When Microsoft released Windows Vista they had a lot of great innovations in it despite the constant complaints people had with the OS. One of the best things that came out of Vista is Aero, which is what powers the Flip 3D (Windows Key + Tab), the Taskbar thumbnails, the blurred border around all the windows, the thumbnails used in Alt+Tab, and more. Those things are all great, but I’ve always felt that the thumbnails in the Alt+Tab popup are sometimes too small to even be useful. I mean if you have multiple Windows Explorer windows open it’s hard to distinguish between them using a thumbnail that’s barely bigger than a postage stamp.

A skilled developer put together a super simple application called Alt+Tab Tuner for changing the size of the thumbnails in Windows 7. Most of the changes seem to take affect immediately after you hit the Apply button, except for the “Thumbs Grid” settings. For this you need to restart Explorer, which can easily be done by checking the “Autorestart Explorer” box in the bottom-left corner. The next time you hit the Apply button it will automatically restart the Explorer process for you.

To add a little perspective to some of the changes here are some before/after screenshots of a few changes I made:

Not bad, huh? It’s a free and portable app that does exactly what it is designed to do. It’s hard not to love apps like that.

There are all kinds of ways you can accomplish this, and there are even some web services that will do it for you. The downside to the web services is that they normally have a size limit as to how large the video can be, and so you may be better off with a desktop app like Pazera Free Audio Extractor. It’s simple to use, can handle a wide array of video formats, and is pretty fast at the conversion. Here’s a list of supported input and output formats:

Supported Video Formats (Input): AVI, FLV, MP4, MPG, MOV, RM, 3GP, WMV, VOB and more
Supported Audio Formats (Output): MP3, AAC, AC3, WMA, FLAC, OGG and WAV

What Is The Bitrate? What You Should Know About It.

With the term “bitrate” we face at the mention of audio and video formats. To understand this term, you must master the process of compressing and encoding files. German scientists have laid the general principle of file compression with minimal loss. On the example of coding the original MP3 sound file is cut into fragments, the duration of 50 milliseconds, each of which is analyzed separately. In the analysis of the fragment is decomposed into harmonics of the Fourier method, of which, in accordance with the theory of sound perception by the human ear thrown those harmonics that people perceive worse than the rest. These are quieter harmonics on the back of the higher ones. As a result, emitted sounds are masked due to the inertia of hearing. The information about the harmonics left after filtering and recorded in the MP3 file, which results in a much smaller than the original WAV.

WAV-file contains detailed information about the original sound, digitized and quantized with a frequency of 44kHz. This information is stored on ordinary audio-CD. When playing there is the inverse transformation, in which the remaining harmonic is re-converted into sound waves. Some of the information about the original signal was lost, because the sound is not identical to the original. But throwing irrelevant sounds, so the human ear cannot distinguish the signal from the original order, which was packed to MP3.

Bitrate is the amount of information per unit time. Its essence – how much information about every second of recording we can spend. Naturally, as it is smaller, the smaller the size of the files have the same length of time, thus will have to throw more “extra” harmonics. Bitrates are units of measurement – kilobits per second (Kbps) and megabits per second (Mbps). MP3 audio compression algorithm is often used with 128 kbps compression. They are of two types: fixed and variable. For example, when a video compression is used with a constant bitrate a fixed amount of data is used to encode a second film. In the case of variable bitrate the codec installs eigenvalue bitrate depending on the scenes of the movie. For example, when encoding to mpeg the gain in compression is mostly obtained by retaining only the difference between adjacent frames. During a slow scene change the difference between frames is small and thus can reduce the amount of a bit rate required for playback of these scenes. However, with the abrupt change of scenes in the film, the differences in staffing increase dramatically in size and require more bitrate to play such scenes. In contrast to the constant bit rate, at a variable one cannot predict the size of the output file, it depends on the ratio of “fast” and “slow” scenes in the film.

Kill Unresponsive Apps: Super F4 Hotkey

It’s always annoying when a program becomes unresponsive where you have to pull up the Task Manager to kill it, but it can be even worse when some of the fullscreen games start to freeze. That’s how one developer felt, and so they decided to do something about it.

SuperF4 creates a keyboard shortcut (Ctrl+Alt+F4) that will forcefully close any foreground program, including fullscreen games. Why is this so annoying with games? Well some games prevent you from using shortcuts (chiefly Ctrl+Alt+Delete) when in fullscreen mode. That can be extremely painful since the only action you may be able to take is to shutdown your computer by holding the power button, which is generally a last resort for most of us.

The app also has a secondary mode that is accessed by pressing Win+F4 keys. Your mouse cursor will become a skull, and all you have to do is select the window/program on the screen that you’d like to kill. It sure beats digging through the Task Manager!

You know when someone tells you their computer takes 20-minutes to boot up, and you roll your eyes because you know they are just exaggerating. Well, there is a way to find out. All you have to do is install BootRacer on their machine, and then restart it. The application will keep an eye on certain events such as how long it took the user to login and how long it took for their desktop to finish loading, and it will report back.
One of the cool things is that BootRacer actually displays a window in the lower-right corner of the screen after you’ve logged in showing how long it has taken to startup thus far. It will continue incrementing the timer until all the startup apps have finished loading, and will alert you once it has completed.
Here’s a rundown on some of the features pointed out by the developer:

Automatically calculates your Windows boot time.
BootRacer uses minimum of computer resources.
Runs under the non-administrator accounts.
BootRacer logs all the results to the history report and to standard event log. You can check events using Windows Event Viewer.

The history report feature may not seem all that useful, but with it you may be able to pinpoint when some sort of change was made to the machine that significantly slowed it down. You might even be able to salvage some time by simply rolling the computer back to a restore point before the slow-down occurred.
BootRacer is free for non-commercial use, and can be helpful when fixing someone’s computer. If you run it before and after the optimizations you’ll actually be able to give them real-world numbers as to how much faster their computer is thanks to your magical tweaks.

How-To Install in 5 simple steps:
1) Download the .ZIP file attached to this post
2) Unzip the file
3) Open 'Windows 7 Start Button Changer.exe'
4) Click the start button icon next to 'Select & Change Start Button', and then select my LP orb image
5) Wait for it to show up and enjoy

Troubleshooting
- In the rare eventuality that you lose your explorer.exe, then from your desktop, press CTRL-SHIFT-ESC to bring up the Task Manager. Click File tab > New Task > Type cmd > Click Run. In the command prompt which opens, type sfc /scannow and hit enter. Restart when asked to.

- IF in x64 version, you receive an ‘unhandled exception‘ error, please click on Continue or try running it again ‘As an Admin‘.

- IF the Start Button does not get changed, you may have to follow these steps:
a) Make sure that the program is closed.
b) Manually take ownership of “C:\Windows\explorer.exe”
c) Run the program and select the orb. It should now work.

Did you know that by default windows 7 and vista don't use all your Cores. What I mean is they don't use the dual core system that you payed $700 for or the 2G you put into a quad core and most of the time your only using one. Well here is a tutorial to change that!

First you need to click the start menu button

Now type in msconfig in the Search Program and Files Search bar, and press Enter, or click on the msconfig button.

Now an msconfig dialog box will pop up and then click on the boot Tab
and you will see this.

Now Left click the Advanced options... button and you will see something like this:

Check the box next to Number of processors: then Left click the arrow thats on the right of the 1 and select either 2 or 4 cores. depends on what you have for a system I have quad so I am going to go all the way to 4. Like this:

History and Significance of Raksha Bandhan

Raksha Bandhan is a term from the Hindi language which means a relationship or an association based on protection. This is a festival which has a long standing Indian heritage. More commonly known as Rakhi, this Indian festival signifies the sacred bond of love between a brother and sister.

The Changing Face of Raksha Bandhan
Rakhi, though considered by some as having a religious origin. But, there have been many occasions in history that have emphasized the relationship between a brother and a sister more than the religious side of it. Gradually, over the centuries and over time Rakhi has lost its original outlook that made everyone associate it with the Hindu religion.

Origin of Raksha Bandhan
As with other Indian festivals, Rakhi also follows the festival calender that is completely based on the weather changes and their significance in the lives of people. Rakhi has a rich Indian mythological base. Many historically significant epics are related to the origin and the subsequent development of Raksha Bandhan. The festival also finds a mention in most of the epics and its origin can be traced to as far back as the Pouranik times.

Legendary Stories of Raksha Bandhan

Alexander The Great and King Puru
Alexander, the great (as he was called) was on a mission to conquer the world. On his crusade through the Indian subcontinent somewhere around 300 B.C., King Alexander of Macedonia was shaken by the fury of the Indian king, Puru. It was then that Alexander's wife, approached King Puru as a sister. On Alexander's next attempt, King Puru, as a tribute to the sacred bond of Rakhi, did not oppose King Alexander and let him have his way.
Rani Karnawati and Emperor Humayun
One of the most popular tales that come to our minds when we think of Rakhi is that of Rani Karnawati and Emperor Humayun. This dates back to the medieval era when Rajputs were fighting Muslim invasions. When Rani Karnawati, the widowed queen of the king of Chittor realised that she could not defend the invasion by the Sultan of Gujarat, Bahadur Shah, she sent a Rakhi to Emperor Humayun. The Emperor, touched by this gesture of sisterly love immediately set off with his troops to defend Chittor's honour.
Lord Krishna and Draupadi
Legend goes that during the war that Krishna fought and won against the evil King sari wherein he killed sari, Krishna was hurt and and his hand was bleeding. Seeing this, Draupadi tore a strip of cloth from her sari and tied it around his wrist. Lord Krishna, seeing her affections and realising her concerns about him, declared himself bounded by her sisterly love. He also promised that he will be at her side whenever she needed a brother. Many years later, when Pandavas lost Draupadi in a game of dice and Kauravas were removing her sari, Krishna helped her. He did so by continuously adding to the length of her sari and thereby saved her from a public disgrace.
King Bali and Goddess Lakshmi
Mahabali, the demon king was also a great devotee of Lord Vishnu. It was thus that Lord Vishnu, left Vaikuntham, his dwelling to protect Bali's kingdom. But, Goddess Lakshmi (Lord Vishnu's wife) became sad because of the Lord having left her alone. So, she went to Bali as a Brahmin woman and took refuge as in the King's palace. On Shravana Purnima, she tied a Rakhi on King Bali's wrist. She then revealed her true identity and told the King of her real reason for coming. The king was touched by Her and Lord Vishnu's good will and affection towards him and his family. Following which Bali requested Lord Vishnu to accompany her to Vaikuntham. It was thus that the festival of Rakhi also came to be known as Baleva (as a reference to Bali's devotion to Lord Vishnu).

Removing Boot.vbs Virus from Computer

1) Go to Task Manager –> Processes and End the following processes in order:

1. dxdlg.exe
2. wscript.exe

2) Go to Start –> Run –> regedit –> Open the following key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon

3) In the right hand pane, select Userinit and delete everything except “C:\windows\system32\userinit.exe”

4) Make sure the processes wscript.exe and dxdlg.exe are not running.

5) Delete the following files

1. C:\Windows\System32\dxdlg.exe
2. C:\Windows\System32\boot.vbs
3. In your Windows drive, search for boot.vbs and delete all of them.
4. In your Windows drive, search for kinza.exe and delete all of them.

6) Disable System Restore and then Enable it again.

7) Restart your computer.

So by now i guess the virus (boot.vbs) is cleared from your PC.

Complete Guide to Install fresh Windows XP

Now this is obvious but easily overlooked, make sure you can boot from your CD/DVD Drive. In order to do this you will have to enter BIOS software and change the Boot order. Check the manual that came with the PC or motherboard for information about entering the BIOS. From previous experience it usually tells you as the computer is starting up and says something like press (Delete or F9, they are the favourite although it could be anything!!) to enter Set Up. There are many different types of BIOS this is Phoenix.

You want the order to be CD/DVD, Floppy, and Master HDD. Once in Set Up (BIOS) follow the onscreen instructions and change the Boot order.

Once the boot order has been changed don't forget to save and exit.

*You can test to see whether you need to do all that by simply inserting the Windows XP disc and rebooting. If set up begins or you see a message about hitting any key to Boot from CD you are ready to go...cancel the Boot i.e don't press any key..*

Install windows
1. Press any key to boot from CD
Insert the WIndows XP CD-ROM and reboot your computer. You will see a screen telling you to press any key to boot from CD...do.

You will see a message about inspecting your system.

2. Windows Setup
This is the MS-DOS part of Setup. In this first stage you will see a series of blue and grey MS-DOS based screens. In the grey bit at the bottom you will be asked if you need to install any third-party of RAID drivers..(Thats a totally different tutorial!!) So don't press F6!!
Still in the grey bar at the bottom you will be told you can start an Automated System Recovery by pressing F2...don't press that either...

3. Windows XP Professional Setup
Setup begins. In this step you can setup XP, launch the Recovery Console or quit.
Press ENTER to continue Setup and it will examine your hard drives and removable disks. NOTE: This could say Windows XP Home depending on your version!! Duh!!

4. Windows XP Licensing Agreement
You will have to agree to Microsoft's complex licensing agreements. Among other things it tells you that: You don't actually own Windows XP and you can only install it on one PC.
I know no one reads this but you should...it's interesting!!
Press F8 to continue.

5. Installation Partition
This is a clean install so we will install onto the C: Drive. (I don't want to go into dual booting at the moment..that once again is a different tutorial) I would suggest if there are any partitons here you delete them and just setup on the one. It keeps it neater.

6. File System
In your new partition you can change the file system. The one you want is the NTFS system. Its more secure and faster than the older FAT system.
There is debate about whether to choose the quick or normal format options, suffice to say they do the same thing and the normal is very slow where as the quick is very fast!! So for this installation we will choose quick.
So Format the partition using NTFS file system (quick)

7. Format the Partition
Setup will now format the drive. You will be asked if you want to change anything and to verify the partition.
Press F to continue.

A yellow progress bar will indicate the status of the format. When this is complete, Setup will examine your disk and create a list of files to copy.

8. Setup Folder copy and reboot
Setup will now copy system files to the system/boot partition you just created. This will allow the PC to boot from the C: drive and continue Setup in GUI mode!!!.
When the file copy is complete Windows will tell you it is restarting and a red bar will appear, just let it go through the motions.

On restart you will see the Press any key to boot from CD screen, do NOT press any key.

Setup will now boot from your C: drive.
If for any reason you can't stop it from booting from the CD, eject it and reboot your system. Windows will ask for the CD when it is required.

9. GUI Setup begins
You will now be presented with the GUI Setup phase, it's typical XP and a lot smarter than the DOS mode. As you progress through this phase you can read all the promotional material from Microsoft about XP to get into the XP zone while Setup detects your hardware devices!! This can take quite a while....

10. Regional and Language Options
You can now choose to customize the regional and language settings. NOTE: Make sure you change the keyboard input settings, you could set the Language to English 9UK but the keyboard could be English (US).
Click Next to continue...

11. Enter your Name and Company
This name is not the same as your user name. It will be used to personalise your software. So you should use your real name and optionally your company!!
Click Next to continue...

12. Enter your Product Key
Time to enter the 25-character product key that is located on the orange sticker on the back of the Windows XP case. You cannot install XP without a valid product key. NOTE: You can only use this to install on one computer and if this is not totally valid you will not be able to activate XP later on!!*cough*

13. Enter a Computer Name and Administrator Password
Next phase we need to create a name for your computer which is used to identify it on a Network and with the Professional Edition you can create a password for the Administrator (You!!) You can call it what you want or leave it with the generated one.
In XP Professional the Administratr Password is optional, you can leave it blank. XP Home doesn't allow you to enter an Administrator Password as this account is more hidden on XP Home for some reason. Click Next to continue...

14. Date and Time Settings
Now we supply the Date and Time (which are auto set using your system BIOS) and the time zone which is set to PST because thats where Microsoft are based...great fact!!

15. Network Setup
If you have a network card or modem, setup now installs the networking components, which include the the client for Microsoft networks, File and Print sharing, the QoS Packet Scheduler and the TCP/IP networking protocol by default.

16. Choose Network Settings
You can choose to keep the default settings or you can....leave it on the default settings!!! Unless you have specific needs dictated by your network, is so consult them...and adjust accordingly.

With Windows XP Professional you can enter your Workgroup or Domain information. The Home Edition doesn't work with Windows Domains and setup automatically supplies the workgroup name MSHOME, which you can change later. The default name in XP Pro is WORKGROUP!!!!

17. Setup Completion
From this point on, Setup will continue to completion without any more interaction from you and will take about 20-30 mins. So do what you do........

Setup is copying files, completing installation, installing your Start menu items, registering system components, saving settings, removing any temporsry files needed by Setup and will then reboot.

Once again on reboot you will see the Press any key to boot from CD screen, do NOT press any key.!!

Your new XP install will boot up!!!!!
Yippeeeeeeee!!!!!!!!!

18. First Boot
You will be greated by the XP splash screen on first boot.
The splash screens for XP Pro and Home are subtly different!!!

19. Change Display Settings
If you have a CRT monitor (and some LCD's such as Laptops and Flat Panel Displays) you will see a Display Setting dialog which askd whether you'd like XP to automatically set the screen resolution. This wil change the resolution from 800x600 to 1024x768.

Click OK and allow XP to change it. Then accept the settings if you can read the display...If you can't don't do anything and it will revert back in 30 seconds.

20. Welcome to Microsoft Windows
This is XP's Out Of Box Experience or OOBE. A Wizard that will guide us through the final stages of Setup.
Click Next to continue...

21. Network Setup
You are asked to set up your network/internet connection, which is required for activation and registration *cough* If you selected the default networking configuration during Setup and know it will work you can select Yes otherwise you can select No and skip it... Lets select Yes.
Click Next to continue...

22. Activate and Register Windows
If you selected Yes in the Network Setup you are asked to activate Windows XP. *cough* Activation require a connection to the internet but you can skip this and activate later so don't worry. XP will remind you for 60 days until you do!! If you don't then Windows locks.
Registration is optional and is just giving your information to Microsoft.
Click Net to continue...

23. Set Up Users
Nearly there...this is setting up the user names/accounts of people who are going to be using the PC. You need at least one (Yours!!)
Click Finish and your ready to Start.....

24. Logon to Windows XP for the First Time
You are presented with the Welcome Screen for the first time.

This will list all the users you created. When you click on a user name that account will logon and you will be presented with the XP Desktop..

And thats all, so easy rite? Enjoy.....

We all use filehosts like Rapidshare ,hotfile, Megaupload e.t.c these days. Most of the data hosted on these file hosts are in various parts. Sometimes, due to illegal activity of the hosted files or due to no download for a long time, these files get automatically deleted from the servers. Thus, it becomes very annoying when you have downloaded most of the files and come to find that one of the file links is either dead or blocked by host due to possible illegal contents in the file(s). That is when link(ONLY FOR MOZZILA FIREFOX BROWSER) on how to automatically let Firefox check the integrity of links of various file hosts while you visit the page with download links....

The links with red cross mark is dead...and links with green is live links

Follow below procedure to install addons:

step-1 : Download Greasemonkey add-on and install it in your Firefox.

step-2 : Download and install te below files using greasemonkey

1.Rapidshare Links Checker(checks only rapidshare links)

2.Universal Link Checker (Rapidshare, Megaupload,Filefactory, etc)

3.The Cavern Links Checker (checks 25 host links)

4. AIO Links Checker (checks rapidshare link...chks faster than other addons)

The application has reached Beta Release phase as of 0.6.
