Chicopee Tigers 3 - Holyoke Pirates 0 WP: Andre Conde, LP: Manny DiazSP: Conde (Tigers), Diaz (Pirates) HR: Brothers (C), Hebert (C) Palmer - The Chicopee Tigers used a brief power surge to overcome the Holyoke Pirates 3 - 0 in a pitchers' duel in game 1 of the league championship series Thursday at St. Joe's Field. Chicopee's Andre Conde faced just one batter over the minimum in a complete game 3-hit shutout, striking out 8 while walking none. Holyoke's Manny Diaz was almost equal to the task, allowing 5 hits and 1 walk, fanning three. Holyoke's Alex Baez reached on an error to open the game, but was later out on an inning ending 5-4-3 double play. Chicopee's Brad Brothers singled with one away in the bottom of the first, but he also perished in a 4-6-3 double play. Josh Almodovar singled to start the top of the second, and was erased on a force out before a 1-6-3 double play ended that frame. Tiger Chris Hebert's line drive leading off the bottom of the second found third baseman Javier DeJesus glove, and Diaz went on to set down the side in order. In the top of the third, Raynaldo Reyes dropped a hit in right field, but with one down was caught too far off the bag and put out in a rundown. Chicopee centerfielder John Boozang robbed Carlos Rivera of a hit with a great diving catch on a liner to short right center for the third out. Chicopee seemed to gain some momentum in the bottom of the third, as Paul Winiarski led off with an infield hit, and Jeff Couture followed with a walk. Diaz fielded a sacrifice attempt and nailed the runner at second, and with runners on the corners got another double play to end the threat. Conde got into a groove, and was perfect in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings. Leading off the Tiger fourth, Brothers connected and drove the ball over the fence deep in right for the first run of the night. Karl Oliveira doubled to right center, and Hebert homered over the high fence in left to put Chicopee up 3 - 0. A pair of infield errors put 2 runners in scoring position before DeJesus held the runners on a grounder to third, then chased down the lead man on another short grounder. A fly out ended the inning. Diaz recovered to get the Tigers in order in the fifth and sixth, but Conde was still on a roll, setting down 13 in a row before a Kenny Rodriguez base hit with two outs in the seventh. A ground out ended the game in favor of the defending champs. The teams meet in game 2 of the series Saturday night at 7:30.

Chicopee Tigers 6 - Springfield Indians 2 WP: Steve Lagasse, LP: Evan DonermeyerSP: Ev. Donermeyer (Indians), Lagasse (Tigers) East Longmeadow - The Chicopee Tigers punched their ticket to the Finals with a big third inning, defeating the Springfield Indians 6 - 2 to sweep their Semifinal series 2 games to none. Steve Lagasse was strong on the hill through five innings for the Tigers, allowing 1 earned run on 3 hits, 3 walks and a hit batter, striking out 4. Scott Leecock closed it out with 2 scoreless innings for Chicopee, with 2 hits and 3 strikeouts. Indian starter Evan Donermeyer was unable to recover from a pair of errors in the third, struggled with his control and gave up 6 runs, all but 1 unearned. Reliever Luis Silva came on to toss 4 shutout innings, permitting just 1 hit, 2 walks and a hit batter in his stint. Chicopee opened the game with a Ben Benton walk, and Brad Brothers was hit by a pitch. Benton tagged and took third on a fly to right, and scored on a wild pitch. In the Indian first, John Jebb led off with a single, and advanced on a fielder's choice before Eric Donermeyer's hit put runners on the corners. Evan Donermeyer was hit by a pitch to load the bases, and Doug Feeley lofted a sacrifice fly to left to plate Jebb. A Mark Lekarczyk walk reloaded the bases, but Lagasse fielded a grounder to get out of the jam. After a one-out error and a Leecock hit put two on in the Chicopee second, Donermeyer got a strikeout and pop up to get out of trouble. Lagasse had a 1-2-3 second, then the Tigers took control in the third. With one down, Chris Hebert hit a hard one-hopper that was misplayed, then Paul Winiarski reached on an error. Both runners advanced on a passed ball, and Jeff Couture knocked a 2-run double down the line. After walks to John Boozang and Henry loaded the bases, Couture scored on a wild pitch. Leecock walked to reload the bags, and Boozang scored on Benton's RBI ground out. Henry scored on a wild pitch to make it 6 - 1 before a ground ball ended the inning. The Indians fought back in the bottom of the third, with Mike Lekarczyk reaching second on a throwing error, but he was lost for the game to a pulled a hamstring trying to avoid a collision with the leaping first baseman. With one out, Evan Donermeyer and Feeley walked to load the bases, and Mark Lekarczyk's fielder's choice knocked in pinch runner JD Downs. Again Lagasse induced a ground ball to escape further damage. Luis Silva relived for Springfield in the fourth, and worked out of his own trouble after two were out, sandwiching a pair of walks around a hit batter, getting a fly out to end it. He followed with a 1-2-3 fifth. The Indians were unable to capitalize on a 2-out Jebb single in the fourth, or a one out runner courtesy of an error in the fifth. Hebert singled in the Tiger sixth and stole second, but was stranded there. With Leecock on in relief for Chicopee, Clayton Beaulieu had a 2-out hit in the sixth. Silva again set the side down in order in the seventh. Down to their last out, pinch hitter Ryan Stork singled for Springfield before Leecock got a fly ball to end the game and series. The top seeded Tigers advance to the Best-of-5 Championship Series vs. the 4th seeded Holyoke Pirates, who are also playing well, both teams with a 4 - 0 record in the playoffs. Chicopee will be looking to earn their fifth consecutive league title. With all games slated for St. Joe's Field in Palmer, the series is set to play out with Game 1 under the lights Thursday at 7:30, followed by Games 2 and 3 on Saturday and Sunday at 11:00 AM. Games 4 and 5, if necessary, will be Monday and Wednesday, respectively, at 5:45.

Chicopee Tigers 5 - Springfield Indians 4WP: Andr CondeLP: Toby RutkowskiSP: Conde (Tigers), Rutkowski (Indians) The top seeded Chicopee Tigers earned a walk off 5 - 4 victory with a Chris Hebert base hit in the first game of their Semifinal series with the Springfield Indians at St. Joe's Field in Palmer. The Tigers dug into their deep bench in the bottom of the seventh inning to rally from a 2 run deficit. Andr Conde put in a complete game effort on the mound for Chicopee, allowing 3 earned runs, striking out 7 and scattering 9 hits and 3 walks to keep his mates within striking distance. Toby Rutkowski toed the rubber for Springfield, also going the distance and holding the Tiger offense to 3 earned runs on 6 hits, walking 4 and fanning 3. Springfield got a first inning lead when Mike Lekarczyk had a two-out hit, stole second and scored on Eric Donermeyer's double to deep right. Chicopee tied it in the bottom half with a Brad Brothers walk, a Ben Benton single to put runners at the corners, and after Rutkowski came off the mound to make a great catch an Tim Sigda's flare to the right side, Hebert reached on a ground ball error that brought home Brothers. Indian third baseman John Jebb cut down Benton at the plate on a two-hopper. Rutkowski led the Indian second with a base hit, and scored on Mark Lekarczyk's triple to center; JD Downs one-out infield roller scored him from there to put the visitors up 3 - 1. Benton tripled to center with one away in the bottom of the third, but he was stranded there. With one out in the top of the fourth, Mark Lekarczyk singled, and Downs had a two-out hit, but Conde got a grounder to end the inning. In the Tiger fourth, Paul Winiarski's one-out single to left was followed by a Jeff Couture base on balls. Couture was forced at second on Jared Lamontagne's grounder, but the double play attempt got away and Winiarski scored to close the deficit to 3 - 2. Springfield regained the 2 run margin in the fifth when Mike Lekarczyk singled, stole second and with 2 out scored when a ground ball throw pulled the first baseman off the bag. While the Indians threatened in the sixth, getting a Downs walk and a Jebb hit, Conde again worked out of the jam. Rutkowski meanwhile allowed just a walk in the fifth and sixth innings. In the bottom of the seventh, pinch hitter Rich Bowers led off with a double to left-center, and pinch hitter Ralph Edwards' single up the middle scored him. Still down a run, Scott Leecock pinch ran at first. Brothers was hit by a pitch, and the throw on Benton's sacrifice bunt went into right field, scoring Leecock with the tying run. With first open and none out, Tim Sigda was intentionally walked as the Indians took a chance facing the cleanup hitter. Hebert drove a 1-2 pitch into right-center to plate Brothers with the winning run. The teams face off in game two of the best-of-3 series on Monday evening at East Longmeadow High School.

Springfield Indians 12 - Easthampton BullDawgs 6 WP: Luis Silva, LP: Chris WeathersbySP: Weathersby (BullDawgs), Silva (Indians) Granby - The Springfield Indians went on the warpath Friday, charging back from an early deficit to defeat the Easthampton BullDawgs 12-6 on another hot day at Granby High School, advancing to the Semifinals. Indian starter Luis Silva went the full six innings (the game was called due to fading sunlight), settling down after a rough first inning to strike out 5 while allowing 7 hits and 5 earned runs. BullDawg starter Chris Weathersby pitched well and gave up just two runs until tiring in the fifth. Reliever Kyle Pardee surrendered 3 unearned runs in the sixth. Kyle Lewis opened the home half of the first with a single, and stole second. Shane Mitchell drove him in with a one-out triple to left-center. Todd Vishaway followed with an RBI single that just eluded 3 fielders in short right. Andy Menard walked, and Brian Hayes pop fell in short center, but Vishaway was forced at third. The runners advanced on an errant pickoff attempt from the plate, and Menard scored on a passed ball. Ken Vautrin singled to score Hayes with the fourth BullDawg run. Springfield inched back with single runs in the next two innings. Doug Feeley drove the first pitch of the second inning to left-center for a two-bagger, advanced on a ground out and scored on a wild pitch. Leading off the third, John Jebb doubled down the line in left, but was caught off second on Dan Viets' one-hopper to the mound. Jebb remained in the rundown long enough for Viets to reach second; from there he stole third and scored when the throw got away. Easthampton regained its 4 run lead in the third with leadoff walks by Vishaway and Menard, a sacrifice bunt and a 2-run hit from Vautrin. Indian centerfielder Viets then took Pardee's fly ball and made a strong throw to double the runner off first and end the inning. BullDawg Carl Danoff reached on an error to open the fourth, but was forced at second when Lewis' fly to left was short hopped by left fielder Mark Lekarczyk. Lewis stole second, but with two down he was gunned down trying to grab third by Indian catcher Feeley. The Indians' big fifth inning began with a Jebb walk, and a Viets single. Silva walked to load the bases, and all runners moved up on a wild pitch, with Jebb scoring. Eric Donermeyer had to stop at second on a ground rule double into the woods in right field that brought home Viets and Silva, then Feeley singled home Donermeyer to tie the contest at 6-6. Lekarczyk drove the ball through the left-center gap and legged out a two-run homer to give Springfield its first lead of the game. With one out, Colin Campbell walked, and Jebb was hit by a pitch with two away. Viets second hit of the inning scored Campbell, but BullDawg catcher Vautrin nailed Jebb trying to move up to third, ending the inning with the Indians up 9-6. Following the venue's traditional sunset timeout, Easthampton threatened in the bottom half when Mitchell reached on an error and Menard was hit by a pitch with one down. Silva then induced two pop ups to escape unscathed. With Pardee on in relief for the BullDawgs and one away in the sixth, Donermeyer reached on an error, and Lekarczyk was hit by a pitch with two outs. JD Downs blooped a double down the right field line to score both runners, moved up on a wild pitch, and scored on an infield error to extend the lead to 12-6. With two outs in the bottom of the sixth the BullDawgs' Lewis reached on his third hit of the day, stole second and took third on Defensive Indifference on ball four to Weathersby, but Silva got a strikeout to end the frame. The umpires conferred, determined it was no longer light enough to continue, and the game was declared final. Springfield looks forward to facing off with the #1 seed Chicopee Tigers in the Best-of-3 Semifinals at 11:00 am on Sunday at St. Joe's Field in Palmer, followed by a Monday meeting at East Longmeadow High School.

Springfield Indians 5 - Easthampton BullDawgs 4WP: Ryan Burnette, LP: Matt Kirk, SV: Toby RutkowskiSP: Burnette (Indians), Kirk (BullDawgs) East Longmeadow - The Springfield Indians battled back to tie their first round best of 3 playoff series with the Easthampton BullDawgs at 1 game each Thursday at East Longmeadow High School. The Indians went out to an early lead, rebounded after the BullDawgs tied it up, then held on as the visitors fought to come back late. Ryan Burnette earned the win with 6+ strong innings on a hot and steamy summer evening, allowing just one earned run while fanning 5. Toby Rutkowski came on to pick up the Save in the seventh, striking out both men he faced to end it. Matt Kirk went 5 innings for Easthampton, surrendering two earned runs in his outing. Springfield's John Jebb opened the bottom of the first with a double down the line in left, and moved to third on a passed ball. Dan Viets walked, and the Indians pulled a double steal to score Jebb. Eric Donermeyer's single drove Viets in from third after another steal. In the second, Mark Lekarczyk and JD Downs singled, with Downs advancing to second on the throw. Jebb's fly to center wasn't deep enough for Lekarczyk to tag and score, but the throw to the plate bounced away and he trotted home. Easthampton got on the board in the third with a two-out rally. Kyle Lewis singled sharply just off the end of shortstop Colin Campbell's glove as he dove toward the hole. Lewis stole second, and went to third on a passed ball. Chris Weathersby walked and stole second, and Shane Mitchell took four wide to load the bases. Lewis induced a balk attempting to steal home to score the first BullDawg run, and following a dropped foul pop up, Andy Menard singled home Weathersby and Mitchell to tie the game at 3-3. A Brian Hayes hit put runners at the corners, but Burnette avoided further damage by getting a groundout. The Indians regained the lead in the bottom half when Evan Donermeyer singled with one away, then Rutkowski reached on a force out, diving into first to stay out of the double play and extend the inning. Colin Campbell worked a walk, and Lekarczyk hit a bloop down the line in right that was dropped after a long run for a tough error. Rutkowski scored and the Indians had two men in scoring position. Downs hit a tweener that both the first and second basemen went for, but the second sacker had no play as Downs beat all fielders to the bag and Campbell scored. The Indians loaded the bases on a Jebb walk before a foul pop up ended the inning. Easthampton threatened in the fifth with leadoff hits by Mitchell and Menard, but Indian catcher Doug Feeley caught Mitchell wandering too far off the bag with a strike to Campbell. Two ground outs ended the frame. Springfield loaded the bases in the fifth on hits by Downs and Jebb and an error, but Kirk escaped with a pop up double play. The BullDawgs loaded the bases in the sixth on a pair of two-out walks and a hit batter, but a groundout got Burnette out of the jam. Weathersby came on to pitch a 1-2-3 sixth for Easthampton, fanning the last two. Menard opened the BullDawg seventh with a walk as Burnette tired a bit. Dan Viets relieved for the Indians, getting a fly out before walking Jay Kirk. When Kyle Pardee's fly ball was missed, Menard scored to close within 5-4 with two in scoring position. Rutkowski came on to strike out the next two Easthampton batters and even the series.

Easthampton BullDawgs 5 - Springfield Indians 4WP: Brian HayesLP: Toby RutkowskiSP: Hayes (BullDawgs), Rutkowski (Indians) Granby - The Easthampton BullDawgs opened the playoffs with a thrilling come from behind victory over the Springfield Indians at Granby High School on Thursday. Brian Hayes worked around one tough inning, allowing 2 earned runs on 4 hits, walking 5 with 2 hit batters and 7 strikeouts. Toby Rutkowski scattered 5 hits and 2 walks in allowing 3 earned runs. Easthampton scored in the first inning when Kyle Lewis singled to right, stole second and went to third on a ground ball error. He scored on a Todd Vishaway sacrifice fly for the second out. Steve Marcil drove a double to deep right center to open the home half of the second, moving to third on a one-out ground ball error. With runners on second and third, Lewis smashed a line drive to John Jebb at third that left Marcil with no chance to get back before being doubled off third. Springfield put together a rally in the third as Jebb reached on a bobbled grounder, Dan Viets walked, and Mike Lekarczyk knocked an RBI hit to put runners at the corners. With one away, Evan Donermeyer drove a two-run triple to deep left center. Mark Lekarczyk walked and stole second, with Donermeyer scoring when the throw went wild. The BullDawgs closed to within 4-2 when the Indians' defense wavered in the fourth, as Andy Menard reached and came around to score on three consecutive errors. With two on, Rutkowski nailed the lead runner at third on a sacrifice attempt, then induced a popup and topper back to the mound to escape the jam. In the fifth, Easthampton's Chris Weathersby reached on a bunt hit, Shane Mitchell walked, and Vishaway drove in Weathersby with a hit. Mitchell scored the tying run from third on a fielders' choice as the Indians were unable to complete a double play, with Menard picking up an RBI. Easthampton's Ken Vautrin singled to open the sixth, moved up on a wild pitch, and took third on a disputed fair/foul call on Justin Ramodette's bunt down the first base line. Lewis hit a sacrifice fly to score Vautrin with the go ahead run. In the top of the seventh, Mike Lekarczyk was hit by a pitch, moved up on a ground out and stolen base, but was doubled off third on Donermeyer's scorching line drive to Kyle Pardee at third to end the game. The Indians host the BullDawgs at East Longmeadow High School on Thursday as they look to even the series.
