amounts budgeted.

Everybody wants to give gifts because that is what the holiday season calls for. However, it does not mean that you have to spend more than what you can afford. Spending outside your means will definitely bring more problems than you can afford to solve come January.

Personalize it! As the saying goes, it is the thought that counts. Hence, there are no better ways to show how much you have thought of those people this holiday season than making homemade gifts.

Begin comparison shopping. It really pays to shop around. Spending a little time online comparison shopping will help you know how much you should be paying for an item. How will you know if that "sale" is really a good bargain?

Shopping for the holidays can be fun, but you don’t have to be spendthrift. You will be much less stressed if you know you are not wasting money!

Making a budget is basically making a money plan for both spending and saving. By outlining a budget you will be able to watch income, set and achieve your financial objectives, and make informed decisions in advance as to how you want to spend your money.

Budgeting helps you to put aside a certain amount of money for expected as well as unexpected costs.
In other words, budgeting means estimating monthly home expenses based on previous known expenses and bills.

The initial step to take in budgeting is to find out how long will your income will last. List fixed expenses like car payments, home rental or mortgage, insurance, etc. Then, follow up your spending for a month so you can discover and understand where your funds are going. By identifying your “spending patterns”, you can immediately identify solutions for effective budgeting.

For example, if you have a steady monthly income of $4,000, you should subtract all your identified monthly bills from that income. Other bills can be assessed and then subtracted from the amount of your income. The balance that remained after fixed costs can now be your budget in the household. Rather than allocating money for miscellaneous like gas, clothing, entertainment and groceries, financial planning will allow you instead to use proportions or percentages of it.

The strategic solution in order for budgeting to be successful is inflexibility as well as flexibility; there are fixed expenses so payment must be an inflexible factor. Remember, budgeting is intended to identify goals and plans, then following through by living within the plan .

Four tips on how to budget:

1. Have good sense of money management. Reach an agreement within your household and be sure everyone knows the significance of reducing spending; it may involve a lot of sacrifice.

2. Plan your situation. Be able to make a list of your earnings on one side and your expenses on the other side.

3. Know the difference between wants and needs. Make a list of your "wants" and then cross off half the list. Those are the items you will need to "plan" to purchase.

4. Live frugally, but within reason . There are many ways to have fun with little or no spending at all. Spend the day the beach or park with the kids rather than going shopping.

Budgeting is an effective and fundamental tool that is readily available to everyone. Make good use of it to get a handle on your finances.

All this fashion comes at a price — you choose.
Buying clothes these days is always a choice between the designer-made outfit or those cheap but quality items that you could pull together and express your personality in many different ways.
Most experts contend that clothes can definitely make or break a person. They say that your personality is usually reflected on how you dress up. But it does not necessarily mean that good fashion would absolutely mean expensive clothes.
Hence, you can still make a remarkable fashion statement without having to spend hundreds or even thousands of dollars just for your clothes.
Here is a list of some money-saving tips when buying clothes that would turn other people’s heads to you but would not definitely break your wallet.
1. Do the math
Choosing fashionable clothes can be really tricky, not unless you know how to do the math! So before you buy three sets of clothes that would cost you hundreds of dollars, try to go for the budget-friendly dozen of items that you can even match alternatively.
The number of expensive items that your money can buy is definitely doubled or even tripled when you buy cheaper ones but can still make a good fashion statement.
2. Know what you want
Saving money is definitely based on knowing what you want whenever you spend your money on something. If you know what you want, this means that you have researched the item, have compared them with the other items, you will be able to come up with the lowest price of the product.
3. Drive your way to a “thrift store”
Usually, these “thrift stores” are non-profit organizations. This means that they are usually operating for charity. They give their proceeds to some charitable institutions.
Hence, the prices of the clothes being sold in the thrift store are absolutely cheaper than the ones being sold in the department store. So that would mean many savings for you.
Best of all, you do not only get to save more money, you get to do some charity work as well.
The bottom line here is that when shopping for clothes, do not shop for the brand name, shop for the quality.
Nowadays, you just have to be practical. Better spend your money on more important things than those designer clothes.

Here are ten practical tips that you can do to begin saving money, without changing your lifestyle.

1. Replace incandescent bulbs with compact fluorescent (CFL) bulbs. CFL bulbs consume 80% less energy than incandescent bulbs, but give the same illumination. Make sure to buy only lamps and bulbs that have the Energy Star rating to ensure quality compliance.

2. Make a list when going to the grocery and stick to it! Anything that is not on the list is not a “need”, but merely a “want” so avoid busting your pockets for unnecessary items. Buy non-perishable consumables in bulk to benefit from bulk discounts.

3. Use coupons when available. Take the time and have the patience to clip and organize grocery coupons. When added together, savings from using all coupons in one grocery trip can be as much as $20-$30. Purchase dining and shopping coupons online and print them at home. Doing so can save you at least 50% on the face value of the coupons.

4. Buy online, whenever possible. Online stores pass their savings from rental costs and warehousing to the online consumer, thus they can afford as much as 70% off their rack price. When buying items online, Google it first together with the word, “discount code”. This can give you further reductions on the item you want to purchase. Try also online bidding: they offer at least 75% off the original purchase price, for practically new (slightly used!) items.

5. Take lunch to work. Buy potato chips and soda from the grocery and make a homemade sandwich and pack them in a brown bag.

6. Eat homemade dinners as often as possible. Plan menus that are practical and easy-to-cook to encourage eating at home. Save money by dining out only on special occasions.

7. Use everyday pantry items for skin and body care. Cucumbers, honey, milk, lemon, salt and baking soda are some items in your home that can also be used to take care of your skin.

8. Avoid shopping to de-stress. Try walking around the park or watching a movie instead.

9. Bring your own sodas and snacks when watching a movie. The cost of sodas and snacks are at least 25% higher in movie houses. Plus, homemade popcorn tastes much better: you can put on all the salt and butter you want!

10. Pay off your credit card balances each month and avoid finance charges. Better yet, use cash as much as possible, unless using plastic will give you a better deal (0% interest on appliance purchases, or cash rebates).
