The sensor sends information to guidance and control electronics that use an algorithm in an eight-bit central processing unit to command electromagnetic actuators. These actuators steer tiny fins that guide the bullet to the target.

From the azcentral.com article “Serving up a special treat: Sonoran hot dogs“

For the uninitiated, Sonoran hot dogs are bacon-wrapped wieners piled high with beans, mayonnaise, cheese, onions, tomatoes — and for the more daring, mushrooms, guacamole, salsa and jalapeño peppers — all stuffed inside a fluffy white Mexican roll called a bolillo.

Bacon-wrapped hot dogs are a fast-food staple in Sonora, Arizona’s neighbor to the south. Known as “hot dogs estilo Sonora,” they are so popular, Sonorenses, as people from that state are called, eat them as often as Mexicans in other states eat tacos.

A true crossover hybrid of American and Mexican border culture, Sonoran hot dogs also have long been popular in Arizona communities closer to the border. In Tucson, scores of restaurants and street vendors sell Sonoran hot dogs. This past summer, a battle between rival vendors became so heated, the FBI got involved. In the end, one Sonoran hot-dog vendor was charged with trying to extort $600,000 from another.

Building a new movie theater so close to the recently built Premiere Cinemas is a mistake according to me. I’m more interested in having the rest of the complex built where I predict there will be an Apple Store.

A great article by John Fleck in The Albuquerque Journal titled “Rain, Rain, Come Again Any Day” in which Carl Axness, a former Sandia Labs scientist, lives completely on rain water in Rio Rancho.

“It’s not that I wanted to be real green, though I like being green,” Axness said one recent morning as the sun beat down on a layer of snow blanketing his neighborhood four miles northeast of Intel’s Sandoval County computer chip plant. Behind him, solar panels tapped into the morning sun’s energy while the steady drips from the metal roof slowly filled the cisterns that surround the spacious home.

The cisterns are Axness’ practical solution to a quintessentially Rio Rancho problem. The lot is located in that sprawling, platted part of the city’s suburban edge that did not have water lines. Axness bought years ago, and expected a water line would be extended past the property by the time he was ready to build on it. When that did not happen, he realized he was faced with a cost of more than $50,000 to install pipe to get city water to his house, so he began exploring the alternatives.

President Barack Obama to Arizona speaking at Intel’s Fab 42, a state of that art chip manufacturing plant under construction in Chandler, AZ on January 25, 2012. from Intel Photos on Flickr

AZCentral.com has three articles about President Obama visit to the Intel site in Chandler on Thursday.

Obama or Intel haven’t made any friends with the construction workers according to the article “Obama’s visit tests readiness at Intel“.

One necessary requirement for hosting the president was shutting down construction for a day on the Fab 42 site, which didn’t sit well with all of the project’s roughly 3,000 active workers.

Some complained that they would not be paid for the unscheduled day off.

Jones said the one-day hiatus would be handled the same as if a thunderstorm had rolled into town Wednesday. A make-up day will be scheduled, and crews will be paid to work that day, instead, Jones said.

Apparently the 6000 people that came to see Obama’s speech had to stand for hours and many got sick doing so according to the article “Thousands wait for hours to see Obama“.

He would not be the only one on whom the day took a toll. Some left in wheelchairs, some walked out on their own, but clearly even a perfect January day can be a bit overwhelming after standing in the sun for hours on end.

There was the expected political nonsense from people who didn’t vote for Obama in the article “Leaders: Obama had no role in Intel project“.

Weninger said he sees the president’s visit as a political move by Obama to take credit for the Intel project. “I respect the president and am happy he is coming to Chandler and highlighting Intel and our great business community,” he posted on his political Facebook page. “I’m just saying it’s not true if he insinuates that his policies led to this expansion. It didn’t. When you couple his press release with the visit a day after the State of the Union, it’s hard to come to a different conclusion.”

From the Yuma Sun, “Dome Valley shooting and house explosion was plan to kill or injure sheriff deputies“

“The motive behind their plan is not known, but it was clear they fully intended to murder as many deputies as possible prior to taking their own lives,” Bratcher said. “These people absolutely had a plan, and I think they wanted to die and make as big of a scene as they could possibly make.”

The Pima County Medical Examiner’s Office, which performed a forensic autopsy on the remains, has positively identified the couple as Jesse Lee Firestone, 65, and his wife Diedre Firestone, 45. The cause of death was listed as suicide from intentional blast and from thermal injuries.

I, Cringely “Prediction 3: Intel buys Qualcomm“:

The dominant theme in this set of predictions for 2012 is the mobile conversion as we abandon our desktops for mobile devices and the Cloud. Intel, while the dominant maker of microprocessors, doesn’t have a strong product position in mobile. Worse still, the company has a leadership vacuum and a culture that has not adapted well to change. Deep pockets aren’t enough when you don’t know where to spend the money and you are running out of time. That’s Intel.

Does buying Qualcomm really solve these supposed problems that Cringely thinks Intel has? Qualcomm bought the naming rights to Jack Murphy Stadium in San Diego, that’s not something Intel would do. Qualcomm isn’t a big of a company as Intel is but it’s still a very big company.

From a Wired Science article titled “Glowing Scorpion Exoskeletons May Be Giant Eyes“:

Scorpion bodies are studded with eyes, sometimes as many as twelve — and scientists may have found one more.

A scorpion’s entire exoskeleton may act as one giant light receptor, a full-body proto-eye that detects shadows cast by moonlight and starlight.

That’s still just a hypothesis, but it would help explain why they glow so brilliantly under ultraviolet light.

Twelve eyes? TWELVE! Little bastards.
