BillyBooms at Crang’s Pond, Toronto

It was a grey weekend in Toronto but that did not stop the lively and colourful artist Bill Wrigley from heading out to the upper reaches of Toronto to “throw” at a semi-secret location known as “Crang’s Pond,” just off the Humber River. Though the old high school football field was covered with toxic geese droppings, we watched and ran as Bill’s beautiful, high performance art boomerangs were thrown into the air… only to return back towards us again! The wind buffeted and shifted about, making their flight path exciting and unpredictable, but there were some really good throws and good catches, mostly by Bill but also by my brother Mike, whom Bill teaches to throw here in this video. Take a look, enjoy, and please don’t laugh (too hard) at my girly attempt at throwing. Yes, I used to play softball, but that was a long time ago. My arms are better used for holding a video camera today.

This image was printed on the back of a postcard announcing the sale of My Rivermede, a “Cottage in the City” located at Weston Road and Sheppard.

My Rivermede is a four-bedroom, three-kitchen and three-bathroom “cottage in the city” for sale in the Weston Road and Sheppard area of Toronto. This unique, beautiful home is on a 70′ x 150′ lot, and features a sun room with legal wood burning stove, two fireplaces, greenhouse, and two-car garage.

In this charming YouTube video, NBC television journalist Tom Brokaw presents a short film explaining Canada to Americans prior to the Opening Ceremonies of the 2010 Winter Olympic Games in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. It’s interesting to note Brokaw’s inclusion (at 03:24 min in the video) of the rescuing of the six American Embassy personnel by Canadian Ambassador Ken Taylor during the Iranian hostage crisis, recently depicted in the Ben Affleck film, Argo.

Incidentally, Argo just happened to win Best Picture at the 85th Academy Awards tonight. Now while Affleck did not exactly give credit to Canadian ambassador Ken Taylor for successfully orchestrating the 1980 hostage rescue (as Taylor recently challenged him to do), Ben Affleck did hurriedly thank Canada (in exactly two words at 06:40 min in the video below) in a very rushed acceptance speech tonight. Perhaps if he had more time on stage he might have said more…

Take a look at this Oscars 2013 video. It opens with a ~~wizened~~ sprightly Jack Nicholson introducing the ‘Best Picture’ category presenter, Michelle Obama, speaking live via telecast from the White House. Argo Co-Producer Grant Heslov provides the initial Oscar thanks before introducing Ben Affleck, who finally approaches the mic at the video’s 06:01 minute mark.

Shane Koyczan’s “To This Day” Honestly Addresses Bullying

Shane Koyczan, the spoken word poet who may be best known for the triumphant performance of his poem “We Are More” at the Opening Ceremony of the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, has this week released a poignant spoken word video poem to raise awareness about bullying. Published three days ago on February 19th, as of today the video has already received 2,488,157 views. The Pirate Bay Away From Keyboard Documentary

This morning I watched The Pirate Bay Away From Keyboard documentary on YouTube, thanks to a post I received in my inbox today linking me to Doktor Spinn‘s news update and link to the film posted on his blog yesterday.

The film by Simon Klose is being shared for free on Youtube and a number of other sites including The Pirate Bay, in keeping with principles of Internet freedom and democracy. For this reason I am sharing the film here too as recommended viewing for anyone interested in safeguarding a free and open Internet.

I think the film is a good overview of the legal battle the peer-to-peer file-sharing site’s founders faced following a 2006 raid and subsequent court-order to shut the site down following allegations of copyright violations. The film also provides some insight into The Pirate Bay’s origins and shows the founders at their best and worst as their case is heard in the courts.

The Pirate Bay Away From Keyboard is a documentary that prompts important questions about the economics of intellectual property in an age where information wants to be free and openly shared on the Internet.

Highly recommended.

FTP Media is currently overseeing and mentoring students in the production of a video series for the Mobile Experience Innovation Centre, a not-for-profit association founded by OCAD University in Toronto with a mission to “support design leadership, experience innovation and applied research in Canada’s mobile and wireless industries.”

The next phase of this workshop focuses on Mobile Design & Development and is scheduled for Thursday, February 14, 2013 at OCAD University. Speakers include Ilona Posner, User & Usability Consultant, Sebastian Villa, Partner/CTO at Social Control, and Mark Kolody & Colin Turnbull, Kolody Inc.

Milton Community Resource Centre: “Our Human Rights”

In the fall of 2012, the Milton Community Resource Centre hired FTP Media to produce a video entitled “Our Human Rights” which was to be presented at their Annual General Meeting and at the Lions Quest Conference 2012. Featuring several pre-school and school-age children declaring their human rights, this short (2.5 min) video is a strong assertion of the MCRC’s values. FTP Media was proud to participate in this project and we enjoyed creating an inspiring and empowering experience for the young children who participated in this project with us.

Unikron – Video Production, Webcasting, Social Media & Archival

Unikron Inc. is located at 495 Adelaide Street West in Toronto.

Working in the role of contract Producer for Unikron Inc., Lisa Santonato produced a series of online videos for corporate clients including Aviva Canada, The Insurance Institute, and Tarion, as well as webcasts for Weber Shandwick and Strongco. The videos were produced for the Canadian market in both English and French. The role of Producer included sales, client relations and account management, as well as overseeing video development, production and post-production. Lisa worked closely with the Unikron team to achieve high results.

Lisa also worked to help establish the company’s new movie & television studio at 495 Adelaide Street West. Lisa wrote press releases announcing the company’s 10th Anniversary and Open House Studio Party and wrote the web content for the new studio site at http://torontostudio.unikron.com/. As an internal consultant, Lisa worked to establish the company’s social media profile, and in so doing launched the company’s Facebook Page and re-established the Unikron Twitter and YouTube accounts. Lisa also initiated the use of Vimeo‘s professional features for video hosting and client review and consulted on the implementation of Unikron’s video archive via Vimeo Portfolios.
