BRACE YOURSELF

Camp was an exciting and challenging time. We had fun connecting with friends and connecting deeper with God. We were challenged to take baby steps toward a lifestyle of confesssion(being honest with self, God, and others), repentance(turning away from sin and towards Christ), and total dependence on God. The truth is that when you brace yourself with these three areas you start to truly live out a life of forgivness and freedom. We love the easy stuff Jesus teaches but many of His words are tough to swallow. What does Jesus mean when he says:

· “Leave the dead to bury their own dead”

· “So therefore, any one of you who does not renounce all that he has cannot be my disciple”

· “If anyone comes to me and does not hate his own father and mother and wife and children and brothers and sisters, yes, and even his own life, he cannot be my disciple”

· “You lack one thing: go, sell all that you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me”

What is the cost of following Jesus? What do you do when Jesus Exposes your motives, your heart, your thoughts? Join us this semester as we learn how being Exposed actually saves us.

Fall Camp has come and gone!

We recently finished up fall camp at Camp Widjiwagan and it was awesome. We dealt with the issue of "storms" in our lives and how to deal with them. It was a great series for all of us to think about and go through together. We have had a lot of hardships within our group and it was really beneficial to hear from other people who also have had hard times and can come out and say God is good. We often can with head knowledge say that God is good but sometimes emotionally it is hard to feel that way. I think this weekend was a great time for all of us to come out with some of the things that we trully are dealing with at our core and get encouragement from one another to know that God is a good god. We also had a lot of great down time to do some activities throughout the day. Some of these activities included dodgeball, zip line, canoeing, & rip cord swing. The most active being dodgeball. All in all it was a great weekend and great community! Here are some more photos!

Fall Camp!

Storm Warning
It’s unavoidable… every one of us goes through storms. Sometimes the storms are big and cause lots of damage. Sometimes they rumble through and they are gone. So if a storm is going to happen .. whether it’s a death, a diagnosis, a divorce, or a break-up, how do you weather the storm? What do you hold onto when the storm hits?

Come join us this fall as we take our fall trip to Camp Widjiwagan with Brentwood Fellowship. We will be having two seperate camps for middle school and high school. Summer Time!!

Mexico!!

Early this summer, some of our students and our volunteers took a mission trip to Mexico. The upperclassmen were taken out into the country to work about an hour outside of Monterrey while the sophomores and freshman stayed in the city to do work. A lot of what they did was rebuilding and reconstructing. Everyone had a great time and has proclaimed it as the "highlight of their summer". Rock Climbing

Once July was underway, we took a trip to the Ocoee to go rock climbing, repelling, and tubing. It was a full day trip for us but everybody seemed to have had a great time. If you would like to see some of repelling photos taken they will also be on our website!

ReCreation Experience

We recently went to Asheville, NC for a spring break trip with our High School students. It was great time for everybody. We partnered with a ministry called ReCreation Experiences. Their vision is essentially to give help to the needy, poor, and handicapped through home repair. Their website is http://www.recreationexperiences.org/ where you can find out more about this awesome ministry.
We had a great time working with ReCreation! We spent the week living in a renovated elementary school and the staff there were great. We went to Mr. Edwards' (up top) home during the daytime and helped repair his yard and house. There was a great need to take down trees, and yank up ole' thorny vines. We sanded down the walls and ceiling on the inside then we painted it down with primer trying to get it ready for the next group to come and finish what we started. All in all at the very end, things really started to get a lot cleaner and Mr. Edwards had a decent living situation.
The greatest impact was not made through our toil and work even though we were able to help Mr. Edwards greatly. We took some time on the last day to sing happy birthday to Mr. Edwards and pray for him. When we finished we found Mr. Edwards in tears. It was a great thing to know that what he deeply needed was to simply believe that he was loved. Somehow God allowed us to show him exactly that...

80's Night!!!
We recently had a great time in our church garage by celebrating the 80's. It took everyone a little bit of time to get to dancin but we all learned that only thing we really had to be embarrassed about was our clothing and not dance moves... It was great evening to honor that great yet terrible decade that all Americans seemingly lost their sense of fashion, style, and especially music... Here's to the 80's!!!

Trust... Who do you trust? Family, Friends, Pastors, Teachers, etc.? How about Christ? Do you trust Him? Do you trust Him when you mess up, feel discouraged, figuring out life direction, or when you don't feel like He is there? If you don't... that's ok... He is still more than enough... even for our distrust. God has questions for us. Not the type of questions where He needs to figure something out... But the type of questions that we need in our lives to help us figure something out... Come join us as we look throughout God's word to see what He is asking us.

Fall Camp

We are excited to be headed to Fall Camp with our friends at Fellowship Bible Church in Brentwood in Nov. Horn's Creek (the camp) is located twenty minutes outside of Chattanooga. The cost of camp this year will be $85 and includes everything except travel meals. The theme is Vantage Point looking from different perspectives of Jesus' encounter with the Samaritan woman at the well (John 4). Space is limited this year and you will need to contact Chad to sign up by Nov. 2nd. More details in terms of what to pack, departure and return time coming soon!! Summer Sun!

This summer twenty-one of us had the wonderful opportunity to travel to Mexico on a missions trip. Before the trip began, we received rubberbands to remind us to be flexible and open to the culture change. Once in Mexico, we met our host families who gave us the best they could offer. Giving up their own comfort for ours, they gave us the master bedroom, bought matresses just so we wouldn't have to sleep on the floor. They borrowed DVD players and movies to entertain us. They cooked us meals and changed their schedules to fit ours. Their generosity was amazing! In fact, everyone in Mexico was very kind. When going to a store the person behind the counter would patiently try to understand what we wanted.

During the day, we would go to the church worksite and some would paint chairs, while others would work on construction. After work, we would have time to play soccer, go shopping, or just sit and enjoy the company of the host families. After a week in Mexico, it was time to go back home. We left Mexico partly happy to return home and see family and friends, but it was hard to leave those who had showed us more love and respect than we could imagine.

Later in June, we got together again and made a trip to Rock Island. A beautiful area, where one can jump off cliffs into the cool water. The sun was bright and it was a great day to jump. Then in July we soaked up some more sun when we went to the lake! With all this summer heat it's great to have the chance to spend sometime in the cool water. And just because we can't get enough of the sun and water, tomorrow we are going to raft the Ocoee! Can't wait to hit the rapids!

Every so often in life there comes a time for things to end. Even good things eventually come to a close. And with that in mind, I know you are all very distraught to find out that school is almost over... NAW!

This Sunday at FSM we will celebrate the finish of the school year. But with the celebration comes some sad news. Several of our leaders will be stepping down and leaving us. For some, this will be their last Sunday. Come celebrate the end of the school year with us, and help us send off leaders this Sunday.

In the wise words once uttered by Porky Pig... "A-bleh-bleh-bleh-blehde... That's all folks!"

Beyond the U

Disciple Now weekend is in the books, and what an awesome weekend it was! Several students made decisions this weekend to follow Christ. We were challenged by Afshin to live "Beyond the U", by the power of the Holy Spirit, the way Christ called us to live.

We heard Afshin's testimony of God's faithfulness through the cost he paid to follow Christ. Though his relationship with his earthly father was temporarily taken from him, he knew that his heavenly Father was there all the while. I hope you all were encouraged to hear from someone who counted the cost and found that it was worth every bit of that cost to follow Christ.

For those of you who made a decision this weekend, either to follow Christ for the first time, or to take the next step in your walk with Christ, now is a crucial time. Know that the road ahead is never easy or care free. There are always struggles and trials in our path, but through those times we grow in our faith and are reminded of how much we need the Lord.

I pray that each of us can move "Beyond the U" in the weeks ahead and live a life dependent on Christ.

This week at FSM we had a great reflection time on the meaning behind Easter. We talked about what it means to have life; drinking from the well that never runs dry. It is such a beautiful thing that we have the opportunity to serve a God who came and gave His life for us. But it is only when we take Christ's sacrifice personally and identify it with our sin that we can really understand how much he loves each one of us. I hope you all came away encouraged to find your life in Christ.

Make sure to stay tuned... we have a lot coming up in the next few weeks. This Friday is Good Friday and Sunday is Easter. Sunday morning FSM leaves for Biloxi, Mississippi to help the rebuilding efforts from Katrina. The following Sunday (the 30th) FSM will be hanging out with the Burmese students at 5 PM. Talk to Andy and Alissa if you want to go. In the meantime, we are gearing up for Disciple Now Weekend. Make sure to turn your $30 in soon if you plan on coming. It's going to be an awesome weekend!

Breaking News!!!

Disciple Now Weekend: Coming Soon to a ridiculously cool youth group near you!!! So we checked out the D-Now venue this morning, and I must say, it has some awesome potential! We have a rockin' band called Manic Bloom leading worship for us and a really cool speaker coming in for the weekend. We're going to partner with some other church youth groups to do D-Now, so it should be an exciting weekend.

The dates are April 11th-13th and the cost is $30. Sign up and bring your money ASAP!

In other news, this Sunday afternoon after church we will have another fundraiser for the FSM Mexico Mission Trip at Blue Coast Burrito from 11-2. Invite all your friends and family and come out and help us raise money. This time we get 25% of the proceeds!

News Flash: FSM students are the coolest on the planet

FSM is at the Church Office this week (Feb. 17th). Make sure you don't go to the YMCA, because we won't be there!

High School GameDay this past week was a blast! The Halo enthusiasts got their fill on four X Box 360s and projectors, while the rest enjoyed some card games.

Our next FSM event is the Biloxi Mission Trip. Make sure you've told Chad you are going and turned in your money ($80). The deadline to sign up is March 1st and there are only a few spots left.

Monday, February 18th plan on eating out at Chick-Fil-A and invite all your friends and family! We are doing a fundraiser in partnership with the creators of the chicken sandwich. From 5-8 PM 10% of their proceeds from every person that says they are with FSM will go toward the Mexico Mission Trip.

The "Why God?" series we are currently walking through, we know can be a difficult one. Please come to us or your leader and talk to us. We know several of you are walking through difficult times with family situations, friends, injuries, etc. and we want to be here for you. Let us know if you want to talk.

Super Bowl Sunday

This week is Super Bowl Sunday and FSM will be meeting at the YMCA at 5 PM for the game? So who's it going to be the Packers or Giants? Moss, Brady, and mad genius Bill or Eli, Toomer, and Strahan? Don't care about the game? Come hang out and laugh at the always funny commercials!

Don't forget to bring your $5 for pizza! Guys bring a 2 liter of your favorite drink and girls bring a dessert or appetizer.

February 8th at the Church Office at 7 PM is the High School GameDay. Bring your favorite game and join us for cards, video games, and even a board game or two.

February 18th we will be raising money for the Mexico Mission Trip by partnering with Chick-Fil-A. 10% of all proceeds from 5-8 PM of anyone saying they are with FSM that night will go toward the trip. Tell your family and friends to plan to eat at Chick-Fil-A on the 18th!

Ski Trip is in the Books

14 hours in a van, 2 pukes, some downhill ice skating, a near case of hypothermia, worship with a British accent, and a too-fast-talking preacher later and Ski Trip is officially in the books. Whew! Deep breath! We all made it back alive and ready for a nap!

Hopefully, you guys got something out of the message and worship this past weekend. We talked a lot about the love of God and how it reaches out to us even when we aren't looking for Him. Saturday night we talked about being "born again" and what Jesus really meant by this phrase. It is a beautiful picture of a new life being supernaturally birthed inside us. While the talk of punishment for sin is harsh and unnerving, the message of salvation and Christ taking our place on the "sin train" is an amazing testimony to the love of God.

We will not be meeting this Sunday, but Andy and Alissa are heading up a hang out time with the students from the Burmese Church. Stay tuned for more details and talk to them Sunday after church to see what the plan is.

Sunday February 3rd will be the Super Bowl Party at the YMCA. We will be having drinks and food, hanging out, watching the game, and laughing at the hysterical commercials. This is a great time to bring a friend to hang out with us for the night. More details to follow...

Friday February 8th will be High School GameDay. We will hang out for the night at the church office playing all your favorite games with 30 of your best friends!

Make sure to let me (Andrew) or Chad know this week if you plan on going to Biloxi with us over Spring Break. There are only 20 spots available, and the trip is filling up fast! The dates for that trip are March 23-27 and the cost is $80.

Cowboy Christmas is This Week!

Sunday December 16, 2007... The 2nd Annual Coooowwwwwboooooyyyyyy Christmas! Bum bum bum bum bum bum bum bum... Ok, but seriously... Cowboy Christmas is this Sunday night from 6:00-8:30. Make sure you don't show up at 7 or you will miss approximately 40% of the festivities! The middle school and high school will be together for the night. We will have BBQ, line dancing, and dessert (BYOD... bring your own DESSERT!). Make sure you invite your friends to come hang out with us! You can bring your Christmas presents to me on Sunday if you like (totally kidding!).

We will be announcing the winner for the elephant naming contest this week. My entry was nixed so I'll be protesting the process! If you want to donate money to help adopt a Compassion child, bring it with you Sunday and put it in ________ the elephant.

FSM will be taking a break for the holiday formerly known as CHRISTmas. We will not meet December 23 or 30. Enjoy time with family and friends this Christmas.

Broomball Pics, Cowboy's, and Saint Nick

Our annual night of Broomball was November 17th. We had a blast. What's more fun than running around a hockey rink in tennis shoes?! Here's some pictures from the night. There are a bunch more up on the FSM section of the FBC website. We spent the night afterwards and stayed up 'til the crack of dawn!

These next couple Sundays we'll be studying in 2 Timothy 3:14-17 and 4:6-8 if you want to read it and prepare yourself.
Cowboy Christmas is December 16th. We'll be line dancing the night away at the YMCA. We'll have a caller there and maybe Nathan will teach us a new rocket scientist trick this year! We'll have some door prizes you won't want to miss! Cowboy Christmas will start at 6 PM. Make a special note because this is not our usual meeting time. If you show up at 7 you'll miss half the fun!

FSM will be breaking for 2 weeks over the holidays as many of the leaders and students we know will be traveling for Christmas. After Cowboy Christmas, we will not meet the 23rd or the 30th. We will resume meeting in January. Enjoy the time with your families, the break from school, and the chance to give (and receive) this Christmas.

Remember Jesus this Christmas as he came into a world where there was no room in the inn. Make a point to make room for him in your own heart.

The Birth of Jesus

The Shepherds and the Angels

A Great Read

This is from a post on the blog of Shaun Groves, a Nashville-based Christian artist. He has been in Ethiopia the past week with Compassion International. This can be found here. I thought it was worth sharing. Shaun writes:

On the way to the restaurant Wess (the president of Compassion International) told me a story. In the 1980’s, when Ethiopia was under communist rule and the Church was forced underground by intense persecution, Wess held covert meetings with Church leaders to discuss future plans to bring Compassion’s ministry to their country. On one of those visits Wess was speaking to a pastor and was interrupted. “Look who it is!” the pastor shouted. “You are seeing a dead man,” he explained as a waif Ethiopian walked toward them.

This man, also a pastor, had been arrested two days before for preaching at a funeral - a public display of faith in God.

The prison officials decided to make an example of him. They dragged him from his cell and wrapped his wrists in exposed wires that hung from the ceiling. They preached communism to him, commanded him to renounce Jesus. He refused. So they gave him a moment of silence to contemplate his death and then ceremoniously threw the switch.

The lights went dark. The power in the whole region went out. And the guards threw him back in his cell.

The next day, with the power repaired, they once again dragged him from his cell, wrapped his hands in exposed wires, preached communism to him, commanded him to renounce Jesus, gave him a moment of silence and threw the switch.

The lights went dark. The power went out. And the prison officials, certain they’d scared this pastor into submission and silence, beat him and let him go. He walked toward home - to preach at another funeral - and met Wess and his pastor friend on the way.

Hearing the story of his last 48 hours, Wess wrapped his arms around this brutalized pastor and told him American Christians were praying for Ethiopia. “I am praying for America too,” he said, and walked away.

Wess asked his pastor friend to call the man back; he had a question for him. Wess asked the man, “When you pray for America what do you pray?”

“I pray that God saves America from it’s hardships.”

Wess made a face that must have communicated how confused he was by this answer. What hardships? Wess thought.

The man explained. “Here in Ethiopia we have famine and persecution and injustice but America has bigger troubles. In Ethiopia I must fellowship with my Christian brothers every day or I feel I will die. I must do this. But in America we hear there are churches everywhere and you are free to go there yet many Christians do not go to church everyday and some do not go in a week. Is this possible?”

“It is,” Wess said.

“And in Ethiopia I must pray all day, every day, for food and for life. I must do this. But in America we hear there are some Christians who do not pray every day and some do not pray in a week. Is this possible?”

“It is,” Wess said.

“This is bigger problems. So I pray for America.”

Wess finished this story just as we got out of the car. As we walked into the restaurant he told me I was about to eat with a room full of Christians like this pastor. We entered the large room full of tables and took our seats among the leaders of the Ethiopian churches, pastors and presidents of denominations. Men and women who once preached underground and in prisons. People who still worship together or they fear they’ll die. People who pray constantly for food, the sick, safety. All of them lived through the persecution dished out by the communist regime. And all them live with persecution today from the Orthodox Church and Islam. Their churches are burned. Their brothers are beaten. And still they pray for us and our bigger problems.

I soaked up their stories and felt at once ashamed and proud. Ashamed of the American Church and proud of our Ethiopian family. Ashamed at what I call a bad day, a hard time in life, at what I worry about and fight for and ashamed at how little I depend upon God and people. Proud to work with Compassion International, an organization that partners with - not leads - these wise people to save their children and rescue their nation from poverty.

Wess got up to speak tonight and his words said what I felt better than I could. “I feel like a child in a room full of adults.” I never amen, but I did at that.

After the meal and the speeches I met a woman who is the president of a University in Ethiopia. She’s round faced, gray haired with coal black skin and light brown eyes and full of stories. She told me about how she was imprisoned in 1973, the year I was born, for speaking about God at a university. The communists threw her in jail and told her she would soon die. So she preached. She preached to a murderer, a man who trained children to steal, and other criminals. All of them became Christians that night and she was set free soon after. She knows the names of these men she told about Jesus in jail. She knows where they are today. One teaches at a University and sings in his church’s choir. Another owns a construction company and uses his money to help the poor. On and on she went, telling us what each of these men became.

I told her persecution of course isn’t something I wish on myself or anyone else but I wonder if there are some miracles that can’t happen any other way. She smiled and nodded, and put her hand on my arm. “I do not wish this pain for you but if it comes you know now there is much good in it for God.”

I didn’t say anything else. I just sat and listened to the adults tell their stories.

Week in Review

Last Friday night the girls had a sleep over at Leslie's house. Being of the male persuasion, I did not attend. But I do have a couple pictures Kolby took. The girls watched some movies, played games, and just enjoyed being together. There wasn't much sleeping involved, but I guess that's the point, isn't it?

Chad was out of town this weekend, so we did all the things you can't do while the boss is around! Mr. Rogers visited us at FSM to make some announcements, we watched True Men of Genius, worshiped together, and then talked about the masks we wear. Hopefully, you were all able to look at your masks and take a step toward living honestly without them.

Broomball is this weekend! We will meet Saturday night at 9:30 at Blackman Middle. The cost is $15. After playing we will be going back and spending the night with our small groups. Talk to your small group leader this week if you plan on coming. It is sure be a great time, and you may even get to see me fall flat on my back!

Sunday night we will meet at the church office. We will split up into guys and girls again and talk about some unique issues we face. It should be a great night for everybody!

After Sunday night, we will take a week off as you enjoy Thanksgiving with your family. Safe travels to everyone who will be heading out for the holiday. Zach is excited about eating some turkey... can't you tell?!

FSM Preview

This week we'll be walking through 2 Timothy 3:1-5. This passage has a lot to say about the church in our time. Might be a good idea to read through this on your own before Sunday. There's a lot in this passage that we can't possibly get to in the time we have Sunday night. Go here for some notes on what I've found so far.
I found an awesome resource I've been using for my own Bible study time lately. It's a website called Search God's Word. It has the Bible in its original language underneath the English. It lets you click each word in either language and gives you the word, definition, and pronunciation. It even pronounces the word for you to hear it. It's been awesome to go back and see the things that one translation of the Bible couldn't possibly capture. It also has several commentaries on passages. Check it out for yourself.
Next week, on the 18th, we will meet at the church office for FSM. The church office is at 6360 Franklin Rd. It's on Hwy 96 heading toward Franklin from the YMCA.

As you can see, we had a blast AND the Blue Raiders won! It all made for a great day!

First of all, welcome to the new blog! We have started a lot of new things around here in the last few months. A new website (www.fbcrc.org), new blogs, and a new room... we've been busy! Here are some pictures from the new set up. What does everybody think? We'd love your feedback on what you like and what we can do better.

Check out the new website if you haven't already. There are tons of new pictures up from the Road Trip, SALT, Sunday nights, Mexico, and more!
We have several activities coming up in the next few months. We will be going to the MTSU football game this weekend. See the Events Calendar on the website for more information. November 17th we are playing broomball. December 16th will be the Cowboy Christmas. Sign ups for the Ski Trip January 18th-21st and the Biloxi Spring Break Mission Trip will be this week at FSM. The Mexico Mission Trip informational meeting will be Sunday November 4th after church.
