In a very uncharacteristic bout of selfless sewing, I made this sweatshirt as a birthday present for my friend Chiara. She is the epitome of “outdoorsiness” so I figured a Linden would be perfect for her. I wanted a strong color (she needs to be “visible” when guiding people down some mountain trail) but all I could find in the shops that I visited was black, grey and white (sigh). It’s a very soft very stretchy (bi-stretch actually) 96% CO, 4% EA fleece therefore I bought white thinking I could dye it. The color I used is called Tulip Red - from Coloreria Italiana. I know, it’s not the most eco-friendly thing in the world to use but it was my only option - sigh again.

I cut a size 4 with no fitting modifications whatsoever. I intended it to be a surprise gift and I could not ask my friend to come in for fitting. Actually this is one of the reasons I chose the Linden. I know the work of Jen from Grainline Studio to be very close to the high-end industrial standards and I expected the fit to be good as is.

The main concern I had making this sweatshirt was avoiding those ripply, stretched seams that I abhor and were a real possibility given the stretchiness of the fabric and the on bias seam of the raglan sleeve. I closed the seams with my overlocker and then topstitched with my sewing machine and a decorative stretch stitch (number 14 on my Bernina). During the execution of this stitch the feed dogs go back and forth and can stretch the fabric so I used the walking foot and had to fiddle quite a bit with the presser foot pressure (thank god for that option).

Adding contrast trims was a stylistic decision that posed it’s own set of problems: of course I had no suitable ribbing (the one I did have was rather thick and stiff and using it would have resulted in really bulky seams). I used instead some equally stretchy grey sweatshirt fleece on crosswise direction.

I tried a different approach to constructing this sweatshirt. I first closed the raglan seams and topstitched them. I attached the unfolded bands (I did widened them by 1in. total at the neck and 2in. total at hem and cuffs - if memory serves correctly) - fold line pressed. I then joined the side seams and topstitched at the base of the collar band, hem and cuffs catching the open edge under the serged seam allowances. This method reduced bulk by one layer but required lots of pins and curse words.
I knew that not using ribbing at the neck meant possible deformation with wear resulting in one of those highly unaesthetic collar bands that flare and gape and would not lie flat so I reinforced the top of the band with clear elastic. It is sewn on the inside along the fold line. The triangle it is not only a decoration but also reinforces the front of the neckline that as we know, tends to stretch out of shape. What IS a mostly decorative element … is the drawstring a bit a là dsquared.

This post is called Linden #1 because I anticipate a Linden #2, #3 …. #n in my wardrobe.
I love sweatshirts. This Linden came together beautifully in about 5 hours and I am a really relaxed sewer. I like to take my time and enjoy the process (of course I maybe would have enjoyed it a bit more if it was for myself ;), although I got to wear it to take the pictures - I am such a selfish one).

Lo so, suona strano detto da me … ma ho cucito qualcosa per qualcun’altra!!! - la mia amica, Chiara. Essendo Chiara l’icona della vita all’aperto ho pensato che una felpa Linden sarebbe stata perfetta per lei. Ho voluto un colore acceso, che fosse ben visibile quando accompagna gruppi sui sentieri di montagna. Sfortunatamente nei negozi tutto quello che ho trovato era nero, grigio o bianco. Ho scelto una felpa molto elastica (anzi bi-elastica), 96% CO, 4%EA bianca, pensando di tingerla. Per la tintura ho usato il Rosso Tulipano della Coloreria Italiana - lo so no è una scelta veramente eco-friendly ma unica mia opzione. Conoscete per caso modi migliori per tingere tessuto in casa?

Ho tagliato una misura 4 e non ho fato alcuna modifica/alterazione. Per un regalo sorpresa non poi veramente chiamare a prove. Ed è questa un’altra ragione per la quale ho scelto il Linden. So che il lavoro di Jen di Grainline Studio è molto vicino agli standard sartoriali industriali di alto livello perciò mi aspettavo una buona vestibilità senza modifiche.

La mia preoccupazione principale durante il confezionamento è stata di evitare le cuciture tirate che producono quelle onde che detesto - una vera possibilità considerando l’elasticità del tessuto e della cucitura sullo sbieco delle maniche raglan. Ho assemblato con la tagliacuci e poi ho fatto le impunture con la machina da cucire e un punto elastico decorativo (numero 14 della mia Bernina). Durante l’esecuzione di questo punto le griffe di trasporto vanno avanti e indietro e possono tirare il tessuto dunque ho usato un piedino doppio trasporto e regolato la pressione del piedino (svariati tentativi) - grazie a Dio la mia machina da la possibilità.

Aggiungere le finiture a contrasto è stata una decisione di styling che ha posto un set di problemi tutto suo. Ovviamente non avevo il bordo a costine adatto ma uno troppo spesso e troppo rigido che avrebbe reso le cuciture troppo pesanti. Ho usato invece, della felpa grigia ugualmente elastica in direzione trasversale.

Ho voluto provare un metodo di confezionamento un po' diverso. Prima ho chiuso il raglan e ho fatto le impunture. Ho aggiunto i bordini non piegati - (li ho allargati di 2.5cm totali al collo e 5cm totali a polsi e fondo - se mi ricordo bene) - dopo aver precedentemente creato la linea di piegatura con il ferro da stiro. Ho eseguito le cuciture laterali e poi le impunture dei bordi prendendo dentro, sotto i margini fatti con la tagliacuci anche i margini liberi delle finiture. Ho ridotto così l’ingombro di un strato ma ho sprecato tante parolacce e spilli.
Sapevo che non usando le costine attorno al collo, c’era la possibilità che portando la felpa lo scollo perdesse elasticità e si sformasse in quel modo odioso e non stesse più piatto. Per ovviare ho cucito dentro il collo, elastico in silicone trasparente. Il triangolo non e soltanto un elemento decorativo ma serve anche da rinforzo per lo scollo. Il cordoncino a là dsquared invece è puramente decorativo.

Questo post si chiama Linden #1 perché prevedo la nascita di un Linden #2, #3 … #n.
Adoro le felpe e questa si e praticamente confezionata da sola, senza nessun intoppo in circa 5 ore - ed io sono molto rilassata quando cucio. Mi piace andare piano e godermi il processo (forse avrei goduto un po di più se la felpa fosse rimasta nel mio armadio ;) anche se l’ho indossata poi per le foto - ahhhh penso solo a me stessa).
E voi? Quando cucite vi piace prendervela con calma oppure vi sale quella sorta di delirio che ti spinge a voler vedere il progetto compiuto il prima possibile?

A Could-be-Neoprene Long Jacket

What is neoprene anyway?
It's a synthetic rubber. In its non-foam form is very elastic and as a foam laminated onto knit jersey offers good insulation. The laminated neoprene is usually the one used by the apparel industry and comes in various thicknesses: 1.5, 3 and 6 mm being the most common especially in sports gear like diving dry and wet suits. Because my fiancé owns a couple of said suits I got to study the fabric and figured it should be interesting enough as a long jacket. So with the 3mm sample at hand I begun drawing one. Because of its nature, neoprene does not press so it had to be without darts yet I wasn't ready to go for the boxy cut. It had to have some shaping. Princess seams were the obvious choice - topstitching was the next, in order to force the seams to lay flat.. Being my first time with such a fabric I wanted to keep things fairly simple - avoid layering and no complex closures and collars. The two piece sleeve was the exception to the keep-it-simple thing. I think a rigid material sort of requires a two piece sleeve. Finally I chose the empire waist silhouette because ... well ... I like it.

The good
I love the colour ... This acid green shade was the main selling point for this fabric I got from Supercut. I like the silhouette - I think I achieved a good balance between sporty and cute. And lastly allow me to pat myself on the back for drafting the sleeve. My first time drafting a two piece sleeve and I did a bang up job if I may say so.

The bad
Not all neoprenes are equal. Little did I know some neoprenes are not neoprenes but neoprene lookalikes. This one is more of a bonded jersey. Maybe the bonding was done using an almost invisible layer of neoprene or maybe it's another bonding agent… I do not know. Fact is there is no elasticity. If you pull the fabric you will literally hear the bonding layer crack and the fabric will deform - zero recovery. It is also very thin so it required interfacing... I should have used a heavy non stretch fusible interface (to avoid the above deforming) but I didn't. Why? Momentary lapse in judgement. What about insulation you say. None. Wind will pass right through it. I did not try water... I'm afraid to. To make it a little warmer I thought of using polar fleece as lining ... and because it's polar fleece why not go color crazy !?. In theory using polar fleece is an ok idea; in practice in this case, it needed a stiffer shell. The problem is that it hangs on the clothes and interferes a little too much with the drape in movement.

Looking back now I think the fabric would have been better suited for a mid-layer kind of garment like a cardigan or something.

The pictures

I must admit for a while there I considered taking it all apart, re-interfacing it and maybe changing the lining but this time in my personal internal battle between laziness and OCD ... laziness won. I had also a small push from some of the gals at the Italian Sewing Meet-up (btw fantastic experience!!!) ... they convinced me it would be difficult and messy. Meanwhile I've been wearing it (for the past almost two months now - it is light and comfy and easy to carry around in trains for instance) and the window I had to modify it closed on me. I'm thinking when I'll get my hands on some sports grade neoprene I'll just remake this ... or maybe not.
What would you do?

As per my usual I'm including the pattern I used; again for scientific reasons. It's the draft of the shell with no seam allowances included. Use with caution... it is not a standard size but fitted to my body. You will be able to download it until my next post.... whenever that may be as lately I've been incredibly busy with school and work and some other general life stuff.

Giacca in Neoprene(adiacente)

Cos'è il neoprene comunque?
E’ una gomma sintetica. Nella sua forma colata è molto elastica mentre come schiuma laminata su maglia è un ottimo isolante. L'industria tessile impiega solitamente il neoprene laminato sopratutto nei spessori 1.5, 3 e 6mm: i più comunemente usati per l'abbigliamento/attrezzatura sportiva come le mute da sub. Visto che il mio fidanzato ne possiede un paio ho avuto la possibilità di guardare bene, tirare, piegare il tessuto/materiale e concluso che si mi piacerebbe una giacca. Con il campione da 3mm in mano ho preso a disegnarne una. Per sua natura il neoprene non si stira perciò niente riprese. Non volendo un taglio squadrato la scelta ovvia è stata il taglio princesse. Per appiattire le cuciture ho scelto di impuntare tutto … o comunque il possibile. Dato che era la prima volta che utilizzavo tale materiale, il piano era di provare a semplificare il più possibile le cose - evitare spessori eccessivi e niente chiusure o colletti complessi. La manica a due pezzi è stata l'eccezione forzata diciamo. Penso che un tessuto rigido richieda solitamente una manica a due pezzi. Finalmente ho scelto la silhouette impero ... perché è una tra le mie preferite.

Il colore ... questo verde acido è stato la ragione principale per la quale ho acquistato questo tessuto da Supercut. Mi piace anche la silhouette - penso di aver trovato un buon rapporto tra sportivo e carino. Per finire permettetemi di darmi da sola una pacca sulla spalla per il progetto della manica. Questo è stato il mio primo progetto di manica a due pezzi e penso di aver fatto un ottimo lavoro - se posso dirlo.

Non mi piace
Non tutto il neoprene è uguale. Poco ne sapevo ma alcuni tessuti neoprene non sono neoprene ma sembrano neoprene. Questo qui è più un accoppiato in jersey. Forse il collante è uno strato sottilissimo di neoprene o forse qualcos’altro, non lo so. Il fatto è che che non c’è elasticità. Se lo si tira si può letteralmente sentire lo strato di collante crepare ed il tessuto subirà una deformazione permanente. E’ anche molto sottile quindi ho dovuto usare della fliselina per provare a irrigidirlo e stabilizzarlo … La ragione per la quale ho usato una fliselina elastica sinceramente mi sfugge … devo aver avuto spento il cervello. Per quel che riguarda l’isolamento … beh … non c’e isolamento. Il vento ci passa a traverso come se niente fosse. Per farla diventare un po più calda ho usato una fodera in pile … e visto che parliamo di pile perché non sbizzarrirsi con il colore!? In teoria utilizzare del pile all’interno è un’idea ok ma in questo caso e visto che il tessuto della scocca non è molto rigido, la fodera attaccandosi ai vestiti sotto interferisce con il drappeggio sopratutto in movimento.

In retrospettiva penso questo tessuto sarebbe stato meglio adatto per uno strato intermedio tipo un cardigan o qualcos’altro.

Le foto

Devo ammettere che per un pezzo ho preso in considerazione l’idea di smontare tutto riattaccare della fliselina rigida e rifoderare con un altro tipo di tessuto magari, ma in questo caso, nella mia personale battaglia interna tra DOC (intesso come disturbo ossessivo-compulsivo) e pigrizia ha vinto la pigrizia. Ho avuto anche un piccolo aiutino a decidere da parte di alcune tra le ragazze all’Incontro di Cucito (a proposito, fantastica esperienza!!!) che mi hanno suggerito che sarebbe stato un lavoraccio con dubbi risultati poi. Nel fra tempo e negli ultimi due mesi all’incirca l’ho comunque indossata parecchio - è leggera, confortevole e facile da portare in giro sul treno per esempio - e la finestra che avevo per modificarla penso si sia chiusa. Forse un giorno quando sarò riuscita a mettere le mani su del neoprene neoprene come quello delle mute la rifarò semplicemente … o forse no.
Voi cosa fareste?

Come al solito includo il cartamodello che ho usato; come sempre per ragioni scientifiche. E’ la bozza (il draft) della scocca senza margini di cucitura. Usare con cautela … non è una misura standard ma è adattata al mio corpo. Potrà essere scaricato fino alla pubblicazione del mio prossimo post - una settimana, un mese chissà … ultimamente sono stata super impegnata tra scuola, lavoro e vita in generale.

I’m wearing a top hat to distract you from the badly matching lines and the moiré!

This is the Deer&Doe Bruyère Shirt in a mishmash of sizes and bearing so many alterations that the original pattern got buried so deep it would take a shovel to dig it out. Why? Because the way my body is built is soooooo far away from the Deer&Doe “standard”. This pattern is not a generic one and when I say generic I mean based on some generic block like the ones straight out of the pattern cutting books. This pattern has been fitted to a specific body type and I think this proves its “originality” - and lately has been some talk about the originality of independent patterns.

Still… I love the design of the Bruyère so much that I went ahead and ploughed my way through a bust adjustment from the original D cup to my almost B cup (through both bust darts). I lengthened a lot the bodice - when Eléonore, the designer, says 168cm height it IS 168cm height. As a base size I cut the a 36. Although I cut the neckline at a 34 I had to reduce it further by 1cm - and it’s still not enough. I like to be able to close my shirts to the last button if I feel like.

I added ca. 1cm to the shoulder length also and about 1.5 cm to the sleeve cap. Because I have no intention of wearing this shirt to do manual labour or run track I reduced the ease at the back a lot and I mean a lot. The same with the bicep girth and I also raised the armhole. Yeah I know I had to do quite a bit but this is how much I love the design.

The fabric is a small houndstooth in a slightly stretchy wool blend. Not much but enough to complicate things especially when time came to assemble the belt and the button placket.
The first placket I made I did not pay very much attention to the fabric pattern and I ended up with two adjacent black lines - very disturbing visually and some vertical shifting. I knew then I had to do it by hand. So I got comfortable turned the tv on, took a deep breath and started doing one of the things I like less: hand sewing. The second placket was alright but I did not like the buttons. Decided that I wanted a less intrusive closure - if possible invisible. For the third I used sew on snaps. It resulted too bulky with the thickness of the snaps and there was also some gapping. It just wouldn’t lie flat! For the final one I crossed my fingers and used sew in snaps. This instagram pic demonstrates the construction. If you want to know more just ask :) !

I am pleased with the result although as you can see the back is still to long.
I’m sorry we had really bad weather lately and I couldn't photograph it outside and the inside pictures are not at all good - they don’t do it justice.
btw I am wearing my latest (i. e. second ;) pair of Ginger Jeans!

And because here in Italy American Horror Story: Freak Show is about to premiere I leave you with my creepiest grin ad also with the proof the neckline opening is still too big.

Bruyère

Sto indossando un cilindro nel vano tentativo di distogliere la vostra attenzione dalle linee che combaciano male e dalla moiré nelle foto!

Questa è la Camicia Bruyère di Deer&Doe in un mix di taglie e con sopra talmente tante alterazioni che per scovare il cartamodello originale servirebbe una pala. Perché? Perché la mia corporatura è moooolto diversa dallo "standard" Deer&Doe. Questo cartamodello non è uno generico e quando dico generico intendo basato su qualche blocco base generico come quelli nei libri di modellistica. Questo cartamodello è stato adattato per una corporatura ben precisa e penso questo ne provi la "originalità" - ultimamente ci sono state un po' di discussioni sull'originalità dei cartamodelli indipendenti.

Nonostante le differenze in conformazione tra me è la modella di Deer&Doe il design di questo cartamodello mi piaceva (e mi piace) così tanto che ho deciso di affrontare tutte le modifiche da fare. Anzitutto ridurre il busto da una coppa D a una quasi B. Ho dovuto inoltre allungare di parecchio il corpetto - quando Eléonore, la designer, dice 168cm di altezza, sono 168 cm di altezza. Come misura base ho tagliato una 36. Anche se lo scollo l'ho tagliato in misura 34 l'ho comunque dovuto ridurre ancora di c. 1cm ed ancora non basta. Mi piace poter indossare le mie camicie abbottonate fino all'ultimo bottone se mi va.

Ho aggiunto 1cm alla lunghezza spalla e 1,5cm al colmo manica. Perché non ho alcuna intenzione di indossare questa camicia per fare lavori di manovalanza o per andare a correre ho ridotto la vestibilità nella schiena di c. 3cm. Lo stesso per la manica all'altezza bicipite. Ho anche alzato l'incavo. Si lo so ho dovuto fare parecchie modifiche - così tanto mi piace questo design.

Il tessuto è un pied-de-poule piccolo in un misto lana un po' elasticizzato. Non molto, quanto basta per complicare le cose quando si è trattato di confezionare la cintura ed il cannoncino.
Quando ho cucito il primo cannoncino non sono stata particolarmente attenta alla distribuzione delle linee perciò sono finita con due linee nere adiacenti - visivamente molto fastidioso, e qualche slittamento verticale del pattern. Ho capito che lo dovevo farlo a mano. Mi sono mesa comoda, ho acceso la Tv, fatto un bel respiro ed iniziato con la cosa che meno mi piace in assoluto: cucire a mano. Il secondo cannoncino e venuto ok ma non mi piacevano i bottoni. Ho deciso che preferivo una chiusura con un minore impatto, possibilmente invisibile. Per il terzo perciò ho usato dei bottoni a pressione del tipo "sew on" che però creavano troppo spessore. Dunque arriviamo al quarto cannoncino per il quale ho utilizzato sempre dei bottoni a pressione sta volta del tipo "sew in" . Questa immagine instagram ne dimostra la costruzione. Se avete delle altre domande chiedete :) !

Sono contenta del risultato anche se come si puo vedere la schiena e ancora troppo lunga.
Mi dispiace se a causa del maltempo, che i giorni passati si è abbattuto sulla mia zona, non sono riuscita a fotografarla fuori è le immagini in interno non sono chissà che.

Visto che in Italia American Horror Story: Freak Show andrà in prima questi giorni, vi lascio con il mio più raccapricciante sogghigno e la prova che lo scollo è ancora troppo grande.

A Bottom-up(ish) Pair of Gingers

A Bottom-up(ish) Pair of Gingers

I've made jeans! I've made jeans! I've made jeans!

Fabric:
The awful denim I've made these in is one of the fabrics part of my #badfabricspledge. Before washing, was thin and quite stiff, without an apparent texture (looked waxed somehow) and dark grey blue in color. Then I washed it. Terrible. Lost all body, sheen and discoloured in long streaks. I had to dye it twice to get an uniform coloration - environmental impact: 1000!

Pattern&Fitting:
The pattern is the Ginger Jeans pattern by Closet Case Files. It includes two versions a low waist stovepipe leg and a high waist skinny leg. I cut this last one in a size 10. It's the size that gives the finished garment measurements around the same size as my actual hips and not knowing how stretch my denim really was I wanted to have enough fabric to be able to fit them without unnecessary headaches. I also added 2 cm to the crotch seam allowance. I basted them, put them on, pinned the excess fabric at crotch, inseam and at the sides, then modified the pattern and trimmed away the excess fabric at the edges. Overall I think I downgraded to about a size 4 but I left the lower leg a size 10.

What's up with the yoke?
Here comes the bottom-up part.
Bottom-up is a line developed by Liu Jo. It's a "process" consisting in the use of an inverted yoke and a hip dart and it's supposed to give “better” fit and shaping (especially to those of us not sporting much booty). I do not own a pair of their jeans but the construction scheme is common knowledge so I figured I should try it. My results are not perfect and I need to refine the whole thing - for instance I think I'll have to raise the center back some more; only did it for 1 cm and it’s not enough. I want the yoke line to be more curve. I Intend to publish sooner rather than later more on the yoke whys and hows but the highlights are: invert the yoke piece left to right, create a hip dart to compensate for the extra side length, fix/redraw/true the waistline whatever works for you. In theory the whole thing is a bit more complex but this is the quick and dirty hack version.
I also lowered the total rise resulting in a mid-rise version.

Side-by-side comparison with a very popular, average priced RTW brand I will not name pair of jeans. I chose the pair with the most similar fit and feel.

The Good:
“Me: What do you think?
Him: I think you should keep it…
Me: What?!
Him: The ass… “
I guess the above dialog sums it all up pretty well.

The Bad:
Where do I start?!
The fabric, besides not being a very nice fabric has no stretch recovery that you can speak of. You get out in the morning wearing a pair of skinny jeans and get back in the evening wearing classic jodhpurs. I think this lack of stretch recovery is also the main reason behind the drag lines around the knee and at the back of the leg - will see with the next pair.
The stitching quite frankly sucks. I had the bad idea to use a triple stitch to do the topstitching (although my sewing machine works with common jeans thread just fine) and had to use the walking foot to avoid stretching and shifting. BTW the Bernina walking foot is huge. If you think sewing curved lines with this settings might be at least annoying try to imagine sewing parallel curved lines. With all of my 5 minutes long sewing experience. Yep. Tough. Never again….
The back pockets - waaay too low!
The front closure needs improving. Looks just like the RTW but I am not making RTW. RTW I can buy!!!

The Buttom-up thing (watch the Liu Jo promo here) does not a bigger derrière make. It redistributes volumes: from a pear (flatter) tush towards an apple shaped one. The fact that it seems to appear bigger in some pictures is due mainly to my fiancee (straight male) being forced behind the camera. He kept zooming on the thing - let’s call it a psycho-optical-illusion ;) .

Ginger (quasi) Bottom-up Jeans

Ho cucito jeans! Ho cucito jeans! Ho cucito jeans!

Tessuto:
Il denim terribile che ho utilizzato faceva parte del mio impegno #badfabricspledge. Perché dico terribile?! Prima di lavarlo era sottile, abbastanza rigido, di un colore blu grigio scuro e senza una texture apparente - sembrava quasi cerato. Dopo il lavaggio ha perso tutto il corpo, la lucentezza ed è stinto a lunghe righe (nervature). Ho dovuto tingerlo due volte per rendere il colore uniforme. La Coloreria:1 - Ambiente:-1000!

Cartamodello e Adattamento:
Il C.M. è il Ginger Jeans di Closet Case Files (in inglese). Include due versioni: una a vita bassa e gamba dritta e una skinny a vita alta. Ho tagliato la taglia 10 di quest’ultima. E’ la taglia che da una circonferenza fianchi del capo finito quasi pari alla misura reale dei miei fianchi. Come sapevo di doverlo adattare e non sapevo quanto elastico fosse il mio denim ho pensato tagliarlo più grande una buona idea. Meglio tenersi larghi! Inoltre ho anche aggiunto 2 cm in più ai margini di cucitura già inclusi nella zona cavallo. Li ho imbastiti, indossati e impuntato l’eccesso di tessuto nella zona cavallo, interno gamba e ai lati. Ho modificato il C.M. e rifilato i bordi dei miei pezzi. In tutto penso di essere scesa fino alla taglia 4 circa ma ho lasciato la gamba (dal ginocchio in giù) misura 10.

Modifiche:
Cosa succede con la baschina dietro?
Questa è la parte che riguarda il Bottom-up.
Il Bottom-up e un linea sviluppata dalla Liu Jo. E’ un “processo” che consiste nel impiego di una baschina invertita e di una ripresa sul fianco e vuole dare “migliore” vestibilità e forma. Non possiedo un paio dei loro jeans ma lo schema costruttivo è semplice perciò ho pensato: perché non provare! Il risultato non è perfetto e devo lavorarci ancora - per esempio dovrei penso allungare ancora la linea del centro dietro, l’ho allungata solo di 1cm e non basta. Vorrei dare più curvatura alla linea della baschina. Scriverò più in la un’articolo più dettagliato sul perché e come ma per il momento posso dirvi che in sostanza ho invertito la baschina destra-sinistra, ho formato una ripresa sul fianco per compensare la lunghezza laterale e ho sistemato/ridisegnato la linea vita. In teoria il tutto è più complesso ma questo è un “hack” veloce.
Ho anche abbassato un po' la vita.

Comparazione fianco a fianco con un paio di jeans RTW di una nota marca che non nominerò. Ho scelto il paio che meglio si assomigliava dal punto di vista della vestibilità e del aspetto.

Penso questo piccolo dialogo riassume abbastanza bene la cosa.

Non mi piace:
Da dove comincio?!
Il tessuto, oltre a essere non molto bello, non ha una buona ripresa elastica, anzi. Esci la mattina indossando un paio di jeans skinny e torni la sera in un paio di pantaloni classici da cavallerizza. Credo che questa mancanza di ripresa elastica sia anche il motivo dietro tutte quelle pieghe attorno al ginocchio e dietro gamba - vedremmo il prossimo paio.
Le cuciture non sono affatto belle. Ho avuto la pessima idea di utilizzare un punto triplo per fare le impunture (anche se la mia macchina non ha nessun problema a cucire con il filo per jeans) e un piedino a doppio trasporto per evitare deformazioni. A proposito: il piedino doppio trasporto della Bernina è enorme. Se pensate che con queste impostazioni cucire linee curve sia fastidioso immaginatevi cucire linee curve parallele! Con i miei 5 minuti di esperienza nel cucito. Dura. Mai più …
Le tasche dietro sono troooopo in basso!
La chiusura davanti ha bisogno di essere sistemata meglio. Lo so che sembra uguale a quella del RTW ma io non sto producendo RTW. L’RTW lo posso comprare!

Un Corso Craftsy: Cucire Jeans di Designer con Angela Wolf. L’ho guardato un po di tempo fa quando ho cucito la mia Salopette Turia. Mi piace la sua sequenza di costruzione ed altre piccole cose come cucire le tasche dietro dopo aver impuntato la linea centrale dietro, per poterle piazzare a distanza uguale dall’impuntura.

Ps. Attraverso tecniche complesse sono riuscita a registrare i pensieri di Eli (il labrador):

The Intended New Year’s Eve Dress

Why intended? Because I never wore it :(. I was running a fever and went with a flannel shirt, sweater and jeans. Yay!

The story of this dress starts with me wanting to buy a piece of this 3D flowers print silk crêpe from Supercut, getting there too late and having to settle for just one meter.
What to do with one meter of silk crêpe?
I looked for patterns to use and when I couldn’t find one that I liked and was suitable for my piece of fabric (something to not require cutting or shaping it too much - I felt it would destroy the print) I decided to design it myself. Inspired by the obvious psychotic episode the designer of the fabric had (hey… 3D flowers!!! ) I went with the flow and imagined a sort of a long sleeved smock “peaking” from under a bodice that combines elements of a straightjacket (psychosis theme) and of the regency tailcoat (especially the sleeves). In short a structured and constrictive looking bodice (fitted, narrow shoulders, high sleeve cap … etc) over a free, flowy skirt.

The asymmetrical cut of the bodice at the hem I intended to serve as transition between the two.

The bad:
Not interfacing the wool crêpe I used for the bodice was clearly a mistake. With wear losses the structure and gets a cloth like appearance that I am not mad about. I think I should have interfaced it pretty much in it’s entirety with a light stretch fusible interface.
I need to refine the sleeves - too fiddly to set in. If you get the look I was going for I am open for suggestions.

Practice more sewing with wool crêpe; I somehow managed to sew without problems the silk (everything is french seamed) but on the wool crêpe - hello seam puckering! Arrrrgh!
Other stuff that I am sure you will see and readily point it to me….

The good:
I think the design is ok. I mean… I like it - it is what I wanted. I was not aiming to emphasise any particular part of my body. I just wanted a dress that would “walk” well and it does. You can see me trying to be all catwalk like on Instagram - with a 3°C wind hitting me in the face - I have actual tears in my eyes!!! I love garments that move well. I personally think femininity can be expressed through movement also and not only through sexiness, hourglassiness and so forth.
I am proud of the way I handled the silk with it being my first time and all.
Other stuff that I am sure you will see and readily point it to me….

For purely scientific reasons and/or because you’re such a curios kitten, you can download the pattern I made for myself. Be advised it is MTM (made to measure) … me. It will be available until my next post.

Il Quasi Vestito per Capodanno

Perché quasi? Perché non l’ho indossato a Capodanno :(. Avevo un po di febbre dunque ho festeggiato in camicia di flanella, maglione e jeans!

La storia di questo vestito comincia con me provando ad acquistare un pezzo di crêpe di seta con stampa fiori 3D da Supercut, arrivandoci un pelino troppo tardi e dovendomi perciò accontentare con l’ultimo metro.
Cosa ci puoi fare con un metro di crêpe di seta?
Ho cercato un cartamodello ma quando non sono riuscita a trovare uno adatto (volevo qualcosa che non richiedesse troppi tagli - ho pensato potessero rovinare l’effetto del motivo stampato) ho deciso di disegnarlo da sola. Trovando ispirazione nel ovvio episodio psicotico all’origine del design del tessuto (stiamo parlando dopotutto di fiori 3D!!!) ho pensato ad una sorta di sottoveste a maniche lunghe (come quelle del 800 per intenderci) che “spunta” da sotto un corpetto che combina elementi della camicia di forza (seguendo il tema psicosi) e della marsina stile Reggenza (mi riferisco sopratutto alle maniche). In breve un corpetto strutturato ed in apparenza costrittivo sopra una gonna libera e fluida.

Ho visto il taglio asimmetrico della parte inferiore del corpetto come un punto di transizione tra le due “zone” principali: corpetto e gonna.

Non mi piace:
Non stabilizzare il crepe di lana che ho usato per il corpetto è stato chiaramente un errore. Indossandolo dopo un po perde la struttura e comincia ad assumere un aspetto straccioso che non mi fa per niente impazzire. Avrei dovuto (penso) usare una fliselina termoadesiva in maglina leggera su quasi tutta la superficie.
Devo lavorarci ancora un po sulle maniche - è troppo laborioso inserirle. Se avete capito quale è il look che stavo cercando è avete qualche idea - sono aperta a suggerimenti!

Devo esercitami di più con il crêpe di lana; In qualche maniera sono riuscita a cucire senza problemi la seta usando dappertutto cuciture inglesi…. con il crêpe di lana : increspature a gogo! Ufffa!!!!
Atre cose che sono sicura voi noterete e prontamente mi indicherete…

Il design. Penso sia ok - è quello che volevo. Non stavo cercando di enfatizzare nessuna parte del corpo in particolare. Volevo soltanto un vestito che “camminasse” bene e questo lo fa. Potete vedere su Instagram la sottoscritta scimmiottando una passerella con il vento a 3°C che la colpisce in faccia - avevo lacrime vere agli occhi!!!! Adoro gli abiti che si muovono bene, il che non necessariamente significa che si muovono tanto - quello che basta per renderli femminili.
Ne vado fiera del modo in quale sono riuscita fare le cuciture (inglesi) sulla seta nonostante fosse la mia prima volta.
Atre cose che sono sicura voi noterete e prontamente mi indicherete…

Per ragioni puramente scientifiche e/o perché siete dei gattini curiosi, potete scaricare il cartamodello che ho disegnato per me stessa - parola chiave: me stessa… usando le mie misure!

Little Lotta

Little Lotta

In one of my very rare fits of selfless sewing I made a dress as a present for my little niece third birthday - a Lotta Dress. I got the pattern from Compagnie M at Abilmente this autumn and had lots of fun sewing it.
First of all I got to take a break from compulsive fitting - I only had her height to go by and I cut a straight 4yo size - yeah she is tall. Second, it's refreshing to look at a very small piece of fabric and be sure it's enough... and third... I didn't have to pose for the pictures!!!

I find the Lotta to be such a cute design. The pattern is very well drafted and the instructions very clear with very detailed photo illustrations. There are three pocket design variations, three back closure options and a sleeveless version that can be used with Compagnie M’s Mara Blouse or Louisa Dress sleeve pattern. I however chose the "classic Lotta look" and eliminated the neck detail and went with a jewel neckline that I decorated with an iron-on glitter tattoo from Supercut. She likes sparkly things.

I french seamed the side seams and machine hemmed with a blind hem stitch.

I used the fabrics I got as a prize from Katy&Laney - part of a Tap Shorts care package. It is a polka dot organic cotton and a cotton lining with cats! I loved it but arrived at the end of the summer and I just couldn't wait any longer to cut into it. Sorry ... It would have made beautiful tap shorts though.

Piccola Lotta

In uno dei miei rari attacchi di cucito altruista, ho confezionato un vestitino come regalo per il terzo compleanno della mia nipotina - un Vestitino Lotta. Ho comprato il cartamodello ad Abilmente quest'autunno da Compagnie M e mi sono divertita tantissimo a cucirlo.
Prima di tutto ho preso una pausa dal "adattamento compulsivo" - l'unica misura che avevo è stata l'altezza e ho tagliato una misura 4 anni. Secondo: quanto bello e trovarti con un pezzo di tessuto piccolissimo davanti e pensare basta e avanza? Terzo: non ho dovuto fare da modella per le foto!!!

Trovo il vestitino Lotta molto carino. Il cartamodello è disegnato molto bene e le istruzioni molto chiare e corredate di foto-illustrazioni dettagliate. Il cartamodello include tre variazioni diverse per le tasche, tre varianti di chiusura dietro ed una versione senza maniche. Io ho scelto il "look classico Lotta" eliminando però il taglio decorativo del collo - sono andata con un girocollo semplice che ho decorato con un piccolo adesivo mini tattoo glitter presi da Supercut. Alla piccola piacciono i luccichii.

Ho fatto cuciture inglesi (ottimo tutorial qui) lungo i lati e l'orlo a macchina con un punto orlo invisibile.

Ho usato un tessuto medio-pesante a pois in cottone organico ed un tessuto da fodera in cottone stampato con disegni di gatti!!!

Making the Perfect Button-up Shirt (1)

I love it!

This is the Aime Comme Mythique shirt by Aime Comme Marie and I love it.

I cut a size S and the only thing I had to modify was the width of the shoulders because… well… I have scrawny shoulders. Maybe I fitted the shoulders a tad too much but the idea was to not have lots of fabric in the armpit area ... I prefer it when wearing the shirt under one of those skinny sweaters. Oh ...btw I started making this with the idea it was a muslin. My fiancée's mother, originally bought this gingham fabric to make a tablecloth or some curtains for the kitchen - so I had no expectation of wearability. When it turned out more than wearable I made a little happy dance. Of course I have to wear it with a scarf or something because I forgot I have a scrawny neck also and I did not fit the neckline. There is something weird going on with the closure at the neck... In theory it's perfect… on the body it gaps! Maybe it's the button placement, maybe it's the too big neckline. Any ideas?

My topstitching is all over the place: from 1/8 or less to 1/4 or more I just couldn’t decide how I like it best.

I did not topstitch the button placket - it’s just folded and pressed. As contrast fabric I used scraps from my Carme Blouse and of course I fused the interface to the wrong pieces, cut them again, managed to make the same mistake and proceeded to convince myself that I actually like the contrast fabric on the inside of the collar stand! Btw I love the shape of the collar!

I hand sewed the lower edge of the collar stand facing and the upper edge of the cuff facings and all the internal seams are flat-felled.

RECAP (sort of)
The pattern, Aime Comme Mythique, goes from size S (bust: 82cm) to a LL (bust: 100cm) and does not include seam allowance. It’s a classic button-up shirt cut with bust darts, shaping at the sides, back yoke, fold over front button placket, cuffs with tower sleeve plackets, collar and collar-stand. The instructions are only in french but pretty straight forward - my pitiful language skills, a little help from google translate and the illustrations proved to be enough :)

For the fashion fabric version I intend to (re)add 1/4 to 3/8in to each the shoulder, fix somehow that first button problem, round the cuffs (it’s a flimsier fabric and I’m afraid it wont hold well a sharp angle) and maybe lengthen the sleeves by 3/8in.

Since I finished sewing this shirt, just before Christmas, I’ve been wearing it a lot. For me the button-up shirt is a wardrobe staple and I’m really glad I’ve found a pattern that I simply love.

Confezionare la camicia perfetta (1)

Questa è la camicia Aime Comme Mythique di Aime Comme Marie e la adoro.

Ho tagliato una misura S e l’unica cosa che ho modificato è la larghezza spalla … perché le mie spalle sono piuttosto magre. Forse ho accorciato un po troppo, ma l’idea era di ridurre il più possibile la quantità di tessuto sotto le ascelle … lo preferisco quando, sopratutto adesso che fa freddo, indosso la camicia sotto qualche maglioncino sul aderente. A proposito: ho tagliato il tessuto (un gingham che la mamma del mio fidanzato aveva acquistato tempo fa per farci delle tendine o una tovaglia) con l’idea di fare una teletta di prova perciò quando alla fine mi sono resa conto che è più che indossabile ho eseguito un piccolo balletto celebrativo. La devo indossare, è vero, con una sciarpa perché mi sono dimenticata di avere anche un collo da gallina e non ho adattato lo scollo. Anche se in teoria, la chiusura al collo è cucita in modo perfetto, quando la si indossa cede, forse per via dello scollo troppo ampio o forse devo posizionare meglio il primo bottone … boh!? Qualche idea?

Le impunture non sono per niente coerenti … vanno da 2 a 5mm - semplicemente non sono riuscita a decidere come le preferisco.

Il cannoncino non l’ho impuntato, è solo girato doppiamente a pressato. Come tessuto a contrasto ho usato degli avanzi di tessuto della mia Blusa Carme. Sono riuscita ad incollare la fliselina sui pezzi sbagliati, ho tagliato nuovamente i pezzi ed ho riattaccato male la fliselina a qual’ punto ho deciso che il tessuto a contrasto sul interno del solino è esattamente quello che volevo!

Ho cucito a mano il lato inferiore della paramontura del solino e il lato superiore delle paramonture dei polsini.

RECAP (una sorta)
Il cartamodello, Aime Comme Mythique, va dalla misura S (circ. seno: 82cm) to a LL (circ.seno: 100cm) e non include margini di cucitura. E’ una camicia classica button-up con carré, riprese sul seno, modellata in vita, con cannoncino, fessini, polsini e colletto con solino separato. Le spiegazioni sono in francese ma sono piuttosto facili da capire, le mie patetiche conoscenze, google translate e le illustrazioni sono state più che sufficienti.

Per la versione in tessuto moda intendo (re)aggiungere 0,5-1cm alla spalla, risolvere in qualche modo il problema del primo bottone, arrotondare i polsini e forse allungare le maniche di ca. 1cm.

Da quando ho finito di cucire questa camicia, giusto prima di Natale, l’ho indossata tantissimo. Per me la camicia button-up è un pezzo essenziale della guardaroba e sono veramente contenta di aver trovato quello che sembra il cartamodello perfetto per me.

It’s a Grey Winter - Cradle Me…

While knitting the Norah Gaughan Vest I fell in love with the Rowan Big Wool yarn so when I saw on Ebay Winter Drift, the brochure dedicated to it (you can find it here and see all the patterns inside here) I just couldn’t resist. It contains some really nice patterns and some of them are super easy to knit. Do not expect now to see all Big Wool knits on my blog … for now I decided to indulge and maybe I’ll indulge in the making of the Comfort Poncho also - it’s called “Comfort” people! It’s a pleasure to hold between your hands and it’s really quick to knit (2 plies super bulky!).

I went for the Cradle Cardigan/Jacket pattern by Marie Wallin in grey (56 Glum) as I figured I needed a jacket to go with my short Turias.

The pattern could be explained better - if you are a beginner and english is not your language you might have some difficulties interpreting it. Note: rib(x) means continue to work the ribbing for (x) sts ;).

The yarn holds beautifully the cables - gives them structure and definition.

Collar detail - boyfriend still not familiar with the focusing mechanism (insert here exasperated sigh).

The collar is a play on the peter pan collar and I thought it was supposed to lay flat so I attached it with the junction on the outside even though the pattern clearly states “with the right side facing (…) pick up and knit”. It doesn’t. I was temped for five seconds to frog it and start over but… have you met me? I’m lazy. Luckily I didn’t do a very bad job and with a big scarf (bigger than the one I’m wearing here) you can’t tell ;).

It has a kimono sleeve with a wide cuff.

E’ un’inverno grigio …

Mentre lavoravo al Gilè di Norah Gaughan mi sono innamorata del filato Big Wool di Rowan (distribuito in Italia dalla Coats) perciò quando ho visto su Ebay Winter Drift, il libricino ad esso dedicato (potette trovarlo qui o qui e pottete vedere i modelli contenuti qui), non ho saputo resistere. Contiene alcuni modelli molto carini ed alcuni super facili da realizzare. Non aspettatevi adesso di vedere solo modelli Big Wool sul mio blog - per il momento me l’ho concedo e forse mi concederò anche il piacere di realizzare il Comfort Poncho - si chiama “Comfort” perdindirindina! E un piacere tenerla tra le mani e si lavora alla velocità della luce (super bulky a 2 capi!). Ho scelto il cardigan/giacchetta Cradle di Marie Wallin in grigio (56 Glum) - mi serviva una giacchetta da abbinare ai miei Turia corti

Il modello potrebbe essere spiegato meglio - se sei una principiante e hai delle difficoltà con l’inglese allora potresti averle anche nel decifrare il modello. Nota: rib(x) significa continua la costa per for (x) maglie ;).

Il filato tiene benissimo le trecce le da struttura e definizione.

Dettaglio del colletto - moroso ancora perplesso difronte ai meccanismi della messa a fuoco (inserire qui sospiro esasperato).

Il colletto è una variante del colletto peter pan ed ho pensato stesse piatto dunque ho deciso di realizzarlo con il giunto sul esterno anche se le istruzioni recitano chiaramente il contrario “with the right side facing (…) pick up and knit”. Giant Toddler or Cool?

Yep, this is my second version of the Turia Dungarees pattern by Pauline Alice (still love it btw) - a short dressier version.

I cut these during the Abilmente fair (mid October!!!). During the fair I had no way of fitting a fresh version so instead of copying the pattern from the original I used my previously modified and fitted version. It was a skinny one so I added as much ease around the legs as I could. I wish I could add more but because of the Abilmente fabric debacle I had to use for these a piece of fabric from my stash that fortunately I brought with me as backup. It was a small piece (140x80 cm) of black Chanel-like fabric (wool+cotton+synthetics - I did not write down the composition) and it took some inventive fabric cutting to make it work.
As I said I wish there was more ease (3-4 cm more) around the legs - the way they are right now they might remind of the german lederhosen (hopefully not that other Sacha’s famous version).

I installed an invisible zipper at the center back. I used a short one (to lazy to go to the store to get a longer one) and I do have to wiggle a bit to get into and out of them… note to self: take it easy with the panettone these holidays!
All the raw edges are serged (the fabric frays like crazy). All the open edges are stabilised with nylon tape. The entire thing is lined. Because the lining was an afterthought I had to attach it by hand using a fell stitch. I officially hate hand sewing.

Side leg slits = extra comfort.

I chose these gilded metal and crystal buttons because I think they are a perfect match with the fabric and the feel of these short overalls. I had four - two I placed on the side mock belt thingys I added. The other two I used to inadvertently give myself golden nipples. I have yet to decide if it’s cheeky or plainly unfortunate.

So… what’s the verdict: giant toddler or cool?

Bambino Gigantesco o Cool?

Ebbene si, questa è la mia seconda versione della Salopette Turia di Pauline Alice - una versione corta più elegante.

Ho tagliato il tessuto durante la Fiera Abilmente (metà ottobre!!!). Dato che in fiera non avevo la possibilità di provare e adattare una nuova versione del cartamodello, ho usato come base il cartamodello già modificato e adattato della prima versione che ho confezionato cercando di aggiungere quanta più vestibilità possibile sopratutto sulla gamba. Avrei voluto aggiungerne di più ma visto il fiasco dei tessuti di Abilmente ho tagliato il tessuto di scorta che mi ero portata da casa - un piccolo pezzo (140x80 cm) di “Chanelino” nero (lana+cotone+sintetico - non ricordo la composizione esatta). C’è voluta non poca inventiva per farci stare il cartamodello.
Come dicevo, non sarebbe stato male avere quei 3-4 cm in più di vestibilità sulla gamba. Così come sono ricordano un po i lederhosen tedeschi (speriamo non quelli resi famosi da un altro Sacha).

Ho montato una lampo invisible sulla linea centrale dietro. Ho usato una lampo corta (troppo pigra per farci un salto in merceria e comprare una più lunga) e mi devo un po dimenare per entrarci dentro: mi dovrò ricordare di andarci piano con il panettone queste feste.
Ho usato la tagliacuci per rifinire tutti i bordi. Ho stabilizzato tutti i margini con nastro di nylon. Ho foderato l’intero capo. Visto che l’idea di foderare è arrivata in un secondo tempo ho dovuto fissarla con cuciture a mano (fell stitch) Odio ufficialmente cucire a mano.

Spacchetto laterale sulla gamba = più comodità

Ho scelto questi bottoni in metallo dorato con cristallo centrale perché penso siano perfetti per il tessuto e per il look di questa salopette corta. Ne avevo quattro - due ho adoperato per dei finti cinturini ai lati. Gli altri due sono diventati per sbaglio un paio di capezzoli d’oro. Devo ancora decidere se questo piazzamento sia irriverente o semplicemente sfortunato.

Dunque … qual’è il verdetto: bambino gigantesco o cool?

Norah Gaughan Cabled Vest

It’s cold … I’m knitting …
… besides, I’m swamped with work and if it’s ok to knit for half an hour - it’s pretty frustrating to sew (arrrgh).

Very warm, this vest designed by Norah Gaughan and published in Vogue Knitting Fall 2010, features exploded asymmetrical heart cables travelling up the front panels past the shoulders and around the neck.
It has an hourglass shape emphasised by the back-waist ribbing and an I-cord belt.

The pattern has a generous ease amount because it’s meant as outerwear so I cast-on a size S (btw Vogue offers finished measurements). It has a difficulty rating of 3 (intermediate) but it’s pretty quick to knit with the super bulky yarn and all, and I did not find the cables very difficult. Maybe the most challenging part about this pattern is closing the shawl collar at the back neck.

The recommended yarn is Berocco Peruvia Quick difficult to find in Italy so I substituted with Rowan Big Wool which made the whole thing a bit more heavy but also more warm.

Gilè a trecce Norah Gaughan

Fa freddo … sto knittando (scusate il termine ma a dire lavorare la maglia ai ferri s’invecchia) …
Ultimamente sono sommersa da lavoro e se si può knitttare mezz’oretta - cucire lo trovo frustrante (arrrgh).

Questo caldo gilè disegnato da Norah Gaughan e pubblicato in Vogue Knitting Fall 2010 è caratterizzato da trecce a cuore esplose in asimmetrico che decorano i pannelli frontali passano la linea delle spalle e si congiungono dietro il collo.
Ha una linea a clessidra enfatizzata dalle coste lungo la vita dietro e un cinturino I-cord.

Il modello ha una vestibilità ampia essendo inteso come capo esterno perciò ho avviato una S (cmq Vogue stampa anche le dimensioni del capo finito). Nonostante il livello difficoltà 3 (intermedia), il modello si lavora piuttosto velocemente anche perché si utilizza un filato “super bulky”. Non ho trovato le trecce molto difficili… la parte più complicata secondo me è la chiusura dietro del collo a scialle.

Il filato consigliato dall’autrice è Berocco Peruvia Quick piuttosto difficile da trovare in Italia perciò l’ho sostituito con Rowan Big Wool (distribuito dalla Coats) che ha reso il capo leggermente più pesante ma anche più caldo.

Sono molto contenta del risultato specialmente perché riesco ad abbinarlo con uno dei miei cappelli in feltro (devo confessare che ho una passione smodata per i cappelli) è questo penso sia un look che funziona. Non siete d’accordo?

Sono curiosa di sapere cosa scegliete di fare quando avete poco tempo a disposizione per il “craftting” (altra parola non ortodossa). Cucite, lavorate la maglia, cucinate …? Come vi organizzate il tempo?

A Camí with an accent!

Finally I got around photographing the Camí Dress I finished and wore the last day of the Abilmente Fair. Had to do it indoors because for the last two weeks we had nothing but rain around here and before I just couldn’t find the time to do it :(.

Hope you like it (despite the photos) cause I love it!

The idea was making a fall/winter version so I used a viscose ponte knit. Because of the stretchiness of the fabric I had to grade the pattern down two - three sizes from my base (36). I used a black stretch silk satin for the cuffs, collar and button placket. The button placket is more stable than the back so the back waistline stretched more in length due to the weight of the skirt, compared to the front so the back waistline results lower than the front waistline - maybe I should have compensated for it.

What I found most difficult about sewing this dress was gathering and attaching the skirt even though I reduced the fulness by about 30cm - the ponte it’s quite bulky! On the plus side it totally doesn’t need a zipper.

I love the pockets - how come they ended by being too low remains a mystery!!!

Because black on black did not reflect my spirit at the time I felt I needed to give it a pop and added a “very Valentino” collar. I cut the flowers with the cheapest paper puncher I could find in the fair even if the lady that sold it to me was skeptical about it! I guess the quality and thinness of the leather (italian leather purchased in the Fair from these guys - they only sell leather at fairs and Nicoletta from dinuvoledicuori found their booth , thank you Niko) made it possible to use the paper puncher after all. I then sewed them onto the collar with the sewing machine and black thread.

Two words about the pattern: love it!

L’accento su Camí!

Finalmente sono riuscita a fotografare il vestito Camí che ho finito e indossato l’ultimo giorno della Fiera Abilmente. Alla fine ho dovuto fotografarlo all’interno per via delle piogge incessanti delle ultime due settimane e prima semplicemente non sono riuscita a trovare il tempo :(.
Spero vi piaccia (nonostante le foto) perché io lo adoro!

L’idea era di cucire una versione autunno/inverno perciò ho scelto un punto milano in viscosa. A causa dell’elasticità del tessuto ho dovuto ridurre di due - tre taglie rispetto alla mia taglia base (36). Ho usato un raso stretch di seta per i polsini, il colletto ed il cannoncino. Visto che il cannoncino è più stabile della schiena, la linea della vita posteriore si è allungata di più con il peso della gonna e risulta più bassa rispetto alla linea della vita anteriore - forse avrei dovuto pensarci prima e compensare.

La parte più difficile nel confezionare questo vestito è stata decisamente unire la gonna anche se ne ho ridotto l’ampiezza di circa 30cm - il punto milano e piuttosto voluminoso come tessuto. Come punto positivo non ho dovuto montare la chiusura lampo.

Adoro le tasche - come mai sono finite così in basso rimane un mistero!!!

Dato che il nero su nero non rifletteva al momento il mio stato d’animo ho deciso che aveva bisogno di un accento di colore e aggiunto un colletto “very Valentino”. Ho ritagliato i fiorellini con il più economico punch per carta che sono riuscita a trovare in fiera anche se la signora che me l’ha venduto sembrava piuttosto scettica. Suppongo è stato possibile per via della qualità e della finezza della pelle - comprata sempre in fiera dallo stand di questi ragazzi purtroppo vendono pelle solo nelle fiere. Devo ringraziare Nicoletta del blog dinuvoledicuori che ha trovato lo stand - grazie Niko :)! Ho cucito i fiorellini usando la macchina da cucire e filo nero.

Due parole sul cartamodello: lo adoro!

Drop that waist! The Malvarosa

For the last couple of years, 1920s inspired drop waist dresses were all over the runways - from Victoria Beckham, Etro, Chloe to Proenza Schouler, Isabel Marant, Valentino, Chanel and Dior, pretty much every other designer out there included this silhouette in his/her collection. The actual drop of the waist may vary from just a couple of inches below the natural waist to much more for a more “dramatic” look. I think the drop waist silhouette works especially well for a more boyish figure and can be particularly flattering for women with a less defined waist.

When I first saw the Malvarosa designed by the talented Pauline, I fell in love with it - it’s a shift drop waist with an interesting drop shoulder (actually sewing the sleeve to the drop shoulder (at an angle) is the most difficult part about making this dress) an pockets! I love pockets!

The only thing that I modified a bit were the proportions - the length of the sleeve, the drop of the waist and the overall length. I lined the entire bodice and therefore I did not used facings. To hold the lining from showing I under stitched it at the neckline and at the edge of the pockets.

This is my first attempt at plaid matching and maybe it’s not perfect but I tried my best and I’m quite happy with the result.

A note on the leggings: I used the Burda Lace Leggings pattern and a coated cotton lycra blend jersey to make them. I know the “leather” look leggings trend passed its peak but hey … it took me less than half an hour and 6€ to make them.

I love this dress, I love the drop waist silhouette and I’m looking forward to experiment with it some more.

Malvarosa - vestito a vita bassa

Da due anni a questa parte, quasi tutti i designer da Victoria Beckham, Etro, Chloe a Proenza Schouler, Isabel Marant, Valentino, Chanel e Dior hanno presentato in passerella una qualche interpretazione del vestito a vita bassa inspirato agli anni venti. La “caduta” effettiva del punto vita può variare ampiamente da un paio di pollici a molto di più per un effetto più “drammatico”. Personalmente penso che il vestito a vita bassa dona molto sopratutto a figure più androgine e a donne senza un punto vita molto marcato.

Mi sono innamorata del vestito Malvarosa dal primo momento in cui l’ho visto - e un vestito “shift” con una costruzione interessante (“drop shoulder”) della spalla e tasche. Adoro le tasche!

L’unica cosa che ho modificato sono le proporzioni - la lunghezza della manica, la “caduta” del punto vita e la lunghezza totale. Ho foderato l’intero corpetto perciò non ho dovuto usare paramonture nella scollatura. Ho impuntato internamente (“understitching”) la fodera sulla linea dello scollo e sulla linea delle tasche per costringerla all’interno.

Questa è la prima volta che provo a far combaciare le righe del plaid - non è venuto perfetto ma ho fatto del mio meglio e sono piuttosto contenta del risultato.

Adoro questo vestito e non vedo l’ora di sperimentare ancora con questa silhouette.

Sewing demons, Inspiring ladies & a Pledge

I am a quiet girl, not invisible (it would be hard to miss a tallish walking stick) but quiet, a bit smug and people tend to not like me or be really uncomfortable around me - unless I am among people who SEW! That is one of the manny manny things I discovered during the Abilmente Fair. When I am around people who sew I get possessed by the “sewing demons” and I become a different person. I guess that is because I’m starting to be passionate about this sewing business. I’ve never been truly passionate about anything (at my own exhibition openings I’m like “… yeah … whatever”), and it feels strange like a new haircut.

Another thing that I discovered is that sometimes reality is better than expected. Usually internet-knowing people hardly lives up to meeting them in real life but if they are Pauline and Silvia,

Eléonore and Anna,

Marie and her friend Flavia,

Marte and Annika …

…reality kicks ass (oops… excuse my language, there must be some residual demons around).
They are all inspiring talented ladies.

Over the last month or so I got to know and just love Pauline’s designs. She is so talented and sweet and I could not help but admire her way of saying “It’s ok” in front of things that would madden or at least upset other people. Quick tip - go stalk her site, the pattern she is about to release is going to be smashing!
I was truly impressed by Eléonore, not only by her talent but also by her capacity to be driven and focused and precise and her aspiration to deliver the best patterns out there.
Marie’s line reflects it’s creator style and spirit: urban chic with an edge. Unfortunately she is the one I got to talk the least but I hope there’s going to be soon another occasion cause I’m really really intrigued by her.
Marte is simply a pro.

BTW I’ve got some goodies - fine leather and patterns!!!

I bow before Anna and Silvia and Annika they are so passionate about sewing, it’s contagious! Let’s hope the italian sewing revolution (as Martine from Supercut put it) is indeed about to begin!

For the fair we’ve been offered some fabric to demonstrate the patterns, courtesy of Giesse Scampoli. Some of it was good, mine was all bad and I’ve been bitching about it for the entire duration of the fair!

But now I’m home and I realise that I cannot just throw it away - it’s for the most part polyester, that is plastic - and I’m sure it would take the earth like a million years to digest it. I’m not trying to get into a sustainable fabric debate, it’s just that fabric once produced if it finds no use whatsoever it’s a waste of resources. So I pledge to find a use for it and to try my best to make it look good and why not, even stylish … it will take a while and maybe some divine intervention, but I’m in no hurry.

As I got back from the fair with the flu :((it was to be expected - I’m not used to be around so many people) it will take me a while to manage to catch up with things but as soon as I can I’ll blog about the dresses that I wore during the fair - a Malvarosa and a Cami I specially sew for the event.

I demoni del cucito, delle super ragazze & un’impegno

Sono una persona tranquilla, non invisibile (sarebbe difficile non vedere una specie di palo che cammina) ma tranquilla, un po con la puzza sotto il naso e generalmente tendo a non piacere alla gente. Una tra le molte cose che ho scoperto durante Abilmente è che tutto questo cambia radicalmente quando mi trovo in mezzo a gente che CUCE! I “demoni del cucito” si impossessano di me e divento una persona totalmente diversa. Suppongo la ragione sta nella passione che ci metto. Non sono mai stata veramente appassionata da niente (alle inaugurazioni delle mie stesse mostre il mio atteggiamento può essere riassunto dalle parole “sssi sssi .. vabbè”), e questa passione me la sento strana addosso come un nuovo taglio di capelli.

Un’altra cosa che ho scoperto è che avvolte la realtà può superare le aspettative. Solitamente le internet-conoscenze deludono nell’incontro faccia a faccia ma se si tratta di Pauline e Silvia,

Eléonore e Anna,

Marie e la sua amica Flavia,

Marte e Annika …

… la realtà spacca (oops… scusate il linguaggio, ci devono essere ancora dei demoni in giro).
Sono tutte delle ragazze fantastiche e di grande talento.

Durante quest’ultimo mese ho avuto l’opportunità di conoscere ed amare i design di Pauline - giovane donna dolcissima e piena di talento. Non ho potuto che ammirare il suo modo di dire “It’s ok” di fronte a situazioni che altri avrebbero trovato come minimo fastidiose. Vi consiglio di tenere d’occhio il suo sito - il suo prossimo cartamodello sara stupendo!
Sono stata veramente colpita da Eléonore, non solo dal suo talento ma anche dalla sua capacità di essere motivata e precisa e dalla sua ambizione di riuscire a pubblicare i migliori cartamodelli sul mercato.
La linea di cartamodelli di Marie rispecchia lo stile e lo spirito della sua creatrice: urban chic sfizioso.
La professionalità di Marte è semplicemente impressionante.

A proposito… sono tornata a casa con due pezzi di morbidissima pelle e tre super cartamodelli - non vedo l’ora di metterci le mani!

M’inchino di fronte ad Anna e Silvia e Annika la passione che ci mettono e tale da diventare contagiosa! Speriamo che la “sewing revolution” italiana (come dice Martine di Supercut) sta veramente iniziando!

Per la fiera abbiamo ricevuto dei tessuti forniti dalla Giesse Scampoli. Alcuni erano decenti i miei non lo erano per niente - mi ci sono lamentata per l’intera durata della fiera!

Una volta arrivata a casa mi sono resa conto che non posso semplicemente buttarli via - per la maggiore si tratta di poliestere, cioè plastica - e sono sicura che la terra avrebbe bisogno di un milione di anni per digerirlo. Non sto provando di aprire una polemica sulla sostenibilità del poliestere - il mio ragionamento è che il tessuto una volta prodotto se non viene mai utilizzato è solo uno spreco di risorse. Perciò mi impegno di riuscire ad usarlo e perché no, magari anche con stile … ci vorrà un po e magari l’intercessione di qualche santo, ma non ho fretta.

Visto che sono tornata dalla fiera con l’influenza :( (era da aspettarsi - non sono abituata a stare in mezzo a così tanta gente) - mi ci vorrà un po per rimettermi in carreggiata ma appena avrò la possibilità “blogherò" i due vestiti che ho realizzato apposta un Malvarosa e un Cami. A presto.

The lovely Jillian from Sew Unravelled nominated me to carry on with this current blog hop the origins of which seem to be surrounded in mystery -wouldn’t be cool to find out who exactly started it!?
Anyway, Jillian (I’m amazed by Jillian not only she is a fantastic sewer, she works, she studies and she is a mom!) thinks I’m sweet! That is so nice of her! I think my fiancee, for one, would disagree - and here is why:

Expressions (edited out from posts ;) ) ranging from mildly annoyed to outright murderous: “if you don’t quit fooling around I’m going to bite your head off!” sort of stuff. They are all aimed at the man behind the camera (my fiancee of course) who often says that the only thing missing from the shots is a lupara on my shoulder… hmmm.

Why do you write?
When I started sewing no one else among my family and friends could really understand why and even thought it to be a waste of time (which was really annoying) … so I needed to find people who “got it” and to find a way to interact with them. Besides, my doctor thought writing was a wonderful idea … so I started doing it and this blog was born. I do not particularly enjoy writing, I just do it because it’s challenging and if you followed my sewing “adventures” you might have noticed I love a good challenge and it did allow me to connect with some wonderful people and I hope it will keep on doing so.

What are you working on?
I’m preparing for the Abilmente Fair one of the most important european fairs dedicated to the creative handicrafts.
I’ll be joining in Vicenza, Anna from Paunnet, Silvia from Sewing Princess, Annika from Näh-Connection and the designers behind Pauline Alice Patterns, Deer and Doe, Aime comme Marie, and Compagnie M. Together will do some sewing, some chatting and get to know each other a little better. I hope you’ll come to find us!!! How does it differ from others of its genre?
If “it” means writing - I am no poet and I think my writing is sort of bad. If “it” is the blog itself and my sewing … I could write something complicated involving the words italian, style, taste etc… but would sound like cheap propaganda don’t you think? The blog pretty much represents me. And like me it’s slightly psychotic, slightly hypomaniac and terribly uneven. Everyone is different.

How does your writing process work?
Like going to the dentist - take a deep breath … sit in the chair .. hope for the best and get it over with!

Who is next?
SARA - Me and Sara started blogging pretty much at the same time! I was the first to comment on her blog she was the first to comment on mine! I like to think we have a special connection. ANNIE - I just love everything Annie does! Comunque, Jillian pensa che sono una ragazza dolce! E lei, troppo carina! Penso che il mio fidanzato, tanto per cominciare sarebbe in disaccordo - ecco perché:

Questa carrellata di espressioni (tagliate nel editing degli articoli ;) ) che vanno dall’infastidita all’omicida: ”se non la smetti di fare il pagliaccio ti stacco la testa a morsicate!” è rivolta perlopiù all’uomo dietro la macchina fotografica (il mio fidanzato ovviamente) solito a dire che dalle inquadrature manca qualcosa … la lupara sulla spalla…. hmmm.

Perché scrivi?
Quando ho cominciato a cucire nessuno tra i miei amici e parenti riusciva capire il perché, anzi pensavano fosse una perdita di tempo… perciò ho sentito il bisogno di trovare altre persone con i miei stessi interessi ed una modalità di interagire con loro. In più il mio medico pensava scrivere fosse una buona idea.. così è nato questo piccolo blog. Non amo particolarmente scrivere. Scrivo perché è una sfida e chi tra voi segue le mie “avventure sartoriali” sa quanto mi piacciono le sfide. Scrivo perché mi ha permesso di conoscere gente fantastica e spero continui a farlo.

A cosa stai lavorando?
Mi sto preparando per Abilmente Autunno di Vicenza. Sarò presente in Fiera accanto ad Anna di Paunnet, Silvia di Sewing Princess, Annika di Näh-Connection e le designer dietro Pauline Alice Patterns, Deer and Doe, Aime comme Marie, e Compagnie M. Assieme faremmo scorrere un po di filo sotto i piedini delle macchine da cucire e quattro chiacchiere per conoscerci un po meglio. Spero verrete a trovarci!!! Come si distingue da altro dello stesso genere!
Se per “altro” intendiamo scrittura … ebbene - non sono esattamente una poetessa e generalmente parlando penso di scrivere piuttosto male. Se intendiamo blog di cucito sartoriale ecc. - questo blog mi rappresenta. E’ come me, un po psicotico, un po ipomaniaco e terribilmente non lineare. Ognuno di noi è diverso.

Qual’è il tuo processo di scrittura?
E’ molto simile all’andare dal dentista - fai un bel respiro … ti siedi nella poltrona .. speri vada per il meglio e lo fai!

Chi sono le prossime?
SARA - Io e Sara abbiamo cominciato a “bloggare” più o meno nello stesso tempo. Lei è stata la prima a lasciare un commento sul mio blog, io la prima sul suo. Mi piace pensare di avere una connessione speciale con lei. Sara cuce in maniera incredibile ed il suo stile è inconfondibile - aspetto sempre con ansia i suoi commenti - non so come fa, ma trova sempre qualcosa d’interessante da dire.
ANNIE - Adoro tutto quello che esce dalle mani di Annie! Il suo modo di scrivere è bellissimo (mi ha fatto riscoprire l'amore per il francese che avevo perso ai tempi del liceo - ho persino comprato un corso di francese), i vestiti che realizza sono bellissimi, il suo blog è bellissimo - tutto sommato penso che lei sia una bella persona, piena di talento - una di quelle ragazze che mi piacerebbe incontrare.

Dungarees!

Are the 90’s back? No they are not but the dungarees seem to be back at least for the last couple of seasons - an updated version anyway. I couldn’t figure out the dungarees trend until I made a pair.

I hate tight waistbands, especially the ones that hit my natural waist. I spend lots of time sitting and I am convinced that a tight band around my midsection is bad for my internal organs. Well, dungarees offer complete midsection freedom!

The pattern I used is the Turia Dungarees by Pauline Alice Patterns. Love it! It’s simple to make and easy to customise. I had to fit it for my height and my pronounced swayback (had to lower substantially the front crotch). I lowered the waistline and put in a mock waistband thus changed the proportion between the upper body portion and the lower body. I find that, visually, it works better for my figure.

Because I used stretch denim I thought of giving them all those typical jeans features: topstitching, rivets, etc.

The front fly is totally fake ;)!

After basting the side seams to try the fit I realised that the stretchiness of the fabric together with the lowered waist was enough to allow me to put them on without the use of a side zipper. I was very happy to do without the zipper because I couldn’t find one with a metal color consistent with the rivets, the buckles and the buttons.

The shape of the back pockets was inspired by some RTW jeans I have and is one of my favourites. Too bad that relying on my fiancees “yeah yeah they’re fine” I ended up placing them a bit too low.

My machine refused to work with the jeans thread so I used two spools of cotton all purpose thread.
I distressed the fabric using sandpaper and learned how to do it by taking Angela Wolf’s Sewing Designer Jeans class on Craftsy! Great class … great instructor … highly recommend it! One thing thou … when sanding your jeans fabric put on a face mask or something! After an evening distressing my denim a smurf took up residence inside my nostrils and I don’t know how toxic those fabric dyes are!

Salopette!

Sono tornati gli anni 90? Fortunatamente no… o almeno non ancora … per il momento solo la salopette sembra essere tornata almeno da due, tre stagioni - una versione aggiornata comunque. Non sono riuscita a capire il perché di questo trend finché non ne ho confezionata una.

Odio le cinture strette in vita, specialmente quelle che si posizionano all’altezza della vita naturale. Passo gran parte del mio tempo seduta e sono convinta che avere una cintura che strangola la vita non fa tanto bene agli organi interni. Da questo punto di vista salopette = totale libertà.

Il Cartamodello che ho usato è il Turia Dungarees di Pauline Alice Patterns. Lo adoro! E semplice da confezionare e facile da modificare. Ho dovuto adattare per la mia altezza e per la iperlordosi lombare (abbassare parecchio il cavallo anteriore). Ho abbassato anche la vita e aggiunto una falsa cintura cambiando così le proporzioni tra la parte superiore e inferiore. Trovo che da un punto di vista visivo, funzionano meglio per la mia figura.

Dato che ho usato denim elasticizzato ho pensato di aggiungere i dettagli tipici dei jeans: impunture, ribattini, ecc.

La patta e totalmente finta ;) !

Dopo aver imbastito le cuciture ai lati per provare la salopette mi sono resa conto che la combinazione tra il tessuto elasticizzato e la vita bassa rendeva superflue l’uso di una chiusura lampo sul fianco. Non mi è dispiaciuto affatto rinunciare alla lampo non essendo stata in grado di trovare una cerniera con le parti metalliche dallo stesso colore dei bottoni e delle fibbie.

La forma delle tasche dietro è una delle mie preferite. Peccato che fidandomi del “vanno benissssssssimo” del mio fidanzato sono finita col piazzarle un po’ troppo in basso.

La mia macchina si è rifiutata di lavorare con il filo jeans che avevo comprato perciò ho dovuto usare due rocchetti di filo di cottone normale.
Ho “invecchiato” il tessuto usando carta vetrata ed ho imparato come farlo seguendo il corso Sewing Designer Jeans di Angela Wolf su Craftsy. Ottimo corso .. brava l’istruttrice! Un’unica cosa … quando usate la carta vetrata per “invecchiare” il denim usate anche una mascherina. Dopo una serata di lavoro sembrava un puffo avesse preso residenza nelle mie narici e non so quanto non tossiche siano le tinture che vengono usate nella produzione del denim.

A Celebration…

40 years ago Diane von Furstenberg launched her signature dress: the wrap dress. It immediately became a classic. It is a dress for all body types - accentuating a woman’s curves or creating the illusion of curves on a more androgynous figure. It’s a simple silhouette that offers a sense of effortless ease and can make you feel beautiful and comfortable at the same time.

Because I prefer defining myself foremost as a maker I decided to … make one.

The DVF signature chain link print jersey being sort of “unavailable” I went for a medium weight abstract/animalier viscose jersey knit and the New Look 6674 pattern.

At first the idea scared me … it takes so little to transform a wannabe fabulous dress into a housedress and not knowing where to begin I enrolled in the Craftsy “Wrap Knit Dress” class. I was a bit disappointed. I found it to be basic and frankly quite boring. There was… is a pattern included with the class but knowing it can take a long time for it to arrive to Italy I bought the New Look pattern as a print-at-home pdf… the whole 120 pages of it! What made me decide on this one was the fulness of the skirt and the collar.

In the beginning of the class the Craftsy instructor explains how to reduce the ease proportionally according to the stretch factor of your fabric. My fabric has a stretch factor of 50 that corresponds to a 3% reduction in ease - in my case, for example, it meant a total reduction in ease of around 4cm and I had a pattern with 9cm of ease included, to start with. In my opinion the bodice of the knit wrap dress has to be fitted otherwise … well… it’s a housedress! A knit garment with 5cm ease is not quite fitted. I had to reduce it some more … a lot. Overall I think I took out the entire 9cm ease and then some because my fabric doesn’t have great recovery.

The instructions on the pattern are “essential”. I chose view A with the sleeve from view B.. which is a short sleeve that I modified to a 3/4 sleeve with a small slit cuff (I don’t know if that’s actually how they are called…) I like the way it opens, I think it’s a nice detail.

I had to modify the armhole - made it smaller, and the sleeve cap - forward shoulder adjustment. I’m still not 100% happy with how the armhole-sleeve cap fit me … it’s a work in progress.
After pattern manipulations of every other kind, the back neck ended up with being to low and the collar that I shortened by about 2-3cm doesn’t rest nicely on the back of my neck. The next time I’ll have to address the issue.

I wanted no topstitching therefore in places I had to improvise and used a lot of understitching especially to force the facings down.

Instead of using a button I used 2 “hook and eye” closures. This fabric is quite heavy and could not be supported by only one … it would have stretched, deformed and all in all be messy.
The main thing I do not like about this pattern is the waistline with the darts and the seaming and the waistband/fake sash. I guess it all might be necessary for a woven but with knits I find it totally superfluous. Do you know by any chance a wrap dress pattern designed for knits?

I’m very proud of the hems … I used Claire Shaeffer’s “figure eight” hem stitch . It took me 4 hours to do all the hemming but it was worth it.

A Celebration…

40 anni fa Diane von Furstenberg lanciò la wrap dress - il vestito incrociato sul davanti ed immediatamente divenne un classico. È un vestito adatto a tutte le corporature - accentuando le forme femminili oppure creando l'illusione delle curve in un fisico più androgino. Ha una silhouette semplice che va a suscitare una sensazione di leggerezza senza sforzo e riesce a farti sentire bella e confortevole nello stesso tempo.

Dato che mi piace definirmi come "maker" ho deciso di ... confezionarne uno.

Non avendo al momento sotto mano il jersey con stampa "chain link" caratteristico dei vestiti della von Furstenberg mi sono dovuta accontentare di una maglia di viscosa di medio peso con stampa astratta/animalier ed il cartamodello New Look 6674.

All'inizio l'idea mi spaventava ... ci vuole così poco per trasformare un vestito nella vestaglia della nonna. Non sapendo da dove cominciare mi sono iscritta al corso sul vestito incrociato della Craftsy. Sono rimasta un po' delusa - l'ho trovato un po' base e francamente un pizzico noioso. C'era ... c'é un cartamodello incluso nel corso ma sapendo che ci sarebbe voluto troppo per riceverlo dagli Stati Uniti, ho comprato il cartamodello della New Look, disponibile in PDF da scaricare e stampare a casa ... tutte le 120 pagine! L'ho scelto perché mi piaceva l'ampiezza della gonna ed il colletto.

In una delle prime lezioni del corso su Craftsy, l'insegnante spiega come ridurre la vestibilità proporzionalmente con il stretch factor (fattore di elasticità) del tessuto utilizzato. Il mio tessuto ha un stretch factor di 50 che corrisponde ad una riduzione della vestibilità del 3% - il che per me significava per esempio, circa 4cm sul giro vita ed il mio cartamodello di partenza includeva 9cm di vestibilità. La mia opinione è che il vestito incrociato dovrebbe avere un corpetto attillato altrimenti ... embhe ... è la vestaglia della nonna. Un indumento di jersey con 5cm vestibilità non è esattamente attillato. Ho dovuto ridurla ancora ... parecchio. In tutto penso di aver tolto tutti i 9cm di vestibilità e forse qualcosa in più perché la ripresa del tessuto da me utilizzato non è delle migliori.

Le istruzioni incluse nel cartamodello sono "essenziali". Ho tagliato il modello A con la manica del modello B; manica corta che ho modificato in 3/4 ed ho aggiunto un risvolto a spacco - se così si può chiamare. Mi piace il modo in cui si apre - lo trovo un dettaglio carino.

Ho dovuto modificare l'incavo manica (l’ho rimpicciolito) ed il colmo manica (modifica per spalla avanti). Non sono ancora soddisfatta al 100% del modo in cui ho adattato la spalla … è un lavoro in corso.
Dopo tutte queste modifiche il collo dietro è finito con l'essere troppo basso ed il colletto, che ho accorciato di circa 2-3cm non poggia propriamente sul collo. La prossima volta mi sa che dovrò risolvere il problema.

Non ho voluto utilizzare delle impunture esterne (topstitching) perciò ho impiegato tante impunture interne (understitching) sopratutto per tenere le paramonture nascoste al loro posto.

Invece del bottone di chiusura ho impiegato due ganci. Il tessuto e piuttosto pesante e con un solo punto di appoggio si sarebbe allungato e deformato.
La cosa che più non mi piace di questo cartamodello e la vita con le riprese e le cuciture e la cintura/finta fusciacca. Sicuramente hanno un loro perché in un vestito non stretch ma le trovo superflue in uno in maglina. Siete per caso a conoscenza di un cartamodello di vestito incrociato progettato per tessuti stretch?

Sono molto fiera degli orli ... Ho usato il punto per orlo "a otto" della Claire Shaeffer ... Ci sono volute 4 ore ma ne è valsa la pena!

Army Jacques

At last the final version of the RDC Jacques pants for my Steven Alan Look.

The fabric I ended up making these in, is a military green, vintage Trabaldo Togna wool gabardine. When I made my first Jacques I thought the gabardine I used was a bit too light to keep well the original drape - as Géraldine intended it. You might think this time I would have chosen a heavier one … nope I went even lighter. I’m trying to experiment with how different fabric qualities affect the drape of a garment and the overall look and feel. This fabric is soft, and has neither the stiffness nor the sharpness of the cotton gabardine I used previously but beautiful hand and an almost silk like feel to the touch.

Overall the mods I made were aimed at giving them a menswear military look. Last time because of my terrible french I did not understand that I was supposed to cut a size larger so I cut a 38. This time I cut a 40. Either because of the lighter fabric or because of too much yoga, they were way too roomy and I had to take them in at the sides. I took the pictures without a belt but normally I would wear them with one - they are still pretty loose. With autumn in mind I raised the waistline so I replaced the shaped waistband with a straight one that I gave some shape by steaming.

The zipper I bought was a tad too long and due to sheer laziness I didn’t shortened it, so it ends up almost between my legs and adds an awkward stiffness to the front crotch. I also managed to switch left and right while cutting…

Fabric: Light 100% wool gabardine
Notions: Zipper, cotton lining fabric for the pockets, hook and eye.
Mods: Raised the waist line; replaced the button fly with a zipper fly; made two double welt back pockets and added buttons to them; replaced the shaped waistband with a straight one with belt loops and a hook and eye fastening; lowered the hem.

Note on the back pockets: this is the second time I end up placing them too high and too far at the sides. (see the Urban Safari Shorts). It’s because I do not pay enough attention and when placing them… I do not account for the seam-allowances. :( I’m seriously considering putting up a sign on my studio saying REMEMBER YOU HAVE SEAM-ALLOWANCE!

I’m not so pleased how these turned out or better I’m pleased with the pants, I like wearing them, I hate the pictures. The fabric is beautiful but drapes too much for the style of the pants. They say you are supposed to listen to the fabric, it will tell you what it wants to be made into. Too bad it’s a language I do not understand yet and it’s frustrating. I guess it needs a looser style - a wide leg trouser to look its best.

Overall they are great as a transitional piece. The fabric is light but the wool is warm enough on the skin, really suitable for the more chilly end of summer evenings and first autumn days.
I always found the transitional outfits more complicated and often end up being dressed inappropriately. I’m either too warm or too cold. I guess layering is the key… How do you manage your transitional wardrobe…. any tips?

Army Jacques

Era ora! Ecco la versione finale del pantalone Jacques della RDC per il mio Look Steven Alan.

Tra pensa e ripensa ho scelto una gabardina vintage di lana vergine Trabaldo Togna, verde militare. Il tessuto che ho usato per il primo paio mi era sembrato un po' troppo leggero per tenere bene il drappeggio originale - così come pensato da Géraldine. Verrebbe spontaneo dedurre che questo giro avrei scelto uno più pesante ... invece no ... questo tessuto è ancora più leggero. Sto provando a sperimentare come diverse qualità di tessuto incidono sul drappeggio di un capo, sulla vestibilità e sull'aspetto. Questo tessuto è morbido e non ha la rigidità ne la stessa capacità di tenere la piega della gabardina di cottone usata in precedenza. Ha una bellissima mano e sembra quasi setta a toccarlo.

Le modifiche che ho apportato al cartamodello originale erano mirate a dargli un aspetto da capo militare maschile. La volta scorsa per via del mio francese scarso ho ignorato l'indicazione di Geraldine di tagliare una taglia in più ed ho tagliato la mia 38. Questa volta ho tagliato una 40. O per via del tessuto più leggero o per eccesso di yoga il fatto sta che alla fine la 40 si è rivelata troppo larga e ho dovuto riprendere i pantaloni sui fianchi. Li ho fotografati senza cintura ma normalmente per poterli portare devo assolutamente indossarne una ... se non voglio sembrare uno di quei ragazzini con le brache a "mezzachiappa". Con l'autunno in mente li ho alzati in vita e ho rimpiazzato la cintura modellata con una dritta alla quale ho dato forma con il vapore.

La zip che ho comprato era troppo lunga e per pura pigrizia non l'ho accorciata, perciò finisce quasi in mezzo alle gambe aggiungendo una rigidità antiestetica al cavallo davanti. Inoltre sono riuscita ad invertire la parti destra sinistra mentre tagliavo...

Mod: Alzati in vita; patta con zip invece di quella con bottoni; due tasche a doppio battente e chiusura a bottone; cintura dritta con passanti; chiusura con gancio; abbassato l’orlo.

Nota sulle tasche dietro: questa è la seconda volta che le sto posizionando troppo in alto e verso i lati (vedi i Pantaloncini Urban Safari). La spiegazione sta nel fatto che ho la testa tra le nuvole e mi dimentico i margini di cucitura. :( .. Sto prendendo seriamente in considerazione di mettere nel mio studio un'insegna con su scritto RICORDATI I MARGINI DI CUCITURA.

Non sono super contenta di come sono venuti ... o meglio ... mi piacciono i pantaloni, mi piace portarli... non mi piacciono in foto. Il tessuto è molto bello però drappeggia troppo per questa linea. Dicono che devi ascoltare il tessuto, che ti dirà cosa vuole diventare... purtroppo in una lingua che non capisco ancora molto bene. Suppongo il taglio che meglio metterebbe in risalto questo tessuto sarebbe uno più ampio.

Tutto sommato sono un gran pezzo di transizione. Il tessuto è si leggerò, ma la lana è calda sulla pelle e si adatta meravigliosamente alle sere di fine estate in preludio di autunno.
Ho sempre trovato l'abbigliamento di transizione il più difficile e spesso finisco con l'essere vestita in maniera inadeguata - o ho troppo caldo, o troppo freddo. Presumo che la chiave sia vestirsi a modi "cipolloska"... Voi come gestite il vostro guardaroba di transizione ... Qualche idea?

Burda V-Neckline Dress

This post should be better entitled “The Tortured Dress”. Let’s start with the fabric. It’s a light Dolce&Gabbana viscose knit with a soft hand and a slight shine. Because when I asked for 2 meters they asked for a kidney in exchange, I had to settle for the 1.5 meters my budget could take. The pattern - Burda V-Neckline Dress 09/2012 #124 calls for 1.70m of fabric so I figured I would make it sleeveless. The instructions are minimal. Because of the construction of the neck and waist bands you have to sew it almost all together to be able to fit it.

I used clear elastic on the shoulder seams and the outer edges of the neck and waist bands to stabilise them and get them to lay flat.
By mistake I cut the neckbands (made out of interfaced black viscose knit) on crossgrain and didn’t realised it until they were attached. I had to start all over again. Picking apart serged edges on light knit fabric must be the "dream" of every sewer.
Matching the black bands at the side was a trial and error process and had to be done using hand basting.

The 40cm side zipper was to stiff for the fabric and interfered with the drape of the skirt so I took it down and put in a 25cm invisible zipper that hits just bellow the waist.
When the bodice and the skirt were pretty much finished I realised that the dress needed the long sleeves. Without them the proportions were all wrong and it looked old somehow. There was no way I could cut the sleeves from the fabric I had left so decided to split the sleeve pattern vertically in three and glue the underarm parts together so I was left with two pattern pieces (the one with the sleeve cap longer and the one with the underarm part shorter) that I could fit on my scraps of fabric. The fabric print helps concealing the seams on the sleeves. When trying to attach the sleeves I discovered that the ease in the sleeve caps was huge and there was no way I could modify them so puffed sleeves it is. Basted the sleeves in place tried it on … terrible fit… took them down … deepened the front armhole curve … by mistake basted them back to front … tried them… perfect fit. I decided not to insist further.

Vestito Burda con Scollo a V

Questo post dovrebbe essere intitolato “Compromessi ed Errori”. Cominciamo dal tessuto. E’ una maglina leggera in viscosa stampata Dolce&Gabbana con una mano molto morbida. Quando ho chiesto 2 metri mi hanno chiesto in cambio un rene perciò mi sono dovuta accontentare del metro e mezzo consentito dal mio budget. Il Cartamodello - Vestito Burda con Scollo a V 09/2012 #124 richiede 1.70m di tessuto, di conseguenza, per farmi bastare il mio metro e mezzo ho pensato di realizzarlo senza maniche. Le istruzioni sono minime - stile Burda. A causa della costruzione del collo e della vita bisogna confezionarlo quasi tutto per poterlo adattare.

Per stabilizzare le cuciture delle spalle e lo scollo ho usato del nastro elastico invisibile Framilon da 8 mm - aiuta anche a mantenere piatto e aderente al corpo il bordo dello scollo.
Per sbaglio ho tagliato le fasce del collo (in maglina di viscosa nera stabilizzata con fliselina a maglia) perpendicolari al drittofilo e non mi sono resa conto del errore finche non erano già cucite. Ho dovuto cominciare il tutto da capo. Disfare cuciture fatte con la tagliacuci su maglina leggera dev’essere il “sogno” di ogni sarta.
Far combaciare i bordi neri sui lati è stato un processo del tipo prova-riprova in quale sono stati coinvolti metri interi di imbastitura a mano.

La chiusura a lampo (sulla laterale) da 40cm era troppo rigida ed interferiva con il drappeggio della gonna quindi l’ho tolta ed ho usato una cerniera invisibile da 25cm che arriva appena sotto la vita.
Quando il corpetto e la gonna erano quasi finite e cucite assieme mi sono resa conto che il vestito aveva bisogno di maniche. Senza maniche (lunghe) le proporzioni erano sbagliate ed il vestito aveva un aria “vecchia”. Non ci fu verso di tagliare le maniche in un unico pezzo con i pochi resti di tessuto a mia disposizione dunque ho deciso di dividere il cartamodello in tre strisce ed incollare due pezzi lungo la cucitura originale. Ho ottenuto in questo modo delle maniche composte da due pezzi che sono riuscita a tagliare dalle strisce di tessuto rimaste. La stampa del tessuto aiuta a nascondere le cuciture delle maniche - una davanti ed una dietro. Quando ho provato a cucire le maniche al corpetto ho scoperto che avrei dovuto misurare prima l’incavo. Il colmo manica includeva troppa lentezza per il mio tessuto. Essendo impossible tagliarle nuovamente mi sono dovuta accontentare di maniche “leggermente a sbuffo”. Ho imbastito le maniche… ho provato il vestito … stavano malissimo… le ho tolte … ho allargato l’incavo davanti … per sbaglio ho imbastito le maniche avanti-dietro … provato … benissimo .. deciso di non insistere sul perché e come.

Carme with a touch of…

… Victorian Prairie Chic ... of course … just a hint though, a smidge …it still has the beating heart of a Carme blouse. Initially I wanted to modify it just a little and then, of course, as per my usual, I got carried away. We already know Pauline Alice's Carme is a great pattern. Amazing instances of it keep popping up all over the home sewing community. I made a preparatory muslin sometime ago so this post is going to be all about mods and pictures.

Pattern: Carme Blouse by Pauline Alice Patterns

Main Fabric: White cotton batiste. From the pictures, with the light reflecting and all, you can't tell but it's quite light and shear - not organza shear but I still had to wear a skin coloured bra underneath. This has been the lightest fabric I've ever worked with, so I had to figure how to adjust thread tension and foot pressure to avoid puckering (especially with the thick silk thread I used on the bib). Better experiment first on cotton battiste than some silk chiffon, I guess.

Contrast Fabric: Bleached cotton/linen canvas. I wanted something heavier and with a coarser appearance for the neckband and the cuffs. Of course I had the idea around midnight… of course I had no such fabric so I the fabric I used was actually untreated paining canvas I had in my studio. I think it works, visually speaking, it adds a sort of rusticity to the whole thing and actually is really soft on the skin. My original idea was to try and distress it but it was so much hassle attaching the neckband that after having done it, I kinda lost my nerve.

Haberdashery: Coats Epic 140 thread, Coats Seta Reale (silk) thread for the bib, 11 small (8.5 mm) mother of pearl buttons and half of a snap fastener that I dyed using green enamel.

Mods: Modified the pleating of the bib - I wanted to give it some movement so I made 10mm pleats spaced 10 and 15mm and I used the silk thread to sew the pleats. Made the two parts of the front tower placket the same width - I was afraid the underlap would not otherwise support the weight of the buttons. Added a back yoke to give it more of a shirt appearance. Made a jewell neckline with a neckband instead of the mandarin collar. Made sleeve tower plackets - I don’t know what to call them - half tower, single tower… Basically only the overlap has a tower, the other edge is rolled.

Fitting: I did a forward shoulder adjustment and lowered the bust dart a bit (some wishful thinking was involved - I should have lowered it more).

That is pretty much all I did.
The fact is, I like the Carme so much I feel the need “to do things to it”. As I am writing this the idea of getting some silk chiffon in there, keeps buzzing through my brain ;).

Carme con un tocco di…

… stile prateria vittoriana ... ovviamente … giusto un tocco …ha ancora il cuore pulsante di una blusa Carme. All’inizio volevo modificarla giusto un po’ ma ovviamente con quella che sta cominciando ad essere una abitudine la situazione mi è sfuggita di mano. Si sa che il cartamodello della blusa Carme di Pauline Alice è disegnato a regola d’arte, non molto fa ne ho cucito una tela di prova, perciò in questo post parlerò solo delle modifiche.

C.M.: Blusa Carme di Pauline Alice Patterns

Tessuto: Batista bianca di cottone. Dalle immagini, con il bianco che riflette la luce, non è veramente evidente la sottigliezza e la trasparenza del tessuto - non è minimamente trasparente come l’organza ma ho dovuto comunque mettere un reggi color pelle. Questo è il tessuto più leggero che io abbia mai provato a cucire (fino adesso) perciò ho dovuto imparare come regolare la tensione del filo e la pressione del piedino per evitare di increspare il tessuto (specialmente con il filo di seta più grosso che ho usato per la pettorina). In fin dei conti meglio esercitasi su batista di cottone che su chiffon di seta.

Tessuto a contrasto: Tela di lino/cottone sbiancata. Volevo qualcosa di più pesante e grezzo (non al tatto ma alla vista - in verità è piuttosto morbido sulla pelle) per il collaretto e per i polsini. Ovviamente l’idea mi è venuta a mezzanotte e non avendo in casa un tessuto simile mi sono guardata attorno, ho visto della tela da pittura non trattata e ho deciso di usarla. Mi sembra che funzioni, aggiunge al tutto una nota di rusticità. L’idea originale prevedeva provare a logorarlo, a invecchiarlo usando carta abrasiva e quant’altro ma dopo tutto il lavoro che ci è voluto per attaccare il collaretto l’ho riconsiderata.

Merceria: Filo Coats Epic 140, filo Coats Seta Reale per la pettorina, 11 bottoni piccoli (8.5 mm) in madre perla e mezzo automatico che ho tinto con smalto verde.

Mod: Ho modificato le pieghe della pettorina - ho voluto dargli più “movimento” e ho usato il filo di setta per cucire le pieghe. Ho fatto le due parti dell’abbottonatura davanti di larghezza uguale - avevo paura che se la parte interna fosse stata più sottile, come prevedeva l’originale, non avrebbe retto il peso dei bottoni. Ho aggiunto un carré dietro per farla sembrare più camicia. Ho rimpiazzato il collo alla coreana con il collaretto che vedete, che non so come si chiama e nemmeno se ha un nome. Ho aggiunto fessini alle maniche - non so neanche questi come si chiamano … mezzi fessini (!?) … visto che la parte sotto è arrotolata.

Adattamento: Ho fatto una modifica per spalla avanti e abbassato (no abbastanza) la ripresa sul busto.

Questo è più o meno il tutto.
Il fatto è che il cartamodello Carme mi piace così tanto che sento il bisogno di giocarci ancora. Mentre sto scrivendo mi sta gironzolando per la testa l’idea di metterci dentro del chiffon di seta ;).

Urban Safari Shorts

Do you recognise the pattern? It would be really difficult. These were supposed to be Jacques’ little brother. A shorts version of the RDC’s Jacques pants pattern. Why Jacques … well I loved it the first time I made them, got them fitted pretty good so … why not. I figured I could just cut the leg, enlarge it a bit and put a zipper on them. The buttoned fly is very distinct and right now for me having it in two garments would be a bit much.

I had a tiny piece of chino fabric (part of the small stash I got from my fiancee’s mother) and I imagined … I can do it. I couldn’t. My choices were: make them really short - but I wanted to be able to wear them in public… they had to have some decency. Sacrifice the cuff - which actually gives them some stability and the safari vibe. Get rid of the particular shape of the belt a make a simple one. I chose the simple belt. Belt loops would be nice … was my next thought. Flat felled seams and double lines of topstitching sounded good. Somehow I felt that the jeans like stitching won’t go very well, stylistically speaking, with the front pleats so I absorbed them into the front pockets and had to change their shape to do so. I wanted to learn to make a different kind of welt pocket… so I made two - single welt. Made them slanted and managed somehow to position them badly … they are so high up, they almost touch the belt but let’s pretend it was a design choice.

The fabric has a very soft hand and quite a give and after almost finishing them I realised that with the changes in the belt and pleats, they sat a little too low on my “waist” so I decided to take them in a little at the sides … having already made the side flat felled seams it was no fun at all. As a result the stitching at the sides is a bit wonky especially over the bulkier parts.
When the time came to make the buttonhole I realised I did not have a suitable button. What I had was one of those metallic hook invisible things (have no idea what they are called and where it came from… sometimes I buy stuff just in case). They are hold in place by a metallic plate placed inside the belt and topstitching that part of the belt was out of the question so I had to do it by hand.

In conclusion I went and got myself a couple of big coloured seam rippers… The tiny white one that came standard with my sewing machine kept falling, rolling under things, hiding under pieces of fabric and with this particular project I spent almost the same amount of time looking for the seam ripper as actually sewing.

The upside of it all is in the end I managed to make a pair of amazingly comfortable and stylish, why not, shorts. I’m so pleased with them that I decided to enter them to the Shorts-on-the-Line event - if I can actually figure how.

Since getting the sewing bug …not so long ago… I’ve made: one pair of leggings/pants crossbreed, one pair of leggings/skirt crossbreed, one pair of leggings, one pair of knee pants, one pair of slacks, a pair of shorts (these ones)… I’ve already cut my fabric for my next pair of slacks and trying to draft my custom jeans pattern. And to think I got into sewing because I wanted to make some dresses and not only make but actually wear dresses. I wanted to be more feminine… and now that I’m sewing I’m still making pants… I absolutely have to put a dress on my sewing list!

UPDATE: I won FIRST PRIZE in the Shorts-on-the Line event!!!

Pantaloncini Urban Safari

Riconoscete il cartamodello? Sarebbe difficile. Questi avrebbero dovuto essere il fratellino più piccolo dei Jacques. Una versione pantaloncini corti del cartamodello Jacques della RDC. Perché Jacques? Mi sono piaciuti così tanto la prima volta che li ho cuciti (li ho adattati benino direi) … e allora perché no. Ho pensato di poter tagliare e allargare la gamba e rimpiazzare i bottoni con una zip. La chiusura con bottoni si distingue molto e almeno per me, in questo momento averla su due paia di pantaloni sarebbe un po’ troppo.

Avevo un piccolissimo pezzo di tessuto chino (parte del “stash” ricevuto dalla mamma del mio fidanzato) e credevo di potercela fare. Non è stato esattamente così. Le scelte erano: farli veramente corti - ma avrei preferito poterli portare in pubblico, dovevano mantenere una qualche decenza. Rinunciare al risvolto - che li da tenuta e quel stile “safari”. Rinunciare alla forma particolare della cintura e farne una semplice. Ho scelto la cintura semplice. Aggiungerci dei passanti sarebbe carino - è stato il mio seguente pensiero. Le cuciture ribattute e le doppie impunture sembravano interessanti da aggiungere. Visto che le pieghe davanti non mi parevano molto in linea, stilisticamente parlando, con le cuciture tipo jeans ho pensato di includerle nelle tasche cambiandone leggermente la forma. Volevo imparare a fare un altro tipo di tasca a filetto perciò ne ho fatte due a filetto unico. Le ho fatte leggermente inclinate e non so come sono riuscita a posizionarle male. Sono così in alto che quasi toccano la cintura - chiamiamola però scelta stilistica.

Il tessuto ha una mano molto morbida e dopo aver quasi finito il tutto mi sono accorta che aveva ceduto un po. Aggiunte le modifiche sulla cintura e sulle pieghe il risultato era che i pantaloncini scivolavano un po troppo in basso perciò ho deciso di riprenderli ai lati. Non molto divertente con le cuciture ribattute già fatte. Le nuove sono, a dir poco, ubriache sopratutto nelle parti più spesse.
Arrivata alla asola mi sono accorta di non avere un bottone adatto. Avevo invece uno di quei ganci invisibili di metallo (non so come si chiamano e non so come mai ce l’avevo - avvolte compro cose giusto in caso). Questi ganci vengono fissati ad una piccola piastra di metallo che si posiziona all’interno della cintura. Non c’è stato verso di fare le impunture a macchina in quella zona … ho dovuto farle a mano.

In conclusione sono andata a comprare un paio di scucirini grandi e colorati … Quello piccolo bianco in dotazione alla mia machina da cucire continuava a cadere, rotolare sotto cose, nascondersi sotto pezzi di tessuto. Questo progetto ho passato quasi lo stesso tempo a cercare lo scucirino che a cucire effettivamente.

Il lato positivo di tutta questa trafila è che alla fine mi ritrovo con un nuovo paio di pantaloncini incredibilmente confortevoli. Sono così contenta che ho deciso di inscriverli nel evento Shorts-on-a-Line.

Da quando mi sono presa il morbo del cucito …e non è da tanto tempo… ho cucito: un incrocio leggings/pantaloni, un incrocio leggings/gonna, un paio di leggings, un paio di pantaloncini al ginocchio, un paio di pantaloni, un paio di pantaloncini corti (questi)… ho già tagliato il tessuto per un nuovo paio di pantaloni e sto provando a disegnare un paio di jeans. A pensare che ho iniziato a cucire perché volevo fare qualche vestitino - fare e indossare. Volevo essere più femminile. Invece sto continuando con i pantaloni. Devo assolutamente mettere qualche vestitino sulla mia lista dei progetti!

Learning, for me means taking lots of notes, making lots of sketches. This generates lots of messy notebook pages. I thought about sharing some of them with you... of course after having eliminated the "messiness" :). I hope at least some of you might find them useful. There will be tips or techniques that I found useful and worth remembering. I will be collecting them under the "My Notebook" section of this blog.

I chose to style them as infographics because it's a style that better reflects my actual notebook.

Vi presento: “Il mio Quaderno”

Imparare, per me significa prendere tantissimi appunti, fare tantissimi schizzi. Tutto questo genera pagine e pagine di quaderno, piuttosto disordinate. Ho pensato di condividere con voi alcune tra queste - ovviamente dopo aver eliminato il “disordine” :). Spero che almeno qualcuna tra voi le troverà utili. Ci saranno delle “dritte” e delle tecniche che ho trovato ad essere utili e da ricordare. Saranno raccolte nella sezione "My Notebook" di questo blog.
Ho scelto di presentarle sotto forma di “infografiche” perché è uno stille che meglio rappresenta il mio “vero” quaderno.
Se le trovate interessanti potete pinnare, stampare, scaricare, raccogliere….

Attenzione! Dato che io ho imparato la maggior parte dei termini “del mestiere” in inglese avvolte non conosco i termini giusti in italiano perciò mi tocca adattarli dall’inglese, magari con risultati piuttosto buffi. Le vostre correzioni sono più che benvenute :) !

Jacques Pants - RDC

République du Chiffon - Jacques Pants

These are my first me made slacks. The pattern - Jacques by République du Chiffon - is actually rated 4/4, and so this must be the most complex piece of apparel I’ve ever made. Yet it did not fell like it was.

The pattern is beautifully drafted. The booklet (only in french - and my french is high school level) is a bit essential for a beginner like me but the photographic tutorial on their site “Sewing the Jacques Pants from A to Z” is very well made and I had no trouble at all following it even with my limited language skills.

I used a cotton gabardine maybe a little bit too light for the cut of these pants. I do not know, yet, my fabrics well ... but hopefully I'll get there.

The main fitting challenge I had to face was correcting for my rather pronounced lumbar hyperlordosis (sway back) that causes a pelvic tilt. In terms of fitting it translates into a shorter front crotch and a longer back crotch and also the higher positioning of the buttocks fullness (mine is even higher cause I'm a runner so I really had to scoop that back crotch). I didn't adjust for a fuller front thigh because the front pleats took care of the problem (even thou next time I will add like 5mm to the intake - for extra comfort :) ). After fitting everything to the best of my knowledge .... I forgot to move the back darts and the welt pocket... their positioning causes some awkwardness... I feel like hitting myself.

This is supposed to be actually a test run for my “final” pair, part of the Steven Alan Look I’m making. They were a first for so many things: my first fly front, my first double welt pocket, my first slant pocket …. You can find the “in progress” pictures on Instagram.

I really enjoyed making them … and I love them with a pair of heels. The 7/8 cut + the heels combo elongate the figure a lot. Overall I find this pattern to be very flattering on the body.

Pantaloni Jacques - République du Chiffon

Questo è il primo paio di pantaloni (nel vero senso della parola) fatto da me. Il cartamodello - Jaques della République du Chiffon - è per la verità quotato 4/4 difficoltà perciò questo deve essere il più complesso capo di abbigliamento che io abbia mai realizzato finora. Nonostante ciò non mi è sembrato così.

Il design è molto bello e preciso. Il libretto delle istruzioni che accompagna il cartamodello (disponibile soltanto in francese purtroppo - ed il mio francese non supera livello liceo) è un po troppo essenziale per una principiante come me. Fortunatamente la guida fotografica “Cucire il Pantalone Jacques della A alla Z” disponibile sul loro sito, è fatta molto bene e non ho riscontrato nessuna difficoltà nel seguirla nonostante le mie conoscenze linguistiche limitate.

Ho usato una gabardina di cotone, forse un po troppo leggera per il taglio di questi pantaloni. Ancora non sono molto ferrata sui tessuti … ma ci arriverò.

Il problema principale per quel che riguarda l’adattamento è stato dover correggere per la mia iperlordosi lombare che causa un’inclinazione della pelvi. In termini pratici la cosa si traduce nel dover modificare le lunghezze del cavallo: accorciare quella davanti e allungare quella dietro. Lo stesso difetto lombare sommato con il fatto che sonno una runner fa si che il punto di massima pienezza dei glutei sia più alto perciò ho dovuto scavare un bel po la linea del cavallo dietro. Non ho dovuto modificato per le cosce piene perché le pieghe davanti hanno eliminato il problema (anche se la prossima volta ci aggiungerò 5mm - più spazio, più comfort). Dopo aver adattato tutto al meglio delle mie capacità … ho dimenticato di spostare le pince dietro e la tasca … mi viene da prendermi a schiaffi da sola.

Questo paio di pantaloni doveva in realtà essere una prova per quello “finale” parte del mio Look Steven Alan.
Sono stati la prima volta per tante cose: la mia prima patta per pantaloni, la mia prima tasca doppio filetto, la mia prima tasca alla francese…come al solito le immagini “in progress” e dei particolari le trovate su Instagram.

Make It Work Michelle!

Since seeing Sara’s take on the Burda Michelle Skirt I’ve wanted one… in linen.

Because I have only 30-40cm strips of linen cut grainwise (the same I used for the Linen Knee Pants and the Linen Top) I had to find a solution to the width problem …to “make it work” - as would Tim Gunn say (…my latest entertainment during sewing being watching Project Runway DVDs).

Another problem I had to face is finding a way to bypass some of the intrinsic characteristics of linen. The linen I use deforms on crossgrain an insane amount and in a skirt with a style not exactly fitted and not exactly loose as this one when you sit it would stretch a lot… I was afraid that when you stand up then would sag creating an unpleasant “baggy wrinkled cloth” effect and I’m into sustainable fashion not homelessness.

It took some pattern slashing and around 6 meters of bias tape of various sizes to solve both my problems (width and structure).

The bias tape (cotton … I couldn’t find a finer one so I had to make do) acts very much like boning giving the whole thing some structure and rigidity.

I love the way it moves! My nephew kept trying to make me twirl.

Make It Work Michelle!

Da quando ho visto la Gonna Burda Michelle cucita da Sara ne ho voluto una… in lino.

Dato che ho solo delle strisce da 30-40cm di lino tagliato in altezza (lo stesso lino che ho usato per i Pantaloni e per il Top in Lino) ho dovuto trovare una soluzione …ho dovuto “farla funzionare” . Fallo funzionare! ( in inglese Make it Work )è una delle frasi preferite da Tim Gunn in Project Runway (…ultimamente mi diverto a guardare i DVD di Project Runway mentre sto cucendo).

Un altro problema che ho dovuto affrontare è stato quello di superare alcune delle caratteristiche intrinseche del tessuto. Il lino che sto usando si deforma tantissimo in larghezza perciò in una gonna come questa, non esattamente aderente e non esattamente ampia sui fianchi, quando siedi perde la sua forma e poi diventa improponibile sopratutto da dietro - a me sta a cuore l’idea della moda sostenibile non di sembrare una senza tetto.

Ci sono voluti un paio di tagli sul cartamodello e circa 6 metri di nastro sbieco per risolvere entrambi problemi (larghezza e struttura).

Il nastro sbieco (in cottone … ho cercato uno in un tessuto più fine ma nella mia città è introvabile perciò mi sono dovuta accontentare) si comporta in una maniera molto simile ad una ossatura (penso il termine inglese “boning” si traduca con ossatura … non ho la più pallida idea).

Mi piace moltissimo come si muove. Mio nipote insisteva nel farmi girare.

The "Gelato" Socks

The “Gelato” Socks

Because it’s summer my hiking boots socks got upgraded to the “gelato” socks. I love a little bit of colour with the dull brown of my comfortable, technical yet not exactly stylish boots.

Pattern: Latvian Socks by Lizbeth Upitis published in Vogue Knitting Ultimate Sock Book
Yarn: Mafil Daniela 100% preshrunk pure wool
Colours: 425 Pistachio & 442 Coral (I pretty much kept the colourway in the original pattern)
The socks are knitted from the cuff down and have a scalloped edge, heel flap and wedge toe.

I used four bamboo dpns instead of the recommended two circular needles so I had to adapt the pattern. BTW the charts are misnumbered so be sure to check the errata. I didn’t know there was one (did not checked Ravelry) so I had to figure them out; as they just didn’t seem right.

The photos were taken near the Pradis Green Caves during the “Prehistoric Days”, which are two sundays of workshops (mainly for children) conducted by archeology and palaeontology professors and students. Because me and my sister’s in law husband were the only ones not involved with the workshops I seized the opportunity and asked him to help me with the photos … so … thank you Michele!

I am not exactly what you would call a girly girl and yet I liked the color scheme and the harts pattern and that is what determined me do knit these socks and call them the “Gelato” socks.

And because we’re talking summer and gelato I’ve been having a song stuck in my head for the last couple of hours … It’s actually the soundtrack for a well known italian gelato brand:

I Calzini “Gelato”

Visto che è estate i miei normali calzini da trekking sono stati rimpiazzati dalla versione “Gelato”. Mi piace un po di colore per ravvivare il marrone noioso delle mie comode, tecniche ma per niente “fashion”, scarpe da trekking.

Modello: Calzini Lettoni di Lizbeth Upitis pubblicati in Vogue Knitting Ultimate Sock Book
Filato: Mafil Daniela 1100% pura lana irrestringibile
Colori: 425 Pistacchio e 442 Corallo (lo schema cromatico e molto vicino a quella del modello originale)
I calzino sono lavorati dal bordo verso la punta (top down) hanno il bordo a smerlo, tallone a tassello e punta a cuneo chiusa con una chiusura tubolare (Kitchener).

Ho usato un gioco di ferri in bamboo invece dei due ferri circolari consigliati dal modello perciò ho dovuto adattare le istruzioni. A proposito: i schemi sono numerati in modo sbagliato, non sapevo che esistesse un errata (non ho verificato su Ravelry) e ho dovuto fare e disfare perché non tornava.

Le fotografie sono state scattate nei pressi delle Grotte di Pradis durante “Le Giornate della Preistoria”, che sono due domeniche di laboratori (rivolti principalmente ai bambini) sotto la supervisione di professori e studenti di archeologia e paleontologia. Dato che io ed il marito di mia cognata eravamo li in qualità di “accompagnatori” le nostre metà coinvolte con i laboratori e l’organizzazione, ho approfittato e le ho chiesto di darmi una mano con le foto … perciò … grazie Michele!

Non sono esattamente una ragazza “rosa” e nonostante ciò mi sono piaciuti i colori ed il modello a cuori ... per questo li ho scelti e li ho chiamati “Gelato”

Dato che parliamo di estate e gelato c’è una canzone che mi sta girando per la testa da un paio di orette … e sorpresa è proprio quella del gelato:
