Laura has a degree in kinesiology, while Jennifer specializes in physical therapist and has been an experienced soigneur in the pro peloton for many years now. The two work incessantly to ensure that that the riders and staff have all they need to perform at their best. Without them, no team could function – let alone succeed.

A grin from Joris Boillat.

One bus for the riders, one bus for their bikes.

Australian sprinter Aaron Kemps poses for a photo with his SST. This is his second year with his favorite Fuji model, as he was member of 2011 Fuji-sponsored V Australia.

Matthias looks surprisingly content despite below freezing temperatures in Beijing.

Kung Jiang and his SST 1.0 ready for the day’s ride.

Gorik Gardeyn and Matthias flash a smile for the camera.

And they’re off!

The 85-km ride featured a pretty remarkable backdrop: the Great Wall.

Joris Boillat was kind enough to make General Manager Ed Beamon a “crown” with the “left overs” from the lunch. Ed was more than willing to show it off.

The team poses for a photo outside the restaurant. Gorik Gardeyn, clearly the emerging jokester, pulls Ed Beamon’s hat.

Later that evening, rider Kin San Wu took all the co-sponsors out for dinner at one of the famous night markets on the streets of Beijing. Here, Wu and two Champion System staff members toast their Chinese warm yogurt.

More to come from Hainan!

From an end-of-the-season Grand Tour victory to a first-of-the-year World Tour win, Fuji proved today – perhaps more than ever – that it belongs in the pro peloton.

Staying away for an entire stage, Will Clarke – racing for Uni-SA (University of South Australia national team) before joining his Champion System teammates, triumphantly crossed the Tour Down Under’s Stage 2 finish line Wednesday atop his Fuji SST 3.0 – a bike he received just days before the start of the race from Fuji distributor Oceania Bicycles.

Oceania Owner David Hall couldn’t be more thrilled with the win, not only for what it means for his country but what it means for the Fuji brand.

“We are ecstatic that an Aussie won right here on home turf. Clarke wowed the world today with such a dominant and inspired ride – everyone at Fuji Australia is very proud and feels as if we played a little part in this great victory.”

He added, “What I think is really worth noting is that the frame and fork Clarke raced on are the stock frame from an SST 3.0 – a mid-level bike that is clearly ready to win at the Pro Tour level.”

Clarke broke away from the peloton a kilometer into the 148-km stage from Lobethal to Stirling.

The initial break consisted of Clarke and Martin Kohler of BMC. While Kohler ate up the initial sprint points, Clarke claimed victory on the Category 2 Lenswood climb and then dropped Kohler, pushing ahead solo.

His lead peaked at a remarkable 12 minutes and heading into the final circuit, he retained a more than 10-minute lead.

While it significantly diminished in the final lap, an exhausted Clarke refused to give up. As the finish line came into sight, he was greeted by what many called a “hero’s welcome,” an eruption of cheers for the underdog who left an unsuspecting peloton in the dust.

The 26-year-old’s first-ever victory on the World Tour stage, Clarke called the win simply “unbelieveable” and the “biggest win of his career.” He now leads both the Sprints Classification and the KOM heading into the Tour’s final four stages.

“What a great way to start the season. The first of many wins, I hope,” said Champion System General Manager Ed Beamon.

This is the second time Fuji has won a stage at the Tour Down Under, the first under Manuel Cardoso in Stage 3 of the TDU 2010.
Relive Juan Jose Cobo and his GEOX-TMC teammates’ extraordinary journey to the final podium in Madrid. The ultimate underdogs, Cobo had considered giving up cycling just months before delivering the ride of his life on the famed Angliru’s 22% grade aboard his Fuji Altamira, brilliantly defending the red jersey after his epic Stage 15 win, and ascending the podium as the champion of his native Spain’s grand tour. GEOX-TMC’s season had been defined by the Tour de France snub, but on September 11, 2011, the team and its new leader, Cobo, took their rightful spot on top.

On Saturday, October 29th, 2008 Tour de France Champion Carlos Sastre concluded his 14-year career in cycling in the most fitting way.

Crossing the finish line beaming with his hand raised by proud teammate, 2011 Vuelta a Espana Champion Juan Jose Cobo, Sastre won the Criterium de Oviedo – besting the likes of Samuel Sanchez, Stefano Garzelli, and Ivan Basso in the race’s final elimination contest.

Sastre rode a victory lap aboard his Altamira with his son Yerai on his Fuji Sandblaster, and the two arrived at the finish to a moving bike salute and standing ovation from the Spanish rider’s teammates, competitors, and fans.

“It was a very special day for everything – for the environment I’ve lived in, for the reception of my peers. They said goodbye to me by making me feel appreciated after all this time fighting out on the road,” said Sastre. “The truth is that it was an exciting day that I really enjoyed.”

It was the perfect ending to a career that featured 15 Grand Tour top-ten’s, 3 Tour de France stage wins, 5 top-5 Vuelta a Espana placements, a 2000 Vuelta KOM title, and of course, his ultimate victory: the 2008 Tour de France.

The 36-year-old Spaniard’s 2011 season with GEOX-TMC was significantly quieter than his previous seasons, yet he played an integral role as a mentor for the young squad.

After podiuming in July’s Tour of Austria, Sastre began the Vuelta as a team leader, yet later served as a domestique for the surging Cobo, attacking late in Stage 20, stealing away points from runner-up Christopher Froome, and making his mark on the season’s final grand tour.

“The truth is that I feel happy because it has been a very good time, very important in my life, both personally and sporting. Saying goodbye to the homage of my colleagues, having been on the podium of the Tour of Spain with my own team has been very special to me,” said Sastre.

“It’s time to say goodbye to many years of suffering, defeats, joys, a lot of experiences – all of them memorable,” added Sastre. “The truth is that I am happy I made the decision. I’ve been in professional cycling all these years and have been able to shine and do what I like.”

Universally loved and respected, Sastre’s warm, friendly demeanor and witty sense of humor won him thousands of fans across the globe and just as many within the peloton. The ultimate professional, loved by all who got the chance to meet him or have the honor of riding beside him, Sastre will be missed.

Yet he hopes to continue to be involved in the sport that he loves and vowed, “in one way or another, in the near future, I will be.”

Below, we’ve selected our favorite photos of Carlos from this past season. Carlos, thanks for taking us on a great ride.

As the team continues to work toward securing a spot in the pro peloton next season, GEOX-TMC finished its last race of 2011 in impressive fashion with a Team Classification victory and KOM title at the Tour of Hainan.

Stagiaire Maurizio Gorato earned himself his first professional victory as Hainan’s King of the Mountains, ensuring himself the win after a fantastic performance in the 184.7-km 8th stage – the most challenging mountain stage of the 9-stage Chinese tour.

Daniele Colli finished 3rd in the Points Classification. With his 2nd podium of the Tour coming in the 8th stage and a 6th-place finish in Stage 9, Colli earned a top-ten in all but one stage of the Tour of Hainan.

Xavier Florencio was GEOX-TMC’s highest placed rider in the GC, finishing in the top-ten at 8th. And with such consistent, strong performances from every member of the squad, GEOX-TMC won the overall Team Classification.

As GEOX-TMC, with the support of Fuji, continues to work within the UCI deadlines to pull together the needed contracts, bank guarantee, and budget in order to become a pro tour team in 2012, the team continues to race, dominating the Tour of Hainan.

GEOX-TMC’s Daniele Colli finally made his way onto the podium Wednesday after a top-ten in 4 of Hainan’s 6 stages (5th in Stage 2, 8th in Stage 3, 8th in Stage 4, and 4th in Stage 5), coming across the line 3rd in the culminating group sprint of the 196-km 7th Stage.

“I’m happy for this [3rd] place,” said Colli after the race. “All times, I’ve tried to win, but it’s not easy. But two stages remain,” said the Italian sprinter, who now sits at 4th in the overall Points Classification.

Maurizio Gorato, who finished 16th in Stage 7, remains on top of the Mountains Classification. He reclaimed the polka dot jersey in yesterday’s lengthy 201.8-km Stage 6 from Chengmai to Danzhou, where he finished 13th after an impressive performance on the day’s Category 3-climb.

Slovenian Marko Kump finished 6th in Stage 7 after winning Sprint 2. And Xavier Florencio and Daniele Colli rounded out GEOX-TMC’s 4 men in the top-20.

Xavier Florencio – GEOX-TMC’s highest placed rider in the GC – currently sits at 14th in the General Classification, with Gorato just a second behind at 17th.

Leading by one point heading into Hainan’s toughest mountain stage, tomorrow will likely determine whether GEOX-TMC’s young Italian stagiaire will be able to claim his King of the Mountain title and thereby his first professional victory.
